Akeelah and the Bee

Akeelah and the Bee is centered around a young black girl named Akeelah Anderson. The movie focuses on Akeelah’s life and her talent for spelling. Akeelah wins the spelling bee at her school and goes to the Regional Spelling Bee. When she makes it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee she prepares and works hard for the competition (Atchison, Akeelah and the Bee). Apart from her spelling talent Akeelah is dealing with personal issues. She feels lost and is not motivated at her school. Akeelah also feels alone with her mom always working. Her siblings are busy and have their own issues to worry about. Spelling seems to help her cope with her issues and gives her confidence. Spelling is like therapy and a positive outlet for Akeelah.

One major theme found in this film is the role of a father figure. Akeelah lost her father when she was six. Her spelling coach Dr. Larabee becomes a father figure and a role model to her when he begins coaching Akeelah (Atchison, Akeelah and the Bee).  This is significant because it shows the important role adults play when shaping a child. This seems to be a recurring theme in texts that deal with race and diversity. The children need strong influences to keep them focused on their education and see the value of it. I think one reason this film stresses the importance of education is because it is a form of power. Typically, the more educated you are the better opportunities a person has.

This film shows that black children or other minorities who may come from a low-income neighborhood are just as smart as children from more privileged neighborhoods. Unfortunately, they may not always have the same opportunities or resources as the kids who live in nicer areas. I believe this movie wants to show that all children’s education is important and that each child deserves equal opportunity no matter what their race is. Akeelah proves that race and class background has nothing to do with how smart a person is. Although she has not had the same experience as the other children she is still able to make it to the National Spelling Bee.

The film also attempts to break stereotypes about black people and people who come from less privileged neighborhoods. Akeelah competes in a scrabble competition with Dylan who is one of the students competing in the National Spelling Bee and he barely beats the game. His father sees this and says to him, “If you can barely beat a little black girl at a silly board game. How do you expect to win the National Bee?” (Atchison, Akeelah and the Bee). The father assumes that just because Akeelah is black she should be easy to beat. This film allows people to see why a person should not judge a person’s ability based off their race. Akeelah breaks negative stereotypes of black people when she wins the National Spelling Bee with Dylan. She proved that she is smart and capable of winning no matter what her race or circumstances are. This film can motivate a child and help them understand the importance of education. Akeelah and the Bee teaches children to rise above their challenges and to not give up. Lastly the film teaches people to be open minded when encountering people of a different race or background. I recommend this film to be seen by all children.
