The Case of the Missing Spoons (Post 107) 9-23-15

                        Our move into 1175 Delaware Trail continues to be a work in progress. Natalie is well along in her efforts to reassemble her Barbie megalopolis in the upstairs flat that is now her own, while the rest of us are lagging behind slightly.  About two thirds of the boxes are emptied; a large number of plastic totes have also been triaged and transported directly into basement storage.  The garage still looks pretty full but about half of the cardboard inventory is dedicated to Abby’s stuff for which I have no authorization to open, look at or breath on, an order that suits my laziness, but will become problematic as we are probably within a six week range of some snowfall.

I have progressed through the boxes clearly marked for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom contents and am now wedeling through cartons with seven and eight line-item markings for a goulash of miscellanea, none of which will be immediately useful.  I intend to open them all in succession until I discover what has happened to the kitchen serving spoons.  The empty spot in my kitchen silverware holder is quite vexing.

It is not like this is the first time I have lost something; my academy ring went missing on one of our house moves about a decade or so ago and I have come to terms with that gaping hole in my life.  I actually probably have only worn the door knocker-sized piece of jewelry about twenty times since I purchased it in 1987 as it was a big bulky chunk of gold that was really only useful for thwacking Stephen and Abby on the head when they were younger and I knew less about the dangers of post-concussion syndrome.

I would have liked to have found all the spices and dry goods also neatly packed among the kitchen sundries, but I seriously suspect that Nick chucked all of that stuff even though there is no real expiration date on paprika and pumpkin spice.  When I began my drive towards the Nevada line with Stephen riding a sleepy shot-gun, I was pretty sure that I would never see my favored shaker bottles of rosemary and thyme ever again, so if I end up coming across some McCormick products or one of Pam’s missing cookie sheets as I rifle more boxes, it will be an unexpected pleasure.  I mostly just want to find the serving spoons, though.

For the time being the hunt for the spoons is paramount in my very simple existence.  On a happy note I did notice that for one incredible 48 hour period the wood block holder by the sink did possess all six steak knives. One went missing within two weeks of my having bought the set two years ago.  When I was doing the dishes last night, I did discover that the rack was down to five again with none in the sink or dishwasher.  It would be interesting to know exactly whether the long lost sheep had strayed again or whether a new brother or sister knife now had gone on vacation to one of the kid’s rooms or into a hidey hole populated by Lilliputians or Borrowers.  At least I know the knife made it to Ohio; about the serving spoons I am not so sure.

That is how life at home has been.  We don’t have the internet or television yet although my email in box is deluged with special offer solicitations from all sorts or media companies and home security services.  If Dish TV accepted double-coupons, they would potentially owe me a monthly stipend for at least a little while. My electronic deficit is a deep chasm. On Sunday, for instance, I must have dropped into one of those time slidey hole thingees and slid back a couple of decades. I actually listened to an unlikely Browns win on the radio Sunday, while I hedged on observing Sabbath rest by folding laundry.  I live in the world, but my current corner is bereft of the loud klaxon of cable news, reality television and whatever is popular on HBO this season.  I even usually commute to and from work in thankful silence, because Natalie demands a saccharine pop repertoire as accompaniment whenever we drive together.

Today, though, I turned on EWTN radio as my little Aveo scooted up the last ten miles of Route 14 into Streetsboro.  I actually expected to hear the voice of Al Kresta, but it was Barbara McWiggin’s show instead.  I usually flick the radio back off when I hear her voice, because she is always pleasantly happier than I usually find tolerable – not an indictment of her but more of an indicator that my soul is far from ready for eternal bliss.  I expect that the majority of angels and saints that I will encounter, if I make it to heaven, will not have somber or sardonic dispositions.  Anyway I decided to listen to Barbara’s show because the alternative was silence or the pop channels that Natalie has programmed into all my buttons but one.  I had already completed a Divine Mercy Chaplet on my Mike Wiley rosary beads and was thoroughly sick of mentally chomping through my workday like it was a cow’s cud.  Bubbly earnest people seemed to be the best of the choices.

She is a good woman despite her cheery disposition and her show was about the undercover tapes at Planned Parenthood, a subject that I have mostly ignored.  I made up my mind about that organization long ago and recheck the facts only occasionally to confirm that PP is a totally corrupt and highly sinister outfit that continues to bamboozle nearly half of voting-age Americans. “We do mostly mammograms,” is the transparent fabrication that they offer to a bovinely credulous crowd who have never heard of Abby Johnson or care to understand her story.  Their deceitful spin is routinely accepted because to question the veracity of our nation’s largest abortion provider is to open a horrifying Pandora’s Box of cynicism and evil that most certainly doesn’t provide carefully matched selections of modern music.

Ugly truth is a challenge for my generation.  Growing up, none of us liked looking at the black and white images of heaps of emaciated bodies from the Holocaust.  We still learned unrevisionist history then, but nobody liked facing that type of reality. We all saw the disturbing pictures in school; the ugliness was before our eyes. Today, facing the cruelty and sheer evil of a century of attempted secular eugenic extermination of whole portions of humankind is no longer common to our culture.  Whether the perpetrators of the grandiose atrocities were named Hitler, the Imperial Japanese forces, Stalin, Mao, Castro, Pot, Manson, Milosevic or Muyagishari, we generally avert our eyes and replace the image with a Kardashian exploit.  The twentieth century was a bloody time and it takes an act of will to watch Schindler’s List, The Killing Fields or Hotel Rawanda.  The abortion mills of today are the historical progeny of the slave markets of the 18 hundreds and the death camps of the last century.

Once I get the internet again, I have resolved to review the PP tapes.  Barbara convinced me that there is more to them than I originally expected.  The truth will probably turn my stomach, but it is an unpleasantness that I believe that I am obligated to investigate because I can’t abide bullies and am committed to confronting evil wherever I find it.  As a Catholic, I condemn no one, not Che, not Bin Laden nor even Judas. Jesus’ sacrifice for their salvation is infinitely more than sufficient to wipe away even their heinous sins if they only ask for His mercy.  Neither do I condemn the deluded men and women who lie about abortion and facilitate the continued victimization of young women and their babies, but that does not mean that I accept the evil that is being done.  I encourage all of you to watch the videos even if you are already Pro-Life.  Evil is not rejected and refuted based on rhetoric and hearsay.  Evidence is available.

Barum Czech Rally Zlín měla být letos padesátým ročníkem v pořadí, ale kvůli koronavirové epidemii musel být přeložen na příští rok. Je tak zajištěno, že jubilejní ročník bude mít důstojnou oslavu. A ani po padesáté u toho nebude chybět tradiční česká značka pneumatik Barum, která je partnerem rallye po celou dobu její existence.

Značka Barum, registrovaná v roce 1948, měla k automobilovým závodům vždy velmi blízko a jezdci používající pneumatiky této značky pravidelně sbírali cenná vítězství. V roce 1971 tehdejší výrobce pneumatik Barum, při příležitosti otevření výrobního závodu v Otrokovicích, zorganizoval soutěž s názvem Servisní dny a Rallye Barum. Účastnilo se jí více než osmdesát posádek a vítězem se stal Jan Halmazňa. Jednalo o amatérskou rallye, která však odstartovala dlouholetou tradici tohoto velkolepého závodu. Od roku 1973 se soutěže pravidelně účasnil i Barum tým, jehož poznávacím znakem byla typická žlutomodrá barva.

Od prvního ročníku na počátku sedmdesátých let se toho však mnoho změnilo. Již v roce 1972 se stala soutěž součástí republikového šampionátu a její význam rostl i v následujících letech. Závod rychle nabyl mezinárodního významu a od roku 1984 je nepřetržitě součástí kalendáře mistrovství Evropy. Na začátku druhé poloviny osmdesátých let závod dokonce vedl i přes slovenské území.

V éře vozů WRC, které se používají v mistrovství světa, přišel v roce 2002 další mezník – závod získal nejvyšší evropský koeficient 20, jenž zaručuje účast předních evropských jezdců.

Měnily se i charakter a délka soutěže. Zatímco v prvním ročníku stačilo jezdcům zdolat 45 kilometrů rychlostních zkoušek, na konci sedmdesátých let počet závodních kilometrů dostahoval takřka pěti set (nejdelší byla Barumka v roce 1979, kdy každý soutěžící odjel 494 měřených kilometrů), přičemž dnes se soutěž pohybuje na necelé polovině této délky. Souhrnná délka všech rychlostních zkoušek, které se v historii Barum rallye odjely, je přibližně 13 000 kilometrů. Rallye se těší velké oblibě i mezi fanoušky. Celková kumulovaná návštěvnost v posledních letech pravidelně přesahuje 250 tisíc diváků.

Rekordmani: Kopecký a Škoda

Nejúspěšnějším pilotem v historii Barum rallye je Jan Kopecký, jenž ve Zlíně triumfoval osmkrát a od roku 2015 zůstává neporažen. Vyhrávali zde však i jiní – k trojnásobným vítězům se řadí například Roman Kresta či Nor John Haugland. Mezi značkami dominuje domácí Škoda s dvaceti primáty.

Propojení velké rallyové soutěže s významným výrobcem pneumatik, jako je tomu v případě Barum Czech Rally Zlín, se přímo nabízí, jelikož jsou pneumatiky při závodech často alfou a omegou úspěchu. „Značka Barum nedávno oslavila 70 let existence, takže 50. ročník Barum Czech Rally Zlín bude dalším významným milníkem, který oslavíme. Letos to bohužel kvůli situaci spojené s pandemií koronaviru nebude, ale podporujeme rozhodnutí pořadatelů o odložení závodu a zajištění důstojné a bezpečné oslavy tohoto výročí. Jméno naší značky se stalo synonymem pro nejvýznamnější rallyový podnik v České republice a těší nás, že toto partnerství ani po půlstoletí existence neztrácí na síle. Těšíme se na další společné roky,“ uvádí Magda Nagy, ředitelka marketingu Continental Barum. Pneumatiky Barum se na rallye vrátily zpět do akce v roce 2019, kdy během doprovodných jízd prověřil bývalý vicemistr Evropy Sepp Wiegand kvalitu závodních plášťů limitované edice Barum.

MACERATA – Martedì 7 novembre alle 21 al Teatro Lauro Rossi per i Concerti di Appassionata è la volta dell’ensemble praghese Josef Suk Piano Quartet che è diventato punto di riferimento nel panorama cameristico internazionale dopo essersi aggiudicato nel 2013 concorsi di assoluto prestigio come il ‘Salieri-Zinetti’ di Verona e il ‘Premio Trio di Trieste’, col plauso di Bruno Canino che quell’anno presiedeva la giuria.

Radim Kresta (violino), Eva Krestová (viola), Václav Petr (violoncello) e Václav Mácha (pianoforte) compongono una formazione che si contraddistingue per la perfetta intesa fra le singole personalità musicali. Evolution (Post 93) 6-17-15

Some friends of my parents stopped by this week.  They are a fun couple.  He is a folksy, puttering, retired physics teachers who once took my father’s side in a debate with other faculty members about why the lighting fixtures in the dining room were swinging back and forth in time. “Hal’s conjecture is both right and wrong,” Mr. Dorson offered in mediation, “While he is right that this is an earthquake, Hal is wrong about the oscillating motion of the chandeliers. They are stationary; it is the building that is moving back and forth.”  

It is helpful to have a physics teacher around to interpret natural phenomena, but for his wife, a liberal librarian, being married to an ultraconservative who is going deaf can be a trial. I believe she has taken up gardening and visiting museums as a means to deal with the relentless onslaught of Fox News with the volume turned up to eleven. It heartens me to see two people with differing views living together in toleration rather than consternation.  It is easy to see though, who a blaring news or sportscast could upset peace within an American family.

The news doesn’t really interest me much anymore.  Today my mother asked me what I thought of the drama of some felons that had escaped from prison somewhere quite a while ago but hadn’t been caught yet.  Initially, I thought she was talking about the Texas jailbreak from about a decade ago. Come to find out she was talking about a new escape that I had only vaguely heard about accidentally.  I am currently in kind of a news gray-out status with the expectation of placing myself under an out and out cone of silence in the Christmas season once the presidential hi-jinks begin in earnest.  By February every broadcast on every channel will be wall to wall politicians, people who used to be politicians and people who once worked for politicians for the foreseeable future.

While temporal debates are consequential and do impact The Church, I seem to be developing and increasingly lower tolerance for posturing, weasel words, taking others out of context, flamboyant exaggerations and smarminess.  Then once the commercials are over, I can’t stand the news commentators either.  It does seem like whenever Joe Biden blows his nose, Fox News will air alternating Democrat and Republican operatives who will dramatically exaggerate the significance and importance of the color of Joe’s handkerchief.   MSNBC will cover the same story with two Democrat operatives who refer continuously with nauseating condescension to a particular hanky that they both remember Dick Cheney using at one point last decade.  I vaguely remember that there may actually be another cable news channel, or there once was one, but it has become so irrelevant now that it is only watched in airport waiting areas by travelers who have forgotten to pack earphones as protection.  So that pretty much leaves the often biased CSPAN broadcast as my only probable news source. Unfortunately CSPAN is pretty much a consensus pick for the most boring channel not dedicated to auctioning shiny baubles.  So I mostly ignore the political news.

With regard to social issues, my views are mostly insulted on MSNBC and so vociferously agreed with by Sean Hannity that even I begin to question axiomatic beliefs that I have held all my life.  Mostly, I listen to a couple of minutes of Al Kresta on my drive home and compare my own conservative views against whatever Pope Francis has to say.  I try to allow his words to change my heart in a way that my mind can make sense of after the fact. Sometimes his views challenge me, but I am confident that Francis truly believes what he says and that the Pope doesn’t add spin. In general, whenever a Vatican mouthpiece is pontificating for him though, I change the channel as fast as I can.

With respect to matters of the faith, I do buy into whatever Pope Francis has to say lock, stock and barrel, whatever that means. (I search Google for stuff like that all the time and send kind thoughts towards David Katreeb as I’m doing it.)  Anyway, I think, for instance, that the Pope quite reasonably explains the Church position on evolution in a rational way that is consistent with a man who holds a degree in chemistry.  I agree with Francis when he articulates that evolution as a theory is not inconsistent with Church teaching.  God most likely may have chosen to work His design using evolution as a tool to mold the earth until Jesus entered creation in the flesh of a man.  As Supreme Being, He could also have chosen the more unlikely path of creating a whole mess of fossils and bones as a kind of archeological window dressing so that people wouldn’t be forced to believe in Him.  I don’t expect that He would do that, but as a man, I am not a self-appointed umpire of all that He does.  I am also not a competent judge of the intricacies of how other men think creation happened.  My only strong belief is against the neo-Darwinist spin that the theory of evolution proves that God doesn’t exist.  I know God does exist so I try to take a pass on things like hedonism, euthanasia, eugenics and genocide for which atheism provides license.

Here is a metaphor to explain my feelings on how neo-Darwinists extend the evolutionary theory into atheistic excess.  Nicholas, Abby and Natalie were visiting Pam’s parents in Maryland this weekend.  During the visit, Nicholas discovered a record turntable and a nunchaku set in the basement.  He also ran across a Bud Light clock but that is entirely beside the point.  His conjecture that both relics were a cool find is perfectly acceptable.  If Nicholas extended his reasoning to assume that when placed before a karaoke microphone, his grandfather would belt out, Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas, Nick would be pretty far afield.  His grandfather is actually partial to Roy Orbison – the Okinawan fighting sticks belong to Nick’s Uncle Chris.

Anyway, my point isn’t that the neo-Darwinist (Darwin believed in God) atheists have been hitting themselves in the head with sticks too much, even though I don’t agree with their misguided negation of God.  It seems as if we can reasonably believe that dinosaurs became birds or whatever inference paleontologists can reasonably support with evidence.  It doesn’t bother me that no fossil evidence of a missing link between me and Zippy the Chimp.  I’m sure a very low percentage of living troglodytes were actually preserved in shale sandwiches, so I am unconcerned by missing monkey bones.

To me it seems reasonable to believe that proto-evangelical Jesus oversaw evolution; that seems to be what Francis either believes or allows. That interpretation is also consistent with what Jesus has lead me to believe through the Holy Spirit and my discussions with Pam.  It doesn’t bother me when Traditionalists take the Old Testament more literally. To me the Pentateuch doesn’t read as Adam’s, Abraham’s and Moses’ diary any more that the New Testament reads as a Jesus’ memoir.  The Bible provides us with enough information to feed our faith a healthy meal, while still allowing the atheists enough freedom to come to the conclusion that random chance bred herds of allosaurs, then extincted them, while leaving their bone caches so that we can script an increasingly ridiculous Jurassic movie franchise.

Science is wondrous.  Georges LeMaitre, a Belgian Catholic priest used science to formulate the Big Bang Theory which gives us a window or inkling into how God created all of this and all of us.  For those less interested in the beauty of God’s creation, there is also a funny television show by the same name.  God intended us to engage in science so that we can discover more and more about what He has wrought.  Certainly, we will not discover it all, any more than we will find all the dinosaur bones, but what we do find will lead us closer to Him … if we engage in science honestly.

Not everybody follows the scientific method that was originally formulated by the Catholic Church.  Agendas other than truth can warp scientific findings and theories like evolution into false doctrines. Eugenics, for instance, the bastard child of evolutionary thought, lead men to massacre their neighbors.   Whether the corpses were Armenian, Jewish, Cambodian or Tutsi was immaterial, the blood was on the hands of atheists who purported to be using junk science for rationale.  The last century was bulwarked and sandbagged with bodies killed by men liberated from the enslaving belief in a higher power.  In this century the Neo-Darwinists are bringing us contraception and chemically induced gender selective abortion on demand, an abomination that would have horrified Hitler himself because it is double-decimating his master race within the course of several short generations.

For faithful Catholics, let us forgo intramural arguments about monkey DNA.  Because our observations are made of potshard fragments of a complete vase of knowledge, we will never fully understand the entire tableau that God has wrought until we learn everything we desire to know in the fullness of time.  I look forward to answers about Fatima and Lourdes and the Tilma of Guadalupe as well as how exactly the Big Bang was boomed.  With regard to evolution I have one last thought that interests me:  could there indeed be evolution beyond Jesus incarnation?  Also is Jesus’ glorified body an evolution of a different order that we will follow into, leaving our monkey relatives to their banana smoothies? In the meantime, let’s stick together as Catholics and try to sway the thought of those who no longer recognize evil and cruelty for what it is.

Zlín – Jan Kopecký und Beifahrer Pavel Dresler (CZE/CZE) holten bei der Barum Czech Rally Zlín im ŠKODA FABIA R5 ihren sechsten Sieg in Folge bei einem Lauf zur Tschechischen Meisterschaft. Sie schlugen dabei nicht nur ihre gewohnten Gegner im nationalen Championat, sondern konnten auch die Spitzenfahrer der Europäischen Rallye-Meisterschaft (ERC) hinter sich lassen, zu der die Barum Czech Rally Zlín als sechster Lauf gewertet wurde.

Jan Kopecký und Beifahrer Pavel Dresler (CZE/CZE) begannen im ŠKODA FABIA R5 ihre Jagd auf Saisonsieg Nummer sechs mit der ersten Bestzeit am späten Freitagabend auf der Show-Prüfung in den Straßen von Zlín. „Ich bin mit mir nicht ganz zufrieden, es hätte noch besser laufen können“, gab sich Kopecký selbstkritisch, obwohl er 4,1 Sekunden schneller als sein härtester Rivale, Alexey Lukyanuk aus Russland, das Ziel der Prüfung erreicht hatte. Auch am Samstagmorgen war der Tschechische Champion gleich hellwach und markierte eine weitere Bestzeit. Von da an entwickelte sich auf der längsten Etappe der Rallye ein munterer Schlagabtausch mit Lukyanuk.

Nach der dritten Prüfung übernahm Lukyanuk mit 0,3 Sekunden Vorsprung sogar kurzzeitig die Führung. Doch schon auf der nächsten Wertungsprüfung schlug der Tschechische Meister zurück und eroberte die Spitze zurück. Während der ŠKODA FABIA R5 von Kopecký lief wie ein Uhrwerk, bekam sein russischer Widersacher ein Problem mit der Servolenkung seines Ford und verlor Zeit. Mit einer schnellen und fehlerfreien Fahrt konnten Jan Kopecký und Pavel Dresler bis ins Zwischenziel in Zlín einen Vorsprung von 16,6 Sekunden herausfahren. Doch Jan Kopecký warnte am Ende der ersten Etappe: „Ich kenne Alexey von unserem Duell im letzten Jahr, er gibt niemals auf. Ich muss voll konzentriert weiterfahren und jedwede Fehler vermeiden. Die Prüfungen am Sonntag sind recht hart und anspruchsvoll. Besonders auf den 22 Kilometern der Prüfung Košíky liegen viel Schotter und Steine auf der Fahrbahn. Hier kann man sich nur allzu leicht einen Reifenschaden einfangen.“

Am Finaltag fuhren Jan Kopecký und Pavel Dresler im ŠKODA FABIA R5 auf den verbleibenden sechs Wertungsprüfungen alle Bestzeiten und gewannen am Ende mit einem Vorsprung von 55,5 Sekunden auf Lukyanuk. „Die Barum Czech Rally Zlín ist nicht nur der härteste und anspruchsvollste Lauf zur Tschechischen Meisterschaft. Sie zählt auch zu den schwierigsten Rallyes in Europa. Ich bin stolz und glücklich, dass ich hier nun zum siebten Mal gewinnen konnte. Ich danke meinem Beifahrer Pavel und dem ganzen ŠKODA Team mit sämtlichen Ingenieuren und Mechanikern, die mir das schnellste und zuverlässigste Rallye-Auto zur Verfügung gestellt haben. Mein ŠKODA FABIA R5 war einfach perfekt“, strahlte Kopecký im Ziel.

„Jan und Pavel sind und bleiben ohne Zweifel der Maßstab in der Tschechischen Rallye-Meisterschaft“, sparte ŠKODA Motorsport Chef Michal Hrabánek nicht mit Lob. Seit der Rally Šumava Klatovy 2015 ist die Kombination Kopecký/Dresler (CZE/CZE) und ŠKODA FABIA R5 ungeschlagen. Bei allen 16 Rallyes im nationalen Championat, an denen sie teilgenommen haben, waren sie siegreich. Alleine in der laufenden Saison gewannen sie alle der bisherigen sechs Läufe der Tschechischen Rallye-Meisterschaft (MČR) und sicherten sich vorzeitig den Titel.

Na kvalitu olejů a provozních kapalin Eurol spoléhají také závodníci Rallye Dakar, používá je například tým Nasser Al-Attiyah, úřadující vítěz v kategorii osobních vozů, který mezi sebe přivítá v nadcházející Rallye Dakar 2020 bývalého pilota Formule 1, Fernanda Alonsa. Dalším lákadlem tohoto závodu je zbrusu nový a jediný typ rallye kamionu s hybridním pohonem – Renault Trucks C460 Hybrid Edition, který pro optimální mazání hybridního pohonu využije Eurol Geo-Max 10W-40 nebo Eurol BIO Grease SI-000/101-S.

Oleje Eurol využívá při závodech TCR také belgický tým Boutsen Ginion Racing.
