Report: Jake Gyllenhaal Destroyed $30 Million Film With Strange, Erratic Behavior — World of Reel

Thomas Bidegain, one of the more famous French screenwriters, and longtime collaborator of Jacques Audiard (he also wrote Tom McCarthy’s “Stillwater”), recently released his second film as a director in France, titled “Soudain Seuls.”

Although the film was shot in French, with French actors, it was originally supposed to be shot in 2021, in English, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Vanessa Kirby as the main couple. It was a hot project that even had the likes of Margot Robbie eyeing to star.

As chronicled in the latest issue of Technikart, this $30 million film collapsed, mainly due to a paranoid, capricious and power-hungry Gyllenhaal — who was not just the lead actor, but also producer on the film. This story is wild.

It turns out Gylenhaal was very keen on rewriting and rethinking the whole project a mere 8 weeks before production was scheduled to begin, and as the sets were being built. It led to some major power moves on his part.

The report states how the film broke down as the crew was working hard on it in Iceland. The way Gyllenhaal is portrayed is rather, shall we say, unpleasant, bordering on psychopathic behavior.

Gyllenhaal had some incomprehensible whims (he demanded to drive a car "neither red nor white") to paranoia (asking the set constructors to sleep in their cars because he feared they'd bring covid to the hotel he shared with the crew) to many episodes of yelling at his director (he supposedly did the first reading rehearsal in the accent of Pepe Le Pew).

The strangest anecdote has Gyllenhaal, while visiting set locations, deciding to strip to his underwear and diving into the freezing ocean because "When I see the sea, I swim in the sea.” This bewildered the crew, which included Bidegain.

The nightmare finally ended when Bidegain had to make a “heartbreaking” call to producer Alain Attal, conceding defeat, “Our visions diverge too much. We won’t be able to shoot in September. … It’s all over, and the €26 million is gone!”

It’s not like this story is coming from a dubious source either. It’s been talked about heavily in France the last week, having been covered in some of the biggest media outlets in the country. I’m actually surprised nobody in the U.S. has picked up on this yet.

I'll bet old Jake won't be making anymore cracks about Cabbage Patch Kids, anytime soon.

Alain Madelin : le retour de la croissance ? 

Alain Madelin avait disparu des écrans et des micros. Il revient détendu et en pleine forme pour dénoncer les attitudes politiciennes stériles et considérer qu’il est encore possible de prendre des mesures d’intérêt général en faveur de la croissance. 

Il a compris depuis longtemps que seule une politique libérale pouvait favoriser la croissance mais aussi que ce n’est qu’avec une forte croissance qu’il y a du grain à moudre et donc que les français pourraient accepter le libéralisme économique.

Ce libéralisme économique est très lié en France aux 30 glorieuses. Plus de 40 ans après, quel avenir pour une politique libérale  alors que la croissance est faible en dépit des déclarations de Gabriel Attal même si elle est légèrement supérieure à celle d’autres pays européens ?

Alain Madelin est sans illusion. La plupart des hommes politiques actuels, qu’ils pensent à la présidentielle ou à leur réélection, privilégient leur intérêt personnel ou celui de leur parti par rapport à l’intérêt général.

Best French Films - Cinéma Saturday - it's Sink Or Swim!

Following the intermission and last week's VE Day post, which you can find here, I was going to recommend some WWII films, but you'll find plenty of suggestions within the Reading Room of resources in that post (after the epic visual bibliography of books!)

This week, it's back to normal. Last time, Cinéma Saturday explored the thoughtful film 'The Truth' starring Juliette Binoche and Catherine Deneuve.

Today we're in France, exploring depression, self-worth, masculinity and having a really good laugh! Yes, Gilles Lellouche's directorial solo debut is Le Grand Bain, a comedy starring many faces you'll know and perhaps some you don't. Read on to find out more…

Synopsis

A group of 40-something guys, all on the verge of a mid-life crisis, decide to form their local pool’s first ever synchronized swimming team – for men. Braving the skepticism and ridicule of those around them and trained by a fallen champion trying to pull herself together, the group set out on an unlikely adventure, and on the way will rediscover a little self-esteem and a lot about themselves and each other.

What I liked about this film

Men in swimming trunks and trying to learn synchronised swimming might not be your first choice of comedy subject, but Lellouche considered this idea for many years and it shows in this enjoyable film. Full of 1980s pop classics, when most of the characters were "young", this film may not have many surprises, but is certainly makes up for any shortcomings in its toe-tapping, root-for-the-team perfection.

Amalric is the depressed father and husband, unable to work and spending his days on the sofa playing games on his phone who comes across an advert for joining a men's synchronised swimming team. This interesting catalyst changes his perspective and connection with others and his character anchors the film. Essentially all the main characters get rounded out with their stories without the film feeling disjointed. Deflty done, the immense team feeling that all these very different people have is what makes this film shine. Realising that a lot of people get together to play a sport, perhaps with absolutely nothing else in common at all, and yet they keep coming back, Lellouche takes this idea and runs with it. As Lellouche explains, 'They aren’t friends, but they share this very specific time in their lives when something is happening that’s bigger than the idea of sports, something like a team spirit and the absence of cynicism.'

From the graceful, slightly surreal man-child character played so brilliantly by Philippe Katerine to the comic nuances of Poelvoorde's doomed pool businessman, there is a rich tapestry of stories, characters and funny, touching or dramatic moments. This exploration behind the swimmers' team facades is that makes the film so engaging – we want to know what happens to the team, but we also care what happens in the lives of the characters too. There is a completely uncynical, almost tender viewpoint and so we look at these moments of ordinary people trying to do something extraordinary with interest. From faded rockstars working in cafeterias to alcoholic relationship problems and everything in-between, the film has some comedy mixed with the moments of the issues the characters face.

The women in this film are really crucial as their actions change the lives of all of the men, so it's excellent that Lellouche chose so well in his casting. Marina Foïs is faultless as the supportive wife wavering in her capacity to put up with the apparently well-meaning comments of her family and who doesn't judge her husband's decision to try synchronised swimming. Her supermarket speech is memorable and perfectly judged. Efira and Bekhti provide an interesting double-arc together. Canet's angry rule-needy character is a change of key amongst the group and ensures we don't feel that everyone gets along easily. Everyone plays it very well and the film takes some very funny storytelling turns for the team and the lives of the coaches and swimmers.

Through it all, we have high hopes for the team..or perhaps no hope whatsoever as we see them train! Nevertheless, the film has some hilarious moments and especially towards the end in the synchronised swimming competition. That alone is worth your time for this film – it's just the sort of feel good, have a laugh and maybe a dance kind of denouement… it might be just the tonic for today's times!

France’s Left-Wing Coalition Reveals Plan To Introduce 90 Percent Tax On Annual Income Over €400,000

After securing the majority of seats in Sunday’s election, the newly formed left-wing government in France has revealed plans to impose a ninety percent tax on its “wealthier” citizens.

The left-wing coalition known as the New Popular Front (NPF) shocked French politics this past weekend when it defeated both Emmanuel Macron’s Ensemble party and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally.

Though the NPF secured the most seats (182), it was unable to secure a majority and will now soon face Macron.

The leaders of the NPF convened on Monday to decide who would be the nominee for head of their proposed new administration.

“We are preparing to govern, to apply the programmed which is ours,” said Manuel Bompard, coordinator of the France Unbowed party.

According to this plan, the retirement age will be lowered from 64-years-old to 60-years-old, and an annual income tax rate of 90% will apply to those earning over €400,000. €400,000 equates to approximately $432,736 U.S. dollars, according to Google’s money converter tool.

In addition, the NPF has pledged to spend a minimum of €150 billion over the next three years and has called for a minimum raise of 14%.

After the unexpected results on Sunday, Macron’s prime minister, Gabriel Attal, resigned, but the French president asked him to continue in an acting capacity right away.

However, according to Bompard, Attal, 35, would be going against the wishes of the French people if he stayed in his position.

“There is no question of Gabriel Attal’s continuation [as prime minister] wiping out the vote of French people,” he said, calling on Macron to “respect” the end result.

Meanwhile, Macron’s Ensemble supporters denied that the NPF won on Sunday.

“No one won,” stated Gérald Darmanin, the interior minister.

Le Pen, the leader of the National Rally, has maintained that her party’s victory was “only delayed” despite finishing third in Sunday’s election. Macron’s stance was likewise deemed “untenable” by her.

“We’ve been thrown into the arms of the extreme left and of Jean-Luc Melenchon,” said Jordan Bardella, the president of the National Rally.

Gabriel Attal's made the call. "I've decided that one may no longer wear the abaya at school", the education minister announced on TF1 on Sunday, saying it was a "fair and necessary rule".

"When you go into a classroom, you mustn't be able to tell the students' religions by looking at them," he put forward. Gabriel Attal had already made a non-negotiable order to the education officers he brought together on the 24st of August: "At a time when our Republic is tested, we have to make a stand", he insisted.

For almost a year, school heads and principals confronted with students in abayas (long traditional Middle Eastern dresses, worn over other clothes) or in gamis (long tunics for men) have been asking for "clear orders" as to whether these clothes ostensibly represent a religious affiliation, breaking the law of 15 March 2004. In a private memo, the consulting body regarding laicity and Republican values advocated for the non-tolerance policy, "worrying that people are once again not left to be in control of themselves", as Alain Seksig, the General secretary of the authority explained.

Rock’n’Roll

Ca parle de quoi ?  Guillaume Canet a 43 ans et réalise qu’il n’est plus très “rock”. En avant pour la crise de la quarantaine carabinée.  C’est avec qui ?  Guillaume Canet as “himself” Marion Cotillard as “herself” Gilles Lelouche as “himself” Mais aussi du gros beau monde Johnny Halliday as “himself” Yvan et Alain Attal as “themselves” Yodelice et Yarol Poupaud as “themselves” Oui, Guillaume a plein de copains C’est de qui ? Guillaume Canet, au four et au moulin Et c’était bien ? Guillaume Canet s’est embarqué avec beaucoup d’audace dans un film très risqué. S’il avoue régulièrement qu’il déteste être exposé médiatiquement, le côté paradoxal qui anime chaque être humain l’a visiblement poussé à écrire, réaliser et à jouer dans une comédie à propos de lui qui veut clairement dire “regardez, je suis comme tout le monde”.  Dès le début du film, Canet va vulgairement vous exposer ce qu’iil veut démontrer : lui aussi a mal aux couilles, parfois.  Ne renions pas notre plaisir, la première demi-heure de film est assez jouissive, et franchement drôle. Canet se tourne avec plaisir en dérision, n’épargne rien à sa femme et n’hésite pas à se servir de l’image de ses amis connus pour enfoncer le clou.  Le film est clairement divisé en deux actes: le déclic “je suis vieux” suivi de la solution trouvée pour aller mieux.  Après “Les Petits Mouchoirs” qui était parfois drôle mais surtout cliché et larmoyant, on ne peut être que surpris par une certaine originalité de scénario qui prouve bien une véritable autodérision et une envie d’aller loin dans la démonstration. Canet ne s’interdit rien et, visiblement, les producteur l’on laissé faire, donnant naissance à un film qui, enfin, étonne, et débroussaille un peu les vieilles recettes de la comédie à la française. Si la dernière demi-heure de film a défrisé nombres de critiques qui l’ont souvent jugé “grotesque”, j’ai quant à moi apprécié le développement et ri de bon coeur devant le grotesque, justement.  Le film est pourtant un peu trop long. Canet semble avoir du mal à faire le tri dans ses idées. Le “Petits Mouchoirs” mais aussi “Mon Idole” pour ne citer qu’eux, auraient déjà pu s’économiser une demi heure de pathos gratuit. Là aussi, il y a flottement entre les deux actes, Guillaume tourne 20 bonnes minutes en rond sans faire évoluer son histoire. Son personnage se perd un peu longtemps avant de trouver “la solution”.  Niveau réalisation et technique pure, Canet s’est clairement laissé aller à quelques expérimentations parfois “kitsch” qui sont plus proches du délire qu’autre chose mais on peut saluer une caméra assez dynamique et une belle direction d’”acteurs” (ou plutôt direction de “copains, mais que voulez-vous, ça marche).  Au delà de la caricature et de l’auto-dérision, on peut voir dans “Rock’N’Roll’ un film sur le fait de vieillir et de ne pas se sentir toujours à la hauteur de son image, de celle qu’on a et de celle qu’on voudrait donner. Souvent bien plus discret que sa femme, Canet-réalisateur a connu les succès au box office mais aussi les gros revers de médaille (énorme flop pour son remake américain des Liens du Sang, rallongé d’une demi heure par rapport au film original, qui était d’ailleurs assez raté). Il est probable qu’il se soit lui-même vraiment perdu à 40 ans, Rock’N’Roll est certainement sa catharsis.  C’est bien joué ? Chaque personnage joue bien sûr un rôle qui se veut proche de sa personne ou, du moins, de l’image que s’en forge le grand public. Guillaume Canet nous offre toute une galerie d’expressions perplexes et circonspectes qui sont assez drôles. C’est Marion Cotillard qui étonne vraiment dans ce film. Fraîche, drôle et sympathique, elle n’hésite pas non plus à se moquer d’elle même dans les grandes largeurs (il ne manquait q’une redite de la scène de Batman). Elle prouve ici de son potentiel comique que nous n’avions pas vu depuis longtemps. Rock’n’Roll pourrait bien altérer la vision que les Français ont de Madame-Cotillard-l’Oscarisée. 

Et ça, c’est rock ?  On y va ? Honnêtement, il y a longtemps qu’une comédie française n’avait pas été aussi originale. Alors Perle ou Navet ? Il est rare voir une personnalité du cinéma se moquer d’elle même à ce niveau. Monsieur Cotillard veut marteler qu’il est quelqu’un de normal, en proie aux mêmes doutes et tourments que le quidam moyen. Avec sa femme et ses copains, il réalise un film au scénario assez étonnant qui tranche vivement avec les banales comédies à la française. Acerbe avec lui même mais aussi avec le monde du cinéma et du showbizz, Canet surprend, fait rire et gagne son pari très très risqué.  Pourquoi faut-il maintenant qu’il lance la prod’ des Petits Mouchoirs 2 ?

EXCLUSIVE: In some powerhouse two-hander casting, we can reveal that Oscar nominees Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) and Vanessa Kirby (Pieces Of A Woman) have been set to lead survival thriller Suddenly, which quickly becomes one of the must-have packages at the Cannes virtual market. The movie will be the sophomore directorial outing for acclaimed screenwriter Thomas Bidegain, known for scripting films such as A Prophet, Rust And Bone and Dheepan, which won the Palme d’Or. Bidegain is also scripting the English-language project.

The feature is based on Isabelle Autissier’s French-language novel Soudain Seuls, which follows a couple who become stranded on an island in the South Atlantic and must fight for survival when their dream journey becomes a nightmare. The novel shines a light on the dynamics of their relationship and also holds a mirror up to modern society.

Studiocanal is launching world sales this week and is teaming up with Tresor Films and Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories on the blue chip prospect.

Producers are Alain Attal (Tell No One), and Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker for their Nine Stories (The Guilty) banner. Studiocanal is financing. Artemis Productions (Belgium) and True North Productions (Iceland) will co-produce.

Gyllenhaal and Bidegain previously worked together on The Sisters Brothers. The actor was last seen on the big screen in Spider-Man: Far From Home and upcoming has thrillers The Guilty, directed by Antoine Fuqua, and Ambulance, directed by Michael Bay.

The in-demand Kirby is in the middle of a hot streak that has included The Crown (for which she won a BAFTA), three Mission Impossible movies, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and well-received Venice Film Festival duo Pieces Of A Woman (for which she won the festival’s best actress prize) and The World To Come.

Writer-director Thomas Bidegain commented: “With Suddenly, I wanted to analyse the deep dynamics of a relationship stripped of all the artifices of the modern world, when facing life and death situations in a wondrous  but hostile environment. Jake and Vanessa are a dream pairing who elevate the film to an entirely new dimension and are dream partners for making the film, along with our friends at Studiocanal.”

Un discours de politique trop général 

C’est un peu la loi du genre des déclarations de politique générale des Premiers ministres : des généralités, des intentions plus ou moins louables, une certaine façon d’enfoncer les portes ouvertes, un zest de méthode Coué.

Si ce n’est que ce mardi 30 janvier, on était en pleine crise agricole avec le blocage de Paris et d’autres lieux en province. On attendait donc des réponses et au-delà des paysans en souffrance et de la mise à mort de l’agriculture française, ce sont tous les oubliés de la mondialisation qui espéraient autre chose que de la communication.

Seule déclaration positive dans le domaine agricole en faveur de l’exception agricole française en référence à l’exception culturelle française. Que peut-on en attendre ?

Logiquement le report de la signature du Mercosur et le fait qu’il y aura désormais une exception pour les produits agricoles dans les accords de libre-échange. Mais l’Union européenne et l’organisation mondiale du commerce ont une autre logique qui accorde peu d’importance aux agricultures nationales, dont l’agriculture française.

Je reviendrai sur la crise agricole dans plusieurs jours voire dans plusieurs semaines quand on y verra plus clair sur les décisions prises tant au niveau national qu’au niveau européen et international.

Il n’est pas certain que le catalogue des mesures envisagées dans ce discours réponde aux préoccupations des oubliés de la mondialisation. Gabriel Attal doit faire croire dans le sillage du président de la République à la mondialisation heureuse revendiquée par Alain Juppé. Il doit donc se battre contre le doute.

Avec une arme fatale qui lui appartient : le rappel de son homosexualité qui a suscité chez les députés macroniens une « standing ovation ».

Sortie du film  Lui : Date de sortie? La suite d’After, a été confirmé un mois après la sortie du premier film au cinéma. Le 19 mai 2019, After 2 avait été confirmé.  Quand pourrons-nous le voir en salle ? Malheureusement, nous n’avons encore aucune date de sortie officielle, mais peut-être fin 2021, début 2022.

Lui, le film sera là ! Le film After est sorti le mercredi 2 septembre 2021. Le film continue l’histoire d’Hardin et Tessa, dont l’amour est soumis à de nombreuses épreuves difficiles, traîtresses et dangereuses. Ces deux amoureux auront-ils une fin heureuse ? En attendant de savoir si le film a été acclamé par les fans, il y a de bonnes nouvelles :  Lui va sortir ! Cela a été confirmé le 3 septembre 2021 par les deux stars de la série dans une vidéo postée sur le profil Instagram officiel d’After. Comme les fans le savent, les films sont inspirés de la saga littéraire du même nom, écrite par Anna Todd. La série After est composé de 4 livres.

L’intrigue du film  Lui L’amour d’Hardin et Tessa est encore une fois mis à l’épreuve. Ces  deux adolescents vont devoir affronter leur passé. Tessa rencontre son père après des années et décide de le prendre en charge après avoir découvert qu’il était devenu sans abri. Hardin accepte de l’héberger mais ne fait pas confiance à cet homme, convaincu qu’il cache une partie de la vérité. Mais ce n’est pas le seul obstacle. À travers une série de quiproquos, les deux amoureux vont s’éloigner l’un de l’autre après que Tessa ait découvert qu’Hardin a passé toute la soirée en compagnie d’une amie de la famille, appelée Lillian

Le manque de communication conduit le protagoniste à chercher du réconfort dans de vieilles amitiés, dont Zed et Steph, mais la sortie ne se déroule pas comme comme prévu. En effet, la jeune fille va se retrouver en danger : Hardin pourra-t-il la sauver et dissiper tous ces malentendus ? Concernant l’intrigue du film, Castille Landon, le réalisateur d’ Lui nous assure qu’il sera fidèle au roman du même nom.

Le casting du film  Lui : qui sera là ? Nous verrons probablement le retour de deux personnages principaux : Héro Fiennes-Tiffin et Josephine Langford, comme Hardin et Tessa,  Luiivement. Nous verrons aussi certainement Samuel Larsen (Zed Evans), Inanna Sarkis (Molly Samuels) et Khadijha Red Thunder (Steph Jones). Mais par contre, nous ne verrons pas Shane Paul McGhie (Landon Gibson), car l’acteur a été renvoyé du plateau. Dylan Sprouse, dont le rôle est Trevor ne revient pas non plus.

Mais il y a aussi une nouvelle de dernière minute : d’autres acteurs ne reviendront pas dans le troisième film, d’où la nécessité d’un renouvellement. Déjà dans After 2, on se rend compte que le père d’Hardin n’est plus joué par Peter Gallagher (Andy Cohen pourquoi es-tu parti ?) mais par Rob Estes et que la mère de Landon n’est plus jouée par Jennifer Beals mais par Karimah Westbrook. Nous verrons également beaucoup de changements dans  Lui. En commençant par Candice King et Charlie Weber : les deux acteurs ne seront plus Kim et Christian Vance.

L’actrice que nous avons appris à aimer dans The Vampire Diaries comme Caroline est enceinte de son deuxième enfant ! Sa grossesse l’empêche donc de retourner sur le plateau pour filmer  Lui. Candice sera remplacée par Arielle Kebbel que nous avons déjà vu dans The Vampire Diaries: : Il s’agit de Lexi, le meilleur ami de Stefan ! Charlie sera remplacé par Stephen Moyer. Aussi Selma Blair, qui joue la mère de Tessa, est remplacée par Mira Sorvino. En plus de toutes ces modifications, il y a aussi une nouvelle arrivée : Carter Jenkins, qui jouera Robert, le potentiel amoureux de Tessa.

La raison de tous ces changements est que le fait de tourner deux films ensemble empêche aussi certains des acteurs principaux de participer à d’autres engagements professionnels ou autres.
