이 영화에서는 개인적으로 참 반가운 배우가 출연한다. 주인공 Glen Hansard가 바로 그다. 비록 그의 이름은 알지 못했지만 개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 영화 중 하나인 The Commitments에서 키타 주자 Outspan 역을 맡았던 배우기 때문이다. The Commitments 가 1991년 작이고 이 영화가 2006년 작이므로 15년 만에 다시 영화에 출연한 셈이다. 세월은 거스를 수 없는 법. 천진난만하던 외모가(당시 얼굴 보기) 이제 많이 연륜이 묻어나온다(지금 얼굴 보기). 영화의 줄거리는 단순하다. 실연에 아픔을 간직한, 그리고 음악을 사랑하는 한 아일랜드 남자가 우연히 피아노를 즐겨 치는 체코 여자를 알게 되고 서로의 교감을 나누며 데모 음반을 한 장 완성한 후 각자의 삶을 찾아 떠난다는 내용이다. 음악 하는 이들을 모아서 음반을 완성하는 과정이 얼핏 앞서 언급한 The Commitments를 연상시킨다. 하지만 The Commitments가 밴드의 구성에서 빚어지는 웃음과 갈등을 여러 캐릭터의 시선을 통해 다면적으로 엮어가는 반면 이 작품은 거의 주인공의 개인적 실연의 경험과 역량에 의존하는 편이다. 스타일 면에서 The Commitments 가 우스운 비극이라면 Once는 서글픈 희극이라 할 수 있다. Alaistair Foley는 이 작품에서 The Commitments에서 거의 드러나지 않았던 키타 실력과 노래 실력을 맘껏 선보인다. 오히려 너무 음악이 ‘맘껏’ 연주되는 것이 아닌가 하는 느낌이 들 정도다. 그래도 오랜만에 보는 깔끔하고 매력있는 음악 영화다.
