fordola: at first, alia hated her, but she began to understand and sympathize how fordola could’ve gotten to a place where she felt she had no choice but to become who she did to survive the garleans - she wouldn’t have made the same choices, but she gets it to some degree, especially with the echo visions and arenvald’s hope in her. she genuinely wants to help fordola come back from all she’s done and make a better life for herself.

ryne: the amount of times her heart breaks for this poor girl throughout her time on the first. augh. she reminds her a lot of rielle, an earnest, kindhearted girl with no control over the circumstances of her birth being hunted down and trying to withstand the pressure and misguided guilt projected onto her by her guardian figure, which made her miss home worse but also more proactive about pushing thancred to open up for ryne’s sake. alia also thinks of ryne like a sort of niece (maybe not in outright terms, but as thancred’s daughter and alia’s sort of pseudo siblings-slash-in law dynamic with thancred) and she’s so proud of how much she’s grown in her own agency and as oracle of light. she’s also rooting for ryne and gaia always.

vrtra: alia was wary of him at first, like she is most of the first brood, and particularly with the subterfuge around the identity of the satrap, but he’s become a good friend to her. she’s curious and amused by his use of simulacra with both little and big varshahn (and probably needles his alchemists about it with that whole intersection of her own aetheric simulacra summonings). she admires his love for the people of thavnair and how he views them as his children, and in part of her own connection to midgardsormr, she feels protective of middy’s child even if his age far outspans her because of how middy has looked out for her, too.

tataru: while they aren’t super close as far as opening up about deep personal stuff (at least on alia’s end), they’re great friends! she’s someone who alia can feel at ease around whether they’re baking together or gossiping over tea, or entrust her with finances that she’s otherwise lost on. they look out for each other in their own ways as well - alia is protective of tataru but admires her strengths, and she’s endlessly grateful for the island that tataru arranged for her to have at a time that she really needed to heal by tending things with her hand rather than wielding a weapon.

There was a kid at our school who was nicknamed Outspan.  The reason?  On one day he used too much hair-gel, happened to have a particularly round head, was small and another kid decided he looked like an orange.  He then endured hearing renditions of this very popular commercial everywhere he went.

I reminisce about my time in school a lot.  Despite a relatively short (but profound) period of bullying I enjoyed my school years so I guess it is normal to think back fondly.  And with most people operating under some kind of online alias these days it got me thinking of some of the more creative nicknames given in school - sometimes without the person even knowing.  I’d love to hear yours or your favourite from this non-exhaustive list.
