#Albufera National Park
Text
hello once again, your friendly neighborhood spaniard is here once again to comment on the references to spanish culture i'm seeing while playing scarlet and violet!
here's my previous post on this! and i wanted to tell you that as per this post, i've officially seen all the cities and towns in paldea which means there's not really much else to explore, these posts are coming to an end :(
anyways, let's start
if montenevera is based on the pyreenees, it makes sense that the area around the fairy squad camp is modeled around another part of northern spain, in this case asturias and more precisely the picos de europa national park, arguably the prettiest part of the country (i've never been there but everyone that has been says asturias is the prettiest so who am i to disagree). just like in the game, it's a beautiful prairie place next to big scary mountains and right by the sea! however, there are no marshy areas in asturias; the three largest ones in the country are the ebro delta [pic 6], the valència albufera [pic 7], and doñana national park [pic 8]. i would say the in-game one is probably referencing the ebro delta, only based on location, as the other two are more south.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
another fun thing about this area is that if you go swimming in the north coast you'll be able to find the tynamo evolution family, based on lampreys! lampreys have been fished in galicia as early as the roman times, with unique rock constructions built in the rivers called pesqueiras used to specifically catch them. they are part of the traditional galician (and portuguese!) cuisine, and they are similar to anchovies, one of the most popular dishes in another northern iberian area, cantabria.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
finally, there's the last town of the game that i had yet to see, alfornada! one fun fact about me is that my favourite architectural style is mudéjar, so i was absolutely stoked to see a whole town built in that style!!! for everyone who doesn't know what mudéjar is, or why arabic-inspired music sounds all throughout the town, i'm gonna summarize 700 years of story really quick: after the western roman empire fell, the visigoths took over the peninsula, and things were chill for a bit until 711, when the moors invaded the peninsula. by 722 all but asturias was now part of the umayyad caliphate (we call moorish iberia al-andalus for short), but the asturians defeated the moors in the battle of covadonga and from there on the reconquista started, a centuries old war between christians and muslims in iberia that lasted until 1492, when the last remnants of al-andalus were defeated. as you could imagine this conjured up a very complex social landscape and a unique cultural makeup that still lasts till this day. within all of that, there were three groups we had to study in class and were a pain in the ass to differenciate (i had to search what each one were for this post): muladíes (local iberians that converted to islam and lived in al-ándalus), mozárabes (christians and jews that lived in al-ándalus), and mudéjares (muslims living in the iberian christian kingdoms). mozárabes and mudéjares had to pay extra taxes and live in special quarters of the cities, but apart from that they all lived peacefully which is neat. both groups had their own art styles, but the mudéjar art and architecture was the most prominent of the two, and even experienced a renaissance in the 19th and 20th centuries with the neo-mudéjar style. it basically mixes muslim and christian styles and it's so good i love it with all my heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also, alfornada is known for its pottery, and ceramics are one of the traditional spanish arts, there are still a lot of ceramic workshops in rural areas where you can find handmade ceramic. and the plates displayed in alfornada are also very popular in the country, every grandma has at least one set very similar to the ones in the game lol. one particular place associated with this type of ceramic is talavera de la reina, in toledo. as our ex-president once said 'the talavera pottery is a big thing, in other words, it is not' a small thing' (it doesn't make sense in spanish either <3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you thought i was done with this town huh? surely there isn't any more references right??? right??? well, we're just getting started. another interesting feature of alfornada is all the fountains in the streets, which, alongside with the music and the mudéjar style, made me realise what was the biggest inspiration behind this town: the alhambra, the palace complex of the kings of the nasrid kingdom of granada, the last stronghold of al-andalus and imo the most incredible human construction ever (it's a unesco world heritage site as well). even the setting of alfornada corroborates this; the alhambra sits on the top of a mountain, right by the sierra nevada mountain range, one of the tallest of the country (in fact, the highest peak in iberia, the mulhacén, is located there). one of the main defining features of the alhambra was the usage of water, with tons of canalization through the complex and lots of gorgeous fountains.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we're almost done, hold up (this is the first post where i had to cut some images cause i had reached the 30 pic limit oops). just north to alfornada, if you continue to climb up the mountain, you'll reach a ruins area. there are tons of these in paldea, and it makes sense, there's a ton of ruins everywhere in spain as well, but these are special due to its location, its context, and the arch and colums that can clearly be seen. i'm pretty sure this is a direct reference to medina azahara, the palace complex of the caliphate of córdoba, that now lies in ruins (another world heritage site). i visibly gasped when i got here, it shows how much thought the pokemon company put into this game :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that was all! i hope you liked it :)
here's next post !!!

MUT Design clads modular Valencia Pavilion in thousands of wooden scales
Valencia studio MUT Design has designed five modular pavilions clad in scales made from leftover wood for a travelling exhibition in Spain.
The pavilions will showcase work by 50 designers in five different sections to celebrate Valencia's title of World Design Capital for 2022.
Each section – design and art, the circular economy, industry and craftsmanship, technology and the transformative economy – is housed within its own mini pavilion formed from two semi-cylinders.
Top image: the exhibition is broken down into five mini-pavilions. Above: each is formed from two semi-cylinders
These consist of four metre-high curved walls, which can be placed separately or together to create a labyrinth of winding corridors and secluded alcoves.
Inside, the units' pinewood frame and construction are laid bare, while the convex exterior is clad in hundreds of small, overlapping wooden fins, adding up to around 220,000 across all five pavilions.
The units are arranged to form a labyrinth of corridors and alcoves
The wood was originally meant to be turned into the parade floats that are ceremonially burned as part of Valencia's historic Fallas festival every March, but the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Instead, the wood was used for this installation, which is on view as part of the Madrid Design Festival until 14 March before becoming a travelling exhibition.
The pinewood frame is left exposed inside the pavilions
"Here in Valencia, we have a lot of traditional wood ateliers that create works for the Fallas festival," MUT Design co-founder Alberto Sánchez told Dezeen.
"But it was cancelled due to the pandemic and a lot of materials were left on the shelf. So we decided to collaborate with one of the ateliers to give a new life to the wood and create some work for the builders."
The pavilions are clad in wooden scales
Each scale was handmade by local woodworker Manolo García and trimmed to three standard sizes of 14, 16 and 18 centimetres. These were then lined up and alternated to create a textured surface not dissimilar to tree bark.
"We wanted to bring together tradition and the avant-garde while recovering something that is really ours – deeply rooted in our city," Sánchez explained.
In particular, the studio drew on natural textures found in the Albufera National Park just south of Valencia, as well as on the thatched roofs of traditional houses known as barracas.
Breaking each pavilion down into two semi-cylinders allows the individual units to be combined into "infinite compositions" that can be adapted to different spaces for the travelling exhibition.
"Because it is a travelling exhibition, we want to create one-of-a-kind experiences in each of the several places it will be visiting," Sánchez added.
The units were also designed to be taken apart into separate pieces, which can be stacked for ease of transport.
Each scale was handmade by Manolo García
Contributors to the exhibition include designer Jaime Hayon, brands Andreu World and Expormim, and a number of emerging studios showing projects including self-ventilating graphene facades and homeware made from olive pits.
"We wanted to bring to Madrid a different selection of projects that are leading a silent transformation of society," explained Xavi Calvo, director of World Design Capital Valencia 2022.
Displays are fixed to the inside of the pavilions
MUT Design has previously collaborated with Expormim to create a chair modelled on the shape of a flower petal and an outdoor rug made from braided ropes, which were exhibited at the products fair of Dezeen's Virtual Design Festival.
Valencia Pavilion – The Future is Design is on view at the Fernán Gómez Cultural Centre as part of the Madrid Design Festival until 14 March 2021. See Dezeen Events Guide for an up-to-date list of architecture and design events taking place around the world.

Valencia is famous as the birthplace of paella.  This is no surprise since just outside of the city is the largest rice growing area in Spain.  La Albufera National Park includes the largest lake in Spain.  The fresh water lake is separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow, pine covered strip of land.  The lake is very shallow and from it, the Valencians have carved rice paddies.   The paddies are divided by an intricate system of dykes and canals which allow the farmers to drain the paddies in the spring for planting, flood them from the lake during the growing season and then drain them again in October for the harvest.
La Albufera is now also a tourist destination.  The tiny little towns in the region are full of paella restaurants.  Barca, or small boats, modeled after those used by the local eel-fishermen, take tourists for a scenic ride through the rice fields and into the lake where Valencia is visible 30km away.
We rode the city bus #25 from Valencia center.  The 50 minute ride brought us to El Palmar, a tiny village in La Albufera.  We arrived around noon and the town was deserted.  We had a 2pm lunch reservation, so we used our free time to walk the dikes that separate the rice paddies.  It is winter, so there is nothing growing.  But, it is still quite beautiful.
I am not sure if it is the local rice, the freshness of the seafood, the skill of the chef or the combination of all three, but our lunchtime paella was the best we have ever tasted.  We enjoyed an appetizer of All de Pebre, which is also a local specialty.  All is the Valenciano word for eel, and in this dish the eel is cooked with potatoes in a sauce flavored with pimento.  Delicious.  A wonderful local wine topped off a perfect lunch which we followed with a boat ride.
By magic, somehow between noon and 2:30, the town had filled up with people. The restaurants were lively and every sunny outside table was full.  By car, it is an easy trip from the city.  The locals come for a relaxing Saturday lunch.

The center of El Palmar.  There were hundreds of cafe tables set up when we arrived.  The sun had not yet burned through the clouds and it was pretty cold.  We were chuckling at the optimism of the cafes.
Tumblr media
Two hours later, the spaces along these canals were full of cafe tables which were full of happy diners.
Tumblr media
At noon, it was still cloudy, but then ....
Tumblr media
...the sun broke through.  This is looking across a flooded rice paddy to the associated farm.
Tumblr media
We walked out on the dykes which also serve as roads across the paddies.

A shallower paddy gives a better sense of how rice might actually get planted.

This is an internet photo of the rice in mid summer.  Quite a different view than what we saw.

Amazing Paella Sigñoret.

Our private barca for the tour of the lake and rice farms.

Our captain, Ernesto, was a native Valenciano speaker.  He knew enough Spanish to give us a big picture view, but not much more.  But he was very pleasant and his boat was perfect.

Heading through a canal toward the lake
Tumblr media
Despite the morning threat, it never rained but I was not unhappy to have my raincoat against the breeze.
Tumblr media
A few traditional thatched cottages, that once filled the village, still remain along the canals.

That is an eel trap behind Paul, set up by the local fishermen.

VALENCIA: Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In searching the internet for ways to practice our Spanish, I stumbled upon this group called Valencia Language Exchange. It turned out that every Friday night they had an event at Club Mya, which was a ten-minute walk from our hotel (and was that beautiful outdoor venue you see in the first two pictures). If you register, when you arrive, you get into the club for free (instead of 16€), and they give you a flag sticker of the country you’re from. This way you can find people who speak the language you want to practice. It’s a cool concept, though fairly awkward—trying to meet people who don’t natively speak your same language in a loud nightclub. But luckily some veteran Language Exchangers pulled us in to chat, and through them we were encouraged to try VLE’s weekend excursions.
The first weekend trip, they took us to El Saler beach just outside the city—supposedly known for being more picturesque and less crowded. Looked exactly the same as the crazy crowded beach that was a 30-minute walk from our hotel.. But after the afternoon at the beach, we hopped back on the bus to go to El Albufera, a national park that is sometimes a lake and sometimes a rice paddy (ask me the story if you’re interested). At this time of year, it was a lake, and they took us out into the middle of the lake to watch the sunset.
During the week, VLE has free events every night to encourage people to practice a foreign language. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, they all take place at low-key bars, so you can sit at tables with a drink and have a quiet conversation. On Wednesday nights, though, they hold the language exchange at a club called High Cube, and afterward they follow it with a salsa lesson! Granted, it’s the same salsa lesson every week...but it was still fun and it gave Aarin and me a chance to dance for free!
But the best VLE experience was the weekend excursion to Fuentes de Algar, a protected area with a river and a waterfall, a two-hour bus ride from Valencia. On the way there, Aarin and I started chatting with some people, and by the time we arrived, we had formed a small group that spent the rest of the day together and became our new friends. Jasmine—from Taiwan—who brought a water case for her phone and was our official photographer of the day, happened to be a salsa fanatic and told us all the places to go to dance and take lessons. Damaris—from England—invited us to hang out on multiple occasions after this weekend, and gave us the scoop on all the cool restaurants and hangouts around town....some of which will appear in the next post!

La Albufera
In addition to a bustling metropolis, Valencia also has a national park just 10km outside of the city. La Albufera is a freshwater lagoon to the south of Valencia’s city center. It is surrounded by rice fields and dense forests that would satisfy any nature buff. Historically, La Albufera has been an important fishing site since 1250 when it was legalized. Today, fishing generates a substantial profit with most of the catch being eels, bass, mullet, and American blue crab.
Take a boat ride through the lagoon and learn about the origins of the most famous Valencian meal- paella. You can also explore the many winding paths that surround the lagoon with or without a guide. This park has something for everyone and it is only a short bus or car ride away from the city center making it a must-do while visiting Valencia. While I visited, a third generation farmer showed us around the traditional houses, the orange groves, and we helped him pick beans for the paella. We learned about the history surrounding the area the local’s lives.

Places to see in ( Valencia - Spain ) The port city of Valencia lies on Spain’s southeastern coast, where the Turia River meets the Mediterranean Sea. It’s known for its City of Arts and Sciences, with futuristic structures including a planetarium, an oceanarium and an interactive museum. Valencia also has several beaches, including some within nearby Albufera Park, a wetlands reserve with a lake and walking trails. Valencia was founded as a Roman colony by the consul Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus in 138 BC, and called Valentia Edetanorum. In 714 Moroccan and Arab Moors occupied the city, introducing their language, religion and customs; they implemented improved irrigation systems and the cultivation of new crops as well, being capital of the Taifa of Valencia. In 1238 the Christian king James I of Aragon reconquered the city and divided the land among the nobles who helped him conquer it, as witnessed in the Llibre del Repartiment. He also created a new law for the city, the Furs of Valencia, which were extended to the rest of the Kingdom of Valencia. The city is situated on the banks of the Turia, on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula, fronting the Gulf of Valencia on the Mediterranean Sea. Its historic centre is one of the largest in Spain, with approximately 169 hectares; this heritage of ancient monuments, views and cultural attractions makes Valencia one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Valencia is integrated into an industrial area on the Costa del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast). Valencia's main festival is the Falles. The traditional Spanish dish, paella, originated in Valencia. Valencia stands on the banks of the Turia River, located on the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, fronting the Gulf of Valencia. At its founding by the Romans, it stood on a river island in the Turia, 6.4 km (4 mi) from the sea. Many local landmarks were restored, including the ancient Towers of the medieval city (Serrans Towers and Quart Towers), and the Sant Miquel dels Reis monastery (es:Monasterio de San Miguel de los Reyes), which now holds a conservation library. Whole sections of the old city, for example the Carmen Quarter, have been extensively renovated. The Paseu Marítim, a 4 km (2 mi) long palm tree-lined promenade was constructed along the beaches of the north side of the port (Platja de Les Arenes, Platja del Cabanyal and Platja de la Malva-rosa). The city has numerous convention centres and venues for trade events, among them the Feria Valencia Convention and Exhibition Centre (Institución Ferial de Valencia) and the Palau de congres (Conference Palace), and several 5-star hotels to accommodate business travelers. In its long history, Valencia has acquired many local traditions and festivals, among them the Falles, which were declared Celebrations of International Tourist Interest (Festes de Interés Turístic Internacional) on 25 January 1965 and UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage of humanity list on 30 November 2016, and the Water Tribunal of Valencia (Tribunal de les Aigües de València), which was declared an intangible cultural heritage of humanity (Patrimoni Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanitat) in 2009.
