Dakar Chaos Roundup: Stage 2

Marek Goczal became the first member of the Goczal family to be knocked off the podium in the Challenger/UTV class. He, his son Eryk, and brother Michal locked out the podium in the Prologue and Stage 1, but while Eryk and Michal maintained their 1st and 2nd place finishes respectively, Marek finished 4th. The Goczal family retains the overall podium positions, with 19 year old Eryk showing his father and uncle how it's done in his UTV Dakar debut

Carles Falcon was airlifted to hospital after a major accident towards the end of the stage. He was immediately helped by a fellow rider but did not have a pulse when medical attention arrived on the scene. He was successfully resuscitated and transported to hospital where he has since been placed in a medically induced coma. His teammate Isaac Feliu has withdrawn from the rally and travelled to be by his side

American rider Mason Klein, who took 3rd in Stage 1, suffered a major setback after mechanical issues left him stranded, trying to fix his bike, for almost 2 hours today. He was eventually able to fix the bike with the help (and mechanical parts) of his teammate but has dropped from 3rd to 45th in the overall standings

Janus van Kasteren and Aleš Loprais were separated by just 6 seconds in the truck category. Kasteren retains the overall lead by nearly 13 minutes

Carlos Sainz has responded to Nasser Al-Attiyah's previous comments with a very polite "he can think what he likes". El Matador followed this attempt at diplomacy up with an 8th place finish. This performance puts him in the overall lead by just under two minutes

Fans of Seb Loeb (me) were cured of their Stage 1 depression as the rally legend was back in form. He and Stéphane Peterhansel battled all the way to the finish line, and although he finished 2nd, Loeb is now 3rd overall, up from 19th after Stage 1

Speaking of Stéphane Peterhansel, Monsieur Dakar proved once again why they call him that. He already held the record for most Dakar victories, and now (jointly) holds the record for most Dakar stage wins (tied with Ari Vatanen) after taking his 50th stage victory

In less than 24 hours, the first big motorsports event of the year starts, the Rally Dakar 2024. And with it, the new season of the FIA W2RC.

This year, it might get interesting with a few new things, compared to last year. First, there is the 48 hour stage, that is basically a extremely long stage with four night camps on the route, and the drivers have to stop at the next camp, after a specific time, to rest for the night. In the morning they'll have to continue the race from there and the time will continue to run. There won't be any service from their crew at night. It's basically the evolution of the marathon stage.

Nasser Al-Attiyah will be driving one of the Prodrive Hunter this year and is now a teammate of Sebastien Loeb. Which means one of the best rally pilots ever and one of the best rally raid pilots ever are now driving for the same team. It will be interesting to see who'll be the better one, but my prediction is Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Nasser's seat in the Toyota Hilux now goes to Seth Quintero from the USA. He was one of the top drivers, in the last two years, in the T3 category for lightweight prototypes. I think he is a good addition to the team and will make a good job. If he will be racing for the win in his first T1+ year is hard to answer, but I'd give him a year, instead of thinking he can win this year.

Will Audi finally be able to demonstrate that a electric car can win the Dakar? The car is definitely fast enough, and also the drivers are, especially with Stephane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz. But what about the reliability? That was the big weakness in the last two years, maybe they will finally have a Dakar without too many problems. If yes, they will probably win.

Joan Barreda Bort is now driving for Hero. Will he finally win his first Dakar, or will he once again, lose it because of one of his many mistakes and crashes? He is fast enough for the win, he just needs to reduce his mistakes and maybe take a bit less risk.

Or will the win go back to KTM, after Honda won last year? The bike category will be as interesting as never before, at least if you take the last 20 years.

The truck category will get very unpredictable again. The second year without Kamaz and the third year without MAZ means that the Iveco of the DeRooy team and the czech MM Technology Iveco, driven by Martin Maczik, will be the big favorites. But Ales Loprais is always good for a surprise with his Praga.

IVECO sale con todo a ganar el Dakar 2023 en camiones: Cuatro máquinas en dos equipos del Team de Rooy

La categoría Camiones será interesante tal vez por motivos distintos a los esperados. La guerra en Ucrania ha dejado excluída fuera de competencia a KAMAZ y MAZ, por lo que los grandes favoritos de los últimos años no estarán presentes en Arabia Saudita. Esto abre las puertas a otras escuderías y marcas, y tal vez la más laureada de ellas es IVECO. Además de algunas entradas privadas, el equipo oficial Team de Rooy irá con dos estructuras al Dakar 2023 y un total de cuatro camiones IVECO Powerstar de 1.000 HP.

El equipo de Rooy tiene nuevos auspiciadores y la primera estructura será llamada Eurol Team de Rooy IVECO, contando con el joven Mitchel van der Brink a bordo de la unidad 511, el récordman de la categoría al debutar con 16 años en 2019. Mitchel fue P10 en 2022. Además, por este equipo irá Martin van der Brink con la unidad 506, viniendo de un sexto puesto en 2022.

En tanto, la escudería Boss Machinery Team de Rooy IVECO estará formada por Janus van Kasteren Jr. a bordo de la unidad 502 intentando mejorar la quinta posición de 2022 y  Vick Versteijnen en la unidad 504 cuyo mejor resultado es la P24 de 2016 y registró un abandono en su última participación en 2021.

Otros candidatos que deberá vencer IVECO en este Dakar son el campeón del mundo de la categoría T5, Kees Koolen, Martin Macik, Pascal de Baar, Tomas Vratny y Ales Loprais.

Sport nesleduju, ale dnešní zprávy mě nasraly.

Nějaký č*rák lezl na Dakaru kam neměl- za dunu, do cesty aut- a přejeli ho. Co je to za kokota, co vleze kvůli fotce prakticky do dráhy, navíc kde ho z toho vysokého náklaďáku nemůže nikdo vidět?

Řidič- náš Loprais- z toho pochopitelně vypadal totálně v prdeli. Jeden kretén mu vlastní nezodpovědností zmrví závod, narozeniny a pravděpodobně způsobí trauma jak kráva na celý život. Hovado. Takovýhle by na podobných akcích vůbec neměli co dělat.

Martin Prokop zajel ve třetí etapě Rallye Dakar sedmnáctý čas a v celkovém hodnocení kategorie automobilů klesl na 7. místo. Motocyklový jezdec Martin Michek byl dnes třináctý a v průběžném pořadí se posunul na 22. pozici před krajana Jana Brabce, který se po dodatečné penalizaci propadl o tři příčky za něj. Al Attiyah y Sanders sigue en cabeza

Luego de una muy fuerte lluvia que cayó sobre la zona de Ha’il y todo el norte de Arabia Saudí, el uruguayo Lafuente junto a la saudí Akeel pudieron subir algunas posiciones.

Un día que en el recorrido, arena y montañas con altura máxima de 1500 metros donde a pese a encontrar piedra y roca en algunos tramos de la etapa, las pistas arenosas ocupaban un 85 % de la especial, de las que un 4 % eran directamente dunas. Cuando se observan los 333 km de tramos cronometrados, esas cifras cobran un sentido muy distinto al de los meros porcentajes. David Castera ya había avisado y recordado estas condiciones en la reunión informativa de la víspera: los pilotos debían estar preparados para “entrar de lleno en la carrera”. No serán ni Stéphane Peterhansel ni Carlos Sainz quienes digan lo contrario. Con este primer plato, los Audi de estas dos leyendas se han ido más que servidos.

MEJORARON

Luego de cerrarse la primera etapa, vemos que Sergio “Osito” Lafuente que está navegando a la saudí Dania Akeel del equipo South Racing Middle East ahora están 16ºen la T3 FIA Prototipos Ligeros con un tiempo total de 6H 05' 37'' a una diferencia de 1h44m02s y han sufrido una penalización de 15 minutos. Ahora están en el apartado de Rookie en el 5º lugar

LO ESENCIAL

Hoy era un día de no perder posiciones y la etapa no era nada fácil, incluso desde un puesto tan ventajoso como el que se aseguró ayer Daniel Sanders al vencer a base de puño y maestría. Como cabía esperar, el australiano eligió salir en 15ª posición según lo permitido por el nuevo reglamento del Dakar, pero se ha dedicado a rebasar uno a uno a los 14 anteriores hasta llegar el primero a la línea de meta de la especial. Mejor tiempo, claro está, para el piloto de GasGas, con 2’07’’ de ventaja sobre Pablo Quintanilla. El chileno de Honda se mantiene 2º de la general, a 3’07’’ del doble vencedor de etapa. Por detrás, Matthias Walkner ha superado la barrera de los dos minutos, mientras que muchos de los favoritos se han metido en un jardín definitivo: Kevin Benavides está a 36’, Joan Barreda a 41’, Toby Price a 47’ y Nacho Cornejo a 53’.

Nasser Al-Attiyah salió en modo emperador en 10ª posición. De hecho, se limitó a quitarse de en medio cuanto antes a los nueve automóviles anteriores. Sébastien Loeb, el único que pudo seguirle el ritmo, decidió con mucho juicio que lo mejor era ponerse a rueda de la pareja formada por Al-Attiyah y Baumel, los cuales no han cometido ni un solo error de navegación. El campeón catarí dispone ya de 12’ de ventaja sobre Loeb, y si bien Martin Prokop logró salvar algo los muebles, la mayoría de sus rivales mordieron el polvo sin piedad. De hecho, la diferencia es irrecuperable para los Audi de Stéphane Peterhansel y Carlos Sainz.

En Prototipos Ligeros, Quintero sigue dando espectáculo, pero el partido aún no ha acabado porque “Chaleco” López sigue al joven estadounidense en la general a 1’58’’. En SSV, el dominio sigue siendo polaco, pero Aron Domżała ha reemplazado a Marek Goczał en lo más alto de la clasificación.

El azul sigue pisando fuerte en camiones y el campeón vigente Dmitry Sotnikov ha recortado diferencias con Eduard Nikolaev, pero Aleš Loprais ha logrado colarse en la 3ª posición para romper la monotonía cromática.

UN DURO REVÉS

Stéphane Peterhansel, 14º en la general al término de la especial clasificatoria del sábado, pudo aprovechar al máximo las trazadas de sus rivales para remontar puestos con rapidez desde el principio de la etapa. Tras pasar entre los líderes por el primer punto de cronometraje, la especial se ha frenado en seco para Monsieur Dakar en el km 153 cuando se le ha roto el eje trasero del Audi RS Q e-tron. Si el francés no acaba tirando la toalla, lo que parece claro es que la 15ª victoria en el Dakar no llegaría este año.

En el equipo Audi, los percances no han acabado ahí, puesto que Carlos Sainz ha perdido más de dos horas al extraviarse a la altura del km 250. Para “El Matador”, relegado ahora al 32º puesto de la general, un nuevo triunfo en el Dakar parece cada vez más un espejismo inalcanzable.

"Estoy muy decepcionado. ¿Cuántos se han perdido ahí? No todos somos idiotas. Si quieren hacerlo así y que el segundo día pase esto... una pena", expresó un enfadado Sainz al llegar al campamento.

Chaleco López y Juan Pablo Latrach viven dramático día en cruce de río, pero sigue adelante en carrera

Uno de los días más duros para Francisco Chaleco López y su navegante Juan Pablo Latrach en lo que llevan de carrera en los SSV luego de que se vieran afectados por una fuerte crecida de río por la tormenta, mientras intentaban continuar con su especial. Mientras López se mantuvo acelerando el buggy para evitar que se lo llevara la corriente, Latrach bajó a intentar sacarlo con unos camiones y una cuerda y estuvo cerca de ser arrastrado por la corriente. Afortunadamente, con la ayuda de los camiones de los líderes de la clase Ales Loprais y Janus van Kasteren, tanto López/Latrach como su compañera de equipo Cristina Gutiérrez pudieron salir del río y completar los kilómetros hasta que se neutralizó la carrera por la tormenta. 

Seguro cuando ASO anunció que aumentarían las dunas, los kilómetros y los días de carrera, no esperábamos que el clima jugara un papel como algunas veces afectó a competidores en Sudamérica tanto en Bolivia como en Argentina. Sin embargo, las lluvias fueron muy intensas y comenzaron en un periodo corto, dejando sin reacción a muchos competidores que debieron sobrevivir en la ruta en un barrial total. 

“Empezó a caer una tormenta y fue cada vez más fuerte, había un pequeño río que finalmente no era un pequeño río, sino que un tremendo río. Nos quedamos ahí y en cinco minutos prácticamente pasó el agua por arriba. Nunca me bajé del auto, porque si me bajaba sabía que lo iba a perder. Flotamos varios metros, quedamos al otro lado, nos sacó un camión, ahí paramos un buen rato para que se secara todo. La carrera ya la descartábamos. Mucho frío, hipotermia y estuvimos a punto de perder el auto que fue lo más complejo” detalló Chaleco en el bivouac, recién calmándose de una situación muy difícil. “A Juan Pablo prácticamente casi se lo lleva el río, las imágenes antes que llegara el helicóptero fueron más complejas, porque yo estaba al otro lado del río y fue tanta el agua que el auto flotó y eso me dejó al otro lado del río y Juan Pablo cruzó al otro lado y ahí casi se lo lleva el río, pero pudo cruzar”

Pese a las circunstancias fuera de su control, Chaleco López terminó a más de una hora de los líderes Austin Jones y Seth Quintero terminando provisionalmente fuera de los 30 primeros y cayendo fuera del Top 5 general. Lo importante es que están bien y que llevaron el auto temprano al bivouac para dejarlo listo para volver a salir mañana, esperando que las condiciones lo permitan.
