Mwah ha ha
I certainly hope so
More eloquent people than me have noted and criticized how the social justice angle in Alethi society got really shoved to the side and kinda ignored, especially in Kaladin's story.
It's good to see this
I hope we get to see more of such things *actually* like occurring, people at the bottom pushing the change, not just depending on goodwill from people at the top.

We don't know much about Alethela in the shadow days. We do know that Nohaden, an Alethi king, founded the Knights Radiant.
It also seems clear that there remained a strong link between the Alethi and the Radiants for long afterwards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The number 10 appears a lot in Vorin culture, but I wonder if there is a link between the fact that the Radiants were divided into 10 orders and Alethela was divided into 10 princedoms.
Did each princedom have a specific order associated with it? Which order was Kholinar associated with and what does this mean?

reasons why alethkar is just poland in 17th-18th century:
overly enthusiastic about wars and conquest
bizarre expectations based on one's gender
lots of religious zealots
always drinking alcohol
most nobles usually carry a sword with them
sword duels are extremely popular
dukes and princes have really big influence on country's politics
fancy outfits

reasons why alethkar is just poland in 2023:
bizarre expectations based on one's gender
lots of religious zealots
always drinking alcohol
ceased to exist in the past
didn't exist as an independent country for generations
more than half of the population doesn't read any books
clever women discovering invisible magical energy

sooo in chapter 30 renarin saw a vision of himself on a throne in his childhood room in kholinar, wearing singer clothing. not that his visions are 100% accurate but i am thinking about that. a lot

reading row chapter 54 again (fork spotted in kitchen etc) and this part is genuinely so brutal. like. renarin lost his mother, who he was very close to, at a young age, and was treated pretty poorly by dalinar – his only remaining parent – for the majority of his childhood/teen years. and it clearly means so much to him to see how hard dalinar is trying now, how he's making a real concerted effort to get to know renarin and be a better father – imagine how devastating it must be to finally build a relationship with a previously neglectful parent and truly experience having a loving and attentive father for the first time in your life, only to find out that he was the one who killed your mother. how do you come to terms with the fact that your mother died a horrific, painful death and your father, who you're only now finally getting to know as a real parent, was the one who made it happen?
and even the language he uses to describe it is so telling: "she hadn't lived" and "odium had seen her killed" are both technically true statements, but they're also very passive. he's not acknowledging the actual core of the issue here, which is that dalinar is the one who killed her. it wasn't intentional and he was being influenced by the thrill, but ultimately, he still did it. of course renarin can't look that fact directly in the face; it's not just that he would lose his father, it's that he's finally learned what it's like to actually have his father for the first time in his life and if he truly acknowledges how angry he is about his mother's death he'd lose him again

Cosmeretober day 3: Spicy
Because I am a gremlin and I think the whole Alethi “women’s left hands are inappropriate to show” is amusing to play off of. So here’s an Alethi left hand with a fishnet glove.

Complete reversal on the "my dad can beat up your dad" and I'm here for it
I love that step one in Dalinar's grand plan to Unite Them is essentially My Son Can Beat Up You Son.
Which is probably a standard Alethi bragging right--you hear your kid beat up another kid, you go straight to that kid's house so you can rub it in their dad's face.

Okay this is cool though because Brandon based other things on this too! (whether or not he intended to make singer burial traditions Jewish) He mentioned once that Alethi names/Vorin languages are based on Hebrew/Arabic names. Darkeyes of low rank have less Hebrew names, with the names getting closer and closer to actual Hebrew the higher the rank in lighteyes.

WoK ch. 55:
“Parshman workers,” Sigzil explained. “They’re allowed to care for their own dead; it’s one of the few things they seem passionate about. They grow irate if anyone else handles the bodies. They wrap them in linen and carry them out into the wilderness and leave them on slabs of stone.”
Look if Brandon didn’t want me to hyperfixate on the singers he shouldn’t have given the parshmen Jewish burial customs.

TWoK chapter 8 death rattle:
“Victory! We stand stop the mount! We scatter them before us! Their homes become our dens, their lands are now our farms! And they shall burn, as we once did, in a place that is hollow and forlorn.”
—Collected on Ishashan, 1172, 18 seconds pre-death. Subject was a light-eyed spinster of the eighth dahn.
This sounds to me like the human conquest of Roshar. Specifically “And they shall burn, as we once did” makes me think they’re comparing sending the Singers to Braize/Damnation to humanity burning Ashyn. That might mean that this is a description of the first (or at least an early) Desolation, when Fused would indeed be sent to Braize.

Random Stormlight/Cosmere thoughts
My sadistic mind think Moash should make it post-timeskip character along with Gavinor.
Moash will no longer be Vyre and try to make amends to people like Kaladin and bridge 4, but never regret his decision with Elhokar.
Why? I just want to see the fuck Moash crowd's brains melt. Should they be pro-Gavinor revenge plot or not? Like what if Moash is no longer a convenient target for revenge like Amaram who turned out to be the cartoon villain and Kaladin can get his sweet resolution.

Actually, thinking about it, Alethkar is always in a state of civil war - that's what all those skirmishes were that Kaladin was fighting in the flashbacks
lowkey manifesting alethkar civil war in kowt (or wat apparently) because there’s been too much consequence free shit for too long I’m sorry but it’s true
