The Newcastle MP Chi is calling to promote STEM
On Tuesday Chi Onwurah who is the Labour MP for Newcastle Upon Tyne Central wrote two questions to the Government that both focused on STEM. This is very good for an MP to be challenging the Government. The questions and answers are below. Along with her being the Newcastle MP she is also the Labour Shadow Minister for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The person who responded the first…

latest redfield poll / electoral calculus forecast shows 24 tory seats – basically forming the worst case scenario for them
this puts them at under half the seats of the liberals, meaning ed davey would be leader of the opposition. only two current cabinet secretaries would keep their seats, barclay and donelan. the current cabinet, excluding ministers-in-attendance, has 23 members, so the tories would struggle to form any unofficial shadow cabinet without lords, and the lords is up for abolition
this is one of the last major polls taken before the resignation of richard tice as leader of reform. despite the fact that reform’s propaganda claim they’re targeting labour voters, it’s repeatedly shown that it’s tory voters that they attract. although this poll may be hyperbolic, the increasing momentum that reform now has will increase the probability of it coming to pass – with more tories going to reform, labour has a greater chance of winning tory seats as their majorities spoil. i love democracy
The Entire 24:
Gavin Williamson [former secretary]
Chris Loder
Caroline Nokes [former minister]
Michelle Donelan (technology secretary)

Champion for Small Biz Appointed: Shirley Cooper OBE
Tumblr media
In a significant move to bolster the interests of small businesses within the governmental framework, Shirley Cooper OBE has assumed the role of Crown Representative for small businesses. This appointment heralds a new era of advocacy and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK, especially in navigating the opportunities presented by the newly implemented Procurement Act.
A New Advocate for SMEs
Pioneering Change and Opportunity Shirley Cooper, with her rich background in procurement and supply chain management, met with Parliamentary Secretary Alex Burghart to outline the roadmap for her tenure. Their discussions revolved around ensuring that the Procurement Act, coming into effect in October, fully benefits startups and small businesses through simplified processes and improved access to government contracts.   Building on a Legacy Cooper aims to continue the groundbreaking work of her predecessor, Martin Traynor OBE, particularly in leveraging the reforms introduced by the Procurement Act 2023. Her mission is to ensure that SMEs not only have enhanced opportunities to work with the government but also contribute to achieving the best value in public procurement.
Strengthening Government-SME Relationships
Record SME Engagement Under Cooper's leadership, the government seeks to increase its engagement with SMEs, building on the record £21.0 billion worth of work awarded to them in 2021/2022. With the government's annual procurement spend at around £300 billion, there is substantial scope for SMEs to gain from this vast market.   Advocacy and Promotion Cooper's role transcends the operational aspects of procurement; she will be a vocal advocate for small businesses, promoting their agenda within and outside the government. Her extensive experience in both the private and public sectors positions her well to bridge the gap between government procurement practices and the needs of SMEs.
A Critical Juncture for Small Businesses
Leveraging the Procurement Act The Procurement Act's reforms, poised to dismantle barriers for small businesses vying for government contracts, come at a critical time. Cooper's appointment is timely, ensuring that SMEs are well-equipped to navigate the new procurement landscape and capitalize on the opportunities it presents.   A Diverse Background of Leadership Shirley Cooper's career spans significant achievements and leadership roles across sectors, including co-founding the award-winning start-up law firm Tapestry and serving as a global procurement director. Her commitment to economic development and social impact, coupled with her accolades for services to women’s empowerment and equality, underscores her dedication to fostering inclusive growth.
Looking Ahead
A Strategic Vision for SME Empowerment As Cooper embarks on her journey as Crown Representative, her strategic vision for SME empowerment is clear. Working closely with the Cabinet Office’s Small Business Advisory Panel, departments, suppliers, and trade bodies, she aims to level the playing field for small businesses, startups, and social enterprises. Her role is pivotal in ensuring these entities can compete for and win more government contracts, marking a significant step forward in the UK's commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive economy.
Conclusion
Shirley Cooper OBE's appointment as the Crown Representative for small businesses opens up new avenues for SMEs to thrive in the UK's governmental procurement ecosystem. With a focus on maximizing the benefits of the Procurement Act, Cooper is set to champion the cause of small businesses, ensuring they have a strong voice and fair opportunities in competing for government contracts.   Sources: THX News & Cabinet Office. Fujitsu: MPs seek details on public sector contracts with IT firm
Reuters
By Harrison Jones
BBC News
The Treasury and HMRC are among 21 public sector organisations being asked by MPs to reveal details of any contracts handed to Fujitsu after the Post Office computer system scandal.
The Commons Treasury Committee says it wants to discover the extent to which taxpayers’ money has been spent on contracts with the company since 2019.
That is when the High Court ruled prosecutions were wrongly brought based on Fujitsu’s faulty Horizon IT system.
Fujitsu has apologised for its role.
The company has also said it will not bid for further government contracts until the public inquiry into the scandal is complete.
One estimate has suggested that Fujitsu secured more than £4bn of business from the government in the last five years, even after information about the defects involving Horizon emerged.
The Treasury Committee’s letter has also been sent to the Royal Mint, the Bank of England, the Crown Estate and the Financial Conduct Authority.
The MPs are seeking details about any contracts awarded to Fujitsu Services Limited or other Fujitsu Global-owned entities.
“There is public concern about the extent to which they are used as the government supplier,” Harriett Baldwin, who chairs the Treasury Committee, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Saturday.
Ms Baldwin told the BBC earlier that the public outcry was entirely justified, adding that she spoke for the whole Committee “when I express my horror at the injustices the victims faced” and said Fujitsu had questions to answer.
She said: “I think it’s important we can see the extent to which taxpayer money has been spent with Fujitsu since the High Court ruling as they are simultaneously assessed on their fitness to remain a government supplier.”
Between 1999 and 2015, the Post Office privately prosecuted hundreds of sub-postmasters and postmistresses based on the Horizon system, which had produced faulty accounts. Victims were wrongly accused of offences including theft, fraud and false accounting.

Fujitsu: We let society down over Post Office role
Some went to prison and others have died without being able to seek justice.
Only 93 wrongful convictions have so far been overturned, while thousands are still waiting for compensation settlements more than 20 years on.
The government this month announced plans to exonerate and compensate victims of the scandal, following an ITV drama on the subject which sparked widespread public outrage.
Getty Images
The letter, which calls for a reply within a fortnight, asks about the value of any contracts, whether they were awarded through open competition, if the issues with the Horizon system were taken into account, and what monitoring of Fujitsu’s performance was in place.
Questions also include whether the contracts went through a tendering process, the extent to which the company’s role in the scandal was considered as part of the due diligence process and whether they considered terminating contracts with the company at any stage.
Fujitsu admits ‘moral’ duty to pay Post Office victims
How Post Office drama shone light on scandal
The Japanese firm at the heart of the Horizon scandal
The UK government continued to award billions of pounds worth of public contracts to Fujitsu even after information about the scandal involving Horizon emerged.
But Cabinet Office Minister Alex Burghart has said the technology firm had written to his department to say that it would not bid for public contracts while the public inquiry was ongoing.
On Friday, the boss of Fujitsu’s European arm, Paul Patterson, told the inquiry the company had “clearly let society down, and the sub-postmasters down”.
The company has said it has a “moral obligation” to help compensate victims.

You cannot keep someone locked up.
Kill their raven.
Not apologizing for killing said raven.
Blame them for you choosing to not free them
And tell them the only way for them to go free (with no proof other than to trust you. After proving you are not trustworthy) is if they promise not to come after you
I kinda lost a lotta sympathy points for Alex after Jessamy. And he is responsible for his own actions.

It is great for our LSIP to be approved by the Government
It is very positive that last Friday the Government submitted provision for one of our region’s education elements and it was very encouraging that the Department for Education (DfE) published the Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIP) for Sussex. This recent information for the Sussex LSIP can be obtained from both the DfE website and also the Sussex Chamber of Commerce website in their education…

Shot from one of the boxes, resulting in an extreme angle (think near-perpendicular) so you can see into the wings and watch the actors slacking. Sound is great and it’s very well shot for a vid of its age though there is a touch of gen loss. Circle of Life is near perfect despite a little bit of washout. The Lion King - National Tour - June 5, 2010 FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Andre Jackson (Simba), Brent Harris (Scar), Frank Wright II (u/s Mufasa), Marja Harmon (Nala), Phindile Mkhize (Rafiki), Jered Tanner (u/s Pumbaa), Sophia Stephens (u/s Shenzi), Jerome Stephens Jr (Young Simba), Jamariana Tribble (Young Nala) NOTES: A couple of blackouts during Circle of Life and first couple of minutes of act two, otherwise nice capture. The Lion King - West End - September 30, 2001 FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Roger Wright (Simba), Rob Edwards (Scar), Ray Shell (Mufasa), Javine Hilton (Nala), Sharon D Clarke (Rafiki), Ian Hughes (Timon), Howard Crossley (Pumbaa), Eric Mallett (Zazu) NOTES: No picture for first 15 minutes and then great picture; good sound all the way and nice closeups at times. Rare! The Little Mermaid - Broadway - January 30, 2008 (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Sierra Boggess (Ariel), Sherie Rene Scott (Ursula), Bret Shuford (u/s Prince Eric), Norm Lewis (King Triton), Tituss Burgess (Sebastian), Eddie Korbich (Scuttle), Jonathan Freeman (Grimsby), Derrick Baskin (Jetsam), Tyler Maynard (Flotsam), Cody Hanford (Flounder), Heidi Blickenstaff (Carlotta), John Treacy Egan (Chef Louis) NOTES: Great capture with great closups. The first 11 minutes after the overture are mostly blackouts due to late comers, after that no real problems. Bret did a nice job as understudy. Sierra and Sherie still rock with much greatness! Also includes the Part of Your World performance and interview on The View. A- The Little Mermaid - The Netherlands - 2012 (Highlights) FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Jantien Euwe/Tessa van Tol (Ariel), Britt Lenting (u/s Ursula), Mischa Kiek/Tommie Christiaan (Prince Eric), Roberto de Groot (Sebastian) NOTES: Highlights for about 35 minutes from different shows The Little Mermaid - The Netherlands - 2013 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Tessa van Tol (Ariel), Ellis van Laarhoven (alt Ursula), Tommie Christiaan (Prince Eric), Marc-Peter van der Maas (u/s King Triton), Juan Wells (Sebastian), Martijn Vogel (Flounder) NOTES: No zooms and some heads in the way. In act 2 mostly pointed too high. C/D quality Little Miss Sunshine - UK Tour - May, 2019 (hitmewithyourbethshot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Evie Gibson (Olive Hoover), Gabriel Vick (Richard Hoover), Lucy O’Byrne (Sheryl Hoover), Paul Keating (Frank Hoover), Mark Moraghan (Grandpa Hoover), Sev Keoshgerian (Dwayne Hoover), Imelda Warren-Green (Linda/Miss California), Matthew McDonald (Josh/Kirby), Ian Carlyle (Larry/Buddy) A Little Night Music - New York City Opera - November 7, 1990 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Sally Ann Howes (Desiree Armfeldt), Regina Resnik (Madame Armfeldt), George Lee Andrews (Fredrik Egerman), Beverly Lambert (Anne Egerman), Kevin Anderson (Henrik Egerman), Michael Maguire (Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm), Maureen Moore (Countess Charlotte Malcolm), Susan Terry (Petra), Danielle Ferland (Fredrika Armfeldt), Ron Baker (Mr. Lindquist), Lisa Saffer (Mrs. Nordstrom), Barbara Shirvis (Mrs. Anderssen), Michael Rees Davis (Mr. Erlanson), Susanne Marsee (Mrs. Segstrom), David Comstock (Frid) NOTES: Production at Lincoln Center, PBS aired, pro-shot. Very slight generational loss. A Little Night Music - Théâtre Du Châtelet - 2010 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Greta Scacchi (Desiree Armfeldt), Leslie Caron (Madame Armfeldt), Lambert Wilson (Fredrik Egerman), Rebecca Bottone (Anne Egerman), David Curry (Henrik Egerman), Nicholas Garrett (Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm), Deanne Meek (Countess Charlotte Malcolm), Francesca Jackson (Petra), Celeste de Veazey (Fredrika Armfeldt) NOTES: This is the first production of Sondheim's show ever in France. Produced at the world-famous Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. In English and full stage shot with clear sound but no closeups. A Little Shop of Horrors - American Musical Theater Of San Jose - January-February, 2008 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Josh Lamon (Seymour), Christiane Noll (Audrey), Hal Linden (Mushnik), Todd Alan Johnson (Orin), Michael Mandell (Audrey II), Kristin McDonald (Crystal), Izetta Fang (Ronnette), Adrienne Miller (Chiffon) NOTES: Single camera on tripod, mix of full-stage and mid-range shots, soundboard Little Shop of Horrors - Encores! Off-Center - July 1, 2015 (Opening Night) (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Jake Gyllenhaal (Seymour), Ellen Greene (Audrey), Joe Grifasi (Mushnik), Taran Killam (Orin), Eddie Cooper (Audrey II), Marva Hicks (Crystal), Ramona Keller (Ronnette), Tracy Nicole Chapman (Chiffon) NOTES: Opening Night filmed from the very back of City Center, so there is some spotlight washout that's never too bad and a head that's shot well around. A- Little Shop of Horrors - Encores! Off-Center - July 2, 2015 (Matinee) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Jake Gyllenhaal (Seymour), Ellen Greene (Audrey), Joe Grifasi (Mushnik), Taran Killam (Orin), Eddie Cooper (Audrey II), Marva Hicks (Crystal), Ramona Keller (Ronnette), Tracy Nicole Chapman (Chiffon) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the Encores Summer Series. Ellen and Jake were perfection and this was the 2015 show that was not to be missed! The last 15 mins (customers coming in and song/scene finale don't feed the plants) are mostly blind shot, where a few times no action can be seen. Everything else is there and beautiful. A- Little Shop of Horrors - Off-Broadway Revival - January 24, 2020 (Highlights) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Gideon Glick (Seymour), Tammy Blanchard (Audrey), Tom Alan Robbins (Mushnik), Christian Borle (Orin), Kingsley Leggs (Audrey II), Salome Smith (Crystal), Ari Groover (Ronnette), Joy Woods (Chiffon) NOTES: Highlights include from "Dentist!" to "Mushnik and Son" and from "Suddenly Seymour" to "Suppertime" Little Shop of Horrors - Pasadena Playhouse - October 13, 2019 FORMAT:  MOV (HD) CAST: George Salazar (Seymour), MJ Rodriguez (Audrey), Kevin Chamberlin (Mushnik), Matthew Wilkas (Orin), Amber Riley (Audrey II), Cheyenne Isabel Wells (Crystal), Brittany Campbell (Ronnette), Tickwanya Jones (Chiffon), Brittany Campbell, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Tickwanya Jones NOTES: Includes the full show and the curtain call. There is some drifting in Act One, but it isn’t as prevalent in Act Two. There are a lot of obstructions, but I was (mostly) able to film around them. The only part that was really blocked was Somewhere That’s Green. Somewhere That’s Green (Reprise) is the only majorly whitewashed part, but other than that it’s not too much of an issue. Overall, it’s a pretty decent capture of the show, considering it’s my first video master. Little Women - Broadway - December 11, 2004 (Preview) FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Sutton Foster (Jo), Danny Gurwin (Laurie), Megan McGinnis (Beth), Jenny Powers (Meg), Amy McAlexander (Amy), Maureen McGovern (Marmee), Janet Carroll (Aunt March), John Hickok (Professor Bhaer), Robert Stattel (Mr. Laurence), Jim Weitzer (Mr. Brooke) NOTES: Excellent video capture of the show! A little spotlight washout in the first 15 mins. Sound is excellent throughout. Also includes short Preview piece from NY1. Lizzie - Amherst - April 7, 2018 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Kiely Mugford (Lizzie Borden), Emma Ratshin (Emma Borden), Willa Grimes (Alice Russell), Dominique Manuel (Bridget Sullivan) NOTES: This is a proshot/house cam that the production company (Amherst College Green Room) has posted online in full 1080p resolution. Fuzzy video quality, audio is fine. The frame rate seems to be low so the video lags.

Business reporter, BBC News
Fujitsu has told the government it will not bid for public contracts while the inquiry into the Post Office scandal continues.
Minister Alex Burghart said the technology firm had written to the Cabinet Office to inform it of the decision.
Fujitsu developed the Horizon software used by the Post Office which was later found to be faulty.
It is linked to one of the UK’s most widespread miscarriages of justice.
More than 900 sub-postmasters and postmistresses were prosecuted after faulty software incorrectly made it look like money was missing from their branches.
Mr Burghart told the House of Commons on Thursday: “This morning (the) Cabinet Office received a letter from Fujitsu voluntarily undertaking not to bid for government contracts whilst the inquiry is ongoing, unless of course the government ask them to.”
The government has continued to award billions of pounds worth of public contracts to Fujitsu even after it emerged that faults in its Horizon accountancy software made it look like there were shortfalls at Post Office branches.
It led to hundreds of branch managers being wrongly prosecuted for theft and false accounting.
Mr Burghart made the statement after Sir David Davis, the former cabinet minister, asked that companies such as Fujitsu be blocked from bidding for government contracts because of “terrible track records”.
The Financial Times had reported that the Cabinet Office had wanted to stop using Fujitsu for IT contracts on the basis of its past performance.
The newspaper said that government lawyers said it would not be possible legally to discriminate against firms based on their track record.
But Sir David told the House of Commons: “Government lawyers advised this could not be done. They’re wrong.”
He asked: “So will the government give further serious thought to blocking large companies like Fujitsu, with terrible track records from bidding for future contracts? And if absolutely necessary legislate accordingly?”
At that point, Mr Burghart announced that Fujitsu had voluntarily stepped back from bidding for future government contracts.
The Post Office – which is wholly-owned by the government – still uses Horizon and it paid Fujitsu £95m to extend the system for a further two years after plans to move to Amazon were abandoned.
On Tuesday, Paul Patterson, Fujitsu’s European boss, apologised for the firm’s role in the scandal.
He said that the Post Office knew about “bugs and errors” in the Horizon software early on. However, the Post Office carried on with the prosecutions.
At a hearing before MPs, Mr Patterson also said that Fujitsu had a “moral obligation” to contribute to compensation for sub-postmasters wrongly prosecuted as a result of its faulty software.
On Thursday, Fujitsu Group, which is based in Japan, said that it would “be working with the UK government on the appropriate actions, including contribution to compensation”.
It added: “The UK statutory public inquiry, to which our UK subsidiary is providing full co-operation, is examining complex events that have unfolded over many years, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to this co-operation.
“The Fujitsu Group hopes for a swift resolution that ensures a just outcome for the victims.”
