Angelico Fra didn’t understand the obsession with baked goods.
He was a vampire, after all. Bread meant nothing. Pastries, cream-filled things, cinnamon swirls — all nonsense. Empty calories. Pointless ingredients. Fickle human joys. He was more interested in things like elegance, power, control — not flour.
And yet...
There he stood. Inside a sunlit bakery, the air warm and sweet, thick with the scent of caramelized sugar and vanilla glaze. Commoners lined up out the door. Nobles sent servants just to get a crumb of your creations. Royalty? They begged for commissions. And in the middle of it all, like a sun that refused to be ignored, was you.
You weren’t just a baker. You were THE baker.
Flour smudged your cheek, your sleeves rolled up to the elbows, your hands a blur of motion as you prepared another perfect tray of almond tarts. People spoke your name with reverence, even as they fought over the last custard bun like war dogs.
Angelico had meant to stop by only once. Curiosity, really.
Now it was his third day in a row.
And he hated it.
Not the bakery. Not the treats. You.
He hated how he couldn’t stop watching you. How you hummed to yourself, how you grinned when you saw people smile at their food. How, despite being a mortal with nothing sharp or monstrous in you, you captivated him like no royal court ever could.
He hated how the sun looked good on you.
He leaned against the corner of your counter that day, arms crossed, expression unimpressed. “You’re covered in dough again.”
You glanced at him briefly, lips curled in amusement. “You’re still here.”
He ignored that. “You know, your obsession with food is… excessive. You could do anything. Why waste it all baking?”
You laughed, and he hated how light it sounded. Like the smell of honey in spring.
“I don’t bake to impress vampires,” you said simply. “I bake for people who feel something when they taste joy.”
“Tch. So dramatic.”
“You’d know.”
He narrowed his eyes.
You leaned closer, elbows resting on the counter, and Angelico found himself rooted in place.
“You’re curious, though. That’s why you keep coming back.”
“I came to find out if the fuss was warranted.”
“And?”
“…Still gathering data,” he muttered.
You grinned and pushed a small tart across the counter. “Then taste it.”
He looked at it like it was poison.
“I don’t eat this.”
“Then trust me.”
Angelico stared at the tart. Then at you. You, with your sun-warmed skin, your flour-covered fingers, your too-human heart.
And for some reason, he reached for it.
But instead of eating it, he said, “I’d rather taste you.”
The tray slipped in your hand.
The words had escaped him before he could bite them back. But now that they were out, he didn’t flinch. Instead, he smiled lazily, fangs glinting just enough.
“Now that’s dramatic,” you whispered, cheeks warm.
“I’m very hungry,” he replied, voice low.
You rolled your eyes. “You’re the worst customer.”
“Then ban me.”
You didn’t. And he kept coming.

The world didn’t know.
Not yet.
To the nobles, you were the radiant, beloved baker who had tamed even the most critical palates. To the common folk, you were a miracle worker with butter and sugar. And to the Purebloods, Angelico Fra was still the aloof, impossibly elegant vampire too refined for anything so pedestrian as a croissant.
But behind the kitchen doors?
He was sitting on your countertop. Legs swinging idly, his head resting against your shoulder, arms loosely draped around your waist like a lazy, possessive cat.
You moved around him like clockwork, unfazed. Rolling dough. Filling tarts. Dusting sugar. Angelico had claimed this perch three days ago and never left.
He nuzzled the curve of your neck, inhaling.
“You still smell like cinnamon,” he murmured.
“That’s because I’m baking cinnamon rolls,” you said, gesturing to the pan in front of him.
“Mhm,” he drawled, nosing at the nape of your neck. “I prefer blood to dough.”
“You prefer the idea of me covered in sugar,” you teased, glancing at him from the corner of your eye.
He didn’t deny it.
Instead, he leaned down, resting his cheek on your back as you kneaded. “It’s been three weeks. When are you going to give me that taste?”
You scoffed. “You’d rather have a bite of me than one of my award-winning pastries?”
“You’re the sweetest thing in this bakery. Why would I settle for anything else?”
You rolled your eyes. “You know, for someone who doesn’t eat, you’re always in the kitchen.”
Angelico leaned back slightly, his golden hair brushing your collarbone as he studied you. “I don’t care about food. I care about you.”
There was something hushed in that confession. Something that settled between the rise of your breath and the low hum of the oven.
You glanced back at him.
“Doesn’t it bother you?” you asked quietly. “Being surrounded by so much you can’t have?”
He pressed his forehead against the back of your neck, lips brushing the skin gently. “Not if I’m sitting next to the one thing I can have.”
You paused, fingers stilled in the dough. The kitchen was warm. The air smelled like sugar and promises.
“Angelico…”
He shifted, pulling you into him until your hips were pressed between his legs and he was hugging you tightly, chin on your shoulder.
“I’m not patient, dolcezza, my sweet Little human” he whispered. “But for you? I’ll wait forever.”
You let your hands fall to his knees as he hugged you tighter, almost childishly so.
“I’ll give you a taste one day,” you promised, a smirk on your lips.
“Just one?” he groaned dramatically, nuzzling into your cheek.
“You’ll have to earn more.”
He chuckled, low and content, a sound that rumbled from deep in his chest.
“Oh, I plan to.”

The day started peacefully.
The kitchen was warm, the air fragrant with browned butter and sugar, and you were humming as you piped cream into the center of a tart. Angelico was, as usual, perched behind the counter like a smug cat. Only this time… something was different.
“I want to help,” he said suddenly.
You froze. “Help?”
He looked dead serious, golden eyes fixed on your hands. “It can’t be that hard.”
You blinked. “You want to bake?”
He straightened, chin high, posture noble. “Yes. What’s the worst that could happen?”
You gave it ten minutes.
And you were right.
Flour: Everywhere. On the counter. In his hair. On your apron. Somehow even in the ceiling.
Eggs: Two cracked directly onto the floor. One shattered in his palm. The fourth one he looked at suspiciously before whispering, “How do you even…?”
Mixing: He held the whisk like it had offended his family name. The bowl spun. The batter sloshed. You were wiping the counter and your tears from laughing too hard.
“Why is it… foaming?” Angelico asked, frowning at the disaster in the bowl.
“It’s not supposed to be alive, Angelico.”
He glared at the bubbling mixture, muttering something about cursed tools and alchemical betrayals. And still���still—he insisted on putting it in the oven.
You stood at a safe distance.
The dough ...took a baked form.
Angelico opened the oven with the solemnity of a king unveiling treasure.
What emerged… was not treasure.
It was a deflated, misshapen, vaguely alien-looking pastry. A sad, lumpy thing that slumped onto the tray as if ashamed of itself.
You blinked. “It’s… something.”
Angelico looked devastated.
“…Don’t lie to me.”
You bit your lip.
He groaned dramatically and slumped against the counter, arms crossed like a sulking child. “I’m a disgrace to artistry.”
You chuckled and wiped flour from his cheek before stepping close and gently cupping his face. “You’re not a baker, Angelico. You’re a vampire. An arrogant, drama-prone, chaotic vampire. But…” You leaned in and kissed his nose. “You tried. For me. That makes it the sweetest disaster I’ve ever seen.”
He stared at you for a long beat, then exhaled and pulled you into a warm, floury hug. “You’re never letting me live this down, are you?”
“Absolutely not.”
He sighed dramatically into your neck. “Next time, I seduce you with roses. No baking.”
You grinned. “Deal. But you’re still eating that.”
He looked horrified. “You wouldn’t.”
You slid a fork into his hand. “I would.”
Angelico took one bite, nearly died theatrically on the spot, and then groaned, “Marry me just to save me from this humiliation.”
