A lot of people are intimidated by thinking they don't have the correct cookware. This is flawed.

All you need to cook is bowls, a few basic tools, and like, a heating element. You do not need to be fancy, you do not need and instapot, and as long as you have a stove, you can feed yourself healthy, simple meals.

However, if you have disposable income for some tech, here are some that I recommend that save time, and you don't have to read the weird booklet that comes with it

An airfryer. Though gimmicky, this functions like a faster convention oven. You can also save yourself the headache of dealing with grease but still getting a fairly crispy results for a lot of frozen food, which you'll be dealing with a bit when I get recipes going. This one from Instapot even have recipes specifically made for using it, meaning less searching and more eating

A rice cooker. You can usually cook more than rice in these things and a few come with a steamer basket. Fantastic for set it and forget it.

A crockpot. Also great for set it and forget it. One often thing new cooks tend to do is leave food on the stove and burn it. You cannot burn food in a crockpot unless you make an effort to do so.

A cast iron pan. These are great for meats, but require care to keep functional. If you aren't down with seasoning and correctly up keeping this pan, you probably shouldn't get it.

An immersion blender. Ones that come with a whisk attachment are your friends. Great for people who don't want to dedicate to a large blender or a massive mixer. This one also has a mini food processor, which is INCREDIBLY useful.

Basics For Your Kitchen

Welcome to the first post! I wanted to start with the basics in terms of kitchenware. This list is what I use almost daily when I’m cooking, my must-haves, and my all-time favorite tools. Links with each item.

Cookware

first things first: you need a cast-iron skillet and a dutch oven. I use both on a weekly basis, usually multiple times a week. They’re extremely versatile to have in your kitchen, and with proper care, both will last you a lifetime. 

I bought my cast iron from Walmart, and while some other chefs may gag at the thought, here’s the truth. You don’t need to spend a lot to have quality materials. I paid $15 for my cast iron and it works just as well as one you could spend $50 on. We’ll go into proper care for your cast iron in a later post, but for now, I want to gush a bit about how wonderful they are to cook with. Cast iron is great for those of us living in apartments or anywhere else that bans you from having a grill. Steak, chicken, ribs; if you want the taste of a grill but don’t have one or don’t want to shell out the dough for a countertop grill, use the iron.

Now, onto my ultimate love: my dutch oven. I continue to lust after a Le Creuset, but $400 for a piece of enamel coated cast iron, no matter how perfect, is still out of my price range. So, I did what anyone who impulse buys anything does. I went to Target. I got Chrissy Teigan’s dutch oven, even though I’m not the biggest fan of celebrity cookware lines, desperate times call for desperate measures. And I was pleasantly surprised with how it performs. The base is a little small for my taste, but it gets the job done just fine. Dutch ovens are great for stews, like my personal favorite, buff bourguignon, or dishes that start on the stove and end in the oven, much like or beloved cast iron.

Pots and pans

I, again, went to Walmart for my set of pots and pans because frankly, that’s where I can afford to shop for a lot of basics. I paid $40 for my set and it has served me well. The wonderful teal color is a bit darker from time on the heat (and more than a bit stained from overflowing sauces and dripping oil) but it is still just as beautiful. I went with a set that was completely non-stick, mostly to cut down on cleaning time. The last thing I want to do after spending an hour cooking when I get home from a 10-hour workday is spend another 45 minutes scrubbing the life out of a stainless steel pan. Don’t let the elitists fool you: non-stick works just fine for cooking.

Utensils

Amazon was my savior for affordable and reliable utensils.
