One of the most frustrating misconceptions about Rei's character (and, unfortunately, one of the most common as well) is the idea that he's xenophobic.
To be fair, I can see where it comes from. The "get out of my Japan" line directed at Jodie and Camel does at least sound like something a xenophobe would say. The problem is that the line is taken extremely out of context and blown out of proportion.
Rei is highly patriotic. There's no denying that. He loves Japan more than anything, and he's dedicated his life to protecting it.
Now, consider the fact that Jodie and Camel are part of the FBI, an American law enforcement agency that is more or less running wild around his country when they're not even supposed to be there in the first place.
That's the key here: they're operating illegally in Japan. Rei's disdain toward the FBI isn't specifically about them being American, it's about the fact that they're essentially trampling all over the NPA's jurisdiction.
The fact that Akai is also part of the FBI probably doesn't win them any points either.

Hi :) I haven't posted in a WHILE, but despite that I still get interactions on some detco dogs AU to this day and I've been drawing dogs more and more so.. I've got some new art!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Redesigned Rei as a mix because of his unknown past :) his texts read: "Akita Inu + Sakhalin Husky" , "Rounded trim to blend in & look more Akita than mixed" , "Has a subtle brindle"
As for the FBI trio, Camel is a Great Dane, Akai still a Dobermann, and Jodie Is still a Golden retriever and German shepherd mix! Both Camel and Akai have cropped ears and docked tails due to their job!
I hope to draw more soon but motivation can be hard to come by, so I'm not making any promises

fuuuuuuuuuck just fuck
Kir asking to shoot Camel in the face and Akai's reply just fhsjskskksfj the thoughts that had to fly through his brain at that point and the fact that they gave the line back to Ikeda rather than having it stay as Okiya hits it further home.
Like Akai trust Camel. He thinks Camel has some of the best driving skills. And he also recognizes Camel's guilt for blowing his meeting with Gin and his cover and endangering Akemi. And he's not above using him for it. And here it comes out perfectly.
Here we have Kir who's cover could be blown by Camel being exposed. And he picks Kir who's CIA not FBI over Camel. Even though it's a bet on his part and even though he fully thinks he still can rescue Camel, he picks Kir's safety over Camel.
He has multiple reasons to do so. First Kir is still undercover and he has her partially betraying loyalties and working for him. So part of it is prioritizing any information he can get about the Organization out of her. Another part is she's undercover where he used to be, where he still wishes he could be. He wants his teeth in their flesh and if he can't have it he'll have someone else have it. And to top it all off? Even though he's fine using Camel and trusts Camel and Camel's guilt, he probably still is not happy with him somewhat (bad phrasing but my brain is refusing to feed me the words I want). Camel directly blew his cover, and indirectly killed Akemi. Even if Akai mostly blames himself for Akemi's death the fault in his cover being blown with nothing to show for it is Camel's. He cannot appreciate or like him for that.
So he picks Kir who isn't his own and likely has a slighlty different purpose than Camel who is on his side. He'd sacrifice him before Kir, which I find interesting. Even if he trusts he'll save him in the whatever miniscule percent chance of failure Akai sees in his brain he chooses Kir over him.

DetCo Character Deaths That Would Make the Series Better
Disclaimer: this has nothing to do with how much I like any of these characters, it's just about how their deaths could impact the plot.
With that being said, too many characters are staying alive, so let's start (hypothetically) killing off a few for the plot.
Ran
Shinichi/Conan makes so many decisions that, in his mind, are for Ran's benefit. He thinks that by keeping her in the dark, he's protecting her - which I heavily disagree with, but that's a post for another time - so by killing Ran off anyway, it would drive the narrative that Shinichi isn't infallible and that sometimes, his best effort still won't be enough. Or, perhaps even more tragically, Ran could die because Shinichi kept her in the dark - because he refused to be open with her about the very real danger, and she ended up paying the price for it.
2. Kogoro
Basically for the same reasons as Ran.
3. Camel
Honestly, Camel really should have died in the FBI Serial Murder case simply because it would have made the BO seem like an actual threat for once. Killing off a bunch of random FBI agents that I doubt anyone actually cares about just doesn't have the same impact that killing off someone who's actually relevant to the plot like Camel would. Also, I'm fairly certain that the BO has never actually gotten a win against Akai and Conan, so having their plan to save Camel fail would, again, show that as capable as they are, they're not immune to failing.
I'm also always just down to give Akai even more reasons to feel guilty over his failures, so there's that.
4. Kir
From what we've seen, she's basically Akai's earpiece into everything that's happening within the BO. If Kir were to die, that would leave the FBI without an inside source, which would force them to look elsewhere for intel (*cough* Bourbon *cough*).
Also, girlie has narrowly escaped Gin SO many times, lol. At some point, her luck is bound to run out.
5. "Innocent" characters/any characters who aren't involved with the BO
We've seen before that the BO (particularly Gin) are more than willing to kill bystanders just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Conan himself was almost sniped in the FBI murder case and really only got out of it because Kir managed to divert Gin's attention. Hypothetically, you could have the same thing happen to one of the "innocent" characters - let them get caught in the crossfire somehow, or have them see something they weren't supposed to - and not only would it drive home the point that no one is safe from the BO, but it might also force Conan and his allies to re-evaluate how they're choosing to approach the mission.
