James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg — All Gist (Paradise of Bachelors)

In this third album of guitar duets, James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg perform a complicated sort of dance, their separate instruments executing, light and agile motifs, sometimes in concord, other times slightly out of sync. The melody refracts through their separate interpretations, so that you often feel like you’re hearing it from multiple angles or doubled with an echo. Though some of the songs have a twinge of melancholy, most of them explode with joy. Their two instruments chase each other like dogs at happy play.

Elkington and Salsburg pick up their musical conversation after a long hiatus. Ambsace, their last collaboration, came out in 2015. But like the best reunions, this one is free of awkwardness. They treat each other with warmth and respect throughout. The guitars tangle but never step on one another, each player leaving space for the other.

The pair also makes judicious use of other talent to bolster and deepen their sound. The opener “Death Wishes to Kill” gets a firm grounding from Nick Macri’s acoustic bass; he lends a steadiness to this playful tag in thumps that resonate and mark time without staking too prominent a place for themselves in the sonic mix. But even more striking is the wild skirl of violin that Wanees Zarour adds, wheeling around the guitar line in a throaty emotional timbre. Zarour played on the last Elkington/Salsburg disc. He is a Palestinian-American multi-instrumentalist and academic who teaches at the University of Chicago.

“Nicest Distinction” shows how the foundation that Elkington and Salsburg lay down can be opened up and expanded.  It begins in stately ritual, a madrigal with a little blues introduced in the way the phrases end with a vibrating bent notes.  It’s just the two of them for a good long while, one strumming splayed chords, the other picking a melodic path in and among the meditations. Yet this long piece kicks into a gallop towards the end, with wild tom-tom fill and woodwinds played by Wednesday Knudsen.

All Gist will likely be lumped into the folk category, being acoustic and not quite modern. Still there is really only one actual folk tune on it, the mortality-shaded frolic of “Rule Bretagne,” based, per the title, on the music of seagoing France. Well, maybe not. “Explanation Point” digs pretty deep into country blues, the notes sliding and tumbling down a sunlight rambling path. Here, as elsewhere, melodic lines zing off each other then carom back for a moment of concord.

But really, the most interesting cuts veer the furthest from conventional folk. “Well, Well Cornelius,” originally written for piano by the British composer Howard Skelton, offers a radiant procession of chords framed by the regular architecture of picking. It is serene and unhurried and really quite beautiful. So, is “Buffalo Stance” a Neneh Cherry song you might remember for its pop-locking hip hop beat and strobe lit video. These artists distill it down to melody—a tune you might not have focused on the original, very different version—and transform the cut into a gentle, bucolic ramble. Ironically, in the video, Neneh introduces her song with an aside of “how melodic” which feels like sarcasm, but these two guitarists heard it there all along. Just lovely.

28/03/2022-Day off of birds, butterflies, flowers and more at Lakeside and home: Blog 1 of 2-The morning

I had my first negative test after catching Covid last night, so was able to have a couple of walks on my day off today which brought to an end a patch of annual leave creating a five day weekend. Whilst it was nice to really connect to the garden, balcony and views from my room the last few days and allow me to stock up nicely on bird, flower, plant and view photos within them whilst allowing me to really relax in lots of different ways and cover a lot of things to do, it was really good to be back out and I was hoping I could get a walk into the time off at least. 

It gave me a chance to follow a bit of an idea I had for if we had have been Covid free and used the long weekend to visit other locations, have a morning trip to Lakeside that was a bit more focused and specific than a working from home lunch time walk to spend a bit more time with the courting Great Crested Grebes. I enjoyed doing just that getting some brilliant views of the pair particularly on Concorde lake but beach lake too the latter I took photos of a week ago, it felt amazing to get smashing views of them and really make out their elegance and wonder as they swam around the lake. It was nice to hear some squwarky calls from them and see them connected to each other, watching each other as they swam and doing the looking at each other and going close to each other that is the beginnings of the courtship dance a little. This presented some good photo opportunities. Overall I found myself so happy to just be out in the fresh air captivated by these birds and really enjoying viewing them.

In the warm temperatures of the morning that it was good to make the most of, with the sun shining brightly, everything noticeably that much greener the delicious light shade of the hopeful spring time colour which I am always amazed at around this time of year, with Wren and Chiffchaff calling away among other beautiful bird calls I found a haven of peace and calm outdoors which I had craved. It was like I was never away as I enjoyed walking and being outdoors here. I took the third, fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth pictures in this photoset of green and pleasant views here this morning.

There was a strong supporting cast of birds to the grebes this morning, most notably a melodious warbler which I enjoyed seeing in the sunshine on trees north of Kornwestheim lake as I walked around the lakes a couple of times. It wasn’t easy confirming it whilst there with the angle in which it was sitting and singing but the stunning song and lighting up some photos I took of it when home confirmed a great hope of mine, it was a beautiful Blackcap. A springtime bird I had on my mind as a target for Lakeside lately, and I’d seen it. My first of the year to take my year list to 141, and its my earliest ever spring sighting of one and second earliest ever in a year. That so as the earliest I ever saw one in a year was 2020 in January with a female seen beside the river Itchen in Winchester, they are resident birds these days too. But today’s male with its almost paint dipped black head was in the spring time and singing away making it more of a spring time sighting. It was a beautiful sight and brilliant to make it the second year running I first saw this key spring time species here. This is the highest amount of birds I have ever ended March on for my year list which I am so pleased with. I took the tenth picture in this photoset of the Blackcap. 

I saw fellow warbler Chiffchaff too and views of Great Spotted Woodpecker and Sparrowhawk high over Concorde lake were true highlights. A Blue Tit flitting around in the blossom which still present helped the forsythia hedge out the front in yellow and green and general greenery make the walk alive with colour was a stunning spring time image to watch. The Canada Geese particularly looked territorial across the lakes with the Greylag Geese a strong presence at the country park again I took the eighth picture in this photoset of one. I got a cracking view of one calling Wren west of the lakes too which was a special moment again lately with the species. I also took the first picture in this photoset of a Collared Dove out the back before leaving the house today, second of a beautiful Blackbird at Lakeside and sixth of a female Mallard one of a few intimate views I got of Mallards of both sexes today. I took a photo of a Robin which I tweeted too and I think it could be the first time or one of the first times I recall taking pictures of both Blackbird and Robin in a day which is notable.

On the way back I walked outside of the country park on the green area north of it which I hadn’t done for a while and I was glad I made the last minute decision to as I saw a little butterfly in the air then saw it land. It was the thrilling sight of a intricately marked and beautiful Speckled Wood. My first seen this year to keep my butterfly year list soaring at seven. This is my second earliest sighting of one in a year ever, second only to my joint earliest of 24th March in 2012 and 2019 to also be only my third ever March sighting of this species which speaks volumes about where we are in terms of the butterfly season being a bit further ahead now after this run of weather. I certainly didn’t know I’d get a tick for any of my lists this long weekend with me effectively isolating for most of it and after the calibre of the weekend before that was fine but it feels amazing to have snuck two crucial spring time ones in for my bird and butterfly year list.

There were some great flower sightings on my morning walk; cowslips starting to cover the bank in the south west of the site, lesser celandine on the path which I enjoyed seeing again, daffodils and clumps of groundsel, daisies and red deadnettle out the front with daisies all over and possible bittercress at Lakeside too. The camellia in the front garden and other flowers look amazing now I’ve not seen them for a few days with them well in flower with bits of greenery looking nice on the lavender and berries now with dandelions looking nice in the front garden as they do in the back and all over now. The periwinkles in the flower bed looking nice at Lakeside too again.

BOOK REVIEW: RICHARD JAMES SAVILE ROW

As Troy McClure said about playing the human in a musical adaptation of Planet of the Apes, reviewing this book is “the role I was born to play!”

Simply entitled Richard James: Savile Row, this book commemorates the 25th anniversary in Savile Row of the fashion house and tailors of the same name.  A read is somewhat disappointing, full of short essays by what amounts to a rather incestuous school of longtime Richard James fans in British media and entertainment, among them British GQ’s Dylan Jones and Richard’s most notorious client, Elton John.

Elton’s known as a voracious devotee – to not say addict – of his favorite outfitters over the decades, buying out entire shopfloors at times.  His twenty-year devotion to Richard James is a key to understanding Richard James’ enormous if unrecognized positive influence on contemporary men’s clothing and British tailoring. Forty years ago Elton dressed head-to-toe in psychedelic Tommy Nutter, switching in the 1980s to over-the-top Gianni Versace glitz.  Since the end of the 1990s, he’s evangelized Richard James.

Tommy Nutter, the last tailor-designer in Savile Row, dominated British men’s tailoring in the 1970s.  Custom tailoring took a back seat to the cult of the ready-to-wear designer, mostly the Continentals: Pierre Cardin, then Armani and Versace.  Nutter had a few isolated 1980s hits, like dressing the Joker in 1989’s Batman, before dying in 1992.

What had become of the British? 1980s attitudes towards luxury and clothing meant regression, selling an image of Britain as Raj, pith helmets, and gin among palm trees, not progress. Ralph Lauren did a much better job selling that ethos in his more expensive lines than any of the British could.  Some tried; those of us of a certain age (me) remember seeing cashmere sweaters made in China sold in Bloomingdales under the label of Savile Row tailor Gieves & Hawkes, or blocky ready-to-wear suits at Barneys sold with the name of Savile Row tailor Kilgour, French & Stanbury, although made in Canada by Samuelson.  An ersatz Britishness for export markets, an ersatz image and look created by ready-to-wear licensees with little input from the British tailors desperately trying to sell their names abroad.

Into this breach came Richard James. Like Nutter, James is categorically not a trained tailor.  What he is, though, is an inspired designer who, since opening on Savile Row, has offered true custom tailoring as well as ready-to-wear in visionary designs.  I remember the first Richard James items I noticed, beautiful belts and wallets of gorgeous quality hand stitched in England with contrasting linings in deeply saturated color.  I still have one of those belts, in all its magnificence.  What did they have to do with British custom tailoring?  Nothing – and everything. For the first time a Savile Row name appeared to be doing something relevant, interesting and elegant – and doing it to the fullest extent and the last detail. Savile Row survives by its export markets and by the reputation its tailors have forged for beautiful items of a certain Britishness.  No more uninspired licensed items that has as much to do with British elegance as a Sterling car (derided by Consumer Reports for “Industrial Revolution-era” English technology, remember those?). What Richard James has done is modernize British elegance from the creepy colonial-obsessed ethos that today only blinkered Brexiteer bluestockings and Internet edgelords cling to.  Even the past James references uses other, more inspired touchstones of British greatness, including his bespoke offer (initially serviced by the Savile Row tailors Anthony J. Hewitt and James Levett before being brought in-house), but also ready-to-wear shirts in stripes that recalled the best of Swinging London; handmade ties whose lush, delicate patterns rivalled the best of midcentury Sulka or today’s Charvet; magnificently, decadently warm alpaca pile ‘teddy bear” coats originally created for 1920s motorists; astonishingly soft leather or suede jackets in the café racer style 1960s London Mods would have died for; and even the made-to-order cashmere socks with custom monograms Corgi used to make for defunct shops of yesteryear like the custom shirtmaker Beale & Inman.  It was a vision of Britishness far, far from Lauren’s fantasies, a Britishness that admitted the turmoil of Ted Heath’s premiership, that added much-needed glamor after John Major’s greyness.  And James reminded us what was wonderful about the British suit by invoking all that was dashing in its cut.  Ready-to-wear suits were made in beautiful cloths from British mills like the impeccable Taylor & Lodge, in unexpectedly evocative colors and patterns: sharp mohair sharkskin, gorgeously patterned real Scottish or Irish tweeds or a French navy that was lighter than the normal shade; even rainbow chalkstripes on a sober dark ground.  The cut was always tapered at the waist, double-vented, slant pocketed in the “hacking” style, a look espoused by Patrick Macnee’s subversively too-British John Steed in the 1960s.  Richard’s linings were often boldly colorful, to remind us what could be playful about the suit, everything that 1980s pretention (clinging to all the trimmings of colonial oppression) had repressed.

Richard James the book shines in cataloguing those designs in beautiful detail.  James really has been the best colorist in the business, as Jones termed him.  Even more importantly, this book also shows how James has aced the tricky game of tennis without a net of innovating within the classic: in addition to recreating ruffle-fronted tuxedo shirts like those of George Lazenby’s louche Bond in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, James also invented tuxedo shirts whose fronts (instead of pleats or stiff waffle-weave Marcella) were hand-beaded by Hand & Lock, beaders and embroiderers to Her Majesty the Queen; Corgi (knitters and hosiers to the Prince of Wales) knitted thick, thick cashmere sweaters with hand-inlaid abstract intarsia designs; elegant cufflinks (always double-sided) recalled childhood marbles in the forms of hand-blown translucent glass or semiprecious banded agate (a real “Aggie”) or amber set in sterling silver; and even a travel bag that recalled the bags given away by Pan Am or Concorde in the early days of jet travel was rendered in ballistic nylon with reflective silver piping and brilliantly contrasting linings.

I’ve never owned a Richard James bespoke suit.  I know that his ready-to-wear suits were disappointingly half-canvassed or fused, despite their wonderful materials.  But they helped remind me that Savile Row could still be relevant, and that those tailors, despite past reputation, could be approachable and contemporary – and that has been my experience with the other tailors of Savile Row, including the impeccable, evocatively named Steed, whom I loved for their name before ever using them.

Every item with the Richard James name carried and carries the same visionary, whimsical design philosophy, a Britishness less fanciful and more romantic than Paul Smith’s, and far less caricatural and cynical than those of Ralph Lauren or Hackett.  Socks, always made to a high-standard by Pantherella, are accented in amusing contrast colors or mad patterns. I have a number that are doing fine almost 20 years later.  My Richard James Concorde bag has been a beloved, perfect gym bag for years, while his larger, tougher Japanese denim bag (trimmed in the best British bridle hide) is my go-to travel holdall no matter where on Earth I go. My beaded Richard James tux shirt is a prized piece of design genius, as is a magnificently waterproof raincoat made for him by Mackintosh in a beige twill that cunningly iridesces turquoise or orange from certain angles. For years I’ve searched for the same shade of gorgeous Thomas Mason turquoise twill cotton that an old Richard James shirt is in, but most of his materials are specially made for his designs; even the fine-gauge cotton knits that John Smedley or Peter Geeson created for him seemed to be in special colors and to his own patterns.

That wealth, that treasury of a vision and genius, tumbles out of Richard James’ new book, pictures that really are worth thousands of words and that speak for themselves about the importance of this designer’s contribution, reminding us that Savile Row, indeed British menswear itself, still had things of wonder to offer us.

Poe attempts to explain his classic "Cask of Amontillado" to a group of famous writers who aren't impressed, in a story by Devin Grayson with art by Chris Giarrusso and Richard Williams.    Okay this is going to be your new favourite obsession trust me, if you’ve ever been a fan of cereal and the characters who represent them then you MUST own this book and series.  The first feature alone is worth 100 X its weight in gold or at the very least in sugar.  I think the way that Mark wrote this is beyond a shadow of a doubt a highlight of storytelling for me.  To see the main characters and then those around the breakfast table being utilised is sensational, though I wish we met the Captain (of the crunch of course) and there are some beautiful unnamed characters that are somewhat easily identified and I have to say the whole damn thing is bloody genius.    I adore the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented perfectly.  How we are introduced to the characters is beautifully done and this ties directly into the character development that we see.  How they interact with one another and the dialogue and back and forth banter is so delightfully written.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way it’s an absolute delight.    The interiors here are fantastic!  I love the linework and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to bring out such lovely detail work.  The characters, their faces, facial expressions and even their hands are so human then the playing cards are awesome with whom they represent.  There aren’t a ton of backgrounds in play here but then with the way the panels are filled and the focus of the story that’s okay.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The colour work as well is very nicely rendered.  The various hues and tones we see within the colours utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is lovely.    Oh the second story does feature Poe and his adventures and this time the extremely talented Devin Grayson gets to play in this sandbox.  The entire story is so incredibly well written that’s almost scary.  Picture it Concord, Summer of 1846 as a group of friends sit around the dinner table talking.  The laugh, poke fun and generally drink have a good time in each other’s company.  Okay my Sophia impression aside it really is the kind of dialogue that you would expect from those assembled and it really captures the imagination of the reader incredibly well.    How we see the story & plot development through how the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information is expertly done.  This is a dinner party and a story is being told and it is so damn engaging that the reader alongside those listening around the table get their chance to interject themselves in that story.  I cannot get over just how damn good the writing is here and how in my mind, how accurately the personalities match up.      The interiors for the second story are mindbogglingly brilliantly rendered!  I meant he black and white style suits this to a “T” and it’s just composed so incredibly well.  Aside from the likenesses being superb the story within the story is one that captivates the reader and transports them to another age.  The judicious use of backgrounds is damn near perfectly done.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling.  The linework and it’s varying weights and techniques that we see really are beyond brilliantly utilised because what we see here is something I wish we’d see in many more comics. ​    Rob does an amazing job lettering the stories and bringing a different flair to each one and should be recognised for that.  The imagined accents through script choice really makes a difference when the reader thinks they understand in their mind how it should be heard.  This is why comics were invented.  Two incredible stories here that are as different as night and day and yet still find a way to feel connected and separate in every sense.

10th August 2021: Sunny day at home and Lakeside 

On a more consistently sunny day today I enjoyed taking in my surroundings out of my bedroom window with all the bright green leaves and splashes of colour from various plants looking gorgeous. I took the first and second pictures in this photoset of a view looking over neighbouring gardens out the back and a cloud scene. I also got the fourth and fifth pictures in this photoset of the garden with one of the sunflowers about to come out I imagine that has stood for a while and its shadow in the sunshine with the fuchsia looking nice and some lavender I’m used to seeing out the front but had not noticed out the back before and another new one for me in the garden gladiolus which looks great and nicely pink. 

It was a brilliant day of butterflies in the garden too, with both Small and Large White enjoying the buddleia at the back of the garden by the gate after seeing so many of the Small Whites and so well during the recent Big Butterfly Count including at home it was great to take in a prominent Large White well I got some good views of it today I took the third picture in this photoset of it. A Holly Blue flitted into the garden and out again which was a delight. I always love seeing butterflies in the garden as its slightly rarer than birds coming in for us.

I also had an interesting moment when I believe I saw the Sparrowhawk we saw in the garden on Saturday hovering and swooping into the garden as I worked but when I got to the window it was nowhere to be seen and a House Sparrow was about like nothing had happened. So I am going to go away saying it was the Sparrowhawk angling in looking as though it would come into the garden but it didn’t quite. 

At lunch time my Dad who I don’t live with joined me for a walk something we try to do monthly whilst I’m working from home still. A very pleasant walk again and ragwort and some leaves on a tree out the front on the turn to autumnal which I knew I’d probably see a bit more of this month made it a yellow start to the walk, my Dad’s favourite colour interestingly. We reached beach lake and as hoped as something my Dad does appreciate the whole area looking stunning with the landscape painted in the rich green of the leaves on trees really a divine shade currently and the water sparkling. I took the sixth and eighth pictures in this photoset of beach lake and Kornwestheim lake today. At beach lake a Black-tailed Skimmer flitting around the shore I’ve had a great year for this at this bit and House Martins skimming the lake which I want to make the most of lately as their season will soon be nearing its end I’ve had another brilliant year of them immediately locally and elsewhere. A Lesser Black-backed Gull on a buoy made a charming sight and having my bridge camera with me today alongside my DSLR and normal lens an unusual pairing for me I took a rare chance to get a zoom in photo of the gull with my bridge camera the seventh picture in this photoset one I took of this beautiful bird in the sun. With it preening it was reminiscent of Common Gull pictures I got with my bridge camera doing this last winter here. I got quite close and special views of a Great Crested Grebe in the north west corner of Concorde lake which we looped around to the west on the walk one of the longer routes I’ve done lately which felt great. The Great Crested Grebe was a brown beacon of glory shining out a great intimate view of this bird and I took the ninth picture in this photoset of it with my bridge camera once more. 

Some reed type plants that had grown up and more stunning green views along the northern path both within it sort of and panmoramic views over the country park awaited us along the northern path, as well as some smashing thistle with some gone to a clock as the tenth and final picture in this photoset shows. With the afternoon sun re-emerging after some cloud coming over it came to caress the scenes out the back once more like the tree visible from my room at the back of the scene. And it was a top evening of sky scenes again with one I was pleased to get a picture of towards the end which I tweeted on Dans_Pictures.

Built in the early 1980s, it looks like a spaceship from the cosmic age of the 1960s that landed too late. Nevertheless, its architectural expressiveness has no comparison in central Africa.

The building's French archi­tect, Armand Salomon, arrived in Cameroon for the first time in around 1956, when the country was still under French rule. He was the first foreigner to­ be a licensed archi­tect in Cameroon.

The complex also includes a sports hall, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a conference centre, offices, and hotels. It was built in a framework of the bilateral cooperation between the Republic of the Congo and China by the China State Construction and Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).

It is always surprising to see where China is erecting new large-scale buildings for African governments. Beijing's stadium diplomacy has a long tradition. After all, China also built a stadium along the Congo river embankment in the sixties across the river in Kinshasa.
