During the last week of 2022, my coworker introduced me to his new obsession, “Bocchi the Rock”. He described it as “K-On but Gen-Z” and that he really liked the storyline, so much so that he was watching it when he should’ve been studying for finals. Anyways, during that week, I remember he came into my office with this big grin on his face. I asked him why he was smirking and he said that he was amazed that “Bocchi the Rock” surpassed “Chainsaw Man” in terms of show rankings.

As someone who’s not into either series, it is surprising to hear that this is happening. I thought that “Fight Scenes + Great Animation + Attractive Waifus” was typically the winning anime formula, but I guess not in this case? My coworker did say that CSM was hurt by its usage of CGI, but that seems a bit harsh to punish the show because of it. Maybe we’re in the era of slice-of-life/comedy, I mean, two of the biggest series in recent years are “Kaguya-Sama” and “Spy x Family”. Maybe the shonen battle genre is just getting stale.

Side note, I was REALLY surprised to learn that “Bocchi” is seinen. And that discovery led me down the rabbit hole of learning that “Spy x Family” is shonen and “Kaguya-Sama” is seinen. That seems…backwards. CSM being shonen was also weird. But hey, maybe this is just my perspective on things, maybe the distributor saw something else.
