I’ve recently read Ann Quin’s Three and Susan Taubes’s Divorcing—two absolutely brutal experimental novels by 20th-century “metabolizers of misogyny” who committed suicide (to borrow a phrase a reader once used to describe Alejandra Pizarnik and Amelia Rosselli). You will often hear hackneyed literary critics and intellectual blowhards utter platitudes like “experimentation with the novel as a form ended with Proust” (swap Proust with Joyce—same sentiment). These books lay bare the vacuousness of such claims, for there was no shortage of experimentation with form during the postwar period. It’s just that books like Three and Divorcing passed quickly into oblivion and found no readership after their suicides. Of course there’s a double standard at play here: experimentation by men is a mark of genius, whereas with women it represents incoherence or incapacity—an inability to deal straightforwardly with plot, character, setting, etc, rather than a conscious rejection of those formal conventions.

Perhaps one day I will teach a class on water suicides as a kind of sequel to my Water and the Imagination class…

i've been reading three by ann quin and it's horribly enticing, i hate to call it "unconventional" or "experimental" because those words smack of so much disregard/lowering of status, but regardless it is written unconventionally.

this isn't a full review but it is fascinating to see this married couple under such scrutiny from the words while at the same time using mostly dialogue and little descriptor of emotion. gathering that they are just not working out and they know it but refuse to say it whilst puzzling over the disappearance/possible death/suicide of the third person that occupied a room in their house (lover? to both? but i can't say they were in love...the class divide was too great...but it's complex, you see).

the glaring spotlight on the problems with the sex life is also refreshing as hell, and as the pieces of the puzzle come together it just gets more and more heartwrenching the more you see this couple go about their daily lives almost but not quite tripping the wire but the inches are getting thinner all the time.

it's hard to talk about it? each sentence is so dense. i suppose i'm just greatly enjoying this unapologetic look into human beings where it feels like if there's any judgment at all it's coming from me and not quite led on from the book...although.......

ps; reading this is like reading a faithful adaptation of pink floyd's the wall but set only to literary text. dense and at times confusing but worth it

ive said this b4 but a few years ago when i was designing her i was having a bit of trouble w/her face. it was off and i couldnt figure out why. and then while doodling i thought, "hm she's got some frisk undertale elements what if i gave her their eyes" and immediately i loved it. she also has the old skintone i used ta draw frisk with :]

tbh they ended up looking so similar i changed the way i drew frisk considerably so they weren't EXACTLY the same hgfhgfjgh

anyway here's both of them w/their eyes open

she follows that fandom frisk trope of them opening their eyes in certain situations. such as when they're surprised, scared, excited, etc.

also, her middle name is ann :]

Blog about some books acquired, other stuff

My family and I took our Florida asses to the West Coast for a wonderful week earlier this month. 1: favorite book of all time?

AUGHHHHHH WHYYYYYYYYY?!???! Ahhh… it’s got to be… UM… THE INQUISITORS TALE BY ADAM GIDWITZ!!!!! Man. One of the most beautiful books I’ve ever had the fortune of reading. It’s a fictional tale of medieval France and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Literally one of the prettiest books I own because it’s ILLUMINATED!!! Like old scripts done by medieval monks! But instead of monks, it’s Hatem Aly, and he does a truly lovely job of enhancing the book with his illustrations. God. I think about this book all the time ok I used to read it once a month that’s how enchanting it is. I’ll never shut up about it and I’ll never stop loving it.

Also A Little Princess by Frances Hodgeson Burnett bc that book basically raised me <333

2: favorite book at the moment?

ooooh idk… I’ll say The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo for now bc it’s got so many beautiful stories and it’s also one of the prettiest books I own… it’s kind of a twisted fairytale anthology of sorts, remixing a little mermaid, beauty and the beast, the nutcracker + the velveteen rabbit, Hansel and Gretel, and also putting a twist on classic tropes and it’s LOVELYYYY (it’s also set in the Grishaverse so uh. check it out if yiu ever have the time <33)

3: most recent book added to your favorites?

AHHH!! I went to the library recently so I got to find new books and oughhh I have really good taste based off of covers apparently. It’s called Junior High and it’s by twins Tegan and Sara Quin, and it’s another middle-grade graphic novel! It’s a memoir of sorts about Tegan and Sara’s 7th grade year, and it’s illustrated by Tillie Walden (I LOVE TILLIE WALDEN SO MUCH AUGHHHHH) and it’s a really really cute coming-of-age book!! I cried 👍✨

4: a few books you’d recommend?

HAHAHAAA MY TIME HAS COME! look them up yourself bc I haven’t the time to go in detail about them all but trust me that they’re good books and don’t judge them off the cover only ☺️ Also I’m rating them out of 10 so you know how I feel about them!
