Books, May - June 2021
Tess of the Road - Rachel Hartman [dnf]
A River of Stars - Vanessa Hua
The Sealed Letter - Emma Donoghue
Giant Bones - Peter S. Beagle
Moominsummer Madness - Tove Jansson *
The Beacon at Alexandria - Gillian Bradshaw *
The Phantom Tollbooth - Norton Juster *
Libertie - Kaitlyn Greenidge
Stay - Nicola Griffith
Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age - Annalee Newitz [Thoroughly enjoyable, but also the sort of pop archaeology book where things like this happen repeatedly, and I’m sorry, but I laughed: “And then, as if by magic, the eminent University of Cambridge archaeologist Andrew Wallace-Hadrill appeared.” (As far as the narrative admits, they did not have an appointment; while they were wandering around Pompeii, collecting information about his speciality, he was wandering around Pompeii, happy to be encountered and become a source.)]
Teach Me - Olivia Dade
The Address Book: What Street Addresses Reveal About Identity, Race, Wealth, and Power - Deirdre Mask
We Are Watching Eliza Bright - A.E. Osworth [“I am not going to read the gamergate novel,” I said, “and especially not when it’s using 1st person plural MFA POV half of the time,” but then I voyeuristically devoured the gamergate novel which is, really, its point: “We are obsessed with what goes on where we can’t see it.”] *
Ivory Apples - Lisa Goldstein [what the hell?!? no.]
The Future of Another Timeline - Annalee Newitz
The Scarlet Seed - Edith Pargeter [the scenes that made me cry as a child still make me cry now, and that’s rather nice]
The Perilous Life of Jade Yeo - Zen Cho [Five books later, I’m prepared to admit that Zen Cho and I aligned for one glorious novel and some related characters (Sorcerer to the Crown; Rollo & Aunt Georgiana), and I’m mostly indifferent to everything else, but I keep trying because there’s always a sentence like this: “Being good-looking and interesting and having the heavy-lidded gaze of a romantic tapir does not excuse writing a foolish book.”]
Elementals - A. S. Byatt
Searching for Black Confederates: The Civil War’s Most Persistent Myth - Kevin M. Levin
What Katy Did Next - Susan Coolidge
Feed the Resistance: Recipes + Ideas for Getting Involved - Julia Turshen et al.
A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby - Vanessa Riley [dnf]
The Sibyl in Her Grave - Sarah Caudwell
Sabriel - Garth Nix *
Outcrossing - Celia Lake [dnf]
Mending Matters: Stitch, Patch, and Repair Your Favorite Denim & More - Katrina Rodabaugh [so I feel like this was a couple of blog posts inflated into a book]
Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake - Alexis Hall [extremely funny, made me want to bake during a heat wave, likely to suffer in reviews from mismatched genre expectations: it’s romantic comedy, not romance (I’ve just looked and yep! this is a major complaint)] *
Tales from Moominvalley - Tove Jansson
Goblin Fruit - Celia Lake [dnf]
Coffee Boy - Austin Chant [trying to do more than its length and thin characterization can carry, but also heartening in the main character’s explicit refusal to embody a limited and patronizing narrative of marginalized suffering; I wouldn’t want every trans romance to do this so overtly, just as I don’t want every queer romance to be about overcoming homophobia, but I want a few of them to (fair also to note that in contemporary settings, I find boss/intern scenarios really unappealing, and no, I don’t care if they talk about it; had it been longer I would almost certainly have bailed)]
Uncanny Valley - Anna Wiener [didn’t really plan to read this; definitely didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did - I thought it would be just another new adult navel-gazing indictment of tech bros, and it is, but it’s got seriously good style to go with it] *
Lord John and the Private Matter - Diana Gabaldon
Behind Closed Doors: At Home in Georgian England - Amanda Vickery
On Juneteenth - Annette Gordon-Reed
Salt Magic, Skin Magic - Lee Welch
Lord John and the Hand of Devils - Diana Gabaldon [read the first two novellas, but my tolerance for Diana Gabaldon’s Diana-Gabaldon-ness is relatively low and the second novel wore it out; dnf]
Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade - Diana Gabaldon
A Seditious Affair - KJ Charles [because once you’re 75+ comments into an increasingly-involved modern AU, the only reasonable thing to do is give in (looking back at the innocence of this mid-June annotation...oh, you sweet summer child)] *
Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America 1619-2019 - edited by Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blain [in the end, I’m not sure the organizing principles of 5 year chunks and short word counts really allow enough scope for many of the essays, but look for this to show up on Most Challenged lists and as a target of reactionary legislation anyway]
A Gentleman’s Position - KJ Charles [see prev. entry in series]
The Secret Adversary - Agatha Christie [sometimes you should not reread your childhood books]
Fire Watch - Connie Willis
The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh - KJ Charles [possibly shouldn’t be an entry, but what the heck, it’s sold separately; see prev. entry in series]
The City of Brass - S. A. Chakraborty
American Quilts: The Democratic Art - Robert Shaw [that subtitle tells you exactly what to expect from the text, but the quilts are lovely]
Engaging Diverse Communities: A Guide to Museum Public Relations - Melissa A. Johnson
Strange the Dreamer - Laini Taylor [dnf]

The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Les Misérables - Duisburg - 1996 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Jerzy Jeszke (Jean Valjean), Hardy Rudolz (Javert), Cornelia Drese (Fantine), Deborah Dutcher (Cosette), Felix Martin (Marius), Sanni Luis (Éponine), Martin Berger (Enjolras), Tom Zahner (Thénardier), Anne Welte (Madame Thénardier), Willi Welp (The Bishop) Les Misérables - Dutch Revival - Spring, 2008 FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: René van Kooten (Jean Valjean), Wim van den Driessche (Javert), Nurlaila Karim (Fantine), Suzan Seegers (Cosette), Jamai Loman (Marius), Céline Purcell (Éponine), Freek Bartels (Enjolras), Gerben Grimmius (u/s Thénardier), Marjolein Algera (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Complete show, Amateur capture A, Double dvd Les Misérables - Fifth National Tour - October 5, 2018 (hitmewithyourbethshot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Nick Cartell (Jean Valjean), Josh Davis (Javert), Mary Kate Moore (Fantine), Jillian Butler (Cosette), Joshua Grosso (Marius), Paige Smallwood (Éponine), Matt Shingledecker (Enjolras), J Anthony Crane (Thénardier), Allison Guinn (Madame Thénardier), Sam Middleton (Gavroche), Cate Elefante (u/s Little Cosette), Matt Moisey (Grantaire), Monte J Howell (Combeferre), Tim Quartier (s/w Feuilly), Christopher Viljoen (Courfeyrac), Patrick Rooney (Jean Prouvaire), Gabriel Sidney Brown (Joly), Andrew Maughan (Lesgles), Felipe Barbosa Bombonato (Babet), John Ambrosino (Claquesous), Steve Czarnecki (Factory Foreman), Ashley Dawn Mortensen (Factory Girl), John Ambrosino (Bamatabois) Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - November 11, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Victor Hawks (u/s Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Aaron Lazar (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche), Drew Sarich (Grantaire) NOTES: A nice capture here of Victor as Valjean. The capture is a little on the dark side, but still enjoyable. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - February 17, 2007 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Drew Sarich (u/s Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche) NOTES: A really nice video of the first broadway revival. Widescreen. Cleaned up nicely in remastering. And it has Sarich. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - May 12, 2007 (Matinee) (jstarz's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Drew Sarich (u/s Javert), Lea Salonga (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Mandy Bruno (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Ann Harada (Madame Thénardier), Stephen Trafton (u/s Grantaire) NOTES: Filmed in widescreen (though encoded in 4:3, so there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen), this is a nice capture of some of the new cast members. Drew and Ann give great performances in their roles. The second disc also includes the first 15 minutes of the February 24, 2007 Evening show, filmed from the rear right orchestra. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - June 1, 2007 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Ben Davis (Javert), Lea Salonga (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Marissa McGowan (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Ann Harada (Madame Thénardier) Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - August 24, 2007 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Drew Sarich (Jean Valjean), Robert Hunt (Javert), Nikki Renée Daniels (u/s Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Megan McGinnis (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Chip Zien (Thénardier), Becca Ayers (u/s Madame Thénardier), Brian D'Addario (Gavroche) NOTES: Some nice closeups/mediums. A nice capture of the new cast. Capture can be dark at times, but mostly in the darker scenes. Includes a technical difficulty when the Barricades first come out, the show is stopped and includes the announcement.. A- Les Misérables - Fourth UK & Ireland Tour - January, 2019 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Killian Donnelly (Jean Valjean), Nic Greenshields (Javert), Katie Hall (Fantine), Bronwen Hanson (Cosette), Harry Apps (Marius), Tegan Bannister (Éponine), Will Richardson (Enjolras), Martin Ball (Thénardier), Sophie-Louise Dann (Madame Thénardier) Les Misérables - Hollywood Bowl - August 9, 2008 FORMAT:  WMV (HD) CAST: J Mark McVey (Jean Valjean), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Javert), Melora Hardin (Fantine), Michele Maika (Cosette), John Lloyd Young (Marius), Lea Michele (Éponine), Tom Lowe (Enjolras), Sage Ryan (Gavroche) NOTES: J. Mark McVey, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lea Michele, Melora Hardin, John Lloyd Young, Michele Maika, Michael McCormick, Tom Lowe, Ruth Williamson. Juni's master filmed in widescreen and can be a little shakey at times in tight zooms. Nice to see the audience version compared to the Proshot one. A- Les Misérables - Japan - 1997

Les Misérables - Paris - 1991 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Robert Marien (Jean Valjean), Patrick Rocca (Javert), Marie Zamora (Cosette), Jérôme Pradon (Marius), Stéphanie Martin (Éponine), Julien Combey (Enjolras), Laurent Gendron (Thénardier), Marie-France Roussel (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Act 1 + finale of act 2. This is 100% NOT Louise Pitre playing Fantine Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - March 1, 2014 (Preview) (Highlights) (where is your red schaaaf's master) FORMAT:  MOV (HD) CAST: Ramin Karimloo (Jean Valjean), Will Swenson (Javert), Caissie Levy (Fantine), Samantha Hill (Cosette), Andy Mientus (Marius), Nikki M James (Éponine), Kyle Scatliffe (Enjolras), Cliff Saunders (Thénardier), Keala Settle (Madame Thénardier), Gaten Matarazzo (Gavroche) NOTES: First preview. It includes most of the show. Loud excited audience. Blind shot from stage right third row, with no zooms. Keala Settle sprained her ankle at some point between The Robbery and One Day More, resulting in her not being in One Day More and using a cane during Wedding Chorale/Beggars at the Feast. Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - March 8, 2014 (Preview) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Ramin Karimloo (Jean Valjean), Will Swenson (Javert), Caissie Levy (Fantine), Samantha Hill (Cosette), Andy Mientus (Marius), Nikki M James (Éponine), Kyle Scatliffe (Enjolras), Cliff Saunders (Thénardier), Keala Settle (Madame Thénardier), Joshua Colley (Gavroche) NOTES: Audience was full of excitement! The last 20 seconds are missing from the very end due to battery issues Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - August 21, 2014 (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Nathaniel Hackmann (u/s Jean Valjean), Earl Carpenter (Javert), Caissie Levy (Fantine), Samantha Hill (Cosette), Andy Mientus (Marius), Nikki M James (Éponine), Kyle Scatliffe (Enjolras), Cliff Saunders (Thénardier), Keala Settle (Madame Thénardier), Joshua Colley (Gavroche), Mia Sinclair Jenness (Little Cosette), Angeli Negron (Young Éponine), Adam Monley (The Bishop) NOTES: A fantastic capture of this lavish production. It’s refreshing to see different faces in the lead roles, and both Nathaniel and Earl carry the show well. Nathaniel’s vocals are powerful and he has a great rapport with Caissie and Samantha. A lovely capture overall with no obstruction. Look Down is mostly blacked out and there are a couple quick dropouts during The Bishop scene and Lovely Ladies, but the show is otherwise fully intact. There is also some washout in high contrast wide shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - July 1, 2015 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Ramin Karimloo (Jean Valjean), John Rapson (u/s Javert), Erika Henningsen (Fantine), Melissa Mitchell (u/s Cosette), Chris McCarrell (Marius), Brennyn Lark (Éponine), Wallace Smith (Enjolras), Gavin Lee (Thénardier), Rachel Izen (Madame Thénardier), Sam Chuck (Gavroche), Joe Spieldenner (Grantaire), Weston Wells Olson (s/w Combeferre) NOTES: Act I begins at "The Runaway Cart" and nearly complete Act II. Some obstructions, but audio is quite good. Rapson's last Javert. Les Misérables - Spanish Tour - December 21, 2013 (House-Cam's master)
FORMAT: video CAST: Nicholas Martinelli (Jean Valjean), Ignasi Vidal (Javert), Elena Medina (Fantine), Talía del Val (Cosette), Guido Balzeratti (Marius), Lydia Fairén (Éponine), Manu Pilas (u/s Enjolras), Armando Pita (Thénardier), Eva Digo (Madame Thénardier), Samuel Gomez (Grantaire) Les Misérables - Tecklenburg - 2006 (1) (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Chris Murray (Jean Valjean), Marc Clear (Javert), Jana Werner (Fantine), Barbara Köhler (Éponine) NOTES: Different from the other video of this production; multicam proshot. Definitely a different performance too.
Les Misérables - Third UK (25th Anniversary) Tour - June 20, 2010 (thewho's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: John Owen-Jones (Jean Valjean), Earl Carpenter (Javert), Madalena Alberto (Fantine), Katie Hall (Cosette), Luke Kempner (u/s Marius), Rosalind James (Éponine), Jon Robyns (Enjolras), Ashley Artus (Thénardier), Lynne Wilmott (Madame Thénardier), Jordi Clark (Gavroche), David Lawrence (The Bishop), Adam Linstead (Grantaire), David Covey (Combeferre), Owain Williams (Feuilly), Christopher Jacobsen (Courfeyrac), Rhidian Marc (Joly), David Lawrence (Lesgles), Carl Mullaney (Claquesous), Carl Mullaney (Bamatabois) NOTES: Act 1 starts at At The End of the Day, Act 2 starts at Drink with me. okay quality though blurry and shaky throughout. First time in history two same productions of a major musical played in the same city. Les Misérables - West End - May 9, 1987 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Martin Smith (u/s Jean Valjean), Clive Carter (Javert), Kathleen Rowe McAllen (Fantine), Jacinta Mulcahy (Cosette), Maurice Clarke (u/s Marius), Jayne Draper (Éponine), Martin George (Enjolras), David Delve (Thénardier), Myra Sand (Madame Thénardier), Cameron Stewart (u/s Grantaire) NOTES: Commonly mistaken as December 28, 1988! Martin Smith was part of the West End cast for 6 months starting December 1986, and the non-circulated first-generation DVD labels the date as 1987/05/09. Les Misérables - West End - December 28, 1991 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Stig Rossen (Jean Valjean), Paul Leonard (Javert), Jenna Russell (Fantine), Sarah Jane Hassell (Cosette), Daryll Winslow (Marius), Meredith Braun (Éponine), Mike Sterling (u/s Enjolras), David Hampshire (u/s The Bishop), Amanda Dainty (u/s Factory Girl) NOTES: Black and white. Audio is nice and clear. A more rare color version does exist. (Proof: https://youtu.be/KI_KHnLwk_k) Les Misérables - West End - May 6, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Tim Godwin (u/s Jean Valjean), Cornell John (Javert), Kerry Ellis (Fantine), Julia Möller (Cosette), Hayden Tee (Marius), AJ Callaghan (u/s Éponine), Nolan Dark (u/s Enjolras), Barry James (Thénardier), Tracie Bennett (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Taper’s comments: Amanda and Nolan are better than the principles and Tim sounds uncannily like JOJ (Home Counties accent not-withstanding). He first understudied in 1999, when JOJ was the principal, which may explain the similarity. About half of the Chain Gang song missing and filming starts in earnest during Valjean on parole. Other parts missed because of ushers include several random one-second cover-ups, part of the wedding and about half of Finale. Heads in the way sometimes block the action on the lower right of the stage, but they are shot around well. Vantage point provides some interesting views such as of Fantine during Lovely Ladies. COVER & TITLE REVEAL + GIVEAWAY **Please share with your friends!** RELEASING 1/28/2021 ‼️‼️‼️ Keep your cards close and your enemies closer. At least that's what my mom always told me. Becoming a vampire hunter was never in my cards, but it is now that she needs my help. A decade ago vampires seized control of the bars, casinos, and the dark underbelly of society. They deal in addiction and bargain with blood, and humans over twenty-five can't fight back against their compulsion. It's made my mother vulnerable––the only family I have left. To save her, I'm forced to make a deal with the devil––one who lives above a casino, wears a crown, and wants to drink my blood. Andrianos Teresi may be dangerous and alluring but I've got a stake hidden up my sleeve. I'll go all in and play his game, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. What I don't expect? The heart that needs guarding is my own. 5 Cool Events This Week: Baybeats 2020, A Paper Art Exhibition & More
Tumblr media
1.  Visit this exhibition
A post shared by ashley yeo (@ykashley) on Aug 6, 2020 at 3:59am PDT
Singapore artist Ashley Yeo is well known for her delicate paper sculptures which are often characterised by intricate lattices designed by the artist and slowly cut by hand. We last spoke to her two years ago when she became the first Singapore artist to be shortlisted for the Loewe Craft Prize.
This was what she had to say back then about her painstaking creation process: “Ever since my school days, I’ve been very interested in the whole notion of slowness. I was looking into the aftermath… from the post-industrial era to where we are now, the post-Internet age as I see it. I feel that it’s all very overwhelming these days, always about instant gratification… so for me, the paper cutting is sort of a reflection towards that.”
Now Yeo is back with a new solo exhibition at Mizuma Gallery, titled Gentle Daylight, in which she continues to explore this fragile medium – only this time, she experiments with colours to bring out the “energy latent in structures to create forms without force.” Drop by for a poignant lesson in craft, patience, and pure beauty.
August 22 -Sept 13. Mizuma Gallery, 22 Lock Rd, #01-34 Gillman Barracks
2. Support this film festival
A post shared by The Projector (@theprojectorsg) on Aug 17, 2020 at 3:38am PDT
Indie cinema The Projector has long been a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and Pink Screen, their annual festival dedicated to the cause, is back. There are a total of five films in the line-up, ranging from the exquisite Vietnamese picture Song Lang (it’s been described as a mix of Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love and Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise) to the French drama Two Of Us (Deux), which explores the secret, decades-long relationship between two older women.
More unusual is the fact that it’s a hybrid film festival, with certain films screening at The Projector and others on their new online streaming service, The Projector Plus. Snap up those tickets quickly – we’ve been told that certain films have already sold out this weekend’s slots.
August 15-Sept 15
3. Tune in to Baybeats
A post shared by Baybeats (@baybeats) on Aug 17, 2020 at 8:29am PDT
Long-running indie music mecca Baybeats returns for a 19th edition this weekend but like everything else, they’re adjusting to the Covid-19 situation by taking it online (though a live version is slated to take place later this Nov). Acts to look out for include singer-songwriter-producer Yao, punk rockers Iman’s League, actress and singer Annette Lee, soul crooner Charlie Lim, and post-psych band Bakers In Space. A perk of going online is the intimacy: fans can catch their favourite acts after their set for an Instagram Live chat on Baybeats‘ Instagram page. Check out the full line-up and schedule here.
August 21-August 23; various times
4. Clock more local art
Jump For Joy, Chong Fah Cheong
Streets of Hope, an initiative by the National Arts Council to “lift spirits” in this difficult period through the medium of art, has added more than 200 new artworks and artists to the original line-up of 100 artists. In total, more than 350 artists of different generations, mediums, and backgrounds are represented in this initiative. You can find these wide-ranging artworks displayed on banners throughout the Civic District, Orchard Road, Nicoll Highway and Mohamed Sultan Road – so if you’re in the area, do remember to keep an eye out. If not, you can always check out all the artworks online on one handy spot, here.
A post shared by The Front Row (@thefrontrow.style) on Aug 12, 2020 at 11:02pm PDT
As the question of how the fashion industry worldwide should re-think its long-entrenched M.O. remains unanswered, a new Singapore digital fashion festival called The Front Row is one of many trying to propose new solutions. Its name is in reference to giving anyone who’s interested a FROW seat to all the shows – instead of the traditional small sphere of VIPs, editors, buyers and so on.
Over the next 10 days, more than two dozen Singapore labels (names include Max Tan, who is celebrating his label’s 10th anniversary, State Property, GinLee Studio and more) as well as others from around the region (look out for Minju Kim, the winner of Netflix‘s Next In Fashion competition) will be accessible straight from your desktop. You can instantly purchase pieces seen on the shows or pose questions to the designersn. Other than established names, do look out for works by fresh design graduates: the festival has collaborated with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts to showcase the works by their recent graduates. For the full line-up, head here.

U.S. CoffeeChamps Crowns Winners in Orange County, Calif.
The national Barista and Brewers Cup champions are crowned, while finalists from three other competitions proceed to Portland.
BY VALORIE CLARK SPECIAL TO BARISTA MAGAZINE ONLINE
Cover photo by Jenn Hall for the Specialty Coffee Association
The hundreds of coffee professionals who descended upon the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa for the U.S. Coffee Championships last weekend were welcomed by Southern California’s classic charm: blue skies, 70-degree weather, and palm trees left and right. Inside the Costa Mesa building, five stages were set up for the competitions, and the outside sounds of the fairground added to the feelings of excitement and nerves throughout the day.

Inside, baristas working at the Barista Guild Café churned out great espresso drinks all weekend. Pacific Barista Series is always the nondairy milk of choice there, and this weekend the bar was stocked with their newest offerings—Unsweetened Almond and Hemp. In addition to the baristas staffing the bar, U.S. Barista Championship competitors took turns making drinks for the crowds using their competition coffee. For guests, it was the closest they could get to tasting the milk beverages that the judges are served by each competitor.

Adding to the five stages and the café were the Roaster Village and The Market. Dozens of vendors were in attendance to show off products and give out samples. In keeping with the fairground locale, many booths were holding games with prizes. At Curtis’ booth, anyone could step right up to test their palate by guessing the origins of four brewed coffees they were serving. At stake was a brightly colored water bottle and, of course, pride. Meanwhile, Anita Tam of Slow Pour Supply and Andrew Bettis of Rancilio were there staffing the Latte Art Competition activation stage. All weekend Latte Art Champion Angie Chun wowed people with demonstrations of the intricate latte art that is expected of World Latte Art Championship competitors. It was all in service of getting U.S. baristas excited for the competition’s return to the country for the 2021 season.

Other vendors included Slayer Espresso, Acaia, and Able Coffee Roasters, an Orange County roaster focused on hiring people with autism and others who are differently abled. Hella Cocktails was there sponsoring the Coffee In Good Spirits competition, as well as introducing the specialty-coffee community to their canned Bitters & Soda beverage. Down the row, Rishi Tea was also introducing their new line of six canned sparkling teas, Sparkling Botanicals.

Clockwise from top left: Reyna Callejo of Olympia Coffee, Olympia, Wash.; Jason Yeo of Saint Frank Coffee in San Francisco; Meg Skop, an independent barista from Oakland, Calif.; Gisel Alvarez of Monarch Coffee in Kansas City, Mo.; Elisabeth Johnson of Hagen Coffee in Seattle; Rodrigo Vargas of Elixr Coffee in Philadelphia; and Jenna Gotthelf of Counter Culture Coffee in New York City. Photo by Jenn Hall.
At the five stages—for the U.S. Barista and Brewers Cup Championship and the Coffee In Good Spirits, Roaster, and Cup Tasters Qualifier—competitions were timed so the crowd could shift from one to another without risk of missing out on too much. The crowd held its breath for seemingly every performance, and cheered enthusiastically for every finish. As the competitions progressed, the air grew progressively heavier with that kind of excited tension that promises so much. When winners were finally announced on Sunday evening, it broke with cheers for the competitors who are moving on to Portland and Melbourne. Andrea Allen is this year’s U.S. Barista Champion and Elika Liftee is the U.S. Brewers Cup Champion; both will represent the USA at their respective world competitions in Melbourne in May.
