Traintober 2023: Day 1 - Free Day
Preservation on Sodor:
Sodor must be one of the most interesting places to look at when it comes to railway preservation, if not also road, sea and air preservation. For starters, the island’s railways are all still primarily run by vintage steam traction – but there’s also Harold, who is in his 60s or 70s at this point, Bertie the bus (who is nearing 100), Trevor and Terrence and George – not to mention the fact that the island seems to continue to have antique ships within its waters, including steam ships and fishing trawlers.
Tumblr media
But of course, I want to focus on the railways – and in particular how Sodor must be the British hub for heritage railways, museums and other attractions. For starters, Sodor has by far the largest heritage railway system in the world for its size, with over 80 miles of mainline, several branchlines, a narrow-gauge railway, a mountain railway and a miniature gauge railway. It also has a massive fleet of engines – 80 by the Reverend’s count on the NWR alone – making it possibly the single largest working heritage railway in the UK, if not Europe. This would instantly attract many preservationists wishing to run their locomotives, meaning that mainline excursions and visitors would be a frequent sight on the island. This in turn would bring in tourists, who would make money for the NWR and the railway the engines belong to, as well as helping the Fat Controller if one of his enignes is unable to work. It would also give us as railfans the chance to see unique motive power on a variety of trains - like a Coronation Class pulling a slow goods, or a Hughes Crab on a China Clay train - things we don't get to see anymore.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, Sodor is home to Crovan’s Gate Works, the largest steamworks of its kind in Britain. For its influence, I am going to turn to 60163 Tornado. When Tornado was built, her boiler had to be manufactured in Germany because there was just no one in the UK able to produce a boiler of the type, while the superheater header needed to be attempted by three foundries before it was assembled correctly. Crovan’s Gate Works, which is able to maintain a full fleet of engines including Gordon – who is also an A1 with many similarities – would have been able to do both in a far timelier manner. The same would go for all locomotive repair programs in the UK. Crovan’s Gate would either host locomotives or manufacture parts for them, becoming a hub for preservation across the country. Engines like Stepney or Green Arrow would be able to be overhauled at the Works, rather than be taken out of service. This would effect how many steam engines are in working order in Britain, if not Europe, as the refurbishment time would be significantly shortened - something that is compounded if said locomotive shares any components with a Sodor engine - like Talyllyn, Dolgoch, Flying Scotsman or any of the Black 5s, Panniers or Autotanks in preservation.
Tumblr media
This brings me on to the last point: International Tourism. Sodor must be one of the most visited locations in Britain in this universe. For starters, there’s all the fans of the book and TV series (which are both canon and referenced in the books). This means that Sodor would have tens of thousands of families coming to the island from around the world annually to see the ‘Eight Famous Engines’ or the ‘Steam Team’, bringing in a massive amount of revenue for hotels, local businesses and the railways themselves. But there would also be the railfans who come with the aforementioned railtours, as well as international railfans who want to see steam in action in a mainline setting – something nearly impossible anywhere on the planet. Sodor has at least one airport (and probably two, considering in real life there is an airport on Walney Island near the real-life Vickerstown), six ports connected to the NWR, and a rail and road link to the UK. The island has the infrastructure to handle the flocks of tourists, and this would in turn benefit much of the rest of Northern England. This would majorly benefit the preservation world by bringing in funding for Sodor, which is in turn able to fund things like track upgrades, or overhauls for engines beyond their own railway. It also gives other railways a good place to promote themselves, as Sodor has a guaranteed market for tourists who may travel to these other railways.
Tumblr media
You cannot understate how much these books have done for Sodor, and for railway preservation as a whole.
So, Sodor is at the very least a centre for preservation in the UK, with railtours, overhauls and masses of international tourists – but it’s also where a lot of engines were likely rescued from. We see it in Oliver and Douglas, but engines know of Sodor and its safety. I can imagine an alternate universe in which engines keep turning up throughout the 1960s, being brought to safety on Sodor and then sold to heritage railways, being overhauled at Crovan’s Gate before moving to their new homes. Sodor would act as an intermediate in this era, being able to do the paperwork to preserve engines due to its position in the national network while also being aligned with the cause of the heritage railways. Sodor is a safe haven for steam, and this would have a significant impact on its position as a preservation hub for the UK.

Romanov myths part two - did sailor nanny Derevenko betray the family?
Several members of the imperial entourage have been villainised over the decades, none more than Andrei Eremevich Derevenko, whom Anna Vyrubova claimed in her memoir to have betrayed the family. Many historians in the 20th century took this as fact, but more evidence has shown that it is highly likely that Derevenko did not betray the family or Alexei, and fell victim to one of the many lies in Anna Vyrubova's book. Some popular history books go as far as calling him 'abusive' - but let's look at the real facts.
Tumblr media
Andrei Eremevich Derevenko was born in 1878, in Volyn, Zhytomr, in the Ukraine. He was a member of the baltic fleet, originally a sailor before being employed by the Imperial Family. In May 1906 he was appointed as the Dyadka, meaning 'uncle', to Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich. Derevenko was a sailor nanny, his primary role was to look after Alexei, and to ensure that the haemophilliac did not do himself an injury.
Derevenko found himself in more favour with the family in 1907, when his actions during a collision of the yacht Standart with a large rock were seen as admirable. His experience as a sailor came in incredibly handy; he knew that the boiler rooms of the ship were most likely to sink first, so grabbed the tiny Heir and ran to the opposite side of the ship, ensuring the Tsarevich's maximum safety.
In 1910, he was paid 120 rubles a year annually. By 1913, this had increased to 360 a year. Derevenko was joined by another sailor nanny, Klimenty Grigorievich Nagorny, in 1913 to help protect the heir as he grew into a rambunctious boy. The Tsarevich especially enjoyed playing with Derevenko's sons, Sergei, Alexei, and possibly a third, Alexander. The Tsarina were the children's godmother, and in turn the Tsar and Tsarina paid yearly expenses for the boy's education, and covered the cost of a surgery one of them underwent. Derevenko kept a daily diary, where he mostly recorded the duties he performed for Alexei, and what they both got up to during the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we come on to the origin of the myth. In her memoir, Anna Vyrbova claimed that after the February Revolution, she discovered:
"Lying sprawled in a chair was the sailor Derevenko, for many years the personal attendant of the Tsarevitch, and on whom the family had bestowed every kindness, every material benefit. Bitten by the mania of revolution, this man was now displaying his gratitude for all their favors. Insolently he bawled at the boy whom he had formerly loved and cherished, to bring him this or that, to perform any menial service his mean lackey's brain could think of. Dazed and apparently only half conscious of what he was being forced to do, the child moved about trying to obey. It was too much to bear."
Anna Vyrubova was arrested in March 1917, and did not spend the following months with the family at the Alexander Palace. She claims that this event happened on 20 March 1917. In contrast, family photo albums show that Derevenko was still a part of the retinue until the day of departure to Tobolsk, and was actually promoted in July 1917 by the Tsar to the role of Alexei's official valet.
Tumblr media
Historian Charlotte Zeepvat proposes another explanation:
One of the most enigmatic figures, and the most intimately involved with Alexei, was the sailor Derevenko. Anna Virubova claimed to have seen Derevenko bullying Alexei, shouting orders at a boy too bemused to fight back. If this is true it would have been a shattering experience, but its truth is not so clear cut as it may seem. According to Anna, it happened on 20 March, two days before her own arrest. After a display like that the sailor would surely have left or been made to go, but he was still at the palace months later. Shortly before the move to Tobolsk in August he submitted an invoice for new clothes and shoes for Alexei to Colonel Kobilinski, the commandant of the palace garrison. He was asking a huge amount, so payment was withheld: when the sailor complained to the Tsaritsa and she intervened on his behalf, Kobilinski showed her the invoice. She took the Colonel's part. Derevenko was refused permission to accompany the family to Tobolsk, but months after their departure, he was still pleading to be allowed to join them. Failing that, he asked for the return of a trunk, which he said had gone to Tobolsk in error. It was found and opened, and inside were the new clothes and shoes, and an icon given to Alexei by his great-uncle, Grand Prince Sergei Alexandrovich. Was Derevenko stealing? Looking after the boy's interests in his own peculiar way? No one will ever know.
Several letters sent by Derevenko have survived. In the letters, he explains that the commissioners at the Alexander Palace and Tobolsk had informed him that there was 'no space' to take him on the trip, and that he was awaiting summons to Tobolsk, should he be required. Interestingly, these letters detail that the other sailor nanny, Nagorny, stayed in contact with Derevenko, and he also reveals that he was receiving multiple letters from the family and retinue from Tobolsk.
Historian George Hawkins, who has translated all of Alexei's correspondence and diaries from 1905-1918, found an interesting account by Comissar Pankratov. In this account, he explains that Colonel Kobylinski was confronted by Alexandra Feodorovna when Derevenko was not on the list, though was embarrassed when she discovered that he had requested a disproportionately high invoice to the Provisional Government for his duties. Pakratov added that Derevenko wrote to him repeatedly asking "when would he be called to Tobolsk to continue his official duties with the “heir”."
George Hawkins summarises: "Going by this account, it would seem he didn't [betray the Imperial Family]. Ania Vyrubova is the ultimate source for his 'betrayal' where she wrote that he started ordering Alexei about. I think something like that may well have happened, as it is also reported by Sokolov in his investigation into the fate of the Romanovs, but it would seem he still stayed with the family until their departure to Tobolsk - trying to get extra money out of the provisional government with his exaggerated bill, and kept trying to get to Tobolsk for some time."
The exact fate of Derevenko is unknown. Some sources suggest that he joined the White Army and died in 1921, either from being wounded/killed in action or succumbing to an illness. The early 1920s were years of intense turmoil and civil war in Russia, so it is not unusual that his documents drop off the record.
Though we can conclude that Derevenko did not betray the family in that he was 'abusive' to Alexei, he was not exactly popular with the suite. Pierre Gilliard recalled in his memoirs 'Thirteen Years at the Russian Court' that Derevenko preferred peasants to:
"[drop to their] knees before Alexis Nicolaïevitch to offer him what they had brought. I noticed that the boy was embarrassed and blushed violently, and when we were alone I asked him whether he liked seeing people on their knees before him. "Oh no, but Derevenko says it must be so !".
Gilliard also believes that the sailor nannies stifled Alexei's progress too much, and did not allow him to test the boundaries of his disease in order to become more self-disciplined.

As a Guy who Fixes Machines for a living, but unfortunately doesn't have Much experience with engines, *but* has read a Ton about them: please tell me about steam engines and/or their Repair Quirks and Logistics. Infodump Away :chinhands:
I'm going to be honest with you - this is one of the most flattering asks I've ever received in my 14+ years on this website.
Steam locomotives seem pretty overwhelming at first because, as you'd expect, there's a lot of moving parts, and they're actually huge. Like many large animals, people often don't realize how big they can actually get until they're in the presence of one. The one I drove, Strasburg #90, weighs in at 212,000 lbs - and she's smaller than a lot of the active steam locomotives operating today. 106 tons is nothing to sneeze at, and she's still considered smaller.
You probably don't need this in layman's terms, but I'm going to try to keep the explanations easy to understand in case anyone who doesn't work with machines reads this.
How do the beasts run?
Continuing the metaphor of these things basically being really large animals, you have to feed and water them. Early steam locomotives ran on wood, but as time went on the most common fuels became coal and oil, and today some can even run clean on vegetable oil or torrefied biomass. The fact that they need to be fed and watered fairly regularly is why there's always at least two people in the locomotive cab - you've got an engineer driving and a fireman keeping the beast fed and monitoring the water levels in the boiler.
Tumblr media
This is a diagram of a fire tube boiler from Wikipedia. Steam locomotives generally use this type of boiler, which gives them their familiar shape. The fuel is thrown into the firebox on the left of the diagram, and the heat from the fire flows up to the tubes in the boiler. The water in the boiler becomes steam (specifically what's called "wet steam" because it's saturated). The steam rises to the highest point in the boiler, the steam dome at the top. From here, the steam is sent down into a superheater, which dries it out and produces superheated steam, and that's what's directed down to the cylinders to get everything moving. The smokestack on the right of the diagram is where the exhaust gasses are released, giving off that plume of smoke everyone expects to see.
Now that the steam is at the cylinders, the pistons can start pumping and moving the driving rods on the driving wheels (the big ones). Here's an animated gif of that process, again from Wikipedia.
Tumblr media
At this point, it's basically like any other engine with pistons - the pistons get pumping and the machine starts operating. This whole section of the locomotive is referred to as the running gear, and includes the valve gear, connecting rods, brake gear, wheelsets, axleboxes, and springing.
Essentially, it's a steam engine with wheels that is capable of pulling incredible amounts of weight if everything is done correctly. Your average steam locomotive is still stronger than your average diesel or electric locomotive is. Depending on what you needed your steam locomotive to do, the size of the driving wheels would differ - locomotives built for high speed tend to have really large drive wheels, whilst locomotives designed to go slower but pull more weight have smaller drivers for better adhesion and traction.
Maintenance?
As expected, since they have a lot of moving parts, steam locomotives need a lot of active maintenance. They're checked frequently, have mandated annual inspections, and are required by the Federal Railroad Administration in the United States to have a more thorough inspection every 1,472 days of active service - so it's basically 15 years or 1,472 days of operation, whichever comes first. 90, the locomotive I drove at Strasburg, is currently undergoing her 1,472-day inspection as I write this post and she'll hopefully be back in operation for her 100th birthday next year.
One of the things that's unique about steam locomotive maintenance is that the boiler regularly has to be cleaned out, which is why the boilerplate on the front has hinges - that thing's a door! This job was more dangerous historically because boilers were often insulated with asbestos, but pretty much anything operating today has had any asbestos removed or wasn't built with it in the first place. This website has a really good explanation of the process of cleaning out and fixing up a locomotive boiler for a 1,472 day inspection, complete with photos!
In terms of steam locomotive shops, I'm biased towards Strasburg because I grew up going there all the time, but they really do perform incredible work. Late last year, one of their locomotives, #475, had a run-in with a crane left on the track due to a misthrown switch, and her smokebox took some damage. Fortunately, the damage was minor, and they were able to get her repaired in a mere 96 hours.
She now looks like this:
Tumblr media
They opted to braze weld her and didn't smooth it out as a reminder to crews to stay vigilant, so she now has some really cool battle scars.
I'm not as well-versed in repair since I don't have hands-on experience with it (yet), but once I can start volunteering I'll hopefully have some more stuff to talk about since I'm hoping to learn to work with these machines more closely! (And drive. Drive all the time. Drive forever.)

Preserving Assets:  The Role of Corrosion Inhibitors in Industrial Maintenance
Corrosion is a persistent threat to industrial assets, causing billions of dollars in damages annually across various sectors.  From oil and gas facilities to manufacturing plants, the impact of corrosion can be devastating, leading to equipment failures, production downtime, and costly repairs.  However, with the right preventive measures in place, such as corrosion inhibitors, industrial facilities can effectively mitigate the risk of corrosion and prolong the lifespan of their assets.  As a leading chemical company in Vadodara, Imperial Oilfield Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. (ICPL) understands the critical role of corrosion inhibitors in industrial maintenance.  In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of corrosion inhibitors, their applications, and the expertise of ICPL as a corrosion inhibitor manufacturer and exporter in India.
Tumblr media
Understanding Corrosion Inhibitors
Corrosion inhibitors are chemical compounds designed to protect metal surfaces from the damaging effects of corrosion.  By forming a protective barrier on the metal surface or altering the corrosion process, inhibitors prevent or slow down the oxidation and deterioration of metals in corrosive environments.  Corrosion inhibitors are widely used in various industries, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, power generation, water treatment, and manufacturing, to safeguard critical assets and infrastructure from corrosion-related failures.
The Importance of Corrosion Inhibitors in Industrial Maintenance
1.   Asset Protection:  Industrial facilities rely heavily on equipment and infrastructure made of metal, such as pipelines, tanks, vessels, and machinery.  Corrosion inhibitors play a crucial role in protecting these assets from corrosion, extending their service life and reducing the need for frequent repairs or replacements.
2.   Cost Savings:  Corrosion-related failures can result in significant financial losses due to equipment downtime, production disruptions, and repair expenses.  By incorporating corrosion inhibitors into maintenance programs, industries can minimize the risk of corrosion-related failures and realize substantial cost savings in the long run.
3.   Safety and Reliability:  Corrosion compromises the structural integrity of industrial assets, posing safety hazards to personnel and the surrounding environment.  Corrosion inhibitors help maintain the reliability and safety of critical infrastructure, reducing the likelihood of accidents, spills, and environmental contamination.
4.   Environmental Protection:  Corrosion-related leaks and spills can have detrimental environmental consequences, polluting soil, water bodies, and ecosystems.  By preventing corrosion and minimizing the risk of leaks and spills, corrosion inhibitors contribute to environmental protection and sustainability efforts.
Applications of Corrosion Inhibitors
Corrosion inhibitors find applications across various industrial sectors, where metal components are exposed to corrosive environments.  Some common applications of corrosion inhibitors include:
Oil and Gas Production:  In the oil and gas industry, corrosion inhibitors are used to protect pipelines, well casings, and production equipment from corrosion caused by corrosive fluids, gases, and environmental conditions.
Water Treatment:  Corrosion inhibitors are added to cooling water systems, boilers, and wastewater treatment facilities to prevent metal corrosion caused by dissolved oxygen, scale formation, and aggressive ions.
Manufacturing:  In manufacturing processes involving metal components, such as automotive, aerospace, and electronics manufacturing, corrosion inhibitors are used to protect parts, components, and machinery from corrosion during production, storage, and transportation.
Marine and Offshore Structures:  Corrosion inhibitors are applied to marine vessels, offshore platforms, and coastal structures to protect against corrosion in seawater environments.

The Hidden Costs of Neglecting Vaillant Boiler Servicing in London
Tumblr media
Lack of proper Vaillant boiler servicing may be considered to be an opportunity to cut on time and money, however, it isn’t the case since there are numerous penalties for such attitude. When a boiler is not serviced regularly it is likely to perform poorly as it costs more in terms of energy consumption and durability. That is why minor problems, if not addressed in time, can turn into major failures which inevitably result in the need for costly emergency work. Also, when owners choose not to service their heaters or boilers, the safety of the residents of their homes or the users of the boiler is at risk of disastrous carbon monoxide leaks. In this blog, we would like to focus on the topic of ‘why boiler maintenance is important’ as by avoiding regular servicing, households expose themselves to both high financial and safety costs.
Increased Energy Bills:
Neglecting regular Vaillant boiler servicing can lead to increased energy bills due to decreased efficiency. In the long run it gathers dirt and debris on its body hence will have to struggle in order to warm your home. This causes lower efficiency in the usage of energies and therefore leads to high utilities expenditure.
Decreased Efficiency: A neglected boiler struggles to operate efficiently, leading to more energy being used to achieve the same level of heating.
Financial Impact: The higher energy consumption directly translates into increased energy bills, adding up over time.
Comparative Savings: Regular servicing ensures your boiler runs efficiently, helping you save on energy costs in the long run by avoiding the waste associated with an inefficient system.
Risk of Costly Breakdowns:
Lack of proper Vaillant boiler maintenance can be detrimental as tiny problems that are not immediately noticeable may fester and cause costly damages. For example, one might have small dripping issues or other parts that might be worn out in a construction; if they are not well managed, they contribute to bigger damages that may cost a lot in repairs. Evening rates are slightly higher and best of all are much higher in emergencies or during the periods when the demand for heating services is highest.
There is the story of a London based homeowner who never availed his boiler for annual servicing only to be greeted by a system breakdown in the middle of a cold winter season which ended up costing him a fortune. Weekly maintenance could have noticed the matter at an early stage, economically and without the discomfort of a breakdown.
Reduced Boiler Lifespan:
When the problems are not frequently fixed, minor issues such as leakage or sedimentation may develop into major inconveniences that put pressure on the system. Not only does this increased wear add a level of wear and tear on the materials but also hastens the point at which it is more cost effective to just swap out the shoes.
Premature Replacement: An unserviced boiler may need to be replaced much earlier than expected, leading to significant out-of-pocket expenses.
Financial Comparison: The cost of regular servicing is minimal compared to the high cost of replacing a boiler prematurely, making maintenance a smart long-term investment.
Safety Risks:
From this point of view, ignoring the necessity of Vaillant boiler servicing for an extended period, can result in critical safety hazards such as carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas, which can be quite dangerous if it is present in your home. It is noticed that boilers which are not maintained properly are more likely to develop some faults and hence putting the lives of people in that home at serious risk of getting exposed to this lethal gas. Regular maintenance helps the engineering team to identify defects that may grow into dangerous ones at an early stage.
Invalidated Warranty:
Failure to undertake the recommended frequent Vaillant boiler servicing means that your warranty will become void and you will have to incur huge amounts of money for repair works. Like most boilers, the warranty of Vaillant boilers means that clients will have to service it on an annual basis. If you do not pay these regular maintenance, any problems that occur are not claimed back and so you are left to fork out for repairs or replacements on your own. Also, the fact that servicing is done in compliance with the guidelines set by Vaillant means that your boiler will not develop a fault in the first place because it is being used as it should be. To ensure that your warranty is valid there are crucial servicing that is recommended and should be taken to avoid extra cost out of your pocket.
Conclusion
Boiler service is crucial for the Vaillant boiler to ensure the safety, energy efficiency, and durability of the device. In addition to saving money on avoidable repair expenses, avoiding high energy consumption costs, and non-emergency safety issues such as carbon monoxide poisoning, maintenance goes a long way to provide comfort and greater endurance in the long run. Servicing your home’s heating system needs to be a priority to get quality centralised heating this winter.

Debunking Myths About Hot Water Boilers - What You Need to Know
Hot water boilers have been a staple in heating systems for centuries. Their development has been driven by the need for efficient, reliable heating solutions. Early versions of hot water boilers date back to the Roman era, where hypocaust systems used heated air and water to warm bathhouses and homes. Over time, the technology has evolved significantly, leading to the modern hot water boilers we rely on today.
How Modern Hot Water Boilers Work
Modern hot water boilers operate on a relatively simple principle. A fuel source—commonly natural gas, oil, or electricity - heats water within the boiler. This heated water is then circulated through a system of pipes to radiators, baseboard heaters, or underfloor heating systems, providing consistent and efficient warmth.
The key components of a modern hot water boiler include the burner, heat exchanger, and control system. The burner ignites the fuel, creating heat that is transferred to the water via the heat exchanger. The control system regulates the temperature and ensures safe operation, maintaining the desired temperature throughout the building.
Types of Modern Hot Water Boilers
Today's hot water boilers come in several types, each designed to meet specific needs and preferences.
1. Combi Boilers: Combi (combination) boilers are a popular choice for their efficiency and space-saving design. They provide both hot water and heating from a single unit, making them ideal for smaller homes. Combi boilers heat water on demand, eliminating the need for a separate hot water storage tank.
2. System Boilers: System boilers are suited for homes with higher hot water demand. They work with a hot water cylinder but do not require a cold water tank, making them more efficient and easier to install. System boilers are ideal for homes with multiple bathrooms, ensuring a consistent supply of hot water to all outlets.
3. Conventional Boilers: Also known as regular or traditional boilers, conventional boilers are best for homes with an existing heating system that includes a separate hot water cylinder and cold water tank. They are particularly effective in properties with high hot water demand and multiple radiators.
Benefits of Upgrading to Modern Hot Water Boilers
Upgrading to a modern hot water boiler can provide numerous benefits, enhancing both comfort and efficiency.
1. Increased Efficiency: Modern hot water boilers are designed to be highly efficient, converting a greater proportion of fuel into heat. This results in lower energy bills and a reduced environmental footprint.
2. Enhanced Reliability: With advancements in technology, modern hot water boilers are more reliable than ever. They are built to operate smoothly and require less frequent maintenance, providing consistent heat and hot water when you need it.
3. Improved Comfort: Modern boilers offer superior heat distribution, ensuring that every room in your home remains comfortably warm. They also provide hot water on demand, eliminating the wait for water to heat up.
4. Smart Controls: Many modern hot water boilers come equipped with smart controls, allowing you to manage your heating system remotely via a smartphone or tablet. This feature provides greater convenience and can help you optimize your heating schedule for maximum efficiency.
Maintenance Tips for Modern Hot Water Boilers
To keep your modern hot water boiler running efficiently, regular maintenance is essential.
