Been reading about popes, as one does. Here's a few things I've learned:
My boy St. Anterus was only pope for 43 days before he kicked it.
The last pope to be born in Africa (St. Gelasius I) was pope way back in 492 CE.
The practice of popes not using their real names when they become pontiff originated from one pope (St. John II) who didn't want to use his birth name (Mercurius) because of its association with a "false" god. The practice wouldn't become mainstream though until Pope Gregory V in 985.
Stephen/Stephanus/Stephen II was named pope and 3 days later he died. It was so short that he didn't even officially take office and most lists don't count him.
Formosus was on trial 7 months after he died. He was being tried for perjury and allegedly ascending to the papacy illegitimately by a later pope, Stephen VI. Formosus was found guilty and sentenced to execution (despite already being dead) and they annulled all of his acts as pope. They buried him in a cheap grave, then dug his body up and threw it in a river where it later washed up on shore. This pissed off everyone else so much that they later had to rebury him with Christian rites and Stephen then got sentenced to prison where he got strangled. The whole thing was so embarrassing that later, Pope Theodore II convened another synod that annulled the synod that annulled Formosus's papacy. Even later than that, Pope John IX held two different synods, both agreeing with Theodore and annulling Stephen's trial -then went further and prohibited all future trials of corpses. AND THEN Pope Sergius III held ANOTHER Synod and overturned the rulings of both Theodore and John, reaffirmed Formosus's conviction, and had a new epitaph inscribed on the tomb of Stephen praising him for his work.
All the stuff above was so embarrassing and so many new popes kept getting elected that nobody respected the papacy for almost a century. The popes became super corrupt and got rules by a small group of aristocrats paying them off. This era becomes known as the "Pornocracy" and "Rule of the Harlots" which just sounds sick as hell (but was actually very bad for everyone).
The first pope to canonize a saint didn't take office until 985 CE (this was Pope John XV and he canonized Bishop Ulrich of Augsburg in 993).
Adrian IV is the only pope to have been English (Anglo-Saxon specifically).

"𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗸𝗹𝗶𝘁"
Siang itu, mendung menyelimuti langit Kota Tobelo, rinai hujan mulai berguguran, awan gelap menjadi isyarat tentang menunda ataukah memilih melanjutkan perjalanan.
Adalah Desa Gorua menjadi pijakan awal kami melangkah, tempat di mana kami merapal segala doa-doa harapan. Tepatnya pukul 13.00 Wit Tim Monitoring proses COKLIT Bawaslu Halut (Ahmad Idris selaku Kordiv PHAL bersama 2 stafnya) bergerak gesit menyambangi -+ 18 Desa di Kec. Loloda utara.
Sejauh perjalanan, mata kami dimanjakan oleh pesona alam, semerbak aroma Pala dan Cengkeh seolah membunuh insting rasa jenuh. Adrenalin kami memang sedikit banyak diuji.
Tetap jaga imun tetap jaga iman ☯

The Odd Story of a Pope Chosen by a Dove
Pope Fabian was elected bishop of Rome in 236 under...unusual circumstances. Here is how it went down, according to Eusebius of Caesarea, writing in the 300s:
After the short reign of Pope Anterus, Fabian had come to Rome from the countryside when the new papal election began. "Although present," says Eusebius, Fabian "was in the mind of none." While the names of several illustrious and noble churchmen were being considered over the course of thirteen days, a dove suddenly descended upon the head of Fabian. To the assembled electors, this strange sight recalled the gospel scene of the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at the time of his baptism by John the Baptist. The congregation took this as a sign that he was marked out for this dignity, and Fabian was at once proclaimed bishop by acclamation.

The Church remembers St. Fabian of Rome, Bishop and Martyr.
Ora pro nobis.
Pope St. Fabian (c. AD 200 – 20 January 250) was the Bishop of Rome from 10 January 236 to his death in AD 250. Fabian’s feast day is commemorated on January 20, the same as Saint Sebastian, in whose church his sepulcher lies in Rome.
According to the Liber Pontificalis, Fabian was a noble Roman by birth, and his father’s name was Fabius. Nothing more is known about his background. The legend concerning the circumstances of his election is preserved by the fourth-century writer Eusebius of Caesarea (Church History, VI. 29). After the short reign of Pope Anterus, Fabian had come to Rome from the countryside when the new papal election began. “Although present,” says Eusebius, Fabian “was in the mind of none.” While the names of several illustrious and noble churchmen were being considered over the course of thirteen days, a dove suddenly descended upon the head of Fabian.
During Fabian’s reign of 14 years, there was a lull in the storm of persecution which had resulted in the exile of both Anterus’ predecessor Pontian and the antipope (and later saint) Hippolytus. Fabian had enough influence at court to effect the return of the bodies of both of these martyrs from Sardinia, where they had died at hard labor in the mines. The report that he baptized the emperor Philip the Arab and his son, however, is probably a legend, although he did seem to enjoy some connections at court, since the bodies of Pontian and Hippolytus could not have been exhumed without the emperor’s approval. According to the sixth-century historian Gregory of Tours, Fabian sent out the “apostles to the Gauls” to Christianise Gaul in AD 245. Fabian sent seven bishops from Rome to Gaul to preach the Gospel: Gatianus of Tours to Tours, Trophimus of Arles to Arles, Paul of Narbonne to Narbonne, Saturnin to Toulouse, Denis to Paris, Austromoine to Clermont, and Saint Martial to Limoges.
He also condemned Privatus, the originator of a new heresy in Africa. The Liber Pontificalis says that Fabian divided the Christian communities of Rome into seven districts, each supervised by a deacon. Eusebius (VI §43) adds that he appointed seven subdeacons to help collect the acta of the martyrs—the reports of the court proceedings on the occasion of their trials. There is also a tradition that he instituted the four minor clerical orders: porter, lector, exorcist, and acolyte. However most scholars believe these offices evolved gradually and were formally instituted at a later date. His deeds are thus described in the Liber Pontificalis: “He divided the regiones into deaconships and made seven sub-deaconships which seven secretaries oversaw, so that they brought together the deeds of the martyrs faithfully made whole, and he brought forth many works in the cemeteries.”
The Liberian Catalogue of the popes also reports that Fabian initiated considerable work on the catacombs, where honored Christians were buried, and where he also caused the body of Pope Pontian to be entombed at the catacomb of Saint Callixtus. With the advent of Emperor Decius, the Roman government’s tolerant policy toward Christianity temporarily ended. Decius ordered leading Christians to demonstrate their loyalty to Rome by offering incense to the cult images of deities which represented the Roman state. This was unacceptable to many Christians, who, while no longer holding most of the laws of the Old Testament to apply to them, took the commandment against idolatry with deadly seriousness. Fabian was thus one of the earliest victims of Decius, dying as a martyr on AD 20 January 250, at the beginning of the Decian persecution, probably in prison rather than by execution. Fabian was buried in the catacomb of Callixtus in Rome. The Greek inscription on his tomb has survived, and bears the words: Fabian, Bishop, Martyr. His remains were later reinterred at San Sebastiano fuori le mura by Pope Clement XI where the Albani Chapel is dedicated in his honour.
Almighty God, who gave to your servant Fabian boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

January 20 - St. Fabian - 250 A.D
He succeeded St. Anterus in the pontificate, in the year 236. Eusebius relates, 367 that in an assembly of the people and clergy, held for the election of a pastor in his room, a dove, unexpectedly appearing, settled, to the great surprise of all present, on the head of St. Fabian; and that this miraculous sign united the votes of the clergy and people in promoting him, though not thought of before, as being a layman and a stranger. He governed the church sixteen years, sent St. Dionysius and other preachers into Gaul, and condemned Privatus, a broacher of a new heresy in Africa, as appears from St. Cyprian. 368 St. Fabian died a glorious martyr in the persecution of Decius, in 250, as St. Cyprian and St. Jerom witness. The former, writing to his successor, St. Cornelius, calls him an incomparable man; and says, that the glory of his death had answered the purity and holiness of his life. 369 The saints made God, and the accomplishment of his holy will, the great object of all their petitions in their prayers, and their only aim in all their actions. “God,” says St. Austin, 370 “in his promises to hear our prayers, is desirous to bestow himself upon us; if you find any thing better than him, ask it, but if you ask any thing beneath him, you put an affront upon him, and hurt yourself by preferring to him a creature which he framed: pray in the spirit and sentiment of love, in which the royal prophet said to him, ‘Thou, O Lord, art my portion.’ 371 Let others choose to themselves portions among creatures, for my part, Thou art my portion, Thee alone have I chosen for my whole inheritance.”

Saint of the Day – 20 January – St Pope Fabian (c 200 – c 250) Martyr, Peacemaker, Evangeliser, Confessor, Administrator and Reformer, Apostle of Charity – the Bishop of Rome from 10 January 236 to his death in 250, succeeding Anterus.   He is famous for the miraculous nature of his election, in which a dove is said to have descended on his head to mark him as the Holy Spirit’s unexpected choice to become the next pope.   He was succeeded by Cornelius.
youtube
According to the Liber Pontificalis, Fabian was a noble Roman by birth and his father’s name was Fabius.
To the assembled electors, this strange sight recalled the gospel scene of the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at the time of his baptism by John the Baptist.   The congregation took this as a sign that he was marked out for this dignity and Fabian was at once proclaimed bishop by acclamation.
Tumblr media
During Fabian’s reign of 14 years, there was a lull in the storm of persecution which had resulted in the exile of both Anterus’ predecessor Pontian and the antipope (and later saint) Hippolytus.   Fabian had enough influence at court to effect the return of the bodies of both of these martyrs from Sardinia, where they had died at hard labour in the mines.   The report that he baptised the emperor Philip the Arab and his son, however, is probably a legend, although he did seem to enjoy some connections at court, since the bodies of Pontian and Hippolytus could not have been exhumed without the emperor’s approval.
According to the sixth-century historian Gregory of Tours, Fabian sent out the “apostles to the Gauls” to Christianise Gaul in A.D. 245.   Fabian sent seven bishops from Rome to Gaul to preach the Gospel.  He also condemned Privatus, the originator of a new heresy in Africa.
Tumblr media
The Liber Pontificalis says that Fabian divided the Christian communities of Rome into seven districts, each supervised by a deacon.   Eusebius (VI §43) adds that he appointed seven subdeacons to help collect the acta of the martyrs—the reports of the court proceedings on the occasion of their trials.   There is also a tradition that he instituted the four minor clerical orders – porter, lector, exorcist and acolyte.
His deeds are thus described in the Liber Pontificalis: “He divided the regiones into deaconships and made seven sub-deaconships which seven secretaries oversaw, so that they brought together the deeds of the martyrs faithfully made whole and he brought forth many works in the cemeteries.”
The Liberian Catalogue of the popes also reports that Fabian initiated considerable work on the catacombs, where honoured Christians were buried and where he also caused the body of Pope Pontian to be entombed at the catacomb of Saint Callixtus.
Tumblr media
With the advent of Emperor Decius, the Roman government’s tolerant policy toward Christianity temporarily ended.   Decius ordered leading Christians to demonstrate their loyalty to Rome by offering incense to the cult images of deities which represented the Roman state.   This was unacceptable to many Christians, who, while no longer holding most of the laws of the Old Testament to apply to them, took the commandment against idolatry with deadly seriousness.   Fabian was thus one of the earliest victims of Decius, dying as a martyr on 20 January 250, at the beginning of the Decian persecution, probably in prison rather than by execution.
Tumblr media
Fabian was buried in the catacomb of Callixtus in Rome.   The Greek inscription on his tomb has survived, and bears the words: Fabian, Bishop, Martyr.
His remains were later re-interred at San Sebastian’s Outside the Walls, (appropriately, for these two Martyrs share today as their Memorial) by Pope Clement XI where the Albani Chapel is dedicated in his honour.

The Hidden Lab
Suwan lifted a book titled “Advanced Aetherology” from the tall bookshelves of the Occult Curioso. There was a soft clicking sound and then a small door appeared and opened behind the bookshelves.
Suwan walked down a long narrow corridor. The stone walls had Concealment and Protective Wards written on them. The hallway led to a dimly lit Laboratory. There were glass tubes and jars of different shapes set in a row on mounted shelves. Each tube had handwritten labels that read: Ichor of Rysswilf, Dust of Lady Black, Avis Wing of Zeviagoth, Wraith Cloth of Anterus; Alpha Hair of The Heirs.
To the left of the shelves were large murals with Geometric Array Diagrams and Conjurer Glyphs tacked on the walls. Stacks of rolled up scrolls filled with notes were organized neatly in woven baskets under the mounted shelves. Some of the scrolls had labels that read: Crystal Tombstones, The Yacht, The Circle of Anterus, Aetherial Sea Tower, Joining Rituals. Suwan grabbed an unsealed scroll labeled; Astral Agents Estate Map.
Suwan took a Card from his jacket and laid it on the Agency Map. The Card spun around floating in the air and glowed with Celestial Aether. Using a magnifying glass and a quill Suwan made tick marks on several different points on the Estate Map.
After a bell Suwan closed his eyes and reached out to Sergei with his mind. “”Sergei I have located the structural weak points of the Agency Estate. Expect a delivery in two bells. Please forward the information to Gideon and let Director Sarij know…””
