Anthony J. Portantino Appointed to International Genocide Memorial Commission
The State Senate Rules Committee appointed Senator Anthony J. Portantino to the International Genocide Memorial Commission. The Commission was established in 2006 through legislation. It is tasked with creating an International Genocide Memorial in the Historic Region of the State Capitol.
“I am tremendously honored to have been entrusted to serve on the International Genocide Memorial Commission. California is an amazingly diverse state, home to many survivors and descendants of the world’s horrific genocides. It’s humbling to have been chosen to help establish a memorial honoring the victims of crimes against humanity and appropriately respecting their descendants,” commented Portantino.
Portantino has a long and distinguished record of cooperation with the Armenian American community.  Prior to being elected to the State Senate, he served on the board of the Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial Committee. The nonprofit facilitated the construction of the Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial, unveiled in April 2015. This year, Portantino successfully authored a resolution to place freeway exit signs on the 210 directing attention to the Pasadena memorial.  As Mayor of La Cañada Flintridge, Portantino was the first city mayor to issue a proclamation recognizing the genocide and commemorating April 24.  He has proudly co-authored Assembly and Senate Resolutions commemorating the genocide and urging the return of church properties to their rightful congregations.
“We as a community must always remember and learn from the past.  I look forward to working through the commission to create a memorial that appropriately commemorates the victims while highlighting the resilience of genocide survivors,” added Portantino.
Sen. Portantino represents nearly 930,000 people in the 25th Senate District, which includes Altadena, Atwater Village, Bradbury, Burbank, Claremont, Duarte, Glendale, Glendora, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta,  Lake View Terrace, La Verne, Los Feliz, Monrovia, Montrose,  Pasadena,  San Dimas, San Marino, Shadow Hills, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena,  Sunland-Tujunga, and Upland.

California Assembly panel passes resolution on sister state relationship with Armenia’s Syunik
New Post has been published on https://armenia.in-the.news/politics/california-assembly-panel-passes-resolution-on-sister-state-relationship-with-armenias-syunik-78193-03-09-2021/
California Assembly panel passes resolution on sister state relationship with Armenia’s Syunik
Massis Post – Assemblymember Chris Holden’s resolution, ACR 105, that establishes a sister state relationship between California and the Armenian Province of Syunik – the southernmost province in Armenia, passed the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy on Thursday.
The resolution declares California’s solidarity with Syunik and will encourage and facilitate mutually beneficial educational, economic, and cultural exchanges. The resolution is joint authored by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, and coauthored by Assemblymembers Lisa Calderon, Laura Friedman, Vince Fong, Jesse Gabriel, Christina Garcia, Mike Gipson, Tom Lackey, Kevin Mullin, Luz Rivas, and Senators Bob Archuleta, Andreas Borgeas, Maria Elena Durazo, Bob Hertzberg, and Anthony Portantino.
“For thousands of years, the state of Syunik has had profound historical and cultural significance for Armenia and the world,” said Assemblymember Chris Holden. “Strengthening our relationship with the Syunik comes at a critical time as regional powers like Azerbaijan and Turkey pose a threat to its existence.”
“I enthusiastically thank Assemblymember Chris Holden for initiating this resolution of paramount importance,” said Consul General of Armenia in Los Angeles, Ambassador Armen Bairbourtian. “The establishment of a California-Syunik Sister State relationship will develop a multidimensional partnership between the U.S. State of California and the Armenian Province of Syunik. My gratitude also goes to all the state legislators supporting the resolution.”
State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) released a statement in support of the measure.
“Today’s resolution adopting the Province of Syunik as California’s sister state is an important declaration of friendship and I am proud to support this endeavor. Many of my neighbors and constituents have family and friends living in Syunik. ACR 105 serves as a connecting bridge to the Province of Syunik and I am confident the relationship will bring prosperity for both regions and facilitate mutually beneficial educational, economic, and cultural exchanges. In 2019, I introduced SB 302 to re-establish the California-Armenia Trade Office in hopes of building a vibrant business relationship between California and Armenia. Governor Newsom signed an agreement to establish the first California Trade and Services Desk in Armenia. The formal MOU between GO-Biz and Impact Hub Yerevan was signed earlier this year. The establishment of a sister state relationship is a continuation of our efforts to strengthen ties with Armenia and represents the strong bond between people of California and Armenia.”
Syunik is one of the original provinces of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia and is currently bordered by Artsakh or Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan, and Iran. Syunik is home to the Armenian Stonehenge, Karahounj, that dates back to the bronze age; The Ughtasar Mountain petroglyphs that are 7,000 years old; the 9th Century Tatev Monastery that served as a center of scholastic and spiritual activity. The most populated town in the province is its capital, Kapan with 43,000 residents.
The full text of the resolution, which will be next be heard on the Assembly Floor, can be found here:

Quote
The data reads like a pitch for a dystopian blockbuster: One out of every 11,600 San Franciscans is a billionaire, while one out of five Californians lives below the poverty level. In Los Angeles, housing costs have increased so much that the typical renter cannot afford the average rent, exacerbating the gap between the rich and the poor. Two-thirds of California voters supported Senate Bill 50, which would have increased building heights around transit and may have started to change that narrative by spurring more housing. But the bill was shelved by one of Southern California’s own. “This isn’t the right fix at this time to do that,” said Sen. Anthony Portantino, who held up the bill as the chairman of the appropriations committee.
California’s housing bills failed—and so did California’s lawmakers
Portantino is a garbage human who needs to be primaried from the Left as soon as possible, and he needs to know that voters are replacing him because of this.

Senate Bill 50 Threatens L.A.’s Historic Neighborhoods
Tumblr media
Senate Bill 50 (SB 50) is a proposed state-wide bill that is intended to increase density and streamline the production of multi-family housing development in California. If passed, SB 50 would override local land use restrictions, allowing multi-family buildings to go up near “high quality” train and bus stops.
While the intent of providing more housing may be good, we believe the bill and its approach is highly problematic as currently written. It poses a one-size-fits-all solution and a blunt, statewide fix that would outstrip local authority and planning.
As part of a statewide coalition of preservation organizations, the Conservancy has requested amendments to SB 50 to ensure adequate preservation safeguards are added to the legislation. Specifically, we want to ensure that the legislation would allow for a review process and exemptions. We have asked for safeguards that would protect designated historic structures and historic districts.
Preservation and density are not mutually exclusive, or an either/or choice. We believe there can be a healthy balance with thoughtful planning. We want to ensure that the revised bill language will not impose a one-size-fits-all approach and unnecessarily harm California’s unique historic resources and neighborhoods. If passed without adequate safeguards, this legislation threatens L.A.'s older and historic neighborhoods.
How You Can Help
SB 50 will go to the California Senate’s Appropriations Committee this Thursday, May 16.
Please contact your State Senate representative (find your representative here) and the members of the California State Senate Appropriations Committee and urge them to include adequate safeguards for preservation in this bill.
SB 50 is moving quickly, so don’t delay in getting in touch with your representative and the members of the committee!
