Urania with Orontius Finnaeus (Oronce Finé) - from Orontius' book, Cosmographia, 1542
"All things serve and obey the universe; the earth, the sea, the sun, the stars, and the plants and animals of the earth. Our body likewise obeys the same, in being sick and well, young and old, and passing through the other changes decreed. It is therefore reasonable that what depends on ourselves, that is, our own understanding, should not be the only rebel. For the universe is powerful and superior, and consults the best for us by governing us in conjunction with the whole. And further; opposition, besides that it is unreasonable, and produces nothing except a vain struggle, throws us into pain and sorrows."
Epictetus; Carter, Elizabeth. The Complete Works of Epictetus (p. 419). Lazy Raven Publishing. Kindle Edition.
...
"Rare separated first edition of Oronce Fine’s Cosmographia. Mortimer, French, 226; Brun, p. 189; Renouard, Colines, pp. 358-359. It is a revised and enlarged version of the third part of the Protomathesis (1532). This present work is composed of two parts, a first one dedicated to cosmography and a second one to trigonometry.
Oronce Fine (1494-1555) took a course of humanities and philosophy in the college of Navarre, and dropped out of these studies to dedicate himself entirely to mathematics. All the contemporary writers are unanimous in the praises they sing of this professor; They speak of him with admiration, and indeed, his lessons seem to have aroused the greatest interest. All the remarkable men of his time, in the arts and in the judicial authorities, princes, ambassadors, rushed to his lessons: the King himself, it is assured, went more than once. The credit of this professor is to have, thanks to the spark of his teaching, encouraged the study of exact sciences.
In this treatise, the mathematician, astronomer and cartographer Oronce Fine, called by Hoefer “the restorer of mathematics in France”, gives instructions for the drawing up of maps by using as an example the South of France and details three methods for the projection of a world map on a plane surface.
The first part encloses “the description of the fixed celestial sphere used for reference, essential ideas concerning the astronomy of the ‘primim mobile’ (right and oblique ascensions and the duration of diurnal arcs)” (DSB). Fine’s cosmography competed with Sacrobosco and Appian’s ones as much with his authority as with his popularity.
The abundant illustration is composed of a superb frontispiece title illustrated with a large frame of liberal arts, here, in first state, of a large full-page plate representing Urania and the author and of 92 expressive figures, 25 of which published here for the first time. “Of the eighty-nine woodcuts, sixty-four are the original blocks designed by Finé for the ‘Cosmographia’ section of the ‘Protomathesis’. Sixteen of the ‘Protomathesis’ blocks were dropped or replaced” (Mortimer)."

A Sojourn in Italia - Days 64 & 65 - Matera
Luisa has blogged about our drive through Alberobello and how we decided to give up and drive directly to Matera. On our way there, we were desperate to find a bar for both a toilet and for some lunch. Somehow the quiet country roads we were traversing did not have much to choose from. For example, following one sign to a pizzeria on a side road simply led us to a closed restaurant. We finally found a small bar open at about 1:30 and tried to order a couple of panini. The woman serving us apologised profusely but said that they were out of the small rolls that are used to make them and the only bread she had available was some sliced white bread (I didn’t think it even existed here!). I don’t think she expected us to accept the offer, but as Luisa said “quando si ha fame si deve mangiare ciò che è disponibile” (when you’re hungry you have to eat what’s available). The woman made us some toasted sandwiches with Mozzarella and Prosciutto. They were surprisingly good, the white bread letting the filling dominate. But what’s funny about this is while we sat eating our sandwiches, three other Italians individually refused the same offer preferring to go elsewhere. (see, sliced white bread really isn’t a thing here!)
Matera on the other hand was so good we decided to stay for an extra night. If some of the images look somewhat familiar, then you have probably watched one of several dozen movies that used Matera as their location. Perhaps two of the better known ones are the remake of Ben Hur. (2016) and the James Bond movie, No Time To Die.

The original settlement of Matera lies in two canyons carved out by the Gravina River. This area, the Sassi di Matera, is a complex of cave dwellings carved into the walls of the ancient river canyon. Over the course of its history, Matera has been occupied by Romans, Longobards, Byzantines, Saracens, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, and Bourbons.

Matera is a World Heritage listed site and is most certainly picturesque, but its history is complicated. Lonely planet says that it’s perhaps the third-longest continuously inhabited human settlement, having first been settled in the paleolithic era, about 9,000 BC. It’s almost certainly the first inhabited area in Italy. As well as having abundant game in those times, the natural caves in the gorge are an attraction with the soft rock making it easy to both expand the existing caves and to create additional ones. The gorge is full of caves as are the lower sections of the main city. But in the mid 20th century, these caves were also a symbol of the poverty of Southern Italy. The region fell into poverty from the mid 1800s. In 1950, the Italian Prime Minister Alcide de Gaspari visited the area and was shocked, calling it the “shame of Italy”. He set about building new housing and forcibly moving the people out of the caves into the new homes. Only in 1962 were people allowed to reuse the caves and only if they fully restored and renovated them at their own expense. The main restoration of the area really began in the 1980’s with money from the EU, UNESCO and Hollywood!
Matera wasn’t always so poor, its had periods of splendour including during Roman times as a city either on or close to the famous Appian Way (I haven’t been able to quite clarify whether Matera was on the Appian Way or close to it, but either way it was an important Roman City). While the region was in deep poverty following WW2, its history is rich and the Sassi originally had good dwellings.
We arrived in Matera about 2:30 on Saturday afternoon and booked into our hotel. We’d deliberately chosen a modern hotel both for comfort and to keep costs low and because we did not want yet another AirBnB - some had not lived up to expectations. Our hotel was about 1.4 Km from the old city and an easy walk (no hills!). So we checked in, dumped our luggage in our room and headed off to the old city. We walked for about 1km towards what we thought was the centre of town, quite confused about the busy street which was quite contemporary, and what we’d read about the timelessness and very old age of Matera. We finally found a bar where we could stop, get ourselves an apperativo and check the maps we’d picked up at the hotel. Reassured the we were on the right track, we headed off up the road
We didn’t quite know what to expect but discovered that the Mercatino di Natale (Christmas market) was surprisingly still operating and that the place was full of people including many Italian’s who had decided to make use of the long-weekend. As the Friday was a festival day and a Public Holiday (the day of the Befana), this was a long weekend in Italy (they are rarer than in Australia as the Italians do not change public holidays to create long weekends and if the day falls on a weekend, then there’s no week-day catchup.)
As we wandered through the market, we came to the end of the road and a balcony where we could look over the the "Sassi di Matera" (the ‘Stones of Matera). It was an amazing sight - a crazy network of old, old buildings and narrow, cobbled streets. The Sassi were first settled in prehistoric times, and these dwellings are thought to be among the first ever human settlements in what is now Italy. So, of course, we set off down the stairs to explore the Sassi further. We wandered down into the heart of the tourist route through the Sassi, finally making our way up to the Duomo on the other side (the Duomo is the main church in any Italian city). The duomo was closed, so we stood with a crowd of people looking back towards the west watching the sun set.

Some of the highlights of that first day:
We stumbled on the Chiesa di San Vitto al Lombardo, an old rock church that had been built in the 13th century (there are dozen of churches here in Matera which were built in the caves hundreds of years ago).
As we made our way to the Duomo, we heard the wonderful bells of its bell tower on the way. The Duomo is located in the Sasso Barisano area and habitation of this area in the high Middle Ages. The Duomo itself was built in the 1200’s, reaching completion in 1270.
We visited one of the old cave dwellings on our first day. The guide at this cave was able to give us a little information but we didn’t really get a sense of what living there might have been like.
We walked quite slowly (very rare for Luisa) because the rocky streets and stair were so slippery. I slipped on one occasion losing my footing despite wearing my Merrell boots which usually grip well. We both started slipping on numerous occasions as the paths are so worn that they are shiny. Luisa kept wondering about how many bones have been broken on these streets over the centuries.
Another church we stumbled across was the Chiesa San Giovanni Battista, a lovely old church, built in the 13th and 18th centuries. We spent some time in the church, listening to two musicians practicing on the organ and sax. It was peaceful, lovely and an appreciated break from all our walking.
After the sun set we decided to head back to our hotel and hopefully find somewhere to eat along the way. We were having no luck on our route until we passed by a panificio (bakery) specialising in sour dough. The has been operating since 1890 and is currently run by the great grand daughters of the original baker. We feasted on beautiful sour dough focaccia topped with artichokes and mushrooms, and a prosciutto and cheese strudel. The panificio was Il Forno di Gennaro.
Day 2:
The next morning after a satisfying breakfast at the hotel we set off to explore various parts of the city. Expecting to follow one route, we found ourselves going our own way to join the route we’d originally planned for the second part of the day, at its other end. Mainly we walked a route around the edge of the town, but we also revisited parts of the centre.
Some standouts in no particular order:
We visited another cave dwelling. This one was different to that of the first day being set up with a video and laid out like an original family dwelling. The video was a description of the life of a man who had lived in the cave as a young boy, his recollections of his life and homage to his father. The dwelling was set up with all the furniture and models of animals that the people who lived there would have raised. While it looked clean and fresh, the reality for the family which resided there would have been very different: the whole family lived and slept in the one room, with one bed for the parents and the eldest child. The other room had a single bed for another child and the baby slept in either a small crib or sometimes in the drawers of the old dresser. The second room (with the single bed) was for the animals which lived right there with the family - chickens which ran around the house, the donkey and a couple of pigs.
From the late 1800’s families in these cave houses lived in absolute poverty. As noted before, the government stepped in in the 1950’s and moved them to more modern accommodation. It’s hard to imagine what that process would have been like; to be taken away from everything that was familiar including the local community and probably their animals but to have access to a healthier and larger living space.

This article from the Guardian in 2017 gives some more information about these forced moves and how the Sassi have been revived - largely at the behest of a group of children who remembered the community values of the Sassi as well as the poverty and fought to have them restored. See:
To our surprise we came across several Dali statues during our walks. These were unexpected and a delightful surprise. As far as I can tell, the Dali exhibition in Matera was set up as part of it’s role as a European Capital of Culture and I think the exhibition was meant to be shown in early 2020. Of course Covid shut all that down and it seems that the exhibition has been held over to 2022. It’s destined to finish at the end of January 2023, but I suspect that the major works that have been set up in the piazza’s may be destined to remain they sure look permanent.

Another surprising find was a gallery of Nisio Lopergolo. As we walked through the Sassi, I noticed a couple of wooden carvings in a side street and we wandered up to have a look. Signore Nisio Lopergolo invited us into his gallery which is within one of the original cave dwellings. Nisio is a ceramic artist and sculptor and his work is very different to many of the other workshops/shops around Matera. He is an artist and he has received awards for his work. The pieces were stunning and also fascinating, and he took the time to explain some of the pieces to us.
One such piece which Nisio showed us was the Coppa di Pitagora (Pythagorean cup) or Justice cup. This cup is reputed to have been invented by the Greek philosopher and mathematician, Pythagoras, who wanted to convey a message of fairness to his countrymen, urging them to not be greedy but to be fair and balanced. The cup can be filled up t a certain point marked inside, but if it is filled beyond this point, all of the liquid is expelled completely through a hole at the bottom. As they say, “Grasp all, lose all”. Another design was a wine decanter that delivered a precise amount each time you pour out from it.

Nisio has carved figures into the walls and ceilings of his cave - you can see some of the figures on his website.
Later we made our way to the edge of Sasso Barisano, Civita, Rione Pianelle and Sasso Caveoso. We could see the caves on the other side of the canyon, and the paths leading down to the bottom of the canyon and over to the other side. Luisa was briefly tempted to walk the winding track down and over to the other side but it was only a very fleeting thought (we were both pretty tired by then).
Finally it was time to find a restaurant for lunch. But what we had forgotten was this was domenica (Sunday) and it seems that most Italians go out for Sunday lunch and booking a table is mandatory to secure a place. After unsuccessfully trying several restaurants including some rather pricy options, we finally settled on an unassuming bar/cafe, mainly because it was the only bar/cafe we found that advertised meals other than taglieri (platters of salumi and cheeses). Well weren't we in for a treat! My dish was a fantastic dish of Italian sausage cooked with carrots and cabbage in a paper wrap. While perhaps sounding unassuming it was wonderful. Luisa on the other hand, tried the baccala. Baccala is a dish made from dried salted cod and is not a traditional Puglian dish. But Luisa loves baccala and was interested in trying this variation on the traditional Venetian dish. It was delicious, with the cod being cooked lightly in a tomato based sauce (traditionally it's a cream or milk based sauce). We also tried out a dish of ceci neri cooked with wild chicory (delicious).
After lunch we walked up to the castello. Unfortunatlety it was closed and the path was very slippery. As you might expect the moat is empty but Luisa says she’d love to see a castle with a full moat!!!
We were better prepared for dinner that night. We’d bought a couple of bread rolls in the morning and we ate them for dinner - with a Puglian smoked cheese called caciocavallo, mixed lettuce and the last of our biscuits. And the chocolate we’d bought at the Mercatino di Natale which had been ridiculously overpriced and was actually pretty ordinary.
The next morning we headed back home via the autostrada. An interesting experience was at the payment gate on our exit. The machine could not read our entrance ticket (you grab a ticket from the gate on entering and autostrada and the exit gate reads this and works out your fee). We’d only noticed that the gate was broken after we’d driven in - it looked like someone had given up and driven through, so I don’t think our 's was the only ticket it couldn’t read. Anyway, you must not exit the vehicle and you must not try to back up. Help is via an intercom and in Italian. In my broken Italian I managed to explain that it could not read our ticket and eventually worked out that I was being asked to tell the man at the other end what the entrance location printed on the ticket was. He quickly entered the price manually from his terminal somewhere in the ether, the machine that couldn’t read our ticket read the credit card just fine and with the clear mechanical “Arrivederci” telling us it was fine to go we exited the gate.

Vacation in the Eternal City
Fandom:Hetalia
Characters/Pairings: Switzerland x nyo!Greece, Genoa x nyo!Cyprus
Rating: K
Genres: Romance, Human AU
It was the last day before Antigone and Nausicaa would depart for their trip in Rome where they would stay for ten days.
They wouldn't exactly be alone. They would travelled along with Basch and Pancrazio their beloved boyfriends. And of course by plane.
Luckily they have booked their flight tickets and rooms a month earlier searching for the best and most economic offers they could find. They actually searched it very well until they found something good. They even sent messages to their soulmates so they would find a solution all together.
The plane would leave from the airport Macedonia of Thessaloniki at 8:00 so the two sisters should go to bed early if they didn't want to lose the flight.
Actually the last day before department the two sisters checked their luggages to check that nothing was missing and luckily everything was in order so there was no reason for them to worry if they forgot something.
They even ate something light that day and took lots of care of themselves before going to bed. After their bath they chose which clothes they would wear tomorrow and around 9 pm they said "Kalinyxta"(Good Night) to eachother. The two girls went to their bedrooms where they both fell sweetly in Morpheus' arms. Luckily for them, they set their alarms so they would wake up the right hour.
When it already went 7 at morning Antigone and Nausicaa after having breakfast they got prepared and after checking that everything was in order and they didn't forget anything, they took the bus to go to the airport.
When they arrived they noticed that Basch and Pancrazio were already there with their own luggage as well and stood outside the building. So they went near them and greeted them happily.
"Good morning agapi" Antigone greeted Basch smiling "Which is your ticket number"?
"Good morning to you as well Liebe" Basch responded to her "well my ticket number is 32A. How about you"?
The young woman told with such excitement: "My own ticket number is 32B. We will sit next to eachother. That's amazing"
Hearing those words a smile formed on the young man's face.
"Kalimera sweetheart" was Nausicaa's greeting to Pancrazio. "Which is exactly the number of your ticket"?
"Buongiorno beautiful" Pancrazio answered to her. "It has the number 33B on it. And yours"?
The other young woman said to him smiling: "Mine has the number 33A on it. We will sit next to eachother as well"
Seeing her smile he smiled in response as well.
But they couldn't stay outside for too long. So they entered the building and after everything being checked they were ready to take the airplane which would fly them to Rome. And before they departed for their trip, they should leave their suitcases on the airport's special room for luggages first.
At the moment they entered the airplane , they sat on their seats and fastened their belts very carefully.
Of course they had their tickets on their hands , so they were ready when they would be checked.
The passengers in the plane , including these four waited to hear the pilot's announcement and when he finished his speech the trip started.
Some minutes after the airplane took off, two lovely women who were actually flight attendants offer the passengers cookies and a glass of juice.
During the whole trip Antigone, Basch, Pancrazio and Nausicaa were chatting together, so they wouldn't get bored all that time they travelled.
Luckily the flight was successful and everything was in order. Even the passengers were all fine.
The airplane landed successfully and with safety on the Fiumicino airport of Rome.
The first thing they did was to go and take their suitcases. When they did it they bought tickets and took the bus to go to the hotel where they would while being in the Eternal City.
Although the bus came a bit earlier than the excepted . They heard that sometimes it might be late, depending on how heavy the traffic was.
After their long lasting trip they arrived to the hotel that they would stay. The hotel was a huge five star building that had such a breathtaking architecture style.
The receptionist greeted them smiling and gave them their room keys and wished them to enjoy their stay.
Their rooms were on the second floor of the hotel. They had both a double bed, television, luxury bathroom and a little table along with some chairs. In other words everything they needed was there.
Also their balconies offered the visitors a beautiful view of the Colosseum.
The next morning after having breakfast the two couples sat in the hotel's living room and started talking about where they could go and what to do. But no one could really decide.
"So we'll go and see the Palatine Hill first and after this ,it's the Capitoline Museum's turn" said Pancrazio to the other three. "And in the afternoon we'll drink something in one of the cafès near Piaza Navona.
In those words Nausicaa hugged him smiling and at the same time she told him : "You have such amazing ideas love".
Seeing her lovely smile, he also smiled sweetly back , looking her directly on the eyes.
Few minutes later they left the hotel making sure that they didn't forgot to take the keys of their rooms first.
After long walking they finally arrived to the Palatine Hill the place where the Roman Emperors lived.
"I always dreamed to see this place in real life" Antigone said enthusiastically and she wasn't able to hide her happiness during that time.
"In books it looks amazing , but now that we see it in front of us it is more beautiful" Nausicaa agreed with her sister.
Seeing how much their girlfriends loved that place , Basch and Pancrazio felt such pleasure inside.
The next sightseeing , Capitoline Museums didn't disappoint them either. Everything there looked so amazing and the tour guide was so kind and explained everything in a way that nobody could get bored. She was even ready to answer in any questions that the visitors had.
The most amazing part of their visit in Capitoline Museums was Palazzo dei Conservatori which had many gorgeous Roman , Greek and Egyptian sculptures but for them the best ones were the busts and statues of Roman Emperors.
During noon they went to a restaurant to have lunch. The prices weren't too high or two low but the food and the service itself were both excellent.
After finish the meal and paying, the returned to the hotel to get a rest.
Before the two couples went inside the rooms they booked(they were actually two rooms, one for each couple), they agreed to go to Piazza Navona in the afternoon at 6:30.
That afternoon Piazza Navona was full of life. People could be seen everywhere: families, couples and even groups of friends.
Meanwhile the Greek sisters and their boyfriends were admiring on how gorgeous it was.
But finding a place to sit and drink something was rather difficult. Many of them were full while other were too expensive for their tastes.
Despite of this looking impossible they continued their search until they found a place that looked like a dream and with good prices.
It had such a lovely atmosphere and the romantic Italian music that was played there it was such a blessing for the folks' ears
While the four of them were talking , the time they had to pay and return to the hotel.
One of the waiters approached them and told them how much did those things they ordered costed.
That time Basch was almost to take some money from his wallet but when Pancrazio told him that he would do it for all them.
And they didn't really need to argue for this. Basically they didn't want to get on such a pointless fight and give a bad impression to everyone there and especially to their beloved girlfriends.
As soon as they payed , they returned to the hotel to sleep , so they would have more energy for the next day.
The time they arrived to the hotel, they went to their rooms and only after taking care of themselves and wore their pijamas finally slept.
In the first room Antigone loved how Basch hugged her while they were sleeping. She felt protected.
In the second one Nausicaa felt so beautiful in Pancrazio's hug. She had a feeling of such tenderness.
The next day the visited the Holy See also known as Vatican City. They were impressed so much by its amazingness.
Although they had to wear clothes that covered almost their whole bodies since the clothing rules were really strict.
During all that time they were in Rome , they also visited the rest of its sightseeings like the Appian Why, Castel Sant'Angelo, Aurelian Walls and the Pantheon.
Each day they would stay in Rome there were different activities for them to do so they would never get bored.
Everytime it was too hot they were swimming in the hotel's pool. There were actually two. A big one for the adults and one smaller for the children.
Sometimes they would swim in the hotel's pool. There were actually two. A big one for the adults and one smaller for the children.
Actually there were more places for them to visit. And their plan was to see all of them.
Their main vacation play was that they wouldn't leave the Eternal City without seeing all of its monuments which all had many years of History from the antiquity to the modern times.
Every day there was a different place for them to visit and learn about its history at the same time.
They couldn't also forgot to go and see Fontana di Trevi where they dropped a coin on its water according to the tradition that wanted all those who dropped coins in the fountain would visit the Eternal City one more time.
They even bought souvenirs to give them as presents to their friends and themselves of course. They weren't so big or expensive but still they were symbolic.
The best and most romantic part of their vacation was with no doubt the Colosseum which they keeped as a surprise after seeing the rest of the monuments.
Rome's most famous sightseeing worldwide was so fascinating especially now that they saw it in real life. It was exactly like they imagined it.
Few moments later Basch pulled Antigone closer to him despite of being usually shy and gave her such a deep and beautiful kiss. She responded with such excitement while she kissed him back.
Seeing this Nausicaa brought Pancrazio closer to her and gave him a kiss so lovely yet so deep. He also responded her kissed back with such sweetness.
"Money don't worth more than your love" Basch said to Antigone.
"You are more precious to me than any other treasure". she responded to him.
"With you, my life got such a better meaning" Nausicaa told Pancrazio.
"Having you in my life, i don't feel alone anymore" he answered her.
Luckily that everything went according to their plans so there wasn't any reason for them to worry.
If it was on their hands they could stay there forever but they knew it very well that they should return to their homes very soon.
They didn't lose their hope though. Maybe they could visit the Eternal City in the future again.
Undoubtedly they had such a gorgeous time in Rome but the day when they had to return back home finally came.
So they took the plane for Thessaloniki and when they arrived Nausicaa and Antigone went to the home they had there and allowed Basch and Pancrazio to stay until they booked flights to go back to their homes in Zurich and Genoa. They even gave eachother a promise to keep their contacts as better as they could.
While they were looking to the photos they took during all that time they were in the Eternal City they agreed that it was the most fascinating place they have been in their whole lives.
In other words the two couples had such wonderful vacation in Rome that was full of many beautiful and lovely memories from it.

From Rome to alone
Back to the boot - our last day in Rome all together. I had wanted my son C. to do a lot of the planning for this leg of the trip, and he really came through. He found this crazy fabulous apartment we stayed in. But his best effort turned out to be our early morning art project. Yes, that’s right - arts and crafts in Rome.
He’s always been a very creative person - his writing when he was in middle schools was off the scale good. (Journalism father wished he would have pursued that field). A few weeks before we left before this trip he bought a few blank canvasses and some paint. The next day I saw this really very good landscapes that were reproduced from earlier trips. He just oozes with creativity - but perhaps needs more confidence to do more with it.
Anyway, our Friday morning outline to a mosaic study was his idea. One of the best things about AirBnB is that they now list some fabulous experiences to do in every city. That’s where I did my Britain Blitz walk with Nathan in London - I’ll get there soon - and C. booked a morning with a young Italian craftswoman to teach us the art of Roman mosaics. Coming off our day in the Vatican and inspired by the overload of art, I think we all really had our creative juices flowing. We first learned about the ancient Roman techniques of mosaics before picking out our own patters. C. chose a delicate flower - challenging as it turned out. S. chose to do a swan. And as for me? Of course it had to be a Duck.
When this post goes up I’ll add a few pictures of our morning in the studio - it was a fabulously fun way to spend a morning in Rome!

FYI - the Duck’s name is Massimo
After lunch at a fun little Rome bistro we split up. S. And I went back to rest our minds and feet at the apartment, while C. found a Rome catacombs tour - another AirBnB experience - on the edge of the city near the beginning of the Appian Way. He’s always been interested in these underground grottos/crypts, etc. and this one was a highlight for him.
For our last night in Rome I found a very special restaurant - Margot. I thought it was going to be amazing because of the food - and it was. But the owner and wait staff made the occasion even more amazing. C. boasted to the waiter that he could speak a little Italian and that proved to be the runnning joke of the night. The owner, his wife, the other staff would come over and “test” his knowledge. The whole restaurant - full of locals, not tourists - actually played along! It was hilarious - and C. was an exceptionally good sport and participate in what he might have felt apprehensive about in the past. Is the butterfly emerging that we all hope and pray? I think so - and more about that in a bit.
We left the restraurant full, laughing, a little drunk - and a little sad too. It was the last night of our 8 day family trip. (Uh oh - just thinking about it again brought some mist to my eyes). I really love traveling with these two - they are simply marvelous company. That wasn’t always the case - especially with C. - but outside of that one day where we were all quiet it was one of the best travel experiences of my life. I pray they feel the same way.
We were up early the next day - the airport SUV was waiting for us at 5:30 AM - and we got to Rome’s lovely airport right on time. I’m going to spend time after this trip detailing how European travel is far, far, FAR superior to anything we have in the US. Our flight from Rome to London was only half full and we could all stretch out and get a little more sleep.
Landing at Heathrow marked the end of the first half of the trip. The kids would stay in International Terminal 5 for a couple of hours before their flight back to NY. I would go the opposite way, out to arrivals and start my solo portion of the journey. It was really hard saying goodbye to them after such an intense, happy family trip. But somehow I managed - but as noted in an earlier post my heart really felt empty.
I really do love traveling and that includes traveling alone. I usually seem to connect with people along the way - although not as much this trip so far - but the night is young..... I’m very blessed to have two children in my life who are smart, funny, capable people - and incredible travel partners to boot.

Synopsis
Arthur Curry, the unwilling ruler of Atlantis and King of the 7 Seas, finds himself caught between a floor globe continually ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, but dedicated to protecting the total world.
Development
In 2004, FilmJerk.com reported that Sunrise Entertainment's Alan and Peter Riche planned to deliver Aquaman to the massive display screen for Warner Bros. with Robert Ben Garant writing the screenplay. Even so, the movie fell via. In July 2009, it was described that Aquaman was in advancement at Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way. Warner chairman and CEO Barry Meyer explained that the Aquaman film was in improvement. A supply from Warner Bros. instructed The Wrap that they had been discussing the possibilities, with the point out of far more Man of Metal movies as properly as a Superman/Batman movie, a Question Girl film, and an Aquaman movie.[28][29][30] Geoff Johns advised Range that Aquaman is a priority character for the business. It was announced on August twelve, 2014, that Warner Bros. had employed screenwriters Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad to pen two different scripts for an forthcoming Aquaman movie. The movie was being developed on dual tracks, meaning that two scripts have been composed, a single by Beall and 1 by Johnstad, but only the better version would move ahead. On April 10, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter described that James Wan was the frontrunner to direct the film. In June 2015, Wan was verified to immediate the film and forget the screenplay by Johnstad. On November twelve, 2015, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick was hired to compose the script, even so it was unclear whether he would be creating a individual script or working with Wan. It was then exposed that preceding script ideas had been scrapped and that equally Wan and Johns planned to move forward with a new script written by screenwriter Will Beall. Later on, Johnson-McGoldrick was brought back again to the venture to operate on a rewrite of Beall's script. On March 2016, it was announced that the occasions of Aquaman will be established right after Justice League. Wan confirmed later on Twitter that cinematographer Don Burgess, who beforehand labored with Wan on The Conjuring 2, will provide as cinematographer for Aquaman. Pre-production commenced in Australia in late November 2016.
Casting
On Oct 20, 2014, in an interview with ComicBook.com, Jason Momoa unveiled that the Justice League movie would be coming initial and that is what they had been planning for, and he failed to know if the solo Aquaman movie would appear before or right after Justice League. He believed it may be the origin, exactly where Aquaman came from. Warner Bros. announced Aquaman as a part of the DC Extended Universe, with Jason Momoa starring. In December 2014, it was revealed that Momoa experienced signed a four-image deal with the studio and DC, and he needed Zack Snyder to immediate the solo Aquaman movie. On January thirteen, 2016, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Amber Read entered negotiations to enjoy the feminine guide function of Mera, Aquaman's really like desire her casting was confirmed two months later on.

How Cement Mixers Work
In addition to the mixing energy applied to the fresh concrete (i.e. shearing during mixing), the shear history after mixing is also important. This applies especially to binder rich concretes like the different types of high performance concrete (HPC). With this in mind, the shear rate is analyzed inside a drum of a concrete tank truck. The objective is to better understand the effect of transport of fresh concrete, from the ready mix plant to the building site. The analysis reveals the effect of different drum charge volume and drum rotational speed. Also, the effect of yield stress and plastic viscosity is investigated. The work shows that the shear rate decreases in an exponential manner with increasing drum charge volume. It is also shown that for a given drum speed, the shear rate decreases both with increasing plastic viscosity and yield stress.
Since civilizations first started to build, the human race has sought materials that bind stones into solid formed mass. After the discovery of Portland cement in 1824 (year of patent), concrete has become the most commonly used structural material in modern civilizations. The quality of the concrete structure is of course dependent on the quality of each constituent used in the concrete mix. However, this is not the only controlling factor. The quality also depends very much on the rheological properties of the fresh concrete during placement into the formwork [1]. That is, the concrete must be able to properly flow into all corners of the mold or formwork to fill it completely, with or without external consolidation depending on workability class. Tragic events may sometimes be traced back to concrete of unsuitable consistency resulting in, for example, coldjoint and honeycombing. Therefore, one of the primary criteria for a good concrete structure is that the fresh concrete exhibits satisfactory rheological properties during casting [1]. The use of simulation of flow to analyze such behavior is something that has been increasing in popularity for the last decade [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]. In 2014, a RILEM state-of-the art report (TC 222-SCF) was made specifically on this subject [10]. Here, such method is used to analyze the shear rate inside a concrete truck mixer for a wide range of cases. Previously in [11], such simulation was reported for the case of yield stress 50 Pa and plastic viscosity 50 Pa ⋅s, in which the aim was to verify a special truck mixer simulator.
In addition to the energy applied during mixing (i.e. shearing during mixing) [12], [13], [14], the shear history after mixing is also important [15], [16], [17]. This applies especially for binder rich concretes like the (rich) high performance concrete (HPC). This is due to the influence that the binder exerts on the concrete as a whole in terms of thixotropic- and structural breakdown behavior (these two terms are well explained in [18]). The rheological state of the binder depends heavily on the shear rate and especially on its history [15], [16], [17]. That is, in a highly agitated system (high shear rate), the cement particles will disperse, making the overall fresh concrete more flowable. While in a slowly agitated system, the cement particles will coagulate and thus thicken the overall fresh concrete.
The rheological properties of the fresh concrete depends on the proportions of each constituent as well as on their quality. However, as is apparent from the above paragraph, conditions like the shear rate during transport can play a major role on final workability. That is, a concrete batch with seemingly target rheological behavior at the ready mix plant can become unsuitable at the building site due to thixotropic thickening, caused by insufficient agitation during transport (i.e. low shear rate). The decrease in the slump during transport in truck mixer can be up to 90 mm, which corresponds to a deviation of one and a half consistency class [11]. Such could lead to the refusal of acceptance, or in the case of acceptance, make successful casting in awkward sections or through congested reinforcement difficult, resulting for example in honeycombing [1], [11].
In this work, the shear rate is analyzed inside the drum of a concrete fuel tank truck. This is done to better understand the potential effect of transport, from the ready mix plant to the building site, in terms of the concrete final rheological state. From Section 1.2, a higher shear rate will imply increased dispersion of the cement particles and thus more flowable concrete during the casting phase. Likewise, a lower shear rate will imply insufficient agitation, increased thixotropic rebuild and thus stiffer concrete during casting.
Because the shear rate within the drum is highly non-uniform and time dependent, meaning , a two step integration is most necessary to generate quantifiable values for analysis and comparison, which is shown later. The final outcome is given by and is simply referred to as “shear rate”. Here, this shear rate is analyzed as a function of drum rotational speed f = 0.03, 0.07, 0.11, 015, 019 and 0.23 rps (revolutions per second) and drum charge volume V = 2.6 m3, 5.4 m3 and 8.2 m3. In addition to this, the effect of yield stress τ0 = 0, 150 and 300 Pa and plastic viscosity μ = 25, 75 and 125 Pa ⋅s, is analyzed.
The simulation software used in this work is the OpenFOAM. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) and available at http://openfoam.org, without charge or annual fee of any kind. The benefits of using a GNU GPL licensed code rather than a closed commercial code, is that the user has always a full access to the source code, without any restriction, either to understand, correct, modify or enhance the software. Here, this is a highly desirable feature since a custom made solver is used for the current analysis. The software OpenFOAM is written in C++. As such, an object-oriented programming approach is used in the creation of data types (fields) that closely mimics those of mathematical field theory [19]. For the code parallelization and communication between processors, the domain decomposition method is used with the Message Passing Interface, or MPI [20]. In OpenFOAM, the collocated mesh system (in Cartesian coordinates) is applied in conjunction with the finite volume method (FVM).
The mesh in Fig. 1 is generated with a native OpenFOAM mesh utility called blockMesh. To investigate the mesh dependency of the numerical result, two different mesh densities (or mesh resolutions) are used, namely 58,888 and 372,568 cells, which are shown in the left and right illustrations of Fig. 1, respectively. For the former case, 88% of the cells are hexahedra, while it is 99% for the latter case. In either case, the remaining cells consist of prisms, tetrahedra and polyhedra. In the end of the mesh generation, its quality is checked with another native OpenFOAM utility, named checkMesh.
The internal dimensions shown to the left and right in Fig. 1 are identical and were directly measured at the local concrete premixing plant: the internals consists of two helix shaped blades, in which the blade thickness is roughly 8 mm, while the height is about 430 mm. The space between two adjacent blades is 620 mm on the average. As shown in Fig. 1, all these numbers vary as a function of the location within the drum. These number also change as a function of time, depending on drum usage. That is, the concrete wears and tears the internals of the drum with time.
Decrease of availability of fossil fuels and environment issues, push research towards the development of high efficiency power trains for vehicles that transport people, goods and mobile operating machines, like the concrete 5cbm mixer truck considered in this paper. Conventional concrete 3cbm mixer truck use diesel engine to move the truck and a hydraulic system which keep spinning the concrete drum. A hybrid powertrain based on battery-powered electrical drives can replace the conventional hydraulic system assuring an efficiency improvement. Furthermore, thanks to the reversibility of the electrical drives, it is possible to recover kinetic energy during the braking phases of the truck. Aim of this paper is to study and develop a hybrid powertrain for the concrete mixer drum. The study is based on a full energetic model of the vehicle developed for sizing the components and designing the control strategies. A model of the conventional hydraulic 8cbm mixer truck has also been proposed in order to evaluate the benefit introduced by the proposed hybrid system. Simulation models have been validated comparing experimental data collected on a conventional mixer truck in different operating conditions.
Most construction equipment is easy to understand. Cranes move things up and down. Dump trucks load up, move out and unload. Bulldozers push and graders grade. The one exception to this is the humble cement mixer, beloved by children, hated by in-a-hurry drivers, and misunderstood by most people outside the cab of the 30,000-pound (13,608-kilogram) behemoths.
While concrete has been around in one form or another since before the Romans built the Appian Way, the transit mixer is a child of the 20th century. But recent invention or not, the mixer is here to stay.
The misunderstanding begins with the name. What people refer to as a cement mixer is known in the construction industry as a concrete mixer and comes in a large number of types, sizes and configurations to handle the many tasks set before it each day. That need to fill so many roles means the machine is dynamic, changing shape and form as the needs of the people using concrete change as well.
In this article we'll examine some of the major types of mixers, from the traditional drum-shaped ready-mix transit mixer to the less-common but growing in popularity volumetric mixer, essentially a concrete plant on wheels. How cement mixers work and why they work the way they do is a fascinating combination of old and new technology. You'll never see a cement mixer the same way again.
But before we begin, let's clarify the difference between cement and concrete. In baking terms, the difference between concrete and cement is the difference between flour and a loaf of bread. Concrete is a generic term for a mix of aggregate -- usually stone or gravel, water and cement. Modern cement is a complex blend of finely ground minerals, and goes by the generic name of "portland." Concrete is made by combining the three ingredients in a mixer, whether that mixer is stationary or driving down the road, and the water is absorbed by the cement, which then binds the aggregate together, creating concrete.

The world is loaded up with such a wide assortment of awesome goals and lovely places to visit, it very well may be very hard to accumulate a rundown of the best ones. Considering an explorer who, out of the blue, has never walked outside their old neighborhood, where might be the primary spots they may visit?
For additional thoughts on where to go and what to see, read our rundown of the top spots to visit on the planet
1. Machu Picchu, Peru

Found high in the Andes piles of Peru, Machu Picchu is currently accepted to have been a consecrated illustrious retreat for the Incan rulers. Worked in the fifteenth century AD and relinquished not exactly 100 years after the fact, the remote site keeps on stunning with its impeccably joined, mortarless, mind-boggling stonework. Colossal multi-ton squares of stone are impeccably gotten together with one another, without the utilization of mortar or concrete.
The excursion to Machu Picchu normally begins in the mountain city of Cusco, which was the capital city of the Inca Empire. Cusco is a captivating spot to investigate make certain to put in a couple of days there previously or after your Machu Picchu experience.
It’s conceivable to climb the Inca Trail from Cusco to Machu Picchu. The full climb takes five days, however, you can likewise begin nearer and do a one-, a multi-day climb along the path. A great many people take the train from Cusco, which takes around three and a half hours.

The Right Stuff Disney+ TV Series Release Date Revealed with New Trailer
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
In an interesting turn of events, National Geographic’s television series adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff became a Disney+ streaming offering, reviving the seemingly-abandoned cultural attribute of wonder and optimism.
Nat Geo, which went into development on the 8-episode television adaptation of The Right Stuff back in 2017, made the move this past May to export its scripted original to Disney+, setting a fall release window. The series will, of course, live up as the namesake of Wolfe’s 1979 novel and director Philip Kaufman’s iconic 1983 movie by chronicling the Space Race-era story of NASA’s 1958-1963 Project Mercury, specifically the lives of the pioneering astronauts who endeavored to reach farther than ever past the atmosphere, becoming celebrities in what could be considered America’s first reality show.
In the latest news, Disney+’s The Right Stuff now has a specific release date charted. You can also check out the just-dropped trailer for the series just below.
The Right Stuff Release Date
The Right Stuff will premiere in the streaming television orbit of Disney+ on Friday, October 9.
Interestingly enough, The Right Stuff series release date will arrive only a few weeks before the 37th anniversary of the four-Oscars-accruing 1983 film, which hit theaters on October 21, 1983.
The Right Stuff Trailer
The trailer for The Right Stuff has arrived, chock-full of feels-inspiring footage recreating the exploits of brave individuals who went to space utilizing technology exponentially dwarfed by your desktop solitaire game.
Just below is a behind-the-scenes teaser for the series, dropped a few months prior.
The Right Stuff Details
The series stars Patrick J. Adams (Suits) as Major John Glenn, a family man driven by principles, and Jake McDorman (What We Do in the Shadows, Lady Bird) as Lieutenant Commander Alan Shepard, each man legendary test pilots in their own right who are set to embark on a series of missions that will alter the course of humanity upward. They are joined by a cast of Mercury participants in Micah Stock as Deke Slayton, Aaron Staton as Wally Schirra, Michael Trotter as Gus Grissom, Colin ODonoghue as Gordon Cooper and James Lafferty as Scott Carpenter
As Courteney Monroe, president, National Geographic Global Television Networks, expresses of the move in a statement:
This true story of scientific innovation and human perseverance could not be more timely. National Geographic’s The Right Stuff is an aspirational story about exploration, ambition, determination and resilience and reminds us that human beings can achieve the extraordinary when united by a common purpose. This series provides a compelling behind-the-scenes look at the flawed, but heroic Mercury 7 astronauts and we are thrilled that it has found its perfect home on Disney+.”
To which Ricky Strauss, president, Content & Marketing, Disney+, adds:
“As our audiences around the world turn to Disney+ to find inspiration and optimism, we believe the true-life heroism of the Mercury 7 will showcase the tenacity of the human spirit and inspire a new generation to reach for the stars. The wonderful team of storytellers at National Geographic, Warner Horizon Scripted Television and Appian Way have crafted a compelling and entertaining tale and we are honored to give it a global home as the first scripted Disney+ original series from National Geographic.”
Mark Lafferty (Castle Rock, Halt and Catch Fire) serves as showrunner and executive producer here, joined by Chris Long (The Americans, The Mentalist), who directed the first episode. The series was initially shepherded by Michael Hampton of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Thus, DiCaprio (who’s not in the cast,) will represent his shingle as an executive producer, joined in that capacity by Jennifer Davisson. They will be joined by executive producers in Will Staples and Howard Korder, along with consulting producers in Thelma Schoonmaker and Danny Strong, and Hampton is onboard as a co-producer.
The Right Stufff’s move from Nat Geo to Disney+ mirrors one made with docuseries The World According to Jeff Goldblum, which was made available upon the platform’s November 12, 2019 launch. However, The Right Stuff clearly represents the major migration of a peak television project that features space-program-esque ambitions and a packed cast, taking on the overwhelming task of—not screwing the pooch—living up to director Philip Kaufman’s iconic 1983 film adaptation of the same name, which garnered an array of Oscar nominations, along with wins for sound, effects, film editing and notably Best Original Score for Bill Conti (of Rocky fame).
