FR4 Thermal Conductivity management for LEDs

Just like the light-emitting diode, which for decades served exclusively as an indicator lamp, PCB has also left its shadowy existence and has rapidly advanced to a multifunctional element within an electronic system. It, therefore, has to withstand high currents and ensure the cooling of high-clocked, but heat-producing processors and heat-dissipating power components, which brought us to today's topic- FR4 thermal conductivity.

1. Comparison of a conventional two-board solution with FR4 / copper combination

As UHB LEDs (Ultra High Brightness LEDs) with up to ten or more watts per housing and LED arrays with many LEDs placed closely next to each other are being used more and more, the question of heat dissipation is becoming more and more pressing.

This applies in particular since, unlike incandescent lamps, light-emitting diodes only emit a negligible part of the heat loss; practically everything goes the way of heat conduction.

Of course, there are solutions, for example, ceramic carriers or IMS PCB (insulated metal substrates) with thick aluminum cores. However, these are very expensive in comparison to classic FR4 PCB boards, and a second board is usually required to make to accommodate driver electronics.

A thermally optimized layer structure also ensures rapid heat spreading and thus supports the entire thermal concept. In the case of very small LED housings, filled microvias ensure a direct metallic connection to heat-conducting copper elements, which can be attached approximately 60 μm below the top layer of the circuit board.

2. Thermal properties of metal core boards and FR4 thermal conductivity with embedded copper

Compared to Thermovias, which are placed directly under heat pads, for example, it is possible to solder filled microvias without any problems. Based on various empirical studies, Häusermann was able to gain all kinds of knowledge in the areas of thermal management and high current on the printed circuit board. The main advantage of HSMtec compared to alternative solutions is the use of inexpensive standard FR4 material in addition to manufacturing in the standard manufacturing process. This represents a sensible alternative to circuit board solutions that provide full-area copper layers up to 500 µm thick, or to cost-intensive IMS solutions that use massive aluminum cores as heat carriers instead of the usual base material deploy.

The design allows large amounts of heat and/or high currents of up to 500A to be conducted directly inside the circuit board. In addition, the entire architecture does not require cables, connectors or other mechanical connections. This not only increases the reliability of the application but also its lifespan. The properties and characteristics of FR4 thermal conductivity materials ensure great versatility at an affordable price. For this reason, they are often used to manufacture PCB boards. So it is not unusual for us to dedicate an article to them on our blog.

FR-4 is a standard set by the NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) for a composite of hardened epoxy resin and fiberglass fabric. The code 94V-0 is on all FR-4 circuit boards. It ensures that fire does not spread and goes out again quickly if the material catches fire. The glass transition temperature (Tg) for High TG or HiTG is between 115 and 200 ° C depending on the manufacturing method and the resins used. FR-4 uses bromine, a chemical element, and so-called refractory halogen. It replaces G-10, another composite material that is less fire-resistant in most applications. FR-4 also offers a good ratio between fire resistance and weight. FR-4 High CTI: The Comparative Tracking Index (tracking resistance) is over 600 volts. FR-4 without copper foil: Ideally suited for insulation boards, models and circuit board carriers. What holds our world together

What is "base material"?

The individual components of the typical base material are adhesive, a backing material and the conductive layer. The FR4, the most widely used base material, is made of adhesive Epoxy resin and the base material made of twisted glass fibrils, which are woven into a glass fabricate. Technical characteristics of FR4 thermal conductivity

The standard value for FR4 is 130 °, higher Tg values are 150 ° or 175 °, depending on the material manufacturer. In general, "Tg" is misleadingly translated as "glass transition temperature". What is meant, however, is that the epoxy resin structure becomes soft and elastic as soon as the Tg value is reached and that the Z-axis expansion consequently increases considerably.

Error events are then cracks in the contacted vias and/or tears of the internal conductor tracks from the via sleeves. Delaminations can also occur which leads to a partial dissolution of the pressed material composite. The consequence is usually a failure of the module. The continuous operating temperature of a module with FR4 material should not exceed 95 to 100 ° C. A higher Tg value does not increase the continuous operating temperature of a module. The continuous operating temperature essentially depends on the epoxy resin matrix and should not exceed 95 to 100 ° for FR4 material. Another parameter is the Td value. "Td" stands for "Time to Decomposition" and describes the temperature value at which the material has lost 5% of its mass due to outgassing/evaporation.

Since the introduction of SMD technology, the requirements for the base material have increased. The reduction in the design of SMD components also leads to a reduction in the SMD areas on the circuit board, because otherwise, reliable soldering is not possible (i.e. twisted components, tombstoning). When an SMD pad gets smaller, the area with which this pad adheres to the circuit board also becomes smaller. Simple mechanical loads, vibration and braking or acceleration forces can cause the component to tears. Reflow soldering additionally reduces the adhesion between the SMD pad and the circuit board by up to 75%, depending on the base material type, circuit board surface and number of reflow cycles. Unfortunately, the measures to achieve a high Tg in return often lead to a reduction in copper adhesion. With standard material, pull-off forces of around 2 N / mm can be found, which can drop to 0.8 N / mm with high-Tg material.

MANILA – The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) said on Friday the degraded operations of the LRT Line 2 (LRT-2) will resume by early next week while the last three stations in the eastern end of the rail line will be out of commission for an estimated nine months.

In a phone interview, Lyn Janeo, LRTA public relations officer, said multiple systems in the rail line are undergoing testing to ensure its stability and safety for passengers before resuming degraded operations from Cubao to Recto stations and back.

“Kasi we want to ensure na okay yung telecommunications namin, yung signaling namin, yung power, tapos yung mga trains okay lahat (Because we want to ensure that our telecommunications, signaling, power, and trains are all okay),” Janeo said.

She, however, said the Anonas, Katipunan, and Santolan stations will be out of commission for about nine months due to severe damage on the local power rectifier (transformer) substation, which supplied power in the area during the fire.

“Kasi heavily damaged yung rectifier substation natin--ito kasi yung nagsu-supply ng power sa tatlong stations na 'yon (Because our rectifier substation was heavily damaged—this supplies power to those three stations),” Janeo said.

The long wait before the full operation of the rail line, she said, is due to the lengthy process of procuring replacement parts for the damaged substation from overseas.

“Magkakaroon tayo ng (We will have) procurement abroad, delivery, syempre (of course) insulation, testing, commissioning--medyo matagal na proseso din (it will be a long process),” Janeo said.

She added they will try to restore the operation in the three stations as soon as possible—with their target to restore full service in less than nine months.

“More or less mga (around) nine months pero we'll try our best na kung sakaling mapa-aga (but we’ll try our best to finish it earlier),” Janeo said.

In a message, LRTA administrator Reynaldo Berroya said the estimated cost of damages to the rail line was about PHP428 million.

He added that engineers from the United States of America who had been previously commissioned to design and install the rectifier substations of the LRT-2 will return to the Philippines to help in the ongoing investigation.

Many netizens aired their concerns through social media, one of whom was @iAmSuperCis, who said her previous travel time of 20 to 25 minutes from Katipunan to Recto through the LRT-2 will increase by about an hour.

“Approx. 9 months madadagdagan ang travel time ko ng 1 hr (Katipunan to Recto only takes 20-25 mins via lrt2) Any change we will have free rides from Katipunan to Cubao?,” she said in a Twitter post.

While the LRT-2 is in degraded/limited operations, the LRTA said the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Philippine Coast Guard will continue to provide free bus rides from the Santolan depot to Cubao station.

“During peak hours 'yun. In the morning that's 7 to 9 a.m., and in the afternoon that's 5 to 7 p.m.,” Janeo said.

In a post on Twitter, the LRT-2 said these buses will only pick up passengers in LRT-2 stations.

On Thursday around 11:33 a.m., the LRT-2 suspended its operation due to a fire caused by tripped power rectifiers between Katipunan and Anonas stations.

Berroya said the LRTA’s primary concern was to determine the extent of the damage to the rail line to ensure the resumption of operations in as little time as possible and for the safety of the LRT-2’s estimated 200,000 daily passengers. (PNA)

Mixed H/He bursts in SAX J1748.9-2021 during the spectral change of its 2015 outburst. (arXiv:1810.05490v1 [astro-ph.HE])

SAX J1748.9-2021 is a transiently accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar. It is also known as an X-ray burster source discovered by Beppo-SAX. We analysed the persistent emission and type-I X-ray burst properties during its 2015 outburst. The source varied from hard to soft state within half day. We modeled the broad-band spectra of the persistent emission in the 1 - 250 keV energy band for both spectral states using the quasi-simultaneous INTEGRAL and Swift data. The broad-band spectra are well fitted by an absorbed thermal Componization model, compps, in a slab geometry. The best-fits for the two states indicate significantly different plasma temperature of 18 and 5 keV and the Thomson optical depth of 3 and 4, respectively. In total, 56 type-I X-ray bursts were observed during the 2015 outburst, of which 26 detected by INTEGRAL in the hard state, 25 by XMM-Newton in the soft state, and 5 by Swift in both states. As the object transited from the hard to the soft state, the recurrence time for X-ray bursts decreased from $\approx 2$ to $\approx1$ hr. The relation between the recurrence time, $ \Delta t_{\rm rec}$, and the local mass accretion rate per unit area onto the compact object, $\dot m$, is fitted by a power-law model, and yielded as best fit at $\Delta t_{\rm rec} \sim \langle \dot{m} \rangle^{-1.02\pm0.03}$ using all X-ray bursts. In both cases, the observed recurrence times are consistent with the mixed hydrogen/helium bursts. We also discuss the effects of type-I X-ray bursts prior to the hard to soft transition.

Zuluk – The silent valley:

I never see a silent valley like Zuluk or Dzuluk. The calmness of this valley is so still that you can even hear your own heartbeats. The coldness dipped into the deep mist and the silence of the valley create an enigmatic ambiance that attracted me the most to explore it more intensely. The valley has its own charm that is devoid of modern civilizations like the connectivity of the internet, phone calls, and television. The only sound you can hear is the music of the cool mountain breeze complemented by dangling off the leaves, the flapping of the wings of the birds in harmony, and the melancholic tune of the afternoon mist.

Enigmatic Zuluk.

Location:

This mysterious valley is the virgin destination of the old silk route of the East Sikkim. This is situated in the Eastern Himalaya at an altitude of 10,000ft from the sea level. The hamlet is surrounded by the deep green Himalayan forest enriched with varieties type of flora and fauna. Zuluk or Dzuluk or Jhuluk is the transit camp of the old silk route that connects Kalimpong of the India to Lassa of the Tibet. In the past, the people, come from the Tibet and China for trade, halted their night at Zuluk. Now, it is the transit camp of the Indian army of Indo-China border. The jarring noise of the military trucks only breaks the tranquillity of the village.

How to reach Zuluk?

It is a small village of East Sikkim, close to the town Rangoli. It takes approx. 4 hrs (91km) from Gangtok. If you want to come from Siliguri, you can get the cabs from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station and the Bagdogra airport as well. In such cases, you have to prebook your car at 3000-4500Rs/per day charge. It takes 6-7 hours as the road condition is seriously bad. It’s better to choose travel agency or the tour operator who can arrange the silk route trip according to your interest for the first time traveler. There are various types of packages from 1-day hurricane trip to 4 days leisure trip. Please, follow my earlier post on the Old silk route trip plan to get the contacts of the various tour operators or to arrange the cabs for the trip.

A journey from Mankhim to Zuluk :

We came to Zuluk from Mankhim. This is the 3rd destination of our old silk route trip. The journey from Mankhim to Zuluk is an amazing experience. The land around the Zuluk is still in a pristine condition and immersed with the alpine vegetations with numerous waterfalls. Kuekhola falls is the biggest waterfalls among them.

We crossed a big forest territory just before the army area of Zuluk. The zig-zag roads of the silk route pass through this forest.We started to feel the deep jerk of frequent turning of the hairpin bend from here.

Permit:

As Dzuluk or Jhuluk is an army protected the area, you need to take Govt. permit to enter this valley. And the restricted zone continues throughout the silk route. You can get the permit from Rongoli town by the spending of 300Rs for two persons. Another permit you have to take by the spending of another 200 buck (Camera charges is 110Rs extra) for entering that forest territory. 4 copies of passport size photos and 2 photocopies of the Id proof (Not the PAN card) are mandatory to get the permit for the old silk route. Our driver Bhutia bhai took all the initiatives to issue the permit.

Where to stay?

You cannot find any luxurious and traditional hotels in Zuluk. The people of the village offer simple and eco-friendly Homestays, which are very close to nature. Our Homestay was very simple with the basic amenities, but the hospitability of the owners (we call her aunty) was amazing. We just felt that we were in our home and close to our mother. Aunty and her daughter-in-law always took care of our needs. Even, her daughter-in-law carried our two big trollies alone from the uphill to their home. That time, the temperature was very low and we felt very cold. Aunty always served us hot water (for washing and drinking) and warm dishes. Even she scolded my 5 years old son when he started nagging on eating foods and fed him the foods by her own hand. The dishes were awesome and very nicely cooked. I’ll never forget the warmth I got from her. I told her when I’ll come next time to see the snow in the winter, I’ll definitely stay in her Homestay. Here is the contact info for our Homestay.

Zuluk in my Eyes:

It around 2’Oclock of the afternoon, we arrived in Zuluk. After keeping luggage in the room of our Homestay, I just roamed around its campus. The area in front of our room was amazing. It was on the top of the hill and I found the panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas with its green vegetations and other valleys and villages. The Zuluk Hallypad and the military transit camp was clearly visible from that area. But, rest of the places were covered with the deep mask of the cloud. Aunty came to me and told that when the clouds disappear, the places like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Lava, Lolegaion, Gangtok can be seen clearly from this place. But, I missed it as the clouds conspired against me and never left its place during my stay.

The melancholic tune of the Afternoon:

After having lunch, I went outside and walked around the valley. The economic conditions of the people of this hamlet are not so well. The land is not good for plantation and farming. Tourism is the only source of their earning. The kids of the villages take their educations from Padamchen and stay at the school hostel as there are no transport services from the schools. Even there is no Monastery in the area around Zuluk. The population of the villages enriched with the Tibetan race and they have to go the Monasteries of Gangtok for performing their religious rituals and festivals.

I came back to our place in the evening and met other co-travelers, who were staying just beside our room. After chatting sometime we came to know that they are residing very close to our home in Kolkata. It was really great during traveling to find someone who is your native. We spent a cheerful evening with them.

A bright sunny morning:

After passing a cold night, we get up in the early morning. We had a plan to see the Sunrise on the Kanchenjunga from the Lungthung that was 4 km uphill from the Zuluk. But, my husband was not well that time. Hence, we dropped the plan for watching Sunrise at 4.30 am. But, early morning, we went for the sightseeing and reached the Thambi viewpoint of Lungthung. It was a clear morning and we saw a breathtaking beauty of the zig-zag roads ( Locally called “Bhulbhulaia) of the old silk route.

Some Important Tips:

The car takes extra 1000Rs to show the sunrise from the Lungthung viewpoint. Hence, I think it’s better to stay at the homestays near the viewpoints of Lungthung instead of Zuluk. You can see the splendid sunrise over the Mt. Kanchenjunga from your window.

Keep all the necessary medicines in your bag as there are no medicine shops and hospitals in the nearby area.

You have to carry cash in your wallet because you cannot find any bank or ATM in the surrounding places.

Don’t expect any internet connectivity and Phone calls. By any chance, if you get a signal on your phone, you are damn lucky.

The Woollens are necessary for any of the time over the years. Hence, you need to carry it.

If you want to see snow, visit Zuluk from December to March.
