I have creates a curated list of all FLOSS electrical engineering software here. Export Qucs RF schematics to KiCad layouts & OpenEMS scripts. You can program the Arduino directly from this software simulation,( it is) really impressive. The components are displayed in 3D in their real form. The screenshots below show the main schematic and data display area of the Qucs GUI on the lower right corner, the menus and icons at the upper part and the project. Pin 2 of the LM335 goes into analog pin A0 of the arduino. You did not mention which one are you referring to but people are usually looking for the VSM alternatives as it is a great software for simulating MCUs as well as AVR development board Arduino. This project shows how to use an Arduino Pro Mini as ISP (In Circuit Serial Programmer) device. Not only it is an inappropriate answer to the question but also in my humble opinion it is against the spirit of the Ubuntu community to use and promote proprietary Windows software.īut back to your question, Proteus has two famous products Proteus PCB which is an EDA suite (electronic design automation) and Proteus VSM for analog circuits and microcontroller (MCU) simulation. QUCS also can run natively in most operational systems. First of all sad to see some of the folks here are suggesting to use wine or a virtual machine.

Now your COM1 and COM2 should be virtually connected, I have shown how to connect the COM ports virtually in the below video.
In this window, select COM1 for first HC05 module and COM2 for second HC05 module.
Now click any HC-05 module and you will get a pop up window.
So, design a simple circuit as shown in below figure:.
If you haven't worked on Virtual Terminals then you should read How to use Virtual Terminal in Proteus.
Let's have a look at it working, so let's design a simple circuit and do the communication between these two Bluetooth modules.
That's why you can see in the above figure that only TXD and RXD are working while all others are not working.
As, I told earlier, we have just used the basic TX and RX pins of these Bluetooth modules.
Now select both of these modules and place them in your workspace and it will look like something as shown in below figure:.
Now open your Proteus software or restart it if its already open and search for Bluetooth and you will get something as shown in below figure:.
If you are new to Proteus 7 or 8 Professional, then you must have a look at How to add new Library in Proteus.
So, download these two files and place them in the library folder of your Proteus ISIS software.
In this rar file, you will find two files which are named as:.
So, first of all, download this Bluetooth Library for Proteus by clicking the below button:.

I will also add more Bluetooth modules in this library and will update it with time. These Bluetooth modules are not gonna accept AT Commands rite now as we haven't added much functionality in it but we are gonna add more soon. Other bloggers are welcome to share this Bluetooth Library for Proteus on their blogs but do mention our link as a respect to our efforts. I hope that one will also be interesting to read, if you have planned to start working on Bluetooth Module. I have also posted a tutorial in which I have done Arduino Bluetooth Communication using HC05 in hardware. Till now, there's no such Bluetooth Library designed for Proteus and we are the first developers of this awesome Bluetooth Library for Proteus. We use these modules for sending data through Bluetooth. I have designed two Bluetooth modules which are HC-05 and HC-06. Using this Library, now you can quite easily use Bluetooth modules in Proteus ISIS. Today, I am going to share a new Bluetooth Library for Proteus. You can start practicing by watching the videos of the several simulations I have done in the past, see below.Hello friends, hope you all are fine.

Name: AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODE File size: 23 MB Date added: May 7, 2014 Price: Free Operating system: Windows XP/Vista/7/8 Total downloads: 1294 Downloads last week: 89 If you download the Fatify app for free (designed by the same developer), you can even combine the images: you'll then have an old, fat image blinking and yawning at you. All you need to do is install the app on both devices, and the program walks you through the rest. The core interface of AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODE is very similar to other photo and video sharing apps. AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODE for Mac creates file archives using a proprietary compact binary file system called the AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODE Resource Archive or ARA. You can add captions here as well. Integrated sharing: After you've captured and edited your image or clip, you can export it in several different ways straight from the app. This only happens once, however, so it's not a major inconvenience. The age of the app's developer has gotten a lot of attention (he's only 15), but for a paid app, that's no excuse for having such an inconsistent difficulty curve, a partial English translation, and other rough edges in what's already an overpopulated genre. AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODE for Mac offers a solid choice for collectors looking to keep track of their DVDs, but its promise of dual language support falls far short. You can change opacity, alter colorations, change the edging, add a deeper reflection, and change the gradients, effectively altering the full look and feel of your dock. : We recommend skipping this app.AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODE is a social app that gathers all of your sharing and communication tools in one place, including video calls, text messages, and images. There were no user instructions available, but this was not necessary due to the easy-to-use interface and AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODEtions. From the overly long setup process and convoluted interface to the lack of direct interaction you have with other users, it can be frustrating in many instances. In addition to its clumsy controls, the lack of a user manual means much trial and error is required to discover all its features. The tiles all appear, then flip over and you must match them as quickly as possible for a high score, with score multipliers when you get combos. While AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODE and well designed, AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODE X for Mac's lack of support into the future means it is not the best option when it comes to browsing alternatives. An export button allows the output to be saved for later use, and a Preferences menu allows selection of a number of playback AUTOCAD 2013 PRODUCT KEY 001E1 ACTIVATION CODEs and speed of the reading. If you just want to look at all the news and info for a particular band, perform a search using the name of the band, touch the name from the search results, then you'll be brought to that bands info page. This app can help you lower your communication costs.

Free Software To Open Pcb File
Printed Circuit Boards are very crucial in Electronics circuit design and making, these PCB boards are acts as support base for the Electronic Elements & components and provides bias and signal path to the required components. Now a days growth of SMD (Surface Mount Device) and SMT (Surface Mount Technology) shrinks the electronic components size and makes more complex to the PCB design. Due to no pin hole terminals in SMD components two side of PCB board filled up with tracks and components.
Typically, free EDA software is poorly developed, or has restrictions on design size that render it useless for any real project. Not CircuitMaker - you get the full power of 16 signal + 16 plane layers, and no restrictions to the PCB dimensions. If you do not need dark current compensation you can remove the second photodiode and leave the pads open. The software reads the data using a clock which is driven by the ADC. The clock frequency is the same as the sampling rate (20MSPS). How to open PCB files. If you cannot open the PCB file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports PCB among those that are installed on your device. A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application.
The Printed Circuit Board have copper tracks to connect the electronic components placed upon it, Different types of PCBs are,

Importing Your CAD Files
Importing your CAD files is easy with the Unisoft software! The 'SMART OPEN' feature is your CAD EXPERT that does all the work for you finding and sorting out all the proper files in your project folder!
TO USE 'SMART OPEN': From the Unisoft software click FILE from the main menu, click SMART OPEN and a new window opens. In the new window browse to and select the directory that your project CAD or Gerber files are located in. A new window opens and select one of the files presented and your PC Board will be displayed.
The SMART OPEN feature looks at all the files for your project in the folder you select and then presents you with only the correct PC Board, CAD and Gerber files that can be imported into the Unisoft software with the most desirable CAD files at the top of the list.
MORE ABOUT CAD FILE IMPORTING:
The Unisoft software can import the wide assortment of CAD, Gerber, BOM and XY rotation files that EMS/CEM and OEM electronic manufactures encounter. Unisoft has a set of the best ECAD, Gerber and BOM importers in the world today. This software developed over the last 30 years imports all types of ECAD, MCAD and BOM formats.
Unisoft imports the ASCII text files created by CAD systems and supports revision levels dating back to the 1980's and this can be important because older versions of CAD systems are still in use and need to be supported. For example the PADS ASCII output .ASC file format dates back to the 1980's and Unisoft supports virtually all the variations PADS created through the years within that format.
Unisoft SMART OPEN feature outlined previously above, will scan all files in a folder and will automatically detect the CAD files which have correct content for importing into the Unisoft software. So for example if you have a folder containing 40 assorted CAD, Gerber, BOM and Drawing files for a PC Board project use the Unisoft SMART OPEN feature by clicking FILE from the main menu then click SMART OPEN and point to the directory folder with the files and click OK and you will be presented with a list of the CAD files you can import. In general look for at a minimum 'PCB pin x-y' in the field 'Contains this type of data'. If the file contains 'PCB pin x-y' data then usually with the Unisoft software this will be sufficient data to program your Assembly, AOI inspection and selective Soldering equipment; and also create process assembly sheets, kitting labels, costing reports, do first article and general inspection.
If you are having trouble finding the right type of CAD file to import into the Unisoft software then the table below lists PC Board CAD, Gerber and mechanical CAD file formats that maybe imported into the Unisoft software. You can use this table to match up the correct CAD file required to be imported. After you have installed the Unisoft software full samples of most of the CAD formats listed in the table below can be found by default in the directory c:program filesunisoftcad-import-file-samples-etc or c:program files(x86)unisoftcad-import-file-samples-etc . In that directory the sample files start with SAMPLE_ and the CAD System is in the name of the file, for example the file SAMPLE_PADS.ASC is a full sample of the PADS CAD system ASCII file. If you are having trouble finding the right type of CAD file then use these samples to match them to the CAD files your CAD department or your clients may have available for processing with the Unisoft software. For example if your company or client uses the OrCAD CAD system to design their PC Boards and they have not sent you the correct files then use the table below to have them send you the desired files. From the table below under the field 'CAD system' look for OrCAD and you will find two listings. Next under the field 'File label or type' you will find 'Min File' and 'GENCAD'. Under the field 'Contains this type of data' you will find that both have the same listing of 'PCB pin x-y,netlist,trace data'. The field 'Contains this type of data' indicates the PC Board data types contained in the file and usually the more types listed the better. In the case of OrCAD both the 'Min File' and 'GENCAD' files have full 'Contains this type of data' listings of 'PCB pin x-y,netlist,trace data' and either one will work fine for importing into the Unisoft software. Next look at the field 'Standard extension' and in the case of OrCAD they are .MIN and .CAD and if you have either of these files available you are ready to go; if not then request them from your client or your CAD department and do this by forwarding them the samples of the file formats you need and these samples are available by default in the directory c:program filesunisoftcad-import-file-samples-etc or c:program files(x86)unisoftcad-import-file-samples-etc . In the case of OrCAD the two files you would send them would be sample_orcad.min and sample_GENCAD.cad and these files should aid them in matching the correct file type you need.
STANDARD CAD FILES: Note that many CAD systems in addition to exporting their native format may export industry standard CAD formats such as GENCAD, GENCAM, FABMASTER, IPC-D-356, IPC-2581, etc. In most cases these files can be used in place of the native CAD files and are importable into the Unisoft software.
GERBER FILES: When CAD files are not available then Gerber files are often the only files available to Contract Manufacturers and OEM's. The Unisoft software can quickly translate these files into your required manufacturing files (see note 2 below).
X/Y CENTER & ROTATION FILES: When CAD files are not available then X/Y center & rotation files are often the only files available to Contract Manufacturers and OEM's. The Unisoft software can quickly translate these files into your required manufacturing files (see note 7 below).

The CAD and Gerber file listings above are provided for informational purposes only. Unisoft is not responsible for any problems encountered with the usage of this information.
Full samples of most of the CAD formats in the table above can be downloaded by clicking this link https://www.unisoft-cim.com/download/cad_samples.zip. After the download is complete you will find the CAD samples in the file CAD_SAMPLES.ZIP.
BINARY FILES: The Unisoft software imports the ASCII files the ECAD systems export but it does not import their binary files. Binary PCB database files are the ECAD companies own proprietary binary format. These binary file formats are normally not public or documented and my violate copyrights. Also as an ECAD company releases new versions of it's software their binary format may change and it would be virtually impossible to modify the Unisoft software to accommodate these changes in a timely manner. For these reasons the Unisoft software does not import the binary files directly and only imports the standard ASCII files these ECAD systems export. TIP: If you try to open your CAD file with a TEXT editor and the characters are not standard ASCII text characters then it is most likely a binary file and not the ASCII CAD file and the Unisoft software will not be able to import it!
Note 1a:CAD files without explicitly defined component rotations: This CAD file does not have explicitly defined component rotations.
This CAD file has component pin information but no usable data about component rotations and in these cases Unisoft automatically calculates component rotations using standard zero degree package orientations.
Note 1b:CAD files with explicitly defined component rotations: This CAD file has explicitly defined component rotations.
This CAD file contains rotation information. When a CAD file is imported into the Unisoft software were the component rotations are explicitly defined in the CAD file then Unisoft assigns these explicitly defined rotations to the components.
In some cases it may be desirable to modify these explicilty defined component rotations. If this is the case then the RESET ROTATION feature can be used to change the rotation of the component package shapes in CAD files that have explicitly defined rotations. When the RESET ROTATION feature is used then the Unisoft software automatically calculates component rotations using standard zero degree package orientations.
Note 2:Gerber: Gerber data is basically a drawing file of the PC Boards pad information. Most of the systems listed above gerber data files. Gerber does not contain component, pin or netlist information. Wherever possible, from the table above, try to obtain CAD files with pin x-y,netlist,trace data. However as is the case with virtually all Contract Electronics Manufacturers [EMS/CEM] often the only data their clients provide are the gerber files. In this case the Unisoft GERBER-CONNECTION menu is used to quickly turn these raw Gerber files into intelligent data to program your Assembly, AOI inspection, ATE Test and selective Soldering equipment; and also create process assembly sheets, kitting labels, costing reports, do first article and general inspection.
Gerber files are exported by hundreds of different CAD and software systems. The first few lines of the GERBER file will look something like the sample below.
There is also a full sample of a GERBER file on your installation directory of the Unisoft software and by default it would be c:program filesunisoftcad-import-file-samples-etcsample-gerber.ger or c:program files(x86)unisoftcad-import-file-samples-etcsample-gerber.ger.
Note 3:Importing Cadence Allegro CAD files into the Unisoft software: Cadence Allegro is usually less straight forward then the other CAD systems in generating the necessary ASCII file that is then imported into the Unisoft software. The Allegro CAD system requires an extraction program in order to get the data out of the system. The extraction script exports ASCII files and therefore anyone needing PCB data from the Allegro database needs to use the Cadence Extraction program. Outlined below are two options to create the ASCII file.
Please note that the main Allegro binary database has a .BRD extension. The .BRD is in Allegro's own proprietary binary format that is not public or documented and Unisoft does not import this file directly. The Unisoft software imports the standard ASCII files this database can export.
Option #1 - Some Allegro systems (NT version for example) will allow you to export out an IPC-D356 ASCII file. IPC-D356 is created directly from the export menu on the Allegro CAD system and the Unisoft software can then import the IPC-D356 file.
To export IPC-D356 from the Allegro software click the EXPORT MENU then click IPC-D356 and the resultant .IPC file created can be imported into the Unisoft software. To import the .IPC file into the Unisoft software first start the Unisoft software and click the main FILE menu then select SMART OPEN and select the directory where the .IPC file is located, then select the .IPC file and click OK. A window will open, click OK and the PCB will be displayed.
Option #2 - Some customers that use ALLEGRO have been able to export the standard file format from ALLEGRO known as the Fabmaster 'extraction script'. We recommend this file format because it contains a large amount of the PC Board detail (pins, netlist, traces, etc.).
To export Fabmaster 'extraction script' from the Allegro software you need to download and run the skill file script to extract the Fabmaster 'extraction script' CAD data. The licensed Cadence Allegro user can go to 'Sourcelink' on the Cadence website and download the Fabmaster skill file to extract Fabmaster 'extraction script' CAD data. The skill file should contain information on how it should be run. The resultant Fabmaster 'extraction script' CAD file created can be imported into the Unisoft software. To import the file you can use the SMART OPEN feature in the Unisoft software and the PCB will be displayed. The other option to import the file is to make sure the file name is .FAB then start the Unisoft software and click the main FILE menu then select OPEN and select the directory where the .FAB file is located. Next click the pull down menu next to 'LIST FILE TYPES' and select 'FabMaster Files (*.FAB)' then select the .FAB file and click OPEN and the PCB will be displayed.
The first few lines of the file will look something like this:
Note if you are using an older version of Unisoft before year 2016 the following may apply. Newer versions will detect these differences automatically: If you have an ASCII file similar in format to the one above 'A!XXX!YYY!ZZZ!' but it does not import into the Unisoft software with the above mentioned methods then first change the file extension to .VAL and try to import it into the Unisoft software. If that does not work then change the file extension to .VA2 and try to import it into the Unisoft software. The format above 'A!XXX!YYY!ZZZ!' comes in many variations so if you still have issues then please contact Unisoft.
Note 4:Importing EAGLE PCB files into the Unisoft software: Note that Eagle (CadSoft) was acquired by Autodesk in 2016 and so the export information below may change as the product is integrated into Autodesk.. ---- EAGLE PCB system users can export GenCAD, IPCD356 and Fabmaster files that can then be imported into the Unisoft software. The Eagle PCB system uses 'User Language Programs' scripts to export data out. To download these user contributed scripts for GenCAD, IPCD356 and Fabmaster go to the Eagle website then click DOWNLOAD, then click ULP's â USER LANGUAGE PROGRAMS â and select the GenCAD, IPCD356 or Fabmaster download. Please follow any instructions provided on the Eagle website.
From either the schematic or board editor type the word 'run' (No quotation marks) and then press enter. A dialog will appear that will allow you to browse for the ULP you want to run, select the desired ULP and then click open. EAGLE will now execute the ULP.
Note 5:Altium Designer .PCBdoc / .PCB / .PRO: The .PCBdoc and the .PCB files from Altium Designer / Protel are normally file formats that the Unisoft software can import. Also other formats from Altium Designer that the Unisoft software can import is the Protel PCB 2.8 ASCII format.
PCBdoc/PCB: The .PCBdoc or .PRO file formats typically can be imported. To export these files from the CAD system click FILE then SAVE AS or FILE then SAVE COPY AS.
The .PCBdoc or .PRO top of the file header should look like the following:
Protel PCB 2.8: The Unisoft software can import from Altium Designer the Protel PCB 2.8 ASCII format. To export the Protel PCB 2.8 ASCII format from the SAVE AS menu on the Altium Designer CAD system choose the Protel PCB 2.8 ASCII format. This file will import correctly into the Unisoft software. The Protel file exported should have a .PRO extension but may have a .PCB file extension. If you use the preferred Unisoft SMART OPEN menu then it does not matter what the extension is. If you wish to open it with the Unisoft standard OPEN menu then the file should have a .PRO extension.
The Protel PCB 2.8 top of the file header will look something like the sample below.
There is also a full sample of this CAD file on your installation directory of the Unisoft software and by default it would be c:program filesunisoftcad-import-file-samples-etcsample_protel.pro or c:program files(x86)unisoftcad-import-file-samples-etcsample_protel.pro.
'PIN COORDINATE IS TOO LARGE' BOUNDARY LIMIT ERROR: If you are using Unisoft software version 5.11.11 or newer skip the following note because these newer versions of the software automatically adjust for the boundary limit error outlined here: If on importing the Protel PCB ASCII file into the Unisoft software you get the message 'Nothing to display!! Most likely a pin coordinate is too large. Failed.' then the PC board you are trying to import is usually outside the Unisoft software display size limits which is 65.536 inches by 65.536 inches (X=+32.767 to -32.767 and Y=+32.767 to -32.767). Usually the issue is that the PC Board when it was being designed on the CAD system was positioned towards the extreme corner of the CAD system display. So to fix this the CAD Designer simply needs to reposition the PC Board more towards the 0,0 origin of the CAD display and then regenerate the Protel PCB ASCII file. You should then be able to import this newly generated Protel PCB ASCII file into the Unisoft software. If you were to open the failing Protel PCB ASCII in a text editor you could actually see the coordinates that are too large. For example in the following file below on the fifth line we see the coordinate 36120000 and on rescaling this coordinate is 36.12 inches which is greater than our maximum limit of 32.767 inches.
Note 6:ODB++ (standard file format - Mentor Graphics/Valor ):
Importing into Unisoft: The Unisoft software can import the ODB++ format. ODB++ is not a single file format as most CAD type files but an array of files in multiple directories that usually have several levels of files. These files may or may not be in a single compressed file format such as .TGZ, .ZIP or .TAR . If compressed then to import the ODB++ file into the Unisoft software first make sure the single .TGZ, .ZIP or .TAR file that the ODB++ files are in is unzipped. Then when uncompressed you should see subdirectories with the names MATRIX, STEPS, FONTS, SYMBOLS, etc. Next from the Unisoft software click FILE from the main menu then click SMART OPEN and select the root directory where the ODB++ files are located then click OPEN and click OK. Click OK to close the Costing window and your PC Board is displayed.
About .TGZ and .TAR files: A file with the TGZ file extension is usually a GZIP Compressed Tar Archive file. TGZ files can be opened with most popular zip/unzip programs. Compressed archives are typically created by assembling collections of files into a single TAR archive, and then compressing that archive with gzip which then creates a .TGZ file. So basically most popular zip/unzip programs will work for opening .TGZ, .TAR and .ZIP files.
Note 7:X-Y Component center and rotation file: An X Y Center and rotation (XYR) file is any file containing component X Y center and rotation information. This type of file in most any format can be imported into the Unisoft software and is useful in creating Assembly and AOI machine programs. Our customers may find a file with similar data to that found in the XYR in their project CAD and BOM data folder. They can then use that file to import into the Unisoft software.
For example it may look like any variation of the following: Below are examples of files that contain reference designator, X/Y center and rotation formation in various formats. All of these files and more can be imported into the Unisoft software.
Please note that it is always preferable to use the other full CAD files listed above and not a XYR file as your first choice for importing into the Unisoft software.
For more details on XYR importing click here FEATURES and see 'Importing your X/Y Center, Rotation files'.
Note 8:OPTIONAL EXPORT OUTPUT: Generating this output may be an optional feature. Please check with the software provider for details.
Note 9:CAD Extraction Procedure: From Mentor Expedition select File, then Export then General Interface and then select the export type GenCAD. You can now import this file into the Unisoft software.

Note 18: The first few lines of the IPC-D-356 file will look something like the sample below. You can import this file into the Unisoft software.
There is also a full sample of this CAD file on your installation directory of the Unisoft software and by default it would be c:program filesunisoftcad-import-file-samples-etcsample_IPCD356.356 or c:program files(x86)unisoftcad-import-file-samples-etcsample_IPCD356.356.
Note 19: Unisoft is not aware of any full ASCII CAD file or any X,Y center rotation file export capabilities from this CAD system that can be used for import into the Unisoft software.
Since these data files are not available one other option is this CAD system can export Gerber's that the bareboard is made with. These Gerber files can then be imported into the Unisoft software and used to MAKE the component shapes on the PC board and at that point the files needed to program for your assembly, AOI and test equipment can be created. Also you can create assembly process documentation, kitting labels, do First Article Inspection, quoting, etc.
Refer to Note 2 above for additional information on Gerber files.
Note 20:AutoCAD DXF: AutoCAD DXF (Drawing Interchange Format, or Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk for enabling data interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. AutoCAD .dxf files are a 'Design eXchange Format' files. This file type is only a drawing file. Unisoft can import and display these drawing files but they have little other value within the Unisoft software. For example you can not extract component, pin, x/y, netlist data, etc. from this type of file.
Note 21:ODB++ (Valor/Mentor Graphics software):
Exporting from the CAD System: From the Altium CAD system on the FILE menu select FABRICATION OUTPUT and select ODB++ FILE. You can now import this file into the Unisoft software. Note: Depending on the version of the Altium software, etc. this option may not be available.
When uncompressed you should see subdirectories looking something like those below.
Note 22: An export that maybe available from the Altium Designer CAD system is the IPC-2581 cvg file format. The first few lines of the IPC-2581 .cvg file will look something like the sample below. You can import this file into the Unisoft software.
Link to download a sample IPC-2581 .cvg file Link to download a sample IPC-2581A .xml file
Note 23:CAD tool: This CAD tool exports drawing type files. For example some of the drawing file types that maybe created by this CAD tool are DXF, TIFF, JPG, BMP, HPGL, etc. These files are drawing type files and Unisoft can import and display these drawing files but they have little other value within the Unisoft software. For example you can not extract component, pin, x/y, netlist data, etc. from these type of files.
Note 24: The first few lines of the IPC-2581 .cvg file will look something like the sample below. You can import this file into the Unisoft software.

Use Your Android Phone as a Mouse on Windows
Did you know that you can control your PC using a phone as a mouse? Well, yes, you can. And here, in this article, we will tell you how.
You might know all the keyboard keys that can help you, in case the mouse or the trackpad of your PC stops working. Â Still, it could be a nightmare if you have an important meeting or a video conference to attend.

To save yourself, you will have to first download an application on your Android, named as âUnified Remote.â This particular app has over 100 advanced features that include power on/off, file browsing, and custom keyboards in its Pro version. However, the free version is sufficient for using a phone as a mouse for your computer.
Download Unified Remote Server on Windows
Browse to the Unified Remote website on your PC and select the latest server for your computer. The app supports all versions of Windows back from XP and is available for both 32- and 64-bit platforms. The software is also accessible on Mac (64-bit only), Linux, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino YĂșn. For Windows, you would need a disk space of 42MB.
Step 1: Once the app is downloaded on your PC, you can launch the server files.
Step 2: Do not forget to install the driver input simulation for the mouse cursor to operate from your phone.
Step 3: You may also install the component for joystick simulation.
Note that these directions are for a Windows laptop trackpad.
Step 4: The installation procedure will initiate once you select the driver inputs.
Step 5: You can also create a Start menu folder and desktop shortcut while adding firewall exceptions.
Step 6: You will receive a Windows security alert to notify you that an external driver for a keyboard/mouse is about to get downloaded to your system.
Step 7: Click âInstallâ to proceed.
Once the installation is finished, you will see a Unified Remote in your system tray. As the server is not enabled yet, you will see a âno connectionsâ status.
Install Unified Remote App on Phone
You can download the Unified Remote app from the Google Play Store very quickly. The applications support all versions of Android.
Step 1: Once you have downloaded the app, proceed to install it on your phone. It will ask for a registered Google address to unite with the server.
Step 2: If the server has been activated already, and if the laptop/PC and the phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi, you will see a âconnectedâ status.
Step 3: Move to the next screen, tap on the âBasic inputâ option to control the mouse and keyboard from the phone.
Step 4: You will be navigated to a screen that has a text in the middle, giving you directions to use.
Step 5: The moment the above screen is displayed, you are ready to use your phone to browse remotely on your computer/laptop.
The controls are simple to manage: use touch on the phone screen to simulate mouse movement, tap with one finger to left-click, tap with two fingers to right-click, pinch to zoom in and out, long press and move to drag, then tap once to release drag. Â This was how you could browse on your laptop or computer remotely, with your mobile turned into a mouse or a trackpad.

Mobile Application Download And Install and also Use Statistics
The simpleness of the makers, which can be a drawback in other markets, has shown a benefit to college districts by lowering training and also upkeep costs. All Chromebooks, other than the first three, boot with the aid of Coreboot, a fast-booting BIOS. Initial equipment partners for Chromebook advancement consisted of Acer, Adobe, Asus, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard (later on HP Inc.), Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, Intel, Samsung, as well as Dell.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of mobile apps?
Some free apps generate revenue via in-app purchases or advertising, while others are purchased for a modest price. Even though some apps have made millionaires out of their creators, most app developers will not strike it rich, and the chances of making it big are depressingly small.

EEG Sensor Research
We started by researching what type of software there was available to make sure it was plausible to achieve our idea.
Recommended by:Â https://makeitmech.com/material-required-for-portable-eeg-system-development/
Multisim: Multisim is simulation software for various designs. This software is widely used because almost all required components are available in it. It is a tool used for testing various programs, simulations and complex electronics designs. It is also used for schematic designing and capture and for PCB (Printed Circuit Board) designing. We have used multisim for developing simulation circuits for Main Board and all other 3 stages of the circuit. PCB is also designed using the same software. - Has a free variation with less options
MATLAB: MATLAB is used for real time signal plotting. We used MATLAB as a tool for analyzing real time signal. AS the signal was quite noisy and fluctuating so we used MATLAB scope to plot the signal in real time. MATLAB is platform for mathematics and all types of functions and signal processing. WE can also use MATLAB for further signal processing. We used only the Simulink part of the MATLAB for Arduino board values. - Has a one month free trial avalible
Arduino IDE: The Arduino IDE is the software for Arduino development board. The Arduino IDE is used for writing Arduino Code for the EEG circuit. The Arduino code to identify the threshold values of ADC and averaging the EEG signal values. - the free arduino coding software

BWView (http://uazu.net/bwview/)
This application, released as free software under the GNU GPL v2 for Linux and Windows, is designed for getting a rapid visual understanding of recorded brain-wave data. It uses FFT-accelerated convolution to do the analysis, which enables much greater flexiblity than using the traditional FFT-of-windowed-data approach. The frequency is plotted on a log scale, which is much better for viewing data that includes a wide range of frequencies. The window size is proportional to the wavelength at any frequency, so the convolution is effectively being done with a complex wavelet at various different scales. The ratio of window size to wavelength can be varied easily to allow different aspects of the data to be shown. Features:
Visually displays EEG data.
Platforms: Linux, Windows
This told us that there were many different Software that would be adequate to help us in our project. We then looked into existing headsets that use EEG:
When looking at these headsets it appeared that comfort and accuracy would be the main issue. Most headsets that exist currently are made of a hard plastic and are not comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.
Products such as Muse (https://choosemuse.com/) are used to monitor brainwaves to assist meditation and utilize a conductive rubber for added comfort. However, there is still a hard metal band for the sensors which would not be comfortable to sleep in. Â

Products like Emotiv (https://www.emotiv.com/) highlight the fact that the use of gels and liquids increases the accuracy of the readings. This means that electrodes constantly need replacing and also the added discomfort of liquids on the head during sleep makes this approach unlikely to be plausible for our idea. This means our readings will never be as accurate as they can be.
Even Sleep Shepherd (https://sleepshepherd.com/) a device already designed to sleep in looks bulky and has hard pieces that would make some sleeping positions highly uncomfortable. The use of soft materials however does show us that our idea is plausible.

Who did what?Â

Exploring the Azure IoT Arduino Cloud DevKit
Someone gave me an Azure IoT DevKit, and it was lovely timing as I'm continuing to learn about IoT. As you may know, I've done a number of Arduino and Raspberry Pi projects, and plugged them into various and sundry clouds, including AWS, Azure, as well as higher-level hobbyist systems like AdaFruit IO (which is super fun, BTW. Love them.)
The Azure IoT DevKit is brilliant for a number of reasons, but one of the coolest things is that you don't need a physical one...they have an online simulator! Which is very Inception. You can try out the simulator at https://aka.ms/iot-devkit-simulator. You can literally edit your .ino Arduino files in the browser, connect them to your Azure account, and then deploy them to a virtual DevKit (seen on the right). All the code and how-tos are on GitHub as well.
When you hit Deploy it'll create a Free Azure IoT Hub. Be aware that if you already have a free one you may want to delete it (as you can only have a certain number) or change the template as appropriate. When you're done playing, just delete the entire Resource Group and everything within it will go away.
Right off the bat you'll have the code to connect to Azure, get tweets from Twitter, and display them on the tiny screen! (Did I mention there's a tiny screen?) You can also "shake" the virtual IoT kit, and exercise the various sensors. It wouldn't be IoT if it didn't have sensors!
This is just the simulator, but it's exactly like the real MXChip IoT DevKit. (Get one here) They are less than US$50 and include WiFi, Humidity & Temperature, Gyroscope & Accelerometer, Air Pressure, Magnetometer, Microphone, and IrDA, which is ton for a small dev board. It's also got a tiny 128x64 OLED color screen! Finally, the board also can go into AP mode which lets you easily put it online in minutes.
I love these well-designed elegant little devices. It also shows up as an attached disk and it's easy to upgrade the firmware.
You can then dev against the real device with free VS Code if you like. You'll need:
Node.js and Yarn: Runtime for the setup script and automated tasks.
Azure CLI 2.0 MSI - Cross-platform command-line experience for managing Azure resources. The MSI contains dependent Python and pip.
Visual Studio Code (VS Code): Lightweight code editor for DevKit development.
Visual Studio Code extension for Arduino: Extension that enables Arduino development in Visual Studio Code.
Arduino IDE: The extension for Arduino relies on this tool.
DevKit Board Package: Tool chains, libraries, and projects for the DevKit
ST-Link Utility: Essential tools and drivers.
But this Zip file sets it all up for you on Windows, and head over here for Homebrew/Mac instructions and more details.
I was very impressed with the Arduino extension for VS Code. No disrespect to the Arduino IDE but you'll likely outgrow it quickly. This free add on to VS Code gives you intellisense and integration Arduino Debugging.
Once you have the basics done, you can graduate to the larger list of projects at https://microsoft.github.io/azure-iot-developer-kit/docs/projects/ that include lots of cool stuff to try out like a cloud based Translator, Door Monitor, and Air Traffic Control Simulator.
All in all, I was super impressed with the polish of it all. There's a LOT to learn, to be clear, but this was a very enjoyable weekend of play.

Lab 4 - cpsc 543
This past lab had us learning the basics of a PID (proportional integral derivative) controller. What is that you might ask, well basically itâs a control loop feedback mechanism used for modulate some output.Â
The lab had a fair bit of setup which involved:
The PIDLibrary for Arduino
The Twiddlerino library for ArduinoÂ
A new programming environment called Processing, thats for graphical sketches.Â
The ControlP5 library for Processing
Some Arduino and Processing skeleton code to get things started.
What is Twiddlerino? Well formally itâs a single degree of freedom rotary haptic device. Itâs better explained with a picture in my opinion.
Basically on the left you have a DC motor with a cylindrical disk attached to the drive shaft which you can interact with via your hands. Through it you can convey different haptic feedback such as resistance or guidance. In the centre you have the interface box, that houses Deumilanove board, and on the right, the power adapter.
It took a bit to get this setup to work but once going the Twiddlerino simulates a simple spring, via haptics, while through the Processing Sketch you can see it visually.
youtube
What you watch the blue wave doing on the screen is what you essentially feel through the Twiddlerino. Pretty cool I think!
So with the Twiddlerino working and the visual sketch in Processing displaying a visual representation of the haptic feedback, there were a bunch of questions to answer for different parts of the lab. Iâll do my best to go through them below.
Part 1. Run the code and try out the P controller.Â
The skeleton code implemented the P part of the PID, itâs what you see working in the video above.
So how did it feel? Well it felt like a spring centred around the target line. Moving slightly above or below the target line gave no resistance but as soon as you started getting to far away the Twiddler would start to push back with increasing resistance. Also like a spring you could pull it far and let it spring back and bounce around somewhat until it reaches equilibrium.Â
What happens when you change the target position? it moves the red line in the Processing windows graphing the position and target over time. The blue line follows the target as the P controller is attempting to keep the blue line (position) near the target position. The image below shows what happens when there is a sudden large change in the target and how the position adjusts accordingly.

What does changing the P parameter do? As you increase it, it progressively makes the spring or Twiddler feel stiffer and have more force feedback.
Do you notice any problems? If you make P to high then the position will just behave very erratically. Being unable to keep at an equilibrium and shooting wildly back and forth if disturbed to much via the Twiddler. You can see this in the video below.
youtube
Part 2. Add the D component to your controller.
Adding the D component took a little bit of code in the Arduino skeleton code and a few graphical changes in the Processing sketch. Below is it in action with my varying the D value to see the results.
youtube
How does this change the behaviour of the Twiddlerino? - Controls the spring-back force so it doesn't overshoot the target much, reducing the bouncing back and forth of the Twiddler around the target.
Are there any problems? If you put the D value to high it has a very slow return back to the target as seen near the end of the video.
Part 3. Add the I component to your controller.
I didnât get a good video with a larger P value while adjusting I, but the second half of this video shows me playing around with different I values.Â
youtube
How does this change the behaviour of the Twiddlerino? It will try and bring the position as close to the target as possible, basically trying to minimize any steady state error.
Can you create a stable system that reaches the target? I did eventually but didnât get a good video of it :( Basically i put P around 6, I around 0.5, and D around 0.25. And it made roughly a stable system that returned to the target fairly quickly, with minimal bounce-back, and stuck very close to the target.
Part 4. Implement a virtual wall, as a one-sided spring (like Step 1) but active only for Ξ>0.)
I put the following code at the bottom of the main loop() // implement virtual wall  if (pos > 0) {   // do nothing   SetPWMOut(0);  } else {   SetPWMOut(PWMOut);  }
And after tweaking the P and D values a bit, got a pretty decent feeling of âhittingâ a wall.
youtube
What happens? Anything above the target (greater than zero), when the target is set to zero is free space, outside the wall. While as soon as you hit the wall (i.e. zero) the spring does an abrupt push back, making it feel like hitting a wall.
By adding/tweaking PID parameters, can you make it more wall-like? The video above shows a P value of around 8 and a D value of around 0.08 which simulated a wall fairly well in my opinion.
Part 5. Play with the controller update rates, and with introducing delays.
By edditing the myPID.SetSampleTime(1); //every 1 ms line in the setup() routine. I was able to play around with different update rates.
How does this change the system? I missed getting a video of this, but i cranked the rate up to 10 second and it let me get the position well into the wall before it registered that I was in there.
What happens if you sample faster or slower? Faster gives you better resolution, so you know youâll definitely hit the wall the moment you get to zero. While making it larger can have it so that your position can get in the wall before the system picks up youâve passed zero.
Can you make the interrupt service routine run faster, and see better performance that way? Sampling at 1ms seemed pretty optimal, and when I reduced this to less, it didnât really seem to make a difference. It only got worse the higher the value went.Â
Part 6. Think about different ways of timing the loop (polling "run as fast as you can", vs. clocked "wake up at a specified time").
Here we were to look at 3 Arduino sketches; Blink, BlinkWithoutDelay, and FlashLED.Â
What are the impact of each of these?
For Blink you're essential blocking the code and causing the whole program to stall until it completes.
For BlinkWithoutDelay you're essentially introducing a state machine and keeping tack of the time since last blink. So instead of blocking code for each pass of the main loop and getting held up by delay(), as in Blink, you just execute the code when a certain length of time has passed. Freeing up the thread to execute other code.
I remember doing something similar for this in lab 3 where I had to have a servo and dc motor work independent of each other and not block each others execution.
For FlashLED, youâre taking advantage of the built in timers on the Arduino, there typically tied to pins so you might interrupt some of the Arduinos Pulse Width Modulation. But otherwise you can use them to trigger code at exact time intervals.
Which method is implemented in the sample code? In the start of the main loop it implements the state machine (keeping track of time since last execution) before printing out the position variable. Set to print out every 10 ms.  But also the myPID.Compute(); probably implements a similar state machine.
Can you make a theory about impact on the Twiddlerino sketch, and test it? I think if you switch this to polling, i.e. removing the time tracking it might just tie up the thread and not let anything else run.
Hereâs what I tried.
At the beginning of main loop() comment out this block of code, except for the println() statement.
 //Write position every updateInterval ms //  long t = millis(); //  long dt = t - last_time; //  if (dt >= updateInterval) //  {     Serial.println((int)pos); //   last_time = t; //  }
Hereâs a video of what happened. (click link)
https://youtu.be/m9TZ02gG5XM (I think I reached the number of embedded videos in Tumblr limit o.O)
It seems to just not let anything else respond. I think you're basically tying up the process for the code and if you leave only the Serial.println((int)pos); uncommented; letting nothing else run.
Overall this lab was a great learning experience, and how to get a control loop feedback mechanism working. This is the first time Iâve ever worked with a PID controller and found that itâs nice, clean, and simple to implement. I guess thatâs why there still so heavily used.Â
Now next weeks lab will be really interesting as itâs time to start using our newfound PID skills in a physical creation of our choosing.
Until next time!

Build Your Own Altair 8800 Personal Computer
Go back to 1974 and the dawn of home computing with this Arduino-based kit
Photo: Randi Klett
Gif: Randi Klett
The MITS Altair 8800 was the first commercially successful personal computer. Created by Ed Roberts in 1974, it was purchased by the thousands via mail order, proving there was a huge demand for computers outside universities and large corporations. Its influence was immense: For example, after seeing the Altair featured on the cover of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics , Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft (then Micro-Soft) in order to write a Basic interpreter for the new machine.
The Altair sold for US $439 in kit form. Original machines are now collectorsâ items that trade for thousands of dollars. Fortunately, there are some cheaper alternatives for people who want to get a direct understanding of the Altair computing experience. Modern kits that replicate the Altair hardware as faithfully as possible are available, as are purely virtual online simulators. Falling somewhere between a replica and a simulation is the $149 Altairduino kit from Chris Davis. The Altairduino duplicates the front panel of the Altair in all its LED- and switch-festooned glory while emulating the internal hardware (including some once fantastically expensive peripherals), using an Arduino Due.
The Altairduino is derived from David Hanselâs work on cloning the Altair with the Arduino Due and Arduino Mega 2560. If you want to build one of Hanselâs designs from scratch, you can do so by following his free instructions on hackster.io. The advantage of Davisâs kit is that it provides all the components, including a nice bamboo case and plastic front panel, along with a custom printed circuit board (PCB) that greatly simplifies construction.
Photos: Stephen Cass
Lights, Switches, Action: A printed circuit board contains additional circuitry for driving LEDs [top], but most of the work is handed off to an Arduino Due plugged into a rear connector [middle]. The finished PCB [bottom] is mounted in the case.
The original Altairâs relatively large size means that most of the components are fairly well spaced out on the PCB. Even a beginner could do much of the soldering, although a little bit more experience is required for trickier areas, such as the headers that connect to the Due. The fiddliest bit is adding the LED indicator lights. These are mounted on spacers, and itâs best to put the front panel in place to ensure alignment, which can put you in one of those situations where you really wish you had an extra pair of hands to hold the panel, LED, and PCB tightly together while you solder. The online instructions are detailed and well illustrated, but I would recommend skipping forward and making sure you solder all the resistors in the kit before proceeding to add other, taller, components.
The Altairduino improves on the original Altair in two important respects. First, it offers modern interface options. You can connect an old-school terminal using an optional DB-9 connector (which I will stipulate should properly be called a DE-9 connector, so no need to send me letters this time!), but you can also use a soft terminal running on a computer via a USB connection, or even Bluetooth.
You do the initial configuration of the Altairduino via USB. The instructions are written for Microsoft Windows, so I had to do a little poking around the forums on the Altairduino site to figure out how to get my Mac to talk to the USB interface. Setting the baud rate to 115200 when launching the âscreenâ terminal command did the trick, and once I set the Bluetooth connection up as the power-on default, it was all smooth sailing.
The second big improvement is that the Altairduino comes loaded with a lot of software. You can call up some programs purely by flipping various front panel switches, such as Kill the Bit , a game that hacked the Altairâs memory-address indicator lights to act as a 1-dimensional display. Other programs are called up with a combination of switch throws and terminal commands. You can quickly fire up Microsoftâs very first 4-kilobyte Basic (which gives you the option, on startup, to disable its sine, random number, and square root functions to save a little memory), or its more advanced 16-KB Basic. The latter has a number of programs you can load from the Altairduinoâs memory, including early computer game classics such as Lunar Lander , Star Trek , and Hunt the Wumpus .
You can put additional Altair software on a microSD card, which you plug into a reader thatâs soldered to the PCB (Davis conveniently offers a one-stop bundle on his website). Once the kit is assembled, you canât access the reader to swap out the card without unscrewing the case, but since the universe of Altair 8800 software isnât growing that rapidly, Iâll manage. (That said, I did just see someone announce they had gotten a Forth compiler running on the Altairduino that Iâd like to try.)
The card reader emulates the 88-HDSK hard disk that was available in the business version of the Altair, which sold in the late 1970s for $11,450 to $15,950. A number of disk images are available in the software bundle, including one with the CP/M operating system. The CP/M software also comes with a bunch of software, including parts 1, 2, and 3 of Zork, a pioneering text adventure game.
The Altairduino is a lovely kit thatâs an enormous amount of funâit is surprisingly satisfying to control a computer by flipping switches versus, say, mouse clicks. More seriously, simply looking at pictures of early personal computers, with their blinking rows of lights and bulky cases, can leave the impression they were little more than toys. But engaging with this incarnation quickly demonstrates that the Altair was a capable system, and it becomes much clearer why it was that this machine came to be so critical in establishing the value of personal computing.

Displaying the IoT Module-Style
An integrated and compact Wi-Fi-enabled display module can be used to display and process data from the cloud.
As the IoT rapidly gains traction, thereâs a clear need for internet-connected sensors that also have a simple display function. Such sensors will highly automate various functions by sending data to the controlling cloud application. Nonetheless, the ability to display information locally is becoming increasingly important in the way that local or field engineers can confirm updated data received from the cloud, or simply confirm that communication and operational functions are normal. This article highlights, using practical examples, a wireless internet-connected display module that achieves the above requirements utilizing a very straightforward, low-cost method.
For the majority of IoT deployments, sensors and actuators will operate wirelessly using either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. While Wi-Fi is much more power-hungry than Bluetooth, especially the Bluetooth Low Energy profile (BLE), Wi-Fi does have the benefit of being able to communicate over greater distances with a high data-transfer rate. The topology of many IoT deployments includes gateway devices that provide two-way communication with the cloud and a means of batching data collected from Bluetooth-connected local sensors, in addition to some degree of local control function.
For the embedded developer, a number of compact embedded single-board computers feature have Wi-Fi connectivity. Adding a display to the mix can be achieved in a variety of ways, most often using a pre-assembled display module or creating a discrete design.
1. This Internet of Displays module incorporates Wi-Fi support.Â
However, recent developments have seen the launch of a complete Wi-Fi-connected embedded platform that incorporates a touch-sensitive display. An example of such a platform is the gen4 Internet of Displays (IoD) series from 4D Systems. Based around an Expressif ESP8266 Wi-Fi microcontroller, the module offers resistive-touch, 320- à 240-pixel, TFT, 65,000 true-to-life color display sizes of 2.4, 2.8, or 3.2 inches (Fig. 1).
In addition to a micro SD socket for use in data-logging and image-file applications, the module has 512 kB of flash memory for user application code and 128 kB of SRAM, of which 80 kB is available for use. Measuring 78.4 x 44.8 x 7.2 mm (2.4-in. model), the modules can be easily programmed using the popular Arduino IDE. A GFX4d library enables the fast development of graphics-based applications through the use of primitive graphics functionsâitâs available for download from 4D Systemsâ GitHub page.
A more integrated and straightforward approach to graphics-based application development is possible with the Workshop4 environment, which can be downloaded for free from 4D Systemsâ website. A 10-pin FPC cable connects the 4D IoD to a 4D gen4 IoD programmer (Fig. 2). The programmer provides all connectivity to the module and the means to power, program, and test the IoD module.
2. A programmer board provides debugging and configuration support without having to incorporate it on the module.Â
The ESP8266 is a wireless microcontroller thatâs widely supported within the Arduino community. As a result, you will find a plethora of open-source projects that leverage the use of its Wi-Fi capabilities, and connect to free data sources such as Weather Underground.
Applying the Module
The 4D IoD series is suitable for a range of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Consider, for example, an application that connects over Wi-Fi to a data sourceâWeather Undergroundâin order to display the current temperature and humidity for a specific location.
Pulling together this application involves three main tasks: designing the way the weather information is presented graphically; using an API to gather data from Weather Underground; and displaying the information.
Prerequisites to starting this project include downloading and installing the Arduino IDE, and installing the ESP8266 community board manager files, the GFX4d library, and the Workshop4 IDE. Full instructions and necessary files are provided in the gen4 IoD datasheet and on 4D Systemsâ GitHub page.
3. The Workshop4 IDE can display code (left) and a simulated display (right).Â
First, letâs tackle the GUI using Workshop4. Having downloaded and installed the latest version, you need to open up a new project and select the gen4 IoD display from the list of available displays. You will see two main window frames

Digital prototyping - What are the qualities of digital prototyping, and how does this relate to interaction design?
What is a prototype?
Prototypes should not be the result of a design process, they should rather be the innovative process. Prototypes are the windows and lenses to view the people and processes of innovations (Valentine, 2013). Prototypes are made to explore various parts of a design idea to learn from it to make the design better. Therefore, a prototype should not be made as a finished product to show a fully developed concept. When making the prototypes it is not significant what kind of media or tools that are used, but it is rather how they are used by the designer to explore aspects of a design idea (Houde and Hill, 1997). Whatever prototype a designer ends up making, the importance is in how it is used to explore the user experiences and interactions. Looking into the different ways of approaching digital prototyping can be beneficial since it can give the designer an indication on which method to use for different aspects of the design.
In a design process of interactive artefacts, prototyping is a central activity since it can model various levels of the design. With prototypes designers have the ability to explore the looks, behaviours and functions of a design, and these can look different depending on the stages of the design process (Buchenau and Suri, 2000). Quick and dirty prototypes is a good first approach since various kinds of prototypes play their part in iterative systems that ends up with a well-understood product. Making a fully working prototype is too complex and takes too long time to be able to fit into an iterative process (Valentine, 2013). Â In physical prototyping, it is quite easy to do quick and dirty prototypes. For example, if you wanted to explore the weight and size of an artefact it could be composed quickly with a brick. While in digital prototyping the focus is often on computer-embedded products where the userâs interactions are human-computer interactions where the prototypes might need to be a bit more complex than just a brick.
What does prototypes prototype?
Both physical and digital prototyping have their restrains. While physical prototypes are restricted to the available materials, digital prototypes have the ability to be made by faking many functions. Designers can make prototypes that looks and imitates how a finished prototype would to gain knowledge and explore the design space. Often prototypes are made to explore a specific aspect of a design idea. A designer can focus on demonstrating certain interactions without knowing or determining other aspects of a design, such as a productâs functionality or appearance. Designers can therefore purposefully screen out parts that they do not want to explore in that moment to extract knowledge about a specific aspect (Lim, Stolterman & Tenenberg, 2008). Designers can that way design and test different interactions and take that gained knowledge from the prototypes to make a better product. There are many different tools available to explore interactions through prototypes. Following I will give some examples of tools and how they were used to explore interactions.
With the technology we have today there is almost an endless number of ways designers can build digital prototypes. Tools range from electronic building blocks like Arduino to free user interface programs like Noodle and to web sockets where you can fake interactions. And Wizard of Oz simulations can be used together with other digital prototyping tools to simulate the interactions if the technology canât do all the work. A design team had a project where the task was to develop a concept and/or a design requirement for a product that attaches to a bike with tourists who rent bikes in mind. The main concerns of the task were for tourist to find points of interest, follow routes, get back to locations like a hotel and to travel safely. One concept was developed with safety in mind. The concept was a sensor that would detect if a car were coming from behind in the dead angle so the cycling tourist wouldnât be surprised by the cars and by that way avoid accidents. Without knowing how the finished product could look like the design team wanted to explore in what way the cyclist could be alerted and how the cyclist would experience this. Would the tourists actually feel safer in the traffic or would the sensor just be confusing? By using Arduino, an associated sensor and LED lights, the design team quickly programmed so that if an object were too close to the sensor the LED would start to flash with the flash increasing if the object came closer. This were mounted on a bike so user tests could be conducted (see figure 1).
Figure 1: Picture of the Arduino and the sensor mounted on the bike with the sensor to the left. The LED light was mounted on the handlebar.
The main aspect the group wanted to explore was how the users would react and behave with this kind of device on the bike. Therefore, the looks of the product were not important and not included in this prototype. This is an example of where the parts that were not interesting at that time in the development were screened out. The user tests showed all kinds of problems with the concept like the range limit for the sensor was too short, LED lights might be too weak to see in the sunlight and so on. The main question that was brought to light was also if the users would trust this kind of device, is it worth to continue to explore further into the concept? Imagine if the design team had started off by creating and testing the looks of the concept and then the functions and interactions and then after user testing decide to change the concept or not go further with it at all. Then they would have wasted precious time and resources on the looks of a concept they might not go further with because of the lack of function. The design team here saved that time by starting of by testing the user experiences.
Another example of a concept for the same project is a compass that is meant to point the tourist on the bike towards a specific point of interest instead of the compass pointing to north. The idea is that instead of a specific route for a point of interest that the tourist wants to go to, the compass points the tourist in the right direction so the tourist can decide its own way and explore the city. The design team wanted to explore how the users would interpret the compass while cycling. A digital prototype was made with websockets (see figure 2) where one screen is the compass that the user sees and one screen is the controls for the compass instead of using a real GPS. The screens were showed on two separated smartphones where one was mounted on a bike with a test user on it. The main question that the designers wanted to explore was how the users would interpret the compass, so the looks of the physical object that would show the compass or the colour, shape or design of the compass was not of importance at this stage. The focus was on how the users would behave with the concept where the looks wouldnât affect the outcome of the tests.
Figure 2: Prototype made with websockets for the compass concept. To left: what the user sees. To right: what the designer sees and control the compass with.
Conclusion and discussion
Designers should consider having prototypes that is not too detailed as it can take away the focus from the concept or the part that the designer wants to test. By having too detailed prototypes, the users might give feedback on parts that is not of importance. Instead of getting feedback on the interaction or behaviour of the prototype the user might give feedback on the colour of the background since they might believe itâs pretty much a finished concept. With that said it is also important for the designer to have in mind that a prototype is not the same as a final product. By having the focus on the purpose of the prototype and what it prototypes, designers can get deeper knowledge. If designers have a clear purpose for each prototype they will gain in better design insights.
The main concern for interaction designers is to understand the interactions and how to design them. With digital prototypes designers can explore a broad area of interactions. By having all kinds of quick and easy tools available, designers can easily try things out and fail without it being too expensive. It is all about trying out and discover problems and explore possibilities. It is important to be able to try out concepts without having the fear to fail. Failing doesnât necessary have to be bad in prototyping since designers still gains knowledge from it. Prototypes work as a helping hand for understanding the human interactions with artefacts. Digital prototypes provide tools that puts the users in situations where they can interact with products from the very beginning of a design process to the end.
