I got curious and decided to look at the technical specs on IMDB

Season one and two are shot with Leitz SUMMILUX-C lenses which are described as capturing natural colors of a scene very well. This makes SO MUCH sense especially for season one, where everything feels so much more down to earth. There would have been some color grading/correction I’m sure but I wouldn’t be surprised if at least for season one they kept it closer to the initial capture.

Season 3 is where they change lenses, which makes sense given the dramatic shift in tone and color grading that happened that season. They shoot with Leitz THALIA lenses which are described as being more cinematic. It’s focal length doesn’t go as low as the Summilux-C (which can go down to 16mm for incredibly low depth of field) but it can go up to 180mm while the Summilux-C can only go to 135mm.

Season 4 was shot on Arri Alexa Large Format camera which is apparently what is approved to shoot Netflix 4K programming. I’m not sure if they are required to use this camera, although the large formatting does match the cinematic feel that they seem to be going for with season 4. Also something interesting is that they were shooting and mixing for Dolby. Perhaps they knew ahead of time they wanted to have theatrical screenings? I think I remember the Duffers talking about wanting to have season 5 in theaters, I could see them doing that for the finale.

I was worried the TV would be too big, but it honestly feels like watching a big movie screen at the theater and it is so immersive. Like you are *in* the frickin movie.

And even in the 2 years since I got my other TV, the picture quality has improved quite a bit. All of the issues I had with my other TV are pretty much resolved. The only thing it can’t do perfectly is deep inky blacks like an OLED screen. But it comes really close and it gets much much brighter than any OLED, so lasers and lightsabers just look soooo cool. Like they could melt your face off.

I am also finally able to notice a difference between 1080p and 4K. Though it is still subtle and I wish people wouldn't think 4K is the ultimate measure of clarity and quality. Resolution has become one of the least important aspects of picture quality.

I mean, our phones can film in 4K. An Arri Alexa cinema camera can also film in 4K. Do you really believe a $1000 smartphone and an $80000 motion picture camera have equivalent quality?

The goal of higher resolutions is to resolve more detail to provide a sharper image. So imagine a tiny tree in the background where the leaves are all mushed together in a blur in a low detail image and the individual leaves can be seen in a high detail image.

What allows you to get that high level of detail?

Teamwork!

You need a really good sensor with a lot of photosites or pixels. And you need a really good lens with a great design and perfect glass. Bigger is better in both cases.

There is this concept called "perceptual megapixels." This is a measurement of how much detail a camera lens can resolve. So if you have a 50 megapixel sensor but a lens that can only resolve 20 megapixels worth of detail... then you are getting a 20 megapixel image.

The dirty secret of smartphone advertising is that while their sensors might *technically* be 4K or 8K or 100+ megapixels, none of those tiny lenses have the resolving power to support those resolutions. That's why a Samsung with a 100 megapixel sensor does not look significantly sharper than an iPhone with a 12 megapixel sensor. And that's why if you took an old DSLR with a 12 megapixel sensor and slapped a Zeiss Otus lens on the front, the image detail would trounce any smartphone.

But honestly, detail and sharpness really only come into play when you are pixel peeping and zooming way into images. At normal viewing distances, pretty much any modern camera or lens is sharp enough to give you an acceptably detailed image.

If you are looking for a quality TV picture, ignore the Ks and look for things like brightness (nits) and black levels (contrast ratio) and color gamut (number of colors) and HDR interpretation (tone mapping). A great site that breaks all this down is rtings.com. They have the most detailed reviews of anyone and they test various aspects of picture quality. You can decide which aspects are important to you and choose a great television accordingly.

You’re about to get three Dieter prompts in the space of five days. Here’s the first. Is it okay to say that I believe they all take place sometime after the (yet to come) conclusion of I’ll Never Fall In Love Again? Is that spoilery? Shouldn’t be if you know me at all...

And yet, it doesn’t have to be related to that fic at all. Dieter’s a fkn tornado in whatever universe he’s in....

“Hedy Lamarr and science, Gena Davis and archery, Paul Newman and racing, and now Dieter Bravo and painting,” you’d encouraged, “just because they were famous actors doesn’t mean they didn’t find acclaim in other pursuits.”

Six months after that little pillow peptalk, you find yourself flushed with pride as you stand in LAXART crowded with art show opening attendees as varied as yourself in your black cocktail dress and Dieter himself in his snuggle bear coat and hideous $400 Zubaz.

But beyond the patrons, his massive paintings haunt the walls, surreal studies of Arri Alexa cameras eating crew members or a swirling pot of Oscars melting and being molded into dildos, whatever your husband has seen in his dreams and flashbacks, working through his rehab with oils and charcoals, messying his hands instead of his brain.

You’ve been getting stopped by guests since you arrived and it’s only now that you’re able to wander into a side gallery where a group of people stand crowded around one painting in particular...it draws you in; someone sees you and moves aside, and then another, causing a wave and then a full parting of the sea to give you a quiet path on which to approach.
