You are a fantastic person. Just... honestly. You’re incredible. When I first met you... It was a little over eight months ago, and I had no idea just how important of a person you’d become to me. You are without a doubt one of the best people that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. 

You are so, so unbelievably talented. I mean, there’s your art, which I always absolutely love to see and I am in a constant state of admiration of all the detail you put into every piece, and then there’s your outfit boards, which are PHENOMENAL and not only look stunning but always fit the characters they’re made for so well, and then. there’s. your. writing. I am not exaggerating when I say that I don’t think I have connected with any other author’s writing the way I do with yours. Of course, there’s People Watching, which is a masterpiece that’s still one of my favorite stories I’ve ever read, ever (I think about it every single day. Jacks and I were literally having a PW ship war yesterday and it was so fun), and then there's No Saviors, which is an incredible original project that I absolutely love, and then there’s Was There Ever a Time, which is the rare piece of fluff that I like... I love it. It’s adorable. AND EVEN YOUR SHORTER PROMPT WRITINGS ARE AMAZING. I will forever be in awe of your talent, and I admire you as a creator so, so much.

...But, of course, even more than that, I love you as a friend. 💕 You are a great person, Nesha. You... like, every time I talk with you, every time we do something together, I have a blast. It just feels like comfort, if that makes sense. Like, whether it’s watching shows and movies, listening to podcasts, talking about fics and writing, or even just sharing funny Tumblr posts or TikToks. I can’t even begin to describe how much I enjoy doing things with you. You’re such a fun person, and such a smart person, and just... you’re amazing and deserve amazing things.

I have another thing for you that I’m not quite finished with, but that I’m hoping to get done by the end of your birthday. ...We both know how bad I am with time estimates, though, so... lizzie ( @bitchmilsky ) - stephanie brown !! steph is like...absolutely the biggest meme kid of the whole batfam and unironically says poggers and calls bruce a boomer to his face and if that isn’t lizzie idk what is. also they’re both like. determined and funny and creative and loyal as hell and they show so much love and affection to their friends all the time. they’re very much alike and you can’t tell me otherwise.

eliza ( @willexs ) - dick grayson. like, i can’t put my finger on why this fits so well in my mind but it just does. dick is the kind of character who can be incredibly smart and wise at one moment and INCREDIBLY chaotic in the next, and that’s absolutely eliza. and like, being the glue that holds the whole batfam together?? being a badass but also the kindest hearted person ever?? not to mention that dick is like, a canon heartthrob, which is VERY fitting.

(also just so you guys know steph and dick are my favorite batfam kids and i didn’t choose them for you for that reason but they did happen to fit and i think its perfect)

shona ( @ciara-knightly ) - artemis crock !! they just have really similar energies in my head, and i admire them in similar ways. both are incredibly skilled and intelligent and have strong heads and a ton of determination and resolution. both are never afraid to call people out, but they also are kind and selfless and have amazing senses of humor. artemis is a really loyal and steadfast friend and someone who’s good at talking to people, and that’s absolutely shona. 

nikki ( @zackmartin ) - tell me nikki doesn’t give you immediate barry allen energy. just try. just this like...super sure sense of right and wrong. extending kindness to literally everyone, being a hero but like not falling into the celebrity status of it, just acting like one of the people and treating everyone like friends or family. going through a lot and pushing forward and leading with their hearts regardless.

heather ( @taylorswiftrulestheworld ) - m’gann !!! specifically the young justice s1 version, but like...the optimism, the desire to always see the best in people!! the endless support and love and kindness!! the way they’re both so open to making friends and giving love to other people and the way they’re both intelligent and creative and kind all the time !!!

lou ( @cactus-con ) - like, young justice zatanna. they’re both extremely creative (magic is absolutely an art form, and lou’s art is like magic), and they both have really good hearts that are just driven towards kindness and helping others. but they also both have a witty streak and are wonderful and super loyal and trustworthy friends that will always be there for you.

nesha ( @neshatriumphs ) - koriand’r/starfire all the way. super protective. radiant as hell. has an amazing and commanding presence that draws people in, an intense sort of kindness but also like, an absolute unwillingness to cave on what they believe in. both of them are powerful and smart and won’t let anyone’s bullshit pass, and they look out for people constantly. i love them both so much <33

Hello loves!

 Another week or so has gone by since my last review post.  Okay, more like 3 weeks.  Dang, where does the time go?  

 Truly, if you’re reading this, I don’t deserve you.  But I can only thank all of you who are reading this, all of you who chat with me, who put up with my requests for more work, who post your amazing art and then are like “why the f didn’t she read it ASAP after she whined for me to post it yesterday?!?”, who understand that I want to use .gifs but I just don’t have the patience to find them, who accept me for who I am, who share their love of music with me, and those of you who don’t talk to me at all but who read what I write. Thank you!

 I found organizing by book was efficient – so I’m going to go that route again.  I’m also linking to masterlists whenever I can – and especially if I binged a bunch of a series.

 I’m fairly sure I read an unhealthy amount of fiction again … anyone want to take a guess at how many?

An Interview with Tunde Olaniran by Mari Longmire

“Hi, it’s Tunde.”

Tunde Olaniran’s sold out performance on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at UMMA was the second leg of a tour mostly situated in the Midwest, but the University of Michigan was one of the last venues in his home state before heading to close out in places like DC, Philadelphia, and New York. This wasn’t his first time at the University of Michigan. One of his most notable appearances being an hour-long interview and performance with Tracy Clayton and Heben Nigatu, the popular hosts of the favored podcast Another Round. Tunde’s known for his striking presence, sharp intellect, and many rave about his live performances and from what I hear—UMMA was no different.

“I wanted to set myself up to have the most fun on stage,” he reflected. After traveling through the U.S. and eventually Europe with the headliner “Namesake” from his debut album Transgressor, Tunde described understanding his music in greater context. Live performance is a core aspect of his musicality. By honing the aspects of his sound which resonated most with his diverse audiences, he was sure to craft unforgettable, captivating experience. Tunde breathed a sigh of relief as he remarked on the release of his new album Stranger. He explained the value of resisting the pressure of needing to create emotional depth in order to stay relevant to audiences. For Tunde, his passion is echoed by his commitment and the secret: enjoyment.

Tunde was invited to perform at UMMA in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition Beyond Borders: Global Africa. By blurring the map lines, the exhibit challenges our understanding of the ways in which borders are thought to dictate the exchange of cultural and artistic influence. The exhibition highlights how histories of colonization and globalization has not only impacted, but distorted the creative image of the vast continent. In the city of Detroit, Tunde calls attention to black women’s many artistic and cultural influences in the music scene, but the problematic lack of visibility of black women artists in venues. In refusing complacency, Tunde chooses resistance through visibility: honest and vulnerable.

Before the show, I had an opportunity to speak with him.

Mari: So your performance on Saturday is in conjunction with Beyond Borders: Global Africa exhibit at UMMA. Tunde: You know I think there are so many ways you could talk about that subject. One of the things that has been on my mind is the idea as an artist: Do I belong? Do all artists belong? Do artists belong in a place where they are booked to perform, but don’t necessarily feel welcomed? Or do you live in a city and you are an artist of color, but the spaces don’t feel like they are for you? For my album release, the line-up is entirely black artists from Detroit. For me, it’s important, not like because it’s like a checklist, but I want there to be women on the bill. I want there to be trans women on the bill. And you would think that this wouldn’t even be a talking point in a city like Detroit, but it is actually rare. And so many spaces have benefited from black women’s contributions to culture in Detroit And so few bills have prioritized putting black women on them. So I’m thinking about what spaces do you take up? What spaces use your influence, but don’t need you there.

As the conversation continued, Tunde spoke to how the harmful dynamics in the minute interactions offstage can have a palpable effect on the artist. He cited his own encounters with individuals within the industry, such as sound engineers (who are largely white men), that generate discomfort for him and other artists of color. “I deserve to be here and you need to be respectful to me as an artist,” he remarked. In his process, he works to prioritize an expectation of consideration by making vocal and visible the norms that can negatively impact the performance on stage. “It makes you a better performer and you are better able to connect to the audience and I wonder how many people have had bad performances or bad shows because of [the things] that happens to them before they get on stage.” Tunde’s focus is investing in an understanding of what it means to make artists of color feel welcomed, respected, and comforted in the industry. Building an infrastructure that centers the margins.

Tunde’s growing recognition is not accidental. Enjoyment is at the core of his artistic process and Tunde’s unquestionable talent is equally matched with a fervor surrounding his work. Getting an opportunity to speak with him, for me, was a peek into his process. T: “You know it is such a grind. You can get tired. You can feel like you don’t want to keep doing certain things over and over again. In my experience, a lot of artists can get into a really small clique, especially in place like Michigan, where there isn’t a huge industry. You get your circle of friends who agree that you are great. And you don’t really move beyond that or try something to do something new or breakout of that circuit. It was seeing that and you don’t want to be complacent in your art. You want to keep going, not just for financial achievement, but to be a better artist. To be a better human. And that idea spoke to me.”

A Savior is Born: The Rise of the Rebels 02 - A Cage Big Enough for Hundreds

Shani knew what it meant whenever she was escorted back to the dormitories and her files were pulled up and changed. She knew what it meant for the administration to remove her arm cuff, explaining to her that the government had given her a full scholarship for the rest of her studies. When her record was expunged and she was allotted a grace days to recuperate and get back to her regularly scheduled classes with her tuition and lodging paid in full and no sign of the unjust sentence in her history, she knew.

They wanted her to shut up and move on. To just forget about not only what happened to her in the woods, but to the others. To Atlas. She tried to see if she could look him up whenever she got back to the library. The directory didn’t cover Wasteland citizens, so she had to give up after a few days. 

Since she now had free time, not having to work for her education, she decided to get a part time job, for a life skills practice and a few non-academic pleasures that weren’t covered in the tuition + nutrition supply. She started a beret collection, and learning various hobbies as a distraction from thinking about the woods every time she wasn’t involved with a school project.

She bought every single type of M&M that she saw in the store, then grabbed jars to separate them - all plain reds in a big jar, smaller jars for other reds - peanut, almond, etc, and the biggest jar had all of the excess red M&Ms of all sorts put into it. Then... she had several bags of several M&Ms that weren’t red. Researching what to do with them, besides toss them, she found a few recipes for cookies and other treats. Maybe this was a nice time to learn how to bake!

She went knocking on doors of other dorms in her building and nearby buildings, "Hi, I brought you some M&Ms cookies." and they're like... You know what idec. Yes, thanks. Because, the dorms weren’t where the rich students lived. It got her a few suspicious folk, but mostly, people were grateful for something to eat that wasn’t a strict and cheap meal or an even cheaper and far less appealing meal paste. It was the first time that people seemed to begin liking her.

She thinks about getting a tattoo, but they're ridiculously unsafe and very expensive, so instead she gets a tattoo art piece, which is a realistic painting of your body part with a tattoo on it. It's relatively costly, but safe, and hers is an Atlas tattoo, holding the world on his shoulders, on her back, because Atlas had had her back.

She researches Atlas and then goes and finds Greek mythology books in the useless books depository, and takes on learning about it as a hobby. Greek mythology, baking, school, part time job doing data entry, and collecting berets. It kept her occupied, though her mind was frequently on what happened. Months had passed, years were beginning to. She thought for sure that one day, her pain had to be numbed and so she tried not to harp on it. But, how do you just forget somebody who was willing to throw away their life for yours?

18 marked the legal age of adulthood. Shani immediately had a job, right out of school as an interpreter and translator. She was hired at a firm that also allotted her to take more college level courses to advance herself in the field and she began saving up for a place in the city that wasn’t a job related lodging when she had the most important appointment set up for her that she would ever have.

“Hi. I’m Shani, I’ll be helping you today with your assessment. Have a seat.” The wasteland woman looked at the chair that Shani gestured to and smiled, her canines showing and the smile wider than Shani was comfortable with. “Ummm... Sit down?” The woman laughed and nodded. 

“Have a seat. Sit down. Yes. Yes, that makes sense. It took me a moment. You might guess, the wasteland isn’t very prim and proper.”

Shani didn’t want to talk about the wasteland. Instead, she began typing into her computer, “So, Miss... Free... What is your first language?”

“I don’t believe that you have a word for it. I’ll call it wolfen. I doubt it is in your machine.” 

Shani furrowed her eyebrows. “No. I’ve never heard of that before. Where did it originate? If you know...” 

“Hmmm... The Epic of Gilgamesh, maybe.” 

Shani frowned and clasped her hands over each other. “Ma’am. What is this meeting about?”

“I remember you, but you don’t remember me. It’s because you didn’t see me. You didn’t know to look for me. But, I knew to look for you. I’m here, because I have finally found you... Did you think it was right? For them to come in that way? They sent us food. We ate, then they attacked and took my people, took your people, took the wolf with the hair like flames...”

“What are you talking about?” Shani whispered.

“Your mate. He was torn open, then he tasted blood. He became as we are. Not fully, but enough. He became a man who is no longer a man, a man who is now a wolf.”

“Atlas.”

“They took my people. They took your people. You.. were special, somehow. You didn’t go where others went. Why were you special? Why were you spared?” Shani had never considered that she had been either of these things. She lamented over Atlas for so long, she figured that she, too, had been made to suffer. “They were taken to a cage. Some as beasts, some as feed. You were taken to a cottage, and given gifts. Are you a queen?”

“Far from it...” Shani tried to remember what happened in those moments. She vaguely recalled a voice saying, “She was falsely accused. She shouldn’t have been there in the first place, much less get taken to the Kennel. She’s got an arm cuff. She belongs to somebody.” The school. She had been property of the school. She still owed them money and had their equipment on her person, to indicate such...

Her schooling was paid off, not as a means to keep her quiet... but to keep the school quiet. To ensure that they got what she was worth and not ask questions about potential damages she faced while serving a bogus sentence. Sure, she made the most of that, but it had less to do with her and more to do with money.

“They... took them to a cage?”

“A cage big enough for hundreds.”

Tears poured from her eyes and Free took the initiative to offer the woman’s own tissues to her, as she must’ve forgotten that they were on her desk, in her... emotional release. Shani snatched two and tried to clean her face up. They took Atlas to a prison?  “A prison! They... took Atlas to a prison?”

Whenever Free said this, her dark brown eyes glowed amber and at that moment, Shani knew. This... is a wolf. This woman is what she described. A person who is not a person, but a person who is a wolf. “They took everyone there. Everyone but us.”

NOTES: I enjoy the idea of Free being far removed enough from human society that she doesn’t know anything about mannerisms and only has a limited amount of English, that she’s picked up since she’s been scavenging through the wasteland, but that she’s smart (I’d say the smartest wolfen in the series), and she’s adaptable and quick. She’s like a wolfen counterpart to Shani, and that’s why they eventually get on so well. They’re in similar positions, but with vastly different backgrounds. @tiarathief (You are still the first name that comes up whenever I at somebody. so...the last year has been rough. for everyone. but i’ve been lucky in a lot of ways, especially with the people in my life, and i wanted to take a second to thank some people on here. because genuinely, you guys mean so freaking much to me. i’ve had a lot of online friends in my life but none that feel so much like family. these are the people who have carried me through the last year, who’ve made me feel seen and heard and supported me in all my endeavors and just been wonderful to me all around. i love you guys, and happy new year <3
