Migratory bird lives are in grave danger due to light pollution

This is the ammount of dead birds collected in Toronto, Canada over the course of one night by the group FLAP (Fatal Light Awareness Program).

Migratory birds in particular are really succeptible to artificial light at night because they have clearly defined flyways. Meaning they follow preferential paths when going from one place to another in their migratory journey. Over different places in the world.

They often use moon light and the stars as part of their navigational system. They need dark skies to do this. If they see the light of the city in the distance they might be drawn off that migratory path. If they come to the cities and find some lights that seem similar to the ones they find in nature it dissorientes them, confuses them, and might end up in them never getting to their destination and dying trying.

Many of those who die, die flying into the windows of buildings that have lights lit in the inside or the windows that are reflecting artificial sources of light on the ground.

FLAP raises awareness and shows how important it is to reduce the amount of light we use at night and using window glazing that is less reflective and it is not attractive to birds, to protect bird species.

FLAP along bird researchers estimate that yearly around the world billions of birds die in these while passing across all the cities and places they fly by.

These species are already under stress from climate change, habitat loss due to human activity and other influences. We need to support their populations by reducing these hazards.

How is artificial light at night affecting wildlife?

The effect is significant and in some cases fatal for certain species.

Insects are declining in their population around the world. Especially pollinating insects. Studies show declines in these populations world wide. This is significant for humans because pollinators are crucial at ensuring food supply around the world. They perform ecosystem services collecting pollen and moving it around plants. Which if done by humans alone would represent a huge challenge.

Many of these pollinators are only active at night.  Half of insect species are nocturnal.  They are attracted to the light and stay away from the plants they would otherwise pollinate. It also makes it difficult for insects to find potential mates at night. Affecting their population over time.
