Everyone Forgot About These Cool Concept SUVs | HotCars

As one of the greatest segments in the auto sector, there's an awful lot of VEHICLE concepts that get first showed every year. The idea of putting away a concept is to explore a brand new design or feature, even though many certainly not make it to production . Nevertheless, it allows design groups to push the package of what's possible within the auto world and consider approaches that wouldn't are already practical with a production design.
RELATED: May Tragedy That These Incredible Idea Cars Never Made It In order to Production
Manufacturers have examined all sorts of crazy ideas for SUVs, from putting V12 engines under the hood in order to cars inspired by helicopters. Even so, with so many new ideas being debuted all the time, it's simple to forget about these brilliant devices. Some of them debuted twenty years back, but some were only revealed last year and have already been overlooked about. So , strap within and get ready for a whistle-stop tour of the best SUV principles that enthusiasts should make certain they know about.
10 Spyker D12 Peking-to-Paris

Via Supercars Net
Ill-fated overall performance manufacturer Spyker made a number of incredible cars before income issues forced it in to bankruptcy. The D12 has been one of their best, with a five hundred hp V12 engine packed under the hood of this impressive SUV.

Through Motorchase
In today's market, the 500 hp SUV can be quite normal , but in 06 when the concept debuted it had been too unusual to generate a lot interest. As such, Spyker by no means managed to rack up enough purchases to put the car into creation. It's a shame, as the D12 promised to be something special and would have been completely ahead of its time experienced it made it to clients.
9 Aston Martin Lagonda All-Terrain

Via Aston Martin Media
Aston Martin lately released their first VEHICLE, the DBX. It's in no way a bad car, but it's actual hardly the runaway achievement Aston needed it to become. Perhaps this second VEHICLE will be more lucrative for the brand name.

Via Aston Martin Media
This Lagonda idea debuted in 2019 with the time Aston said these people planned to have it within production by 2022. Since that time, things have been quiet from them, but at least this examine car has the looks plus presence to stand out. Contemporary SUVs have been accused to become samey, but the Lagonda All-Terrain proves it's very much feasible to create something completely unique but still look stunning.
7 Mitsubishi Mi-Tech

Via Arkansas Lakes Auto Mall
It's an instead divisively-styled SUV, but the cause it's cool is that it signifies a brief period where it appeared as if Mitsubishi would become fascinating again. Since the end from the Evo Lancer, the brand name has become more and more vanilla, along with cars that get more forgettable with each update.

Via Pinterest
The Mi-Tech was the opposite of that, a dune buggy crossed by having an SUV that has no roof or doorways. It certainly wasn't quite, but it was the most distinctive thing Mitsubishi had develop in years and it's an extremely cool idea in its personal right. Sadly, it seems you can find no plans for any type of the production version of the Mi-Tech.
7 Mercedes-Benz Ener-G Force

Via Mercedes-Benz
Manufacturers such as Mercedes have faced plenty of criticism for turning their particular SUVs into soft, highway-spec cruisers rather than the all-terrain automobiles of old. Well, the particular Ener-G Force concept shows Merc can still make a great off-roader, even if it's just in prototype form.

Via Car Entire body Design
It's a sort of futuristic raised G Wagen, although oddly enough it's actually supposed to be a police vehicle . Created for the Road Patrol Vehicle Design Problem in 2015, the car should really enable officers to navigate any terrain quickly plus safely. To be fair, the majority of criminals would think twice about working if this thing drove upward behind them.
6 Range Rover Variety Stormer

Through Pinterest
Most car fans which think of a two-door sports coupe Range Rover will envision the Evoque, but in truth, the brand came up with the concept way back in 2004. The product range Stormer was a regular Range Rover but reshaped to make a more streamlined, sportier silhouette.
RELATED: These Modified Property Rovers Look Insane

Through Pinterest
The idea did actually achieve production a full 14 yrs later as the SV Sports coupe, but it was axed soon after its debut due to lower demand. The Range Stormer furthermore wins the prize for your most confusing concept title, as its full title will be the Land Rover Range Rover Range Stormer Concept. That may be one heck of a chew.
5 Audi AI: TRAIL Quattro

Via Audi Media
It's hard to believe that this is really an Audi and not some crazy provide dreamed up by a lover , but in fact, that is a real concept. Originally revealed in 2019, the car was designed to be a re-imagining of the contemporary off-roader, using a cabin comparable to a helicopter to give optimum visibility.

Through Audi Media
It also features 2 hammocks instead of rear chairs, which are fully detachable therefore can be brought on hikes in to the wilderness. All in all, it's probably the most unreal concepts Audi offers ever made, although so far there has been no word on whether anything at all like it will ever go to production.
4 DS Aero Sports activity Lounge

Through Muzli Search
It's not the most unrealistic of concepts, but the DS Aero Sport Lounge contains large amount of unusual lines plus shapes that make it very interesting for a regular SUV. Really seemingly the antidote towards the masses of similarly-shaped crossover blobs that currently flood the particular streets. It's worth observing that DS is the upmarket brand that sprouted through Citroën, a manufacturer currently famed for its unique styles.

Via Vehicle Body Design
It also has an uncommon amount of screens, with the front side grille being replaced using what appears to be a customizable screen panel. That opens up a global of possibilities for motorists to personalize their vehicles, perhaps even adding messages for their grille to communicate with vehicles around them. Depending on the actual driver has to say, that may not be a good thing.
several Mercedes-Maybach Eyesight Ultimate Luxury

Via Mercedes-Benz
When the Mercedes-Maybach GLS SUV debuted in 2020, most people aside from a few rappers were not impressed . It was good, yet reportedly felt quite stagnant to drive and some early testers even reported quality manage issues.
RELATED: 4 Ultra-Luxurious Maybachs Suit For A King (4 Rolls-Royces We'd Rather Own)

Through YouTube
This Ultimate Luxury Idea should hopefully right those people wrongs, as it's apparently being put into production within the next year or two. It's a gorgeously over-the-top truck that's everything the Maybach should be: lavish, impacting, and fit for a california king.
2 Toyota FT-4X

Via Pic2 ME
The new Kia Bronco has picked up lots of hype, and it's clear to see the reason why. It's essentially alone in the class, being a small yet capable SUV. That's why Toyota's FT-4X concept is a cool conjunction with the landscape: it's one from the few compact 4x4s which could actually compete with the Bronco.

Via Japanbullet
The idea debuted in 2018, so that as of yet, there's been simply no confirmation whether a creation version will go ahead. Really likely the company is waiting around to see how successful the particular Bronco is before choosing to launch a rival of their own.
1 BMW X5 Le Guys

Via THE CAR M
It's been almost completely overlooked by car fans, yet this X5 is perhaps one of the coolest SUVs available. It came from the period when SUVs were starting to take off, in 2k. At the time, it was a section that was seen as quite slower and boring, but the X5 LM changed all that.

Via BMW Meters
BMW's engineers fitted the car using the V12 engine out of the McLaren F1 competition car . It produced 700 hp and a massive 531 lb-ft of torque. To help make things even more fun, the particular X5 LM was rear-wheel drive and used the six-speed manual transmission. So far as enthusiast cars go, that is pretty much a holy grail mixture. In a family SUV. Obviously, the LM was merely a design study and never obtained anywhere close to production. It can still the most powerful THE CAR SUV ever made, with the present X5 M only producing 600 hp.

THE TOP 25 MODELS TO COME, ACCORDING TO CAR AND DRIVER

The American magazine Car and Driver recently published its list of 25 models that deserve to be expected over the next few years. We’re going through this fine selection of vehicles with a grain of salt.
Ah yes, don’t think that these 25 upcoming models are the only ones planned for the next 3-4 seasons. Even though the pandemic is currently affecting the entire industry, the automotive world is preparing for what’s next… and the resumption of production as soon as possible!
Chevrolet Corvette Z06 2022
According to the publication, the next level of Corvette is expected in 2022. We can expect a multiplication of versions of the model, which, it should be remembered, now uses a centrally located engine. Over the years, Chevrolet has introduced us to several liveries of the sports car, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the ZR1 badge coming back. For this future Z06, a naturally aspirated V8 engine is probably the solution, while on-road performance is likely to be more spicy.
Porsche 718 GT4 RS 2022
Still in the ultra-sporty segment, Porsche is busy pushing the limits of its most affordable coupe even further. After the GT4, the RS badge would theoretically end the career of this generation of the coupe. The 4.0-liter naturally aspirated 6-cylinder flat-bed engine is expected to be more muscular than ever in this track-ready car.
McLaren 765LT 2021
This “longer” evolution of the 720S (LT stands for Long Tail) has already been unveiled on the web. So we know many details about the final version, because even the pictures are available. What is certain is that the 765LT will certainly be even more formidable than the 720S. Lighter than the 720S, the 765LT will also be more powerful thanks to a 755-hp twin-turbo V8 engine. Its arrival is expected before the end of the year.
Aston Martin Vanquish 2024
Let’s stay in the UK if you don’t mind, as Aston Martin is also preparing a metamorphosis of its entire line-up.
Obviously, the DBX SUV is the number one priority for the next few months, but after that, the British firm’s engineers will have to focus on moving the majority of sports cars to a mid-engine configuration. After the Valkyrie supercar, the automaker intends to market a Vanquish with a turbocharged V6 engine and electric power assist. Yes, even Aston Martin cannot escape electrification.
Maserati MC20 2021
There’s also something new at Maserati, the Italian automaker, which is already working on a mid-engine sports car powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine that could, according to the magazine, surpass the 600-horsepower mark.
And since the Italian firm has already indicated its intention to electrify its entire fleet, it wouldn’t be surprising if the MC20 receives a hybrid powertrain and even a pure electric one a little later in its lifecycle.
BMW i8 M 2024
Despite the mixed success of the BMW i8, Car and Driver believes that the Vision M Next prototype (see photo) presented in 2019 shows what to expect from the i8 replacement.
For now, it is too early to confirm the return of the i8 name, but what is certain according to the publication is that the manufacturer is preparing a sequel to this first exotic plug-in hybrid. And this second opus would be more focused on high performance. However, patience will be needed, because this future BMW, a half-petrol, half-electric vehicle, is expected in 2023 at the earliest.
GMC Hummer 2022
The American giant made a lot of noise earlier this year by unveiling part of the snout of the first all-electric pickup truck for GMC. Not only is this a first for GMC, but the division has chosen to bring the Hummer name back to the market. The manufacturer even announced a 1,000 horsepower and extra-long range.
Competition is beginning to take shape in this niche of electrically-powered pickup trucks.
Tesla Cybertruck 2022
In fact, if there’s one American manufacturer who knows how to attract all the attention to its products, it’s Tesla! And the brand founded by Elon Musk also made a lot of headlines last year with the presentation of the Cybertruck, the most unusual van in history with a triangular design that leaves no one indifferent.
Just like the GMC Hummer, the Tesla Cybertruck promises breathtaking accelerations thanks to powerful engines and very interesting autonomy.
Hyundai Santa Cruz 2021
We’ve been waiting for this one for a long time. Hyundai presented its Santa Cruz prototype in 2015 and its arrival is finally scheduled for 2021.
This first foray by the Korean giant into the mid-size pickup segment will in a way follow the model first introduced with the Honda Ridgeline, the Japanese pickup based on a monocoque architecture, unlike the other vehicles in the category, all perched on ladder-type chassis.
4-cylinder powertrains are also to be expected for the Santa Cruz, which will be positioned as a leisure van rather than a real work tool.
Ford F-150 2021
Speaking of pickup trucks: the world’s best-selling pickup truck is set to receive a light sweep for the 2021 model year, as several make-up prototypes have already been seen on North American roads.
So this is not a design revolution, but rather a revision of exterior usage. Under the hood, several powertrains will be back, but the arrival of a hybrid version is expected, while Ford has already revealed its intention to tackle the electric niche, thanks to the partnership with Rivian.
Car and Driver is also looking into the future of the Raptor, which, with the arrival of the Ram Rebel TRX, could benefit from a supercharged V8 engine borrowed from the Shelby GT500. The Ford F-150 should continue to dominate for a few more years to come!
Jeep Grand Cherokee 2021
The current generation of the 4×4 has been in service since the 2011 model year. Although it has aged very well over the seasons, Grand Cherokee is in need of renewal.
We can expect a few mechanical changes under the hood of the SUV, as well as a new architecture. The Daimler Chrysler-era skeleton will be replaced by Alfa Romeo’s Giorgio platform. What’s important is that the Grand Cherokee retains its 4×4 status as part of an all-utility vehicle lineup.
Kia Sorento 2021
Earlier this year, the Korean automaker unveiled the new generation of the popular crossover. While the design is evolving timidly, it’s under the hood that the Sorento presents itself in a new light. Indeed, with a hybrid powertrain and two other four-cylinder engines, Kia seems more serious in its approach to taking sales away from the competition.
Genesis GV80 2021
So far, the Genesis division hasn’t really managed to establish itself in the collective imagination with its three sedans, despite the qualities of the latter and the many prizes they’ve won.
Perhaps a superbly crafted crossover will make up for that. The GV80, as its name suggests, is the elevated equivalent of the G80. However, the SUV offers an entry-level 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, while a twin-turbocharged 375-hp V6 completes the lineup. The GV80 also consolidates the brand’s new language.
Lexus LQ 2022
A quick look at the Lexus alignment confirms that the manufacturer is well represented in all segments. Unfortunately, buyers of large SUVs don’t necessarily need a genuine 4×4 like the LX (essentially a dressed-up Toyota Land Cruiser).
That’s where a more comfortable SUV inspired by the LS limousine would fit in. The Lexus LQ would fit into a segment occupied by the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5s of this world and could even aim higher with a livery tattooed with the F badge.
Lincoln Mark E 2022
Ford’s luxury fender has already indicated that it wants to partner with Rivian in the development of a future all-electric SUV. Here, the name is purely fictitious, but as Car and Driver indicates, with an electric powertrain, the name Mark E seems appropriate.
Still, you’ll have to be patient in this case, as his arrival is expected in 2022.
Land Rover Defender 80 2023
To keep up with the current trend for off-road-flavoured utility vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover may be tempted to emulate Ford, which is about to launch the Bronco and Bronco Sport at the same time, the latter being only a scaled-down copy of the former.
Land Rover has just relaunched its legendary Defender, but this model is not for everyone. A Defender 80 (read smaller) could fill the coffers of the brand supported by the Indian giant Tata.
Audi Q4 e-tron 2021
For the past year or so, Audi has been offering its North American customers the e-tron SUV, the vehicle that has recently been joined by the Sportback penchant.
Unfortunately, both of these models are expensive, a detail that could be corrected by a smaller electric crossover. The Q4 e-tron prototype unveiled in 2019 also looks very close to a production model, suggesting that the Q4 – which is based on Volkswagen’s SEM platform – could come along quickly next year.
Alfa Romeo Tonale 2021
If there’s one manufacturer on this list that needs help, it’s Alfa Romeo. Despite the Italian manufacturer’s glorious past, sales figures were simply not taking off, even before the current pandemic.
The arrival of the Stelvio, the brand’s only utility vehicle, certainly helped, but a more urban and accessible model inspired by the Tonale concept would be welcome these days, especially with a hybrid powertrain as promised by the prototype.
Toyota Corolla GR 2022
Rumors have been around for a few years, but it seems the time has finally come for Toyota to add a little adrenaline to its Corolla lineup.
While it’s clear that the Yaris GR introduced earlier this year is a strictly European affair (our North American Yaris is a Mazda2 in disguise), the Corolla could benefit from the Yaris GR’s turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. With 257 horsepower, a Corolla GR equipped with a six-speed manual transmission – and everything needed to keep up with the road – could take a few sales off a certain Golf GTI.
Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing 2021
When GM announced the end of production of the large CT6 sedan last year, many fans wondered what would happen to the new twin-turbo V8 engine also known as the Blackwing. It seems that the 5.5-litre block isn’t compatible with the new CT5 sedan, as Car and Driver claims that this Blackwing variant will be powered by the good old 6.2-litre supercharged V8 previously used in the CTS. Better yet, the publication states that the car will be available with a six-speed manual transmission or the 10-speed automatic unit. Despite the confusion in the nomenclature, this CT5-V Blackwing 2021 is sure to be a track bombshell with 650 horsepower!
Hyundai RM20 N 2023
The Korean giant has already been working on this mid-engine sports car project for several years. And it looks like the idea is about to be approved for series production.
As mentioned by C&D, Hyundai’s senior management is reportedly still studying the option of transferring the project to the Genesis side. However, performance enthusiasts are leaning towards Hyundai, as a car sold under the popular brand is likely to be more affordable than the same architecture at Genesis.
Hyundai might be about to bring back the concept launched by a certain Renault 5 Turbo in the 80s, and that’s very exciting!
Mazda6 2023
Launched in 2013 as a 2014 model, the current Mazda6 was already positioned as a sedan with high-end aspirations. Since then, the manufacturer has been constantly looking to raise the level of its vehicles, as if it wanted to move to the luxury side. The next 6 could even come to play in the big league, as it’s rumored that the car will be equipped with a 6-cylinder inline-drive and even a rear-wheel drive architecture. Any questions?
Acura TLX Type S 2021
All indications are that the next Acura TLX will be decidedly more competent on the road than its predecessor. The current TLX isn’t bad, but it lacks that spark to worry the class leaders. Chassis work and a new twin-turbo V6 engine should contribute to a little more passion for this long-awaited return of the Type S badge.
Nissan 400Z 2021
One of the oldest cars on the road is a Nissan. The 370Z was launched in 2009, which explains its slightly more archaic driving experience. With Nissan’s economic and financial turmoil, the addition of a niche sports car is certainly not the brand’s priority at the time of writing, but for Nissan’s fame, the rebirth of the mythical Z is necessary.
The Infiniti Q60’s twin-turbo V6 engine is expected to be the chosen engine to power the 400Z, while it’s likely that buyers will still have the choice between a manual transmission or an automatic unit. As for design, it’s rumored that the next Z will be largely inspired by the original 240Z. It looks promising!
Ford Fusion Active 2022
The manufacturer of Dearborn has abandoned the traditional car in North America, with the exception of the Mustang and the Fusion which persists for a few more months. However, it seems that the brand’s decision-makers want to tackle the Subaru Outback with an elevated wagon based on the Ford Mondeo.
It should be remembered that originally, the Ford Focus Active was supposed to cross the Atlantic, but this project finally fell through. This Fusion Active could correct the situation and bring a so-called car back to the continent, despite its utility side.

Hottest cars of 2020 that turned cold due to Covid-19

A total Ferrari production halt on March 14 included production of the 611-horsepower, V8 Roma, which was supposed to roll into dealerships toward the end of the year. By Hannah Elliott and Kyle Stock At least three years and about $1 billion. That’s roughly what it takes to make a new vehicle, from drafting table to dealerships. Car companies live and die by that long-range gamble—but every once in a while, the bet coincides with an economic disaster. The coronavirus pandemic and its attendant recession may be the worst time to launch a car since, well, since we’ve had cars. Selling a Model A was a tough task during the Great Depression, but at least dealerships were open and some assembly lines still humming. The global auto industry of 2020 is witnessing an unprecedented, near-instantaneous drop in demand as potential customers steer clear of car lots, and dealers close up shop to comply with public health mandates. Volkswagen, Honda, Hyundai, and Mazda each reported a more than 40% decline in U.S. sales last month. For the year, S&P expects global auto sales to plummet almost 15%. For sales of the most anticipated cars of 2020, the timing couldn’t be worse. In a normal economy, the first few months for any shiny new machine are relative magic. Overeager customers clamor for the fanciest, most profitable versions, and dealers seldom have to offer discounts or incentives. Now, every sale (done online or over the phone) will be considered a coup. What’s more, the newest machines aren’t just grocery getters—they’re the result of product decisions made during one of the industry’s hottest streaks—the fruits of bull market research and development. Many are bold bids for incremental business, niche cars that might not have received a green light in a shakier economy. Among them are a few futuristic electric vehicles, which suddenly must contend with some of the lowest gas prices on record. Others are six-figure speed machines that were banking on Wall Street bonuses and swelling stock markets, neither of which seem likely in 2020. What follows are some of most needle-moving whips rolled out in years—all for a pre-coronavirus world. With would-be buyers now focused on the grave crisis at hand, this is less a preview of automaker glory than a wistful look at what might have been. SUVs The much-anticipated new Land Rover Defender launches this year with the historic brand’s manufacturing sites shuttered. While the vehicle’s release remains on schedule, the first media test drives planned for April were predictably canceled. The good news for the British automaker though is that the off-road rig, a stalwart of British royalty for four decades, got a fair amount of publicity last year: The Defender’s official debut took place at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show, and it has been making the rounds on Instagram ever since. Along with the Defender, the reborn Ford Bronco is one of the most hyped vehicles in years. In 1996, Ford parked the Bronco name (which dates back to the mid-1960s) after O.J. Simpson provided the worst kind of publicity. In subsequent years, the seminal SUV became a design icon and collector’s item as Jeep took over ownership of the off-road adventure market. We were supposed to see the new Bronco on April 2, but its debut has been delayed. In North America alone, the pandemic is destroying $12 billion in potential sales each week while scrapping 331,000 vehicles that would otherwise have come off of assembly lines, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Still, U.S. automakers like Ford hope the second half of 2020 will allow them to make up some lost ground. Crosstown rival Chevrolet has turned to Trailblazer, a nameplate that’s been defunct in the U.S. since 2009, to carry its newest, small, crossover SUV. With an optional three-cylinder engine and a sticker price below $20,000, the little rig is aimed at young, outdoorsy folk. Chevrolet, however, already has three smallish SUVs to sell. Moreover, Kia is aiming for the just-right-size SUV market with its new Seltos, another middle child in a big family. The Seltos began selling in the U.S. in February, before the coronavirus shutdowns began in earnest. For now, the machine is coming from factories in Korea, which are still running. Aston Martin’s make-or-break DBX, another latecomer to the luxury SUV game, is the first of its kind from the 107-year-old brand. The automaker first showed the 542-horsepower DBX at the L.A. Auto Show in November 2019; media drives were planned for May. Those have been postponed and production at all the company’s manufacturing sites halted. Meanwhile, Aston Martin doesn't have working capital and still desperately needs the SUV to deliver drivers. The global crisis and its effect on demand may leave the company in a very bad place. Spokesman Nathan Hoyt says the vehicle’s U.S. launch remains on track for the second half of the year. In the more opulent tier, the upcoming Mercedes Maybach GLS 600 SUV will compete against Bentley's Bentayga and Rolls-Royce’s Cullinan. It has a V8 engine that churns out 550 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque, plus a 48-volt “EQ Boost” system that helps smooth out all that power. The machine was scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in the second half of this year. But with Mercedes manufacturing at a standstill, it’s too early to say if that will remain the case, says a Mercedes representative. Electric Vehicles When it comes to futuristic electric vehicles designed for an $80-a-barrel world, Tesla products remain at the forefront, though the company has remained tightlipped about timing, given current events. The all-electric flatbed Cybertruck that almost broke the internet when it debuted last year is one hanging in the balance. The Blade Runner-style vehicle boasts driving range estimates of up to 500 miles and a zero-to-60 mph sprint of 2.9 seconds. Production is tentatively slated to begin in 2021, and Tesla is already taking deposits, but all this could change. Though initially unwilling, Elon Musk eventually shut down his California factories last month. That shutdown also applies to Tesla’s Model Y, a compact electric SUV the company started delivering to customers in March, but has yet to be seen in the wild in significant numbers. Rivian Motors set out to do for SUVs and trucks what Tesla had done for electric sedans. It promises its R1S will be able to travel 400 miles on a single charge, drive through three feet of water and zip up to 60 mph in three seconds, all with Costco-capable cargo space. Rivian was planning to deliver its first SUV late this year; at the moment, its facilities ate shuttered, including the former Mitsubishi plant in central Illinois, where it was mapping out assembly lines. Ford has also been hustling to finish its Mustang Mach-E, an all-new, all-electric vehicle whose November debut won broad praise for checking three critical boxes: good looks, long range, and performance specs that best gas-powered pony cars. Now, dozens of early versions are cycling among the world of Ford engineers, who disinfect each before continuing work. Pre-coronavirus, Ford said that the number of deposits for the machine was sizable, with a greater-than-expected share from drivers who had never owned a Ford. An additional electric offering has experienced unlikely progress: Against all odds, the fastback Polestar 2, Polestar’s second vehicle and first all-electric car, started production on March 23 at Zhejiang Geely Holding’s plant in Luqiao, China. First unveiled in February 2019 as a fierce potential rival to Tesla, the Polestar 2 produces 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque, with an estimated range of 292 miles. It remains unclear, though, how many units will be produced or when deliveries might begin. Last month, BMW “e-revealed” the BMW i4 Concept, which had been slated to premier at the since-canceled Geneva Auto Show. The company has yet to show the production version, but it’s expected to be an all-electric sedan that uses an 80-kilowatt-hour battery to get 530 horsepower and 372 miles of driving range. Despite the current closure of BMW production plants, the i4 is expected to start selling toward the end of 2021. Says spokesman Thomas Plucinsky: “We don’t anticipate any delays.” Sports Cars Spurred by a heady stock market, super expensive, super fast sports cars were enjoying a moment until March arrived. Porsche had big plans to roll out the 640-horsepower, muscle-y 911 Turbo S version of its franchise machine with group media drives. Instead, the company delivered the 640-horsepower machines one by one via fleet drivers prepped on disinfection and social distancing. Porsche’s German manufacturing plants in Zuffenhausen and Leipzig have been silent since March 21, and Porchce Experience Centers in L.A. and Atlanta, where the Porsche-curious take test drives and track lessons, sit empty. The $225,000 Ferrari Roma super car debuted in November in, of course, Rome. But a total Ferrari production halt on March 14 included production of the 611-horsepower, V8 Roma, which was supposed to roll into dealerships toward the end of the year. Ferrari hopes to eventually make up for the lost production with additional shifts. “No material impacts on deliveries and waiting list are foreseen at the moment,” a spokesperson says. Over in England, the $1.7 million McLaren Elva super car packs a punch: 804 horsepower on a V8 engine and rear-wheel drive. It’ll do zero to 124 mph in just 6.7 seconds, which makes it faster than its sibling, the track-suited Senna. McLaren had planned to build just 399 of them, each one customized through the company’s special-ops MSO division and delivered at the end of 2020. “We will continue with all possible design and engineering activities that we can at this stage,” says Roger Ormisher, vice president of communications at McLaren. The carmaker will “then finalize physical development once staff are back at MTC, with the plan to deliver Elva into production as close as we can to Q4 2020.” Finally, Lotus is trying to piece together its first new vehicle in more than a decade. The machine, dubbed Evija, is stunning—and costs $2.1 million. Shaped like a spaceship with trimmed sides and massive wheels, it boasts nearly 2,000 horsepower generated from four electric motors, as well as a zero-to-60 mph sprint of fewer than three seconds. Only 130 will be built by the legendary U.K. automaker. As for when they will be built, that will be determined later. Production has halted at Lotus’s Norwich headquarters while engineers continue tweaking designs from home. “The vehicle development process is as it was—just not in the offices,” says Rob Borrett, a company spokesman. Super car architects, it turns out, are just like the rest of us. They Zoom. Read the full article

2021 Aston Martin V12 Speedster First Look: James Bond Meets Top Gun
You can almost hear the slap-bass opening before the chugging guitar riff lights up and driving drumbeat kicks in and Kenny starts to croon: Revvin’ up your engine/Listen to her howling roar/Metal under tension/Beggin’ you to touch and go … Highway to the danger zone …
OK, this 2021 Aston Martin V12 Speedster features a specification inspired by the F/A-18 Super Hornet rather than the F-14 Tomcat that starred in the original Top Gun movie. But with a 700-hp twin-turbo V-12 under the hood, a 186-mph top speed, and no windshield, this $950,000 hand-built roadster, one of the most extreme Aston Martin road cars yet, is designed to deliver fighter-pilot thrills without leaving terra firma.
Sensible? Not for a second. But that’s the whole point. Created by “Q by Aston Martin,” the company’s bespoke customization service, the V12 Speedster is a living show car, Aston says. Just 88 of them will be built, with deliveries to customers beginning in the first quarter of 2021.
The Specs
The V12 Speedster is built on a unique platform that combines elements of the bonded aluminum structures that underpin the DBS Superleggera and the smaller Vantage, along with various bits of mechanical hardware. Suspension is multilink all around, with coil springs and adaptive damping that can be switched between Sport, Sport+, and Track modes. Wheels are 21-inch forged center-lock alloys, and brakes carbon ceramic, with 16.1-inch rotors up front and 14.2-inch units at the rear.
In addition to that headline-grabbing 700 hp, the Aston Martin–designed 5.2-liter twin-turbo V-12 pumps out 556 lb-ft of torque. Not quite the epic 715 hp and 664 lb-ft the engine makes in the Superleggera, but still grunt enough to make the lighter V12 Speedster two-tenths of a second quicker to 60 mph, completing the sprint in just 3.5 seconds according to Aston Martin’s figures.
The transmission is the familiar eight-speed ZF automatic used in every other modern Aston apart from the manual transmission Vantage, and the drive is funneled earthward via a limited-slip differential. A specially designed stainless-steel exhaust features centrally positioned twin pipes exiting through the rear diffuser.
The V-12 engine was a core part of the Speedster’s design brief, Aston Martin design director Miles Nurnberger says: “This car has been created to deliver an incredibly visceral experience. That’s why it is a V-12 rather than a V-8. We are amplifying all the emotional strings that we can to the absolute maximum.”
Carbon-Fiber Bodywork and Jet-Inspired Styling
All hardware is wrapped in a unique body created almost entirely from carbon fiber under Nurnberger’s direction. He says the V12 Speedster takes a very different approach to the forward-looking designs of the DB11 and Vantage models. Instead, the V12 Speedster glances back, with nods to historic Aston race cars such as the 1953 DB3S, especially around the midsection of the car, plus the 1959 Le Mans–winning DBR1, echoed in the low-slung grille and the streamlining humps behind the driver and passenger seats. The intake vent at the leading edge of the hood recalls the iconic DB4/DB5/DB6 road cars.
In many ways the V12 Speedster could be viewed as basically an update of the CC100 Speedster Concept shown by Aston to celebrate its centenary in 2013. But the surfaces are tauter, the body sections more muscular, and it’s not entirely a look in the rearview mirror: The front graphic is very contemporary production Aston, and the rear wing with an integrated light is a clever nod to the rear-end graphics of both the current Vantage and the forthcoming DBX SUV.
Fighter jets? The bodywork that runs between driver and passenger separates the open cockpit into two teardrop-shaped voids that look ready for a pair of F/A-18 canopies. The clear housings on the humps behind the occupants amplify the effect, and they allow you to see the custom full-face helmets stored there—mandatory wear if you plan on driving the V12 Speedster above 20 mph and want to return with your face intact.
This particular V12 Speedster is also shown in a technical “Q by Aston Martin” color and trim scheme inspired by the F/A-18. The exterior is finished in Skyfall Silver, with satin black on the exhaust tips, vents, and grille. The interior features dark satin dark chrome, machined aluminum, black leather, black technical textile, and black carpets, with strategically placed contrasting bright red straps echoing the “remove before flight” ribbons you see dangling from a parked Hornet. And in case you miss the gag, there are tiny F/A-18 logos and silhouettes on the doors and dash.
With all that power and dynamics tuned by Aston chassis whizz Matt Becker and his team, the wind-in-your-face Aston Martin V12 Speedster promises to be quite a ride. Do you feel the need?

Report: Aston Martin shelves all-electric Rapid E to focus on SUV Aston Martins four-door electric sedan has run out of juice, and will be cancelled before it makes production, suggest new reports sourced via insiders at the company. The electric Rapid E was Aston Martins foray into the world of electric vehicles, and was supposed to feature a battery-powered electric motor in place of the gasoline versions 5.9-litre V12.The project was unveiled in 2015 as a concept with production to start in 2017, but now plans to build the vehicle in even limited numbers have been shelved. The Rapid E will not collect dust on said shelf, however. Instead, the RapidE will be used as a development mule for future electric powertrains, a source close to the Rapid E told Autocar. No customer cars will be built, and all 155 planned models will be cancelled. Aston has not expressly said whether refunds will be issued. Effort that would have been spent on the electric vehicle will instead be channeled toward the DBX, Aston’s first SUV. Powered by a conventional V8 engine (for now) the DBX will better take the place of the sedan, as buyers seem to have shifted towards more capable off-road-style vehicles. The DBX will start deliveries in the second quarter of 2020. 2019 was not a banner year for the British brand, and share prices fell to an all-time low of four pounds sterling, down from a 17-pound-per-share price when it first went
