#Attempting to force a limiting framework on the term in regards to how it should apply to others is both stupid and insulting

Equal parts fascinated and exhausted to see the discourse surrounding transspecies. Mostly, I simply feel inclined to tiredly huff.
If you believe you can define the term transspecies in a way that adequately covers every possible configuration or understanding of the idea: You cannot. Trying to do so will inevitably leave some by the wayside. Refusing to acknowledge and proceeding regardless will cause more harm than good to people you both know and don't know.
This term as utilized by me and the experiences it represents for me are not for others to understand, and I will certainly not deign to fit into any pathetic universal definition or ontology that is presented to me. It's a personal, potentially private understanding first and foremost, and perhaps for many even solely: some understand this fact. Some do not.

Integrated Approaches to Human Resource Management (HRM): Theoretical Frameworks for HR Strategy
The integration of economic reasoning into Human Resource Management (HRM) practices and vice versa has gained increasing attention as scholars attempt to bridge the gap between these two traditionally distinct disciplines. While these efforts have been limited in practice, several significant frameworks and theoretical models demonstrate how economic principles can inform HR strategy and how HRM decisions can be analyzed through an economic lens.
Tumblr media
In this discussion, we will explore two primary examples of integrated approaches to HR strategy: first, the selection of HR practices through the lens of economic theory, and second, the internal labor market theory. By examining these models, we can understand how HR strategies are shaped by both market forces and internal organizational dynamics, as well as the inherent challenges in attempting to reconcile short-term economic rationality with long-term strategic flexibility.
1. Selection of HR Practices: Market vs. Hierarchy
The selection of HR practices is fundamentally based on a broader decision-making process that involves choosing between market mechanisms (outsourcing or hiring external talent) and hierarchical control (developing internal talent or retaining employees within the organization). This dichotomy between "make" (internal) and "buy" (external) decisions is crucial in determining how organizations approach workforce management.
Kaufman (2004) argues for the necessity of a more rigorous economic analysis when making these decisions. He suggests that firms must consider the marginal costs and marginal benefits of adopting certain HR practices, similar to how economic models like the Cobb-Douglas production function assess the cost-benefit analysis of input usage in production. In this framework, HR practices are evaluated by their potential to enhance productivity or efficiency, and firms will only adopt these practices when the marginal revenue they generate exceeds their marginal cost. For example, an organization may decide to invest in high-commitment work systems (HCWSs) or training programs if the return on investment in terms of improved employee performance or reduced turnover is greater than the costs associated with implementing these systems.
However, this economically-driven framework introduces a degree of skepticism regarding the universal applicability of "best practice" HR bundles, such as the idea that all organizations should adopt high-commitment systems. By framing HR practices in terms of cost-benefit analysis, this approach challenges the assumption in HR literature that certain HR practices are universally beneficial. Instead, it posits that the effectiveness of HR practices depends on the specific economic context and the unique circumstances of the firm. Some firms may not adopt high-commitment systems because the costs (e.g., higher wages, extensive training, or increased managerial oversight) may outweigh the benefits for certain types of businesses, particularly those operating in highly competitive or low-margin industries.
Despite its insights, this approach is limited by the assumption that the costs and benefits of HR practices are both known and calculable. In reality, many factors—such as the long-term impact on employee morale, the strategic flexibility of the firm, or the ability to respond to future labor market needs—are difficult to quantify. This is particularly true for firms seeking to maintain agility in an unpredictable business environment, where strategic flexibility and the ability to develop new capabilities over time may be more important than immediate cost savings. Wright and Snell (1998) and Purcell (1999) have both argued that long-term HR strategy should prioritize building the capacity to respond to future needs, rather than focusing solely on short-term economic efficiency.
2. HR Architecture Model: A Resource-Based View
A more comprehensive approach to integrating economic theory and HR strategy is found in the HR architecture model developed by Lepak and Snell (1999). This model draws on several economic and organizational theories, including the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm, human capital theory, and transaction cost economics. Together, these theories help explain how firms make strategic decisions about workforce management by categorizing different types of employment relationships into four distinct modes: internal development, acquisition, contracting, and alliance.
The HR architecture model is based on two key variables: the value of skills and the specificity of skills to the firm. These variables determine the appropriate HR strategy for managing different types of employees, depending on the strategic importance of their roles and the level of firm-specific knowledge or expertise required.
Internal Development: For employees with high-value, firm-specific skills, internal development is the preferred strategy. These employees represent a critical asset to the firm, and their knowledge and expertise cannot easily be replicated by external hires. Consequently, firms invest in their development, offering long-term career paths, extensive training, and opportunities for growth within the organization. This approach is consistent with human capital theory, which posits that investments in employee development yield long-term returns in the form of higher productivity, loyalty, and innovation.
Acquisition: When the required skills are valuable but not firm-specific, firms may choose to acquire talent externally through recruitment or hiring. These employees possess high levels of expertise or technical skills that are essential for the firm’s performance, but their knowledge is not unique to the organization. For example, an organization might hire an experienced IT specialist or marketing expert from outside the firm to address specific skill gaps or to inject new perspectives into the business.
Contracting: In cases where skills are low in value and not specific to the firm, contracting or outsourcing is a common strategy. These tasks can often be performed more cost-effectively by external service providers, and there is little need for long-term investments in employee development. Many organizations outsource routine administrative tasks, customer service functions, or maintenance services to third-party providers, focusing their internal resources on more strategic activities.
Alliance: Finally, for employees or partners with high-value but not firm-specific skills, firms may form alliances or strategic partnerships. This approach allows firms to access critical expertise or resources without fully internalizing the costs of development. Alliances can be particularly valuable in industries where collaboration and shared innovation are important, such as in technology or pharmaceuticals.
The HR architecture model provides a more nuanced view of how firms can tailor their HR strategies to different segments of their workforce. By considering both the value and specificity of skills, firms can make informed decisions about whether to invest in long-term employee development, acquire external talent, outsource tasks, or form strategic partnerships. This approach also aligns with the resource-based view of the firm, which emphasizes the importance of leveraging firm-specific resources and capabilities to maintain a competitive advantage.
Conclusion: Towards a More Integrated HR Strategy
The integration of economic reasoning into HRM practices offers valuable insights into how firms can optimize their workforce strategies by balancing market forces with internal organizational needs. While traditional economic models like the Cobb-Douglas production function provide a useful framework for analyzing the costs and benefits of HR practices, they are limited by their focus on short-term, quantifiable outcomes. By contrast, more integrated approaches, such as the HR architecture model, offer a broader perspective that accounts for the value of firm-specific skills and the strategic importance of long-term employee development.
Ultimately, successful HR strategy requires a careful balance between economic rationality and the need for organizational flexibility, innovation, and employee commitment. By adopting a more integrated approach, firms can not only improve their operational efficiency but also build the dynamic capabilities necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing business environment.

Nerds and Baseball
With the baseball season going fearless, it's an ideal opportunity to outline how nerds and progress have changed the sport of baseball. Over the extent of propelling decades, the web, supportive advances, and the globalization media have on an astoundingly significant level traded how fans gobble up baseball and how ballplayers play America's bit of elbowroom. Coming up next is a blueprint of a scramble of the tendencies where improvement has affected baseball, and two or three thoughts on how some new advances will keep impacting baseball baseball sam levinson .
Baseball, Technology, and Fans
1. PC games
From the most dependable starting stage organize, PC games have attempted to go over baseball. In 1971, Don Daglow at Pomona College made ''Baseball.'' During the mid 1980s, Atari and Mattel what's more discharged baseball PC games. In 1983, Mattel discharged Intellivision ''World Series Baseball.'' For the principle experience, players of ''World Series Baseball'' could utilize varying camera centers to show the development. A gamer could see the player from a changed "focus field" camera, see baserunners in corner insets, and view wary plays from a camera behind home plate. ''World Series Baseball'' in addition joined fly balls into their interface.
In 1988, baseball PC games made another ricochet, when Electronic Arts (EA) discharged ''Earl Weaver Baseball'', which merged a genuine baseball manager gave run by man-made scholarly capacity. The disparaging of ''Earl Weaver Baseball'' was seen by Computer Gaming World in 1996 when it named ''Earl Weaver Baseball'' 25th on its outline of the Best 150 Games of All Time. This was the second most crucial planning any games game in that 1981-1996 period behind FPS Sports Football.
Nintendo similarly hit a wonderful sledge, in 1988 when it discharged ''RBI Baseball.'' RBI was the standard PC game to be upheld through the Major League Baseball Players Association. The game contained genuine tremendous class players and records, and clearly was a goliath hit with players.
Twenty years after the central baseball PC game, ''Tony La Russa Baseball'' showed up on racks the nation over. The game made significant enhancements in ball game play. In any case, ''La Russa'' joined an aberrant Fly Ball Cursor that showed up where the ball was going to land, and made or diminished in size subject to the stature of the ball. On the off chance that the breeze was blowing the cursor would move its territory to mirror the changing course of the ball. The Fly Ball Cursor demonstrated authentic fly balls and pop-ups to PC ball games, disposing of the last bit of the game that had never been imitated completely. Second, ''La Russa'' permitted clients to sort out drafts and set up their own classes, all with access to the game's broad player estimations. Third, ''La Russa'' was the significant ball game to offer exact nuances for every individual pitcher against every individual hitter, information that certifiable chiefs utilize extensively more shocking than broke. Rather than different games monster names who fundamentally attributed their names to games, Tony La Russa ate up wide sessions over a time of years endeavoring to make the game's modernized sense as cautious as would be sensible.
Ball games has kept making since ''La Russa.'' The headway of EA's ''MVP Baseball'', Sony's ''MLB The Show'', Out of the Park Developments' substance based diversion ''Out of the Park Baseball'', and the and improvement of gaming frameworks (from Genesis to XBox360) has changed the centrality and truth of ball games. Purpose of actuality, even players themselves confess to utilizing them plan for games. As showed by a FHM article made by 2004 AL Cy Young Winner Johan Santana (April 2006 pg. 113), "I can see the hitting zones of every player and quantifiably where he was unable to think about the ball. I can in like way find when he will swing at fastballs and when he may not expect a switch up. I wouldn't express that I would add to an individual an authentic game an in every way that really matters unclear way, yet it gives you contemplations of how to progress toward unequivocal hitters."
2. Web Fantasy Baseball
Seriously despise it (lady mates, life partners) or love it (basically every baseball fan), dream baseball has become as standard as the game itself. Decisively when urged to detail addicts who distressingly picked and facilitated everything in division, the advancement of the web has permitted endless fans to investigate association with sidekicks and different fans all through the nation. This couldn't in any way whatsoever effect the ensured game itself right? Wrong. Dream Baseball hugy impacts fan intrigue. Did your party quit mid-season, or at present in an unwatchable fixing year? That is OK. You can at present follow your dream gathering and can keep watching games including your players by procedures for the MLB Baseball Cable Package. Fundamental League Baseball is a thing, and anything that permits your clients to unendingly dismember, make, and talk (in this manner advancing) about your thing in an excited way gets huge.
Dream baseball would not have gets remarkable without progress. PCs and the web demonstrated this games upset. The closeness of shocking PCs and the Internet changed dream baseball, permitting scoring to be done absolutely by PC, and permitting classes to build up their own scoring structure, ordinarily dependent on less noticeable bits of information. Taking everything into account, dream baseball has gotten a kind of in-time redirection of baseball, and permitted different fans to build up a consistently pushed awareness of how this present reality game limits.
As showed up by an impelling Fortune article, the "American male's fixation on sports is old news, yet give this a shot: More than half of inventive character sports darlings experience over an hour dependably simply thinking about their gatherings." Fantasy baseball is a ''billion dollar industry.'' However, Much like the RIAA and MPAA, Major League Baseball is putting cuts on the dream progress that filled fit baseball's recuperation after the 1996 strike. MLB has chosen to in a general sense re-attempt how it licenses affiliations that run dream games on the Web. Official licensees will now likely be limited to a Big Three of ESPN, CBS Sportsline, and Yahoo! (a couple of reports interweave AOL and The Sporting News other than). "Mother and pop" shops that helped usher the dream baseball wonder into reality will be truly obliged by the permitting bargain. They might be permitted data to help 5,000 clients each. Every single other individual utilizing baseball estimations to run little dream classes should pick between reducing their endeavors, setting up camp, or getting a visit from MLB's legitimate supporters.
3. Client Created Media
Going before the web, media creation was obliged to authorities. Papers, radio, TV, and quality games magazines like Sports Illustrated had a virtual stranglehold over the dispersal of sports news and data.
The key client made games media happened with the approach of Sports Talk radio. An improvement of talk radio, which has existed since the 1940s, sports talk radio took off in the mid 1980s. Today, more than 30 basic games talk radio broadcasts exist all through the nation. Sports talk radio gave fans a soapbox to voice their grumblings, assessments, and assessment of sports. Regardless, instead of seething just to their loved ones, sports talk radio attracted fans to transmit their ways to deal with a possibly epic party.
Requiring a voice, sports fans utilized progress to scatter their assessments over the web. The first of these advances was sports messageboard structures. While sports messageboards have never arrived at standard certain quality, they have a strong closeness on the net. A driving force imperative "baseball messageboards" in Google will return over 8.5 million hits.
Web messageboards other than looked out for the first Petri dish for client made media. This supposition that is best exemplified by a lack of regard that happened around the start of the 2000 season. Bobby Valentine, by then the New York Mets chief, gave a discussion at the Wharton School of Business - an "unpretentiously" talk. Regardless, "unnoticeably" is just a term gigantic to writers. While the ''Daily Pennsylvanian'' (Penn's school paper), gave a shallow caution to the talk, one understudy part went in a general sense further. Brad Rosenberg, utilizing the username brad34, ventured onto a Mets message board and declared that Bobby V influenced a couple of players and the pros. The essential press put it all out there; by then head official Steve Phillips skiped on a plane to Pittsburgh to pow-wow with Valentine; and minor shame was in progress.

At the point when Singaporeans purchase property, they for the most part anticipate that its worth should increment after some time. This ascent in worth or cost is known as capital thankfulness, and is one key approach to make cash out of your property.
For example, if your house was worth $500,000 when you gotten it and is presently worth $900,000, that is capital energy about $400,000.

All things considered, it is critical to pay special mind to factors that can support more prominent capital thankfulness some place not far off, for example, up and coming MRT stations or framework upgrades.
The second key approach to make cash out of your property is through rental pay.
To discover your rental yield, essentially include all the rental salary you'd win a year, and after that convert it into a level of your property estimation.
So for example, in case you're purchasing a $800,000 property and leasing it out for $5,000 per month, you'd acquire $60,000 of lease every year. Your rental yield would in this manner be 7.5% ($60,000 x 100/$800,000).
Clearly, the higher the rental yield the better, as it implies you'll be getting a higher profit for your venture even before you sell the property. Numerous purchasers likewise channel lease got into paying their home advance.
What influences Singapore property costs?
Regardless of whether you've until now been putting resources into stocks, gold, ETFs or creator totes (hello, we never said you must be keen to be contribute), your essential objective is equivalent to some other investor's—to get back more cash than you initially spent on the speculation.
With regards to the property advertise, that implies purchasing when costs are low or if nothing else sensible, and selling when they're higher.
Keeping that in mind, it's helpful to know six main considerations that influence Parc Clematis property costs in Singapore:
1. Area and framework
Improved vehicle framework, or the structure of close-by comforts like shopping centers, noticeable schools and open libraries can push up property costs. When in doubt, improved vehicle foundation particularly can hugy affect property costs particularly with regards to new MRT stations inside strolling separation.
2. State and state of the property
The state and state of the property, particularly when it is old, can influence the price tag. On the other hand, in the event that you as of late revamped your property in a satisfactory style, that can warrant an ascent in your asking cost.
3. Rent
Quite a bit of Singapore's private property is leasehold, with the most widely recognized rent length being 99 years. As time barrels towards the last part of a rent you can anticipate a sharp drop in the estimation of the property. Freehold property holds its worth much better after some time, however is significantly progressively costly to buy forthright.
4. Loan costs
At the present time, loan costs in Singapore are extremely low for Parc Clematis. That implies you it costs less to apply for a new line of credit when you purchase a home. When in doubt, higher loan fees will in general demoralize individuals from purchasing property, which negatively affects costs.
5. Government strategies
The legislature can venture in whenever with arrangements intended to affect property costs. The cooling estimates they set up starting in 2009 have smothered costs extensively.
6. Monetary atmosphere

Confinements and cooling measures in Singapore
So as to debilitate hypothesis, the administration has set up specific decides that make it less gainful for individuals who are undercutting their properties in the term, or who wish to purchase numerous properties.
When assessing a potential property venture, know about the accompanying cooling measures:
ABSD – Extra Purchaser's Stamp Obligation
ABSD should be paid on the off chance that you are as of now the proprietor of a current property and wish to purchase another, or on the off chance that you are not a Singapore native. ABSD rates are as per the following:

The measure of cash you can obtain from the bank is topped by (in addition to other things) the TDSR, which directs that your absolute month to month reimbursements of your home advance and some other advances (counting charge card obligation) must not make up over 60% of your pay.
Accordingly, it is a smart thought to abstain from getting into Mastercard obligation or taking out weighty advances like vehicle credits just before you are going to apply for a home advance. Utilize our adding machine to perceive how much advance you can get dependent on TDSR.
LTV – Advance to-Esteem Proportion
The LTV proportion, similar to the TDSR, forces confines on the amount you can obtain from banks to fund your property buy.
Dissimilar to ABSD, which is attached to the quantity of properties under your name, LTV proportion identifies with the quantity of exceptional home loans you're overhauling. The more home advances you have to support, the less you can obtain from a bank.
On the other hand, regardless of what number of properties you claim, insofar as you've paid them off completely you can obtain the most extreme sum.
There are somewhat various principles for HDB and private property buys. On the off chance that you are buying a HDB level, these LTV proportions apply for bank credit residencies as long as 25 years. In case you're purchasing private property, it's for residencies as long as 30 years.
For HDB concessionary credits, the advance bit is up to 90%.
Should your bank credit residency be longer than that, or if your obligation will eat into your retirement years (age 65 and up), the LTV proportion will be littler so you can get less.
Property charge in Singapore
Property is an extraordinary resource for have in Singapore, yet you should impart a portion of your riches to the state. Property is saddled distinctively relying upon whether you are a proprietor occupier (ie. you are living in the property being saddled) or not.

Before you dial that realtor number you found on Facebook, realize that is by all account not the only method to discover property. Most Singapore purchasers search for reasonable properties from https://www.propnexsingapore.com/
Note that on online property entrances, costs are quite often lifted on the grounds that the merchant anticipates that you should arrange.
You can likewise discover property postings as our forefathers would have done it, by glancing through the classifieds segment in the papers. In any case, as less and less individuals are publicizing their properties along these lines, the majority of your exploration should at present be done on the web.
Deals dispatches
In case you're searching for shiny new property to buy, you should investigate deals dispatches being held by engineers, for the most part before development on the property has even begun. You'll have the option to take a gander at models and fake up pictures of the property.
The buy procedure of uncompleted property is any longer than it is for finished or resale property, as you will pay in stages as the property is being manufactured.
This additionally implies you won't probably procure rental pay for the property until it is fit for empty belonging, which may be a very long time after you've made the downpayment.
Property barters
These can a decent spot to get a decent arrangement. You should simply discover where closeouts are occurring, and afterward turn up face to face to offer.
The merchants are typically either banks that have abandoned property, or venders and designers who are attempting to dispose of property quick.
There will be a couple of properties set available to be purchased at every occasion, and a save cost will be set, showing the most minimal satisfactory offer.
Ensure you do your value explore before offering on a property, as save costs are not in every case fundamentally lower than what you may discover available.
Property operators
The laziest method to discover property is to procure a property operator to take the necessary steps for you. Specialists can scout for properties as per your criteria and after that ship you around in their autos for viewings.
The primary drawback is that you'll need to pay the specialist commission, normally about 1%, in the event that you are procuring them to represent you in your ability as a purchaser.

Sexual Violence
Sexual violence is a serious problem impacting millions of people every year. Sexual violence is defined as any sexual attempt to obtain a sexual act through violence or coercion. Sexual violence may be physical, verbal, visual, or anything that forces an individual to engage in unwanted sexual contact. Every 92 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Every 9 minutes, that victim is a child. 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. About 3% of American men, or 1 in 33, have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime (Dutton, C. E., 2013).
Badour and Feldner (2016) discuss the evidence that has emerged concerning the common reaction to sexual victimization, linking it to Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Evidence suggests that disgust is more common than fear in the face of repeated exposure to sexual assault. This specific study filled the gap that exists between the disgust associated with distress and the anxiety that comes with repeated exposure (McPhail, 2016). These views on sexual violence are linked to the feminist and mainstream opinions on the issue of sexual violence, hence influencing the research that Badour and Feldner (2016) conducted.
Power Theory
Created by D. Keltner and colleagues, approach or inhibition theory assumes that having power and using power alters psychological states of individuals. The theory is based on the idea that most creatures react to environmental events in two habitual ways (Matthews, K.C., 2017). According to Foucault's comprehension of power, power is based on wisdom and makes use of knowledge; on the other hand, power multiplys intelligence by shaping it in accordance with its anonymous purpose. Power reproduces its own fields of exercise through understanding. (Hearn, J., 2009). Susan Brown Miller (1975) has been credited with the current view of rape as a power issue (Bevacqua, 2000). (Miller,1975) gave a comprehensive history on the aspect of rape not being about sex but men trying to dominate over and degrade women. The analysis resulted in a radical feminist consciousness among previous and future victims of rape, as females became more open and honest about their sexually-violent experiences. The connection between sexual aggression and male domination promoted a new-found openness among victims. Therefore, the feminist connection between power and sex came to influence the everyday language and view of sexual violence and the framing of the issue as per the law.
The first feminist act of breaking the silence was the replacement of the term rape with sexual assault. Feminists emphasized sexualized violence as a way of expanding the scope of the female experiences regarding sexual violence (McPhail, 2016). The research also explores a study by Amy Chasteen’s (2001) on the daily understandings of sexual assault and demonstrates their relevance to the growing feminist movement in the process. Furthermore, the law expanded the definition of sexual violence to cover the non-sexualized physical assaults, linking sexual violence to all other types of violence that are perpetrated against women. Regardless of the popularity of the power-not-sex theory by Miller (1975) and the way it influenced the feminist movement, it remained to be contentious among other feminists. There were tensions over the causes of sexual violence and the relationship to heterosexuality, which resulted in the “feminist sex war” (Bracewell, 2016). Other feminists such as Catherine McKinnon (1989) and Andrea Dworkin (1974) have suggested that rape and heterosexual sex cannot be separated, as sexual violence is embedded in the normative nature of heterosexuality. Contemporary feminists have also raised the issue on the difference between sex and violence (Gavey, 1999). Most authors have also noted that society has theorized the normalcy of male perpetration of sexual acts of violence that the regular male sexual behavior should also be recognized as sexual violence. McPhail (2016) further argues that a singular theory, the use of violence as the sole explanatory framework, may not account for the different ways that sexual violence occurs, and it cannot address the intersectionality of the oppression. However, regardless of the attitude on sexual violence, many feminists agree that it is a form of oppression that perpetuates the efforts of men to rally against women. Lastly, the article notes the prevalence of sexual assault, the regularity, and the ways in which it manifests.
Trauma
Authors Irina Anderson and Kathy Doherty, sought to establish the association between sexual assault and trauma. These two aspects have been credited to the rising state of feminism among women, especially victims of sexual assault. This effort is aimed at challenging the notion that sexual violence is a rare phenomenon despite its prevalence even in schools and colleges. Feminists and other researchers have been in continuous efforts to dispute the assumption of the insignificance of sexual violence and how it affects women (Anderson & Doherty, 2008). Twentieth century feminists, Ann Burgess and Lynda Holmstrom, were vocal against the trivialization of sexual violence by showing the negative ways that rape impacted the females who were affected, naming it the “rape trauma syndrome”. Rape Trauma Syndrome (RTS) is the term given to the response most victims develop because of rape. It is vital to mention RTS is the natural response of a psychologically healthy person to rape trauma so symptoms do not constitute mental illness.
Drawing on the analysis of the article, Decou, Kaplan, Spencer and Lynch, (2018) used 164 female undergraduates who had been exposed to any form of sexual assault. Burgess and Holmstrom compared victims of rape to those of combat veterans and discovered that the kind of trauma that the victims of rape experienced was similar to that of veterans who went to war. As a result, sexual violence has been added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders V (DSM5) as a factor of stress in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
The creation of a relationship between sexual violence and trauma has allowed for the growth of feminism among women, especially the victims, as there is a new realization that effects of sexual assault can be severe. The new-found realization of the impact of sexual violence diminishes the previous beliefs that it is ‘no big deal’ (Gavey & Schmidt, 2011; Tseris, 2013). Nevertheless, the relationship between sexual assault and trauma and its identity as a disorder has resulted in sexual violence being taken up individually and medically.
Heterosexism
Many studies have correlated poor mental health outcomes and external heterosexism and PTSD (Symanski and Moffitt, 2012). Earlier, Russel and Richards (2003) found that LGBT persons were prone to assault and discrimination and internalized heterosexism in response to legal proposals by the state aimed at limiting the rights of this demographic. People from the LGBT community who were committed to relationships internalized heterosexism than same-sex couples with legal protection (Riggle, Rostosky, and Horne, 2010). Szymanski and Mikorski (2016) concluded that internalized heterosexism resulted from internalized minority stressors that manifested in internalized heterosexism, emotional reticence, stigma consciousness, and sexual orientation concealment.
Pansexual women are more likely to experience adverse mental health problems such as PTSD than straight women (Straub et al., 2018; Brown and Pantalone, 2011). Similarly, heterosexual individuals report less mental problems than LGBT individuals do (Marshal et al., 2019). Meyer, Scwartz and Frost (2008) posited that lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB) and transgender women (LGBT) were traumatized and victimized often on a national, community, and individual level. Brown and Pantalone (2011) found this demographic to be experiencing macro-aggression from people and institutions from early in life but heightened during adolescence. Robinson and Espelage (2013) found adolescent LGBT women to be at higher risk than heterosexual women of experiencing physical violence and bullying thus contributing to trauma.
Living in a discriminatory environment can have its toll on people particularly heterosexuals. Women in this demographic were found to internalize the messages about their sexual identity thus developing minority stress (Meyer, 2003; Gerrity and Peterson, 2006). Peterson (2006) found the internalized homophobia and the minority stress to be highly correlated with low self-esteem as the heterosexual individuals took on negative views expressed about their sexuality. Although experiencing trauma does not necessarily result in the development of PTSD (Nievergelt et al., 2018), sexual assault and discrimination result in higher rates of PTSD relative to other traumatic experiences (Gold et al., 2009). Furthermore, women develop higher levels of PTSD compared to men after exposure to traumatic events (Simmons and Granvold, 2005; Kubiak, 2004; Snipes et al., 2017). Further research is crucial given the high rate of sexual attacks on LGBT women, the pathogenic influence of the assault, and the vulnerability to developing PTSD. It is essential to research issues that influence LGBT women to recover from sexual assault and consequently reduce or prevent the development of PTSD.
Moral Concerns
Domestic violence and violence between couples cause traumatic experiences on those involved and other dependents (Merssermith et al., 2017). Despite the growing awareness of the vice, the practice continues to increase. Reasons for the growth of this practice results from the difficulty in treating the perpetrators (Christensen, 2018). The authors posit that the devastating effects of violence against one’s partner on children and the society coupled with the limited success in treating abusers develop the need to identify effective means of treatment.
Violence against one’s partner can be described using the attachment theory, also known as the psychodynamic theory (Keiski, et al., 2018). Psychosocial theory, frustrations theory, and interpersonal theory further explain the violence (Bowman et al., (2015); Lindgren, (2017); Bryan e al., (2017). However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2009), domestic violence results from cultural and social norms or expectations of behavior within a specific social or cultural setting. Often unspoken, these norms offer unique standards, acceptable or inappropriate, that coordinate our intersections with others (Durlauf and Blume, 2008). The preference to conform to others expectations thus gives rise to the cultural and social norms (Lewis, 2002). While social and cultural norms do not necessarily correspond with an individual’s attitude or beliefs, they bring about the debate over feminism and the trauma the violence causes.
The treatment of domestic violence currently is by group format, and then followed by couple therapy (Tseris, 2013). However, while treatment works, Lindstrom and Eriksson (2011) recommend that besides medicine and psychology, medical professionals should also devise ways of prevention. Prevention is indeed key in physical health, but on emotional health, medical experts tend to relegate or postpone thus allowing for the development of PTSD (Tseris, 2013). In conventional treatment, the length of treatment varies from one week to one year and has no clearly established a correlation between time and treatment (Gondolf, 2002). With that, women were found to be helpless before, during the violence and treatment. Based on the social cycle theory, Walker (1999) developed a hypothesis that abusive relationships once established are repetitive. The author posited that helplessness, trauma and possible development of PTSD was dependent on how long the individual stayed in the abusive relationship and how “helpless” they were. The cycle also known as Battered Women Syndrome, consists of recurrent violence, avoidance of people, activities, and emotions, and hyper-arousal or hyper-vigilance as well as disrupted interpersonal relationships (Rakovec, 2014).
During treatment, group treatment, though ineffective, was found to be better than no treatment (Gondolf, 1997). However, men that completed the treatment phase were likely never to repeat compared to men who never attended counseling (Rosenfeld, 1992). Nonetheless, women are the most vulnerable due to the development of PTSD. However, not all women exposed to domestic violence develop PTSD. Coker et al., 2002; Thompson et al., (2000), found some women to be resilient to developing trauma. For those with PTSD, Bisson, and Andrew (2007) suggests that they should undergo psychotherapy treatment and receive empirical support. Also, a new treatment that includes exposure-based intervention has proven effective against PTSD (Resick et al., 2002; Resick and Schnicke, 1992). This treatment was developed specifically for victims of rape and sexual assaults but is being used to treat people with trauma.
Shame and Disgust
According to Campbell, Dworkin, and Cabral (2009), sexual assault increases the risk of developing PTSD. La Bash and Papa (2014) found the same to result to shame, while Ullman and Peter-Hagene (2014) correlated sexual assault to adverse social reaction. Øktedalen et al. (2014) defined trauma-related shame as negative evaluation of the self in the context of trauma. (Following, DeCou et al. (2017) linked trauma-related shame among victims of sexual assault to PTSD. However, Rogers et al. (2017) provided evidence to prove the association between general shame, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and suicide risk. Although the study was conducted among veterans, the author concluded that shame was indirectly related to suicide via thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness. However, there was a relationship between trauma-related shame and sexual assault. Badour and Feldner (2016) describe disgust as a rejection or revulsion response aimed at distancing an individual. Disgust follows from a traumatic event especially those involving sexual assault (Badour et al., 2013). Resick et al., (2008) posited that disgust offered insight into understanding PTSD for its unique cognitive, behavioral, psychological, and neurobiological activities. These attributes distinguish it from other emotions such as sadness, fear, and anger (Izard, 2007).
Following a traumatic event, victims are exposed to vomit, blood, and other bodily fluids that elicit disgust (Aunger & Rabie, 2004). They may also face death, violations, disease, or betrayal which can also cause disgust (Simpson et al., 2006). Within this context, disgust transfers to trauma. This type of conditioning further facilitates the unique qualities that distinguish disgust from other emotions (Olatunji et al., 2007). However, few studies link disgust to PTSD although scholars suggest that disgust based reactions following a traumatic event may result in cognitive-behavioral interventions (Jung and Steil, Jung, and Stangier, 2011; Badour and Feldner, 2018).

I Believe...
The article below offers a worldview, starting with an abstract philosophical foundation, upon which increasingly pragmatic structures can be built. The framework presented here is deliberately compatible with the political philosophy known as Social Futurism, although it is not part of Social Futurism, per se.
1. IDEALISM, & A VISION FOR HUMANITY
I believe that there is an ultimate “Good”, just as Plato did1. I believe that this Ideal Good is approached – but can never be truly reached – via non-attachment and selfless love. These ideas are the closest I come to religious Faith in the modern sense2, and they are most definitely views that would have been familiar to the ancient Greeks.
It is important to note that just because I believe in an Ideal Good, that does not mean I believe people to be naturally or intrinsically good, or that good things can be achieved without hard work, disciplined adherence to principles, and simply doing what one must, no matter how hard or complicated it may be. Good is an ideal – The Ideal in Plato’s framework – and as such it can only be imperfectly realized by human beings.
Once you understand my commitment to this ideal, you can follow the way I begin to translate that into a specific vision in my Transhumanity.net article, “A Vision For Humanity“.
2. BALANCE, REALITY, & TRUTH
In the everyday world of pragmatic concerns, I believe in balance. I believe that imbalance is a sign of irrationality and sickness. We are all imbalanced in many ways, at many times in our lives, but the critical virtue is the desire to understand one’s own situation and work toward a higher balance of some sort. I am tolerant, to the extent that anyone at least attempts to attain balance, but utterly intolerant of all that lays beyond that minimal expectation. Those who betray the very basis of intelligent toleration cannot themselves be tolerated.
I also believe we must acknowledge that Truth and Reality exist, even if they are imperfectly accessible to humans. Wilful ignorance is the ultimate embrace of imbalance and the dysfunction it engenders. Distorting reality (and disregarding all principle) to suit one’s own desires is vandalism, parasitism, and anti-social behaviour of the worst sort. Commitment to an Ideal Good requires commitment to Truth. That said, we must be aware that even complete fictions can (and often do) have very real consequences. When they are used for good, that can arguably be a justified, acceptable, or even necessary thing. When they are not used for good, then they represent a threat to civilization itself.
3. SPECTACLE/DIALECTIC VS. RADICAL CENTRISM
I believe that our society is governed by Spectacle; which is to say the modern equivalent of “bread and circuses”, designed as an array of deliberately false choices between options that don’t matter, and which only really distract from important issues. Coke versus Pepsi. America versus Russia. Sports Team A versus Sports Team B. Conservative/Republican versus Labour/Liberal/Democrat. Left-wing versus Right-wing.
Within the realms of politics and economics, I refuse to align myself wholly with Left- or Right-wing “camps” in any all-encompassing manner that forces me to abandon my personal commitment to principle. Such tribal affiliation, chosen without regard to (and often in direct contradiction of) evidence on an issue-by-issue basis, is intrinsically unbalanced, and thus effectively a disease of the individual mind and of society. Instead, I believe in having consistent principles, respecting the importance of evidence, and remaining committed to helping others where possible. Where that may suggest a Right- or Left-wing view on my part, then so be it.
For example, I believe that where individuals, groups, or indeed entire nations desire self-determination and are not harming others, then we should respect that desire. I am committed to that idea, as a matter of principle. It just so happens that it can variously be considered a Left- or Right-wing idea depending not only on who is judging, but also on which self-determination-desiring people are being discussed at any given moment. Similarly, although I do not believe in Marxist concepts such as “Class Struggle”, I do believe very firmly in the importance of proper respect and remuneration for the working class, and am aware that any number of views might be taken of where this places me on the political spectrum. I am not concerned with such labels, but am wholly committed to principle, and thus consider myself a Radical Centrist.
4. WHO YOU ARE IS WHAT YOU DO
It is a strange irony of our time, that just as technology draws us together into an ever-smaller “Global Village“, we humans seem determined to separate ourselves from each other. As the failures of Liberal Democracy become more and more apparent, both the Left and Right increasingly focus on divisive notions of “Identity Politics“, which is to say political thinking organized around the idea that your politics must inevitably and irrevocably be decided by your background, whether that background be characterized in terms of sexuality, economic class, age, physiology, language, ethnicity, culture, or any other factor.
I am a Transhumanist. As such, I seek to transcend the limitations of all such characteristics, through technology. Taken in combination with my commitment to Idealism (specifically to the Idea of the Good, and to a transcendent human civilization), this logic draws toward an inevitable conclusion: That true peace and unity can only be achieved if we fix our vision on a uniting future goal-ideal, rather than on the increasingly irrelevant divisions of the past.
But what is this “future goal-ideal”? If we are to transcend contemporary Identity Politics, then we must work toward a category of existence which transcends all of the current categorizations. In other words, we must become a new class of being: One defined not by the circumstances or constraints of its past, but by the future-vision it is committed to. I envisage a future humanity which spans an entire continuum of Personhood, from leadership in the form of godlike Posthuman, post-biological beings, to a citizenry of genetically engineered biological Transhumans, and beyond to a wider realm of guaranteed wellbeing for sentient beings achieved via Abolitionist technologies.
The future I want is one which achieves both unity and diversity… one in which all citizens may optimize themselves to best fulfill their chosen societal roles, and in doing so help bring society together. The unity of a civilization is defined by its ability to act as a single, coordinated unit in its growth and development as a living thing. In contrast to the many “inherited” political identities we know today, I foresee a kind of uniting, aspirational identity I call the “Ajati” (an ancient Sanskrit term suggesting someone not-born, made-rather-than-born, or indeed self-made).
The essence of this idea is that people do not need to be defined by factors beyond their control, but can instead grow into a new identity based upon their commitment to helping the community. In other words, your actions determine your identity. Who You Are Is What You Do.
5. SERIOUS GAMES
Taking these points together, the logical conclusion is my strident advocacy of Social Futurism. When we combine that with the views expressed here and here, the natural next step is to establish a foundation for my own path, moving forward. I would encourage everyone who feels some affinity with Social Futurism to create their own personal network of like-minded allies, so that we may all work together efficiently to forge solutions for a better future.

2Actually I am something of a Neo-Pagan, but I don’t tend to mention that in mixed company simply because people often leap to unwarranted conclusions and attack positions that I would never defend. For now, let’s just say that – as a matter of principle – I most emphatically do not believe anything that is contrary to reliable evidence (AKA Science). If you don’t know how I can be true to that stance and be a (Neo-)Pagan, then I’m afraid that you simply haven’t thought about it hard enough or done your homework, and are not ready for that conversation. I will not do your homework for you. On a similar note, I am interested in the Western esoteric traditions of alchemy and ritual magic, but approach such things in a rigorously rational, empirical, and scientific manner.

Morality of War: The Concept of War Crimes on Azeroth
TL,DR; A similar concept to our world's international humanitarian law exist on Azeroth and it defines war crimes, crimes against the very essence of sentient beings and crimes against Azeroth herself. Both the Horde and the Alliance accepted these rules and the judgement made based on them as legitimate.
Furthermore, law of war existed in our world for as long as civilization existed and even if we may find the older versions lacking or cruel, the idea of proper conducts of warfare is well engraved within human history.
When it comes to the matters of warfare, discussions often take a turn towards what is an acceptable, proper or honorable way of waging war and whether an act constitutes a war crime or not. In the particular instances where these arguments happen aboutWorld of Warcraft, there are intertwining sentiments filling up the debates: The belief that the concept of rules or laws of war did not exist in older times and the belief that even though we have them in real world, they do not have them on Azeroth. However, both of these assumptions are wrong, not only because in our world the rules of war has a history almost as old as war itself, but also because Azeroth has its own codified laws and courts dedicated to them.
For our world, rules attempting to limiting the most devastating effects of war existed pretty much as far as civilization existed: Many religious texts like Torah and Quran include specific rules about how to conduct warfare. Literary epics and romances like Mahabharata and Tale of Danishmend talk about what should and shouldn't be done in war as a matter of justice and honor. From ancient Greeks to medieval Roman Catholic Church (The peace and truce of God), there were always institutions, rules and declarations about what is the proper way to wage war and constant attempts to both spread and enforce these rules. Some of these rules may seem barbaric to us today, or inefficient at best, however, what cannot be disputed is the fact that they existed. And with them exist the very idea that there is an acceptable and an unacceptable way to fight wars that goes pretty much as far back as war itself.
With these in mind, we can turn our attention towards Azeroth: A fictional world of magic. Different and similar to our world in a wide variety of aspects, the most common assumption about this world is that since it is a magical world depicting some pseudo-medievalesque aesthetics, it must not have the concept of war crimes or crimes against sentient beings. This assumption has its roots in the misconception that war crimes and rules of war did not exist in the pre-industrial world. However, just like how our world always had some form of these laws , Azeroth too has its own version:
In the 2014 novel War Crimes by Christie Golden, we have the former Warchief of the Horde, Garrosh Hellscream, put on a trial in Pandaria for committing war crimes, crimes against the very essence of the sentient beings of Azeroth and crimes against Azeroth herself.
“Garrosh Hellscream. You have been charged with war crimes, and crimes against the very essence of sentient beings of Azeroth, as well as crimes against Azeroth itself. You are also charged for all acts committed in your name, or by those with whom you have allied.”
Chapter 5
Before this trial, Garrosh is already found and declared guilty of all charges and the trial is about determining what his punishment will be. It is basically a sentencing hearing.
His guilt is beyond question, but we will hold a fair and open trial to determine his fate, one that both Horde and Alliance will conduct, with the possibility of a reduced sentence—perhaps even liberty.
The August Celestials do not disagree that Garrosh Hellscream is guilty of terrible, grievous acts. I repeat—that he committed crimes is not in dispute. What must be decided now, however, is the manner in which these crimes are to be addressed. It is not that he must be accountable. It is how. And the only way to do this is through a trial. In this way, you, Horde and Alliance both, and any other voices who have aught to say will have a chance to be heard.
The Defender will argue for a more merciful sentence. The Accuser, of course, will argue for a more stringent one.
Chapter 2
During the trial, we also hear what exactly Garrosh is considered to be his crimes, and thus we are given a list of some things that are considered war crimes, crimes against sentient being and crimes against the world:
Genocide. Murder. Forcible transfer of population. Enforced disappearance of individuals...
Enslavement. The abduction of children. Torture. The killing of prisoners. Forced pregnancy...
The wanton destruction of cities, towns, and villages not justified by military or civilian necessity.
Chapter 5
Both the Horde and the Alliance participates in the trial and accepts its legitimacy, thus declaring the proceedings and the laws of the Pandaria court as internationally binding for both of them.
With these in mind, we have a framework of what constitutes war crimes/crimes against humanity/sentient beings on Azeroth. And it has quite a lot of similarities to our world's international humanitarian law, as well as some differences:
In our world, mistreatment of prisoners of war and civilians are considered war crimes and Azeroth also maintains these principles.
Genocide, ethnic cleansing, rape and other forms of sexual violence are considered crimes against humanity in our world and as of 2008 U.N. Security Council Resolution 1820, they are also considered war crimes. Azeroth defines these acts as crimes against the very essence of sentient beings.
Use of biological and chemical weapons are prohibited in our world. However, despite both the Horde and the Alliance leadership repeatedly expressing their displeasure and disagreement of their use, there doesn't seem to be any rules limiting the use of a specific weapon type, or at least this is not a type of crime Garrosh is convicted of.
In our world, three of the principles used to determine lawful conduct of warfare are distinction, military necessity and proportionality. In short, these terms mean warring parties must distinguish between combatants and civilians, military actions should be directed against military targets, attacks must be done with the intent of helping the military defeat the enemy and harm caused to civilians and civilian property must be proportional and not excessive compared to the direct and concrete military advantage anticipated.
With the charge of "The wanton destruction of cities, towns, and villages not justified by military or civilian necessity.", War Crimes shows that these same three principles also apply to Azeroth.
In our world, "planning, preparation, initiation, or waging of wars of aggression, or a war in violation of international treaties, agreements or assurances, or participation in a common plan or conspiracy for the accomplishment of any of the foregoing" is considered a crime against peace. However, no such charges were leveled against Garrosh. We can claim he was simply not found guilty of it, but the more likely reason is that the concept doesn't exist on Azeroth, despite the fact that many times Horde and Alliance blamed each other for starting wars.
In our world, acts of war crimes also follow the legal doctrine of command responsibility, which asserts a hierarchical responsibility for the actions of one's subordinates. By declaring that Garrosh is also charged for all acts committed in his name or by his allies, Azeroth too shows that they have a similar legal frame on this regard.
All in all we can conclude that Azeroth has its own version of international humanitarian law, and governs how warfare is conducted. Rules regarding the limits of the use of force, treatments of civilian populations and civilian property is well within its scope and even if it doesn't have the exact same rules and principles as we do in our world, there is definitely a similar concept which we can judge the actions of those participating in war.

Community Schools – success, scaling, sustain
With the nation’s economy and its families facing a host of crises, the community schools model may soon become even more relevant than it is today. That’s because this research-based reform transcends the classroom, seeking to provide students and their families with critical services they may be unable to otherwise afford—including “medical, dental, and mental health care services; tutoring and other academic supports; and resources for families, such as parent education classes, job training and placement services, housing assistance, and nutrition programs.” Three other pillars, in addition to such integrated services, are key aspects of the model: active family and community engagement and empowerment, expanded and enriched learning time and opportunities, and collaborative leadership. Yet a recent study co-authored by NEPC Fellow Jennifer Jellison Holme, an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin, raises questions about how well school districts are planning for the model. The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Education Policy, and it takes a magnifying glass to 32 proposals funded by the federal Full Service Community Schools grant program between 2010 and 2014. The plans are a rich source of information on how the reforms have been operationalized throughout the U.S., so the study provides insights about practices, sustainability, and how these community schools might fulfill the promise of the reform. If, indeed, the model expands from its current base of approximately 5,000 schools nationwide, how might educators and policymakers scale up and sustain a reform that has already been associated with improved student and school outcomes for low-achieving students in high-poverty schools? Before presenting the seven crucial questions framed by the study, we should note the study’s limitations. Because community schools are, by definition, unique approaches tailored to their home bases, it is difficult to use a broad brush to describe the reforms. In addition, the grant-funded programs are, at least according to technical criteria of the competition, among the stronger plans. (Just 5% of proposals were funded in 2010, the study authors report.) So the proposals are not necessarily representative of community schools as a whole. Nor can a plan on paper speak to the realities of on-the-ground implementation. With those cautions, let’s turn to the insights from Professor Jellison Holme and her five co-authors. Should classroom learning play a larger role? Most proposals aimed to improve student learning by delivering services outside of class time. In fact, nearly one in three proposals only provided academic enrichment after school. While such extracurricular services are important components of the model, enrichment should also take place through changes to classroom learning. How can community schools build more on community strengths? Although a few proposals highlighted neighborhood assets such as effective policy and advocacy work, most paid limited attention to the resources already present in the communities. The study authors note that it was natural for the applicants to emphasize challenges since they were seeking funding to address these challenges. However, they wondered if more applicants could also have highlighted community strengths. “If the leadership of these efforts is, at best, viewing families as blank slates or, at worst, viewing them as incapable and insufficient, this can diminish the collaborative elements of community school reform,” the authors write. Again, two of the four pillars of the community schools model concern collaborative leadership and the active engagement and empowerment of families and communities. How can community schools effectively coordinate with and among their many partners? The number of partner organizations in the proposals reviewed ranged from three to more than 80, with an average of 12. Keeping up with all these partnerships is almost certainly a full-time job—and the grant did require schools to hire a coordinator. However, the study authors note that this job is complex and challenging, especially in schools where teachers and principals are already facing challenges related to capacity. What is the right balance between grassroots efforts and top-down reforms? Community schools were originally conceived as grassroots efforts to create change while empowering communities. Yet just seven of the 32 proposals grew entirely or almost entirely out of grassroots efforts to transform schools. The remainder were either top-down, ambiguous in origin, or a combination of grassroots and top-down. Further, the proposals tended to grant less decision-making power to parents or small grassroots organizations than larger, well-resourced and/or well-established organizations such as school districts, the United Way, or the Boys and Girls Club. A natural outgrowth of scaling up reforms is that larger organizations such as school districts or national nonprofits may increasingly be involved. Yet if individual families and grassroots organizers end up getting pushed to the side, this could pose problems down the road. This is because research suggests that top-down reforms may be less stable and, as a result, less sustainable due to challenges related to buy-in and implementation. What resources are necessary to sustain the reforms and where will they come from? The study authors found that even the most detailed proposals provided limited detail on how they planned to sustain the reforms after the grant period ended. Plans also frequently noted that the applicants had the support of local leaders such as superintendents or school boards. Yet reliance on such leaders can be a double-edged sword if key positions turnover and newcomers are not champions. “Indeed, when we looked at the websites of the programs funded in 2010, we found that only about 50% of the schools from the 2010 grant cycle remain full-service community schools according to the website descriptions,” the study authors write. “Although we do not know the reasons why these schools appeared to move away from the model, it could be due to a failure to adequately plan for long-term sustainability.” This observation at the very least raises questions about how community schools might tap into sustainable, recurring funding sources without overly relying on one-time grants. In this regard, it is important to note that the Partnership for the Future of Learning published a valuable resource in early 2020 (just as this new study was also being published), titled Financing Community Schools: A Framework for Growth and Sustainability. How can the community schools movement more emphatically address broader structural inequities? The study authors write:
[C]ommunity schools policies are arguably one of the few efforts within education policy that directly acknowledge, and seek to address, the structural inequities that affect schools, in an era where other policy initiatives gloss over local contextual factors, or treat them as irrelevant.
Yet grant applicants faced obstacles created by the very inequities they were attempting to address. For example, one applicant received less than half the amount of per-pupil funding than the average school district in its state. Most applicants were also from racially isolated communities experiencing low tax bases and challenges related to housing, jobs, and transportation. The authors conclude: Community schools themselves can be one prong in a policy strategy to address these problems, but they likely will not succeed in isolation from efforts to address these broader issues. Indeed, failure to tackle structural inequality alongside community schools may leave this reform within a neoliberal paradigm where private entities step in to bring aid to schools, but which does not force the government and society to deal with the larger problem of inequality. In sum, although we applaud the community school approach as a promising solution to massive disinvestment in urban communities, it may not translate into longer term improvements in outcomes for low-income students and their families without coupling it to building capacity and agency within communities, or addressing larger structures of segregation and finance inequity.
7. Could more rural areas benefit from community schools? The study found that 31 of the 32 proposals involved urban or urban-adjacent areas such as small cities or inner-ring suburbs. Although they note that later grant competitions prioritized rural applicants, there may still be opportunities to consider how the reform might benefit rural and remote areas of the country.

All the Prime Numbers
Thanks, @what-hos-there, for making me math. Ugh!
1: Is it worse to fail at something or never attempt it in the first place? (not technically a prime number, but I wanted to answer this one)
While the obvious answer here is “well that depends on a lot of factors,” let’s just assume for the moment that the thing you are attempting is not...stupid. Let’s say there’s a chance of success and that said success will hurt no one.
Those things being given, I very strongly feel that, for me, making the attempt is everything. The end result is almost supplemental. I live in a state of mind where I’m very aware that I’ve got one life, one chance, and I don’t often have the energy to get up and do things, so when I have that opportunity, I jump on it like a tiger in the bush. Explosively, absolutely. I know I burn out fast and I only have limited time to enjoy the things I choose to do, so...yeah, those opportunities are precious to me. And if I fail, I fail, but good or bad I had an experience, and I try to always get something out of those experiences. I’m rarely bitter (there are pointed, rather awful exceptions, but I’ll not go into that). But, in general, I regret the things I didn’t do far more than the things I did. Even if the result was humiliating failure.
2: If you could choose just one thing to change about the world, what would it be?
I would enable every human being on earth to feel genuine empathy for their “enemies.”
3: To what extent do you shape your own destiny, and how much is down to fate?
I don’t really believe in “fate.” I believe the universe to be a beautiful, but completely random place, at least when it comes to forces outside my conscious control. One’s “destiny” is a mixture of those uncontrollable happenings and your responses to them. I further delineate between responses: there are reactions, which we don’t think about but simply act upon; decisions, in which we take a course of action given limited possibilities; and choices, which are proactive, things we do when we have power to generate our own possibilities irrespective of our surroundings. The last are preciously rare (most “choices” are in fact simply decisions; there is no real freedom involved, no reaching for an ideal future...you simply pick a path, and it takes you where it takes you. I hate it when people frame that as a choice. It’s not) and it is critical to recognize them if you hope to have any say in what your “destiny” is. Not everyone gets a choice. If you do, do not squander it. Learn to recognize what little power you are privileged to have, and make good with it. “Fate” is just letting life present you with a preset collection of forks in the road, and picking a direction. If you want to determine your destiny, you have to make your own paths when you can, and trust me, it’s better when they intersect with the self-made paths of others.
5: Should people care more about doing the right thing, or doing things right?
If I’m parsing this right, I think you’re asking if we should prioritize morality over practicality; what works, or what’s fair. In general, I don’t view these things as mutually exclusive, at least not when talking about systems. But when faced with a moral dilemma, I tend to default to taking the action that will ultimately do the least harm. Sometimes that’s the fair action, and sometimes that’s the practical one. But like many of these questions, the answer is basically “it depends.”
7: Where is the line between insanity and creativity?
Insanity is a word we use to dismiss the legitimacy of someone’s experiences and thoughts, without having to examine them critically. When someone does or says something that we find absurd, the deciding factor between labeling it “creative” and labeling it “insane” usually comes down to whether we like it or not. So, I’d say the line is “arbitrary personal preference.”
11: What is time?
Something I don’t have enough of. Ever.
More serious answer; time is how we perceive the progression of our existence through reality. It is measurable only through change; you cannot contain it, or hold onto it. No one moment can be repeated or recreated. So, largely, time as we tend to think of it is a subjective matter. Things get a little (but not much) more concrete when you start talking about time in mathematical terms, but it’s still a concept that confounds humanity for wont of a concrete definition. We see its effects on the universe, but we cannot capture it. The best definition we have is that time is the expansion of all existence into nothingness, and eventually, entropy.
Ultimecia loves that shit.
13: Do you make your own decisions, or let others make them for you?
I hate having other people make decisions for me. I have to be laid up in bed sick as all getout barely able to get up to go to the bathroom before I start to ask other people to make decisions on my behalf. I have words about the current trend of self-important machines setting things up for me, forcing me to retroactively fix all the crap they did wrong, rather than just letting me set things up myself, the way I liked them. I’m terribly spoiled in that regard. Blame my DOS upbringing.
17: What is the difference between living and being alive?
This question suggests its own answer by insinuating there is a difference between the two. Most people think of “living” as having some quality of life, whereby happiness can be felt and the future is something to look forward to. Whereas “being alive” typically refers to the simple act of survival, of thinking nothing about anything except taking your next breath and ensuring you wake up after you sleep. Being alive means your body and mind are functioning, but there is no space for anything more; living, on the other hand, implies relief from such basic concerns, and the possibility of personal fulfillment.
19: Who decides what morality is?
These questions are so poorly worded. Morality is determined by underlying social frameworks and depends heavily on which framework causes the least dissonance in any given person’s mind. There is no final arbiter of morality.
23: Is a family still relevant in the modern world?
Yes. ...Do I need to explain that? Family has a much broader meaning now than it used to, but it’s certainly not irrelevant because by and large, people still want it. It’s a feeling of kinship shared only between people who are emotionally intimate enough to recognize each other mutually as part of the same clan. Blood relations usually play a part but are less and less necessary as our collective need for tribalism gradually dissolves. This is a good thing, in my opinion.
My “family,” for instance, currently consists of myself, my husband, a second, long-distance relationship, and our live-in friend who we tell people is our tenant, for convenience’s sake. He does pay “rent,” but only in that he pays for what he uses up in resources. Otherwise, he’s just there and we all work together to keep up this odd little household of ours. We joke he’s our “adopted millennial,” but really we just get along really well with him. While there’s no romantic feelings there at all, it would be...sad and weird if suddenly our “tenant” were not there, anymore, and he is very happy to tag along wherever we go. Whatever we do, we’re all in it together, supporting and sacrificing for each other. That’s modern family.
29: What is infinity?
Mostly a mathematical concept. Technically, 99.999999~ is infinity, but trying to explain that there is no functional difference between an infinite decimal and infinity itself is very hard on most people’s brains.
31: What defines you?
“What” implies a thing that is tangible and measurable, so if I were honest, the answer to this question would be “nothing.” What defines me is a fluid, ever-changing state that encompasses various things and experiences and people as they phase in and out of my life. What defines me, ultimately, is a bit of a Venn diagram of objects, thoughts, individuals and experiences, and it’s never the same at any given point.
BUT that’s not the answer you want. You want something concrete, an allegory. Okay. I am defined by what I have left in me, by the stories I have not yet told. When I write, even when what I’m writing is happy, I’m bleeding onto that page, and when I’m done, a part of me is gone forever, stolen by the text. See, once you take a living part of yourself and set it in stone, place it in a static state, that part of you dies. It may gain new life of sorts in the minds of readers, but what it was to me is now gone forever. You see, that’s why I post so very little, here, even though I talk about writing a lot. Before I pour something onto a page, I have to be absolutely sure that I am ready to let go, to lose it. Far from immortalizing me, it is a sort of jubilant suicide--not born of despair, but of longing that’s just as powerful. I want someone to see these stories I live with. I want someone to know, and to understand. But to do that, I must inscribe The End. Writing, for me, is a sacrificial rite, and what defines “me” is all that you do not already know is still in here, waiting for its time.
37: Is trust more important than love?
I would say so. Some people don’t actually need or want love, at least not in the romantic sense (which is how I’m interpreting this question). On the other hand, a life without trust is a very stressful one, no matter how you slice it.
41: The structure of DNA appears to be intelligently designed, what are the implications?
No it doesn’t.
43: Is life all a dream?
If it is, it’s not ours. This reaches so far into speculative territory as to render itself beyond any “philosophy.”
47: How did the universe begin?
Oh good grief. I’m not going to write a report. There are many slightly different theories; do your own research and pick one.

COVID-19 Lockdown: Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh watering down labour laws is a body blow to the working class
The proposed ordinance in Uttar Pradesh titled, “Uttar Pradesh Temporary Exemption from Certain Labour Laws Ordinance” exempts ‘All factories and establishments engaged in manufacturing process shall be exempted from the operation of all Labour laws for a period of three years’, subject to certain minimal conditions including payment of minimum wages, the working day being extended to 12 hours and retaining the protection of labour laws relating to the employment of children and women, as also bonded labour.
Labour concderns. PTI
Another notification dated 8 May, 2020 specifically exempts all factories registered under the Factories Act, 1948 from provisions regulating weekly hours, daily hours, overtime, intervals of rest etc. of all adult workers. Thus Uttar Pradesh has in effect decided to suspend 35 of the 38 labour law for three years including laws related to industrial disputes, trade unions and contract workers.
Madhya Pradesh has gazetted amendments to relieve employers of the responsibility of virtually all provisions of the Factories Act from provisions of water and toilets to basic health and safety, allowing working hours to be extended to 12 hours instead of eight and weekly hours up to 72 hours, while also barring the raising of complaints and disputes under the Industrial Disputes Act save for on the question of closure for establishments with more than 300 employees all for a period of 1,200 days.
Gujarat is seeking to give any new investor in Gujarat a holiday that makes an investment that lasts at least 1,200 days of all labour legislation with the exception of the Minimum Wages Act and the Workmen’s Compensation Act. Himachal Pradesh has issued an executive order allowing shifts of 12 hours’ work a day or 72 hours of work a week with no provision of overtime. News reports also point to increase in working hours and tinkering with the operation of other labour laws in other states as well.
We can rest assured that this decision will be spun by those in power as being in the interest of workers. However, a close analysis reveals that this decision will be a body blow to the working class. There is a serious question of propriety and legality in using the ordinance route. It is settled law that ordinance-making power is given to the executive to promulgate a law when the urgency of the situation so demands provided the legislature is not in session.
An ordinance so promulgated must be laid before the Legislative Assembly of the state or when there is a Legislative Council in the state, before both the Houses when they reassemble. It shall cease to operate at the expiration of six weeks from the re-assembly of the Legislature.
It is in the nature of an exception to the normal rule that law-making and this was clarified by BR Ambedkar during the Constituent Assembly Debates (Vol. 8 pages 208, 214,215) that it is not a parallel power of legislation and would have a very limited scope conferred only to deal with urgent matters when the Legislature was not in session.
The legality is suspect also given that labour is a concurrent subject on which the Central government has legislated in the form of the Industrial Disputes Act, Factories Act, Minimum Wages Act etc. Hence how can a labour regime be brought into force in some states, which does not meet the legislative intent and mandate of the Central legislations? Surely, there are more legal and technical grounds that could be raised in regard to the ordinances, but we will not dwell on that here.
One justification being offered is that flexibility has to be given to business and industry in this economic crisis to ensure revival. In reality, these ordinances which seek to deprive the working class of all legal protections break with an over 70 year compact between the state, labour and industry on protecting certain rights of labour.
While the history of the neo-liberal era is about the progressive whittling down of labour law protections, these amendments in one fell swoop attempt to take Indian labour back to the unregulated laissez-faire days of 19th-century European capitalism. These ordinances are not only illegal and  unconstitutional but also starkly indicative of the larger designs of a state determined to take advantage of the pandemic to push the working class to the situation of rightlessness.
These ordinances will have to be contextualised within a larger assault on the working class which has been mounted ever since the onset of neo-liberalism. Ever since the New Economic Policy initiated in 1991 the rights of the working class have been under assault on three fronts.
The first strategy par excellence, which has defined labour law, ever since its inception has been the startling discordance between the law on the books and the law in action. Nothing illustrates this better than the fate of legislation which has a life and death relevance today, namely, the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Act 1979.
If this legislation had been implemented in letter and spirit, it would have meant that migrant workers would have been paid fair wages, would have been guaranteed fair conditions of services and facilities as well as a journey allowance. The fact that this legislation was a dead letter is responsible for the misery inflicted upon the migrant workers who have been reduced to a condition of precarity, not getting paid during the lockdown, enduring lack of food and having no money to survive with dignity.
There has been the gradual whittling away of labour protections through judicial interpretation. The locus classicus (among many others) in this hall of constitutional shame is the judgment in Secretary, State of Karnataka and Others vs. Umadevi and Others, which has effectively gutted the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act. The Supreme Court held that ‘[M]erely because a temporary employee or a casual wage worker is continued for a time beyond the term of his appointment, he would not be entitled to be absorbed in regular service or made permanent, merely on the strength of such continuance’ thereby rendering the Act redundant.
The last strategy has been the gradual repeal of existing labour law protections. This came to a head in the Code of Wages, 2019 which repeals existing labour legislations like Payment of Wages Act, 1936 as well as Bonus Act all of which were the outcome of a struggle by the working class and replaces them by the Code of Wages Act, 2019 in which the power of the worker is diluted and the power of the contractor is enhanced.
The Code of Wages, 2019  is only the first Act, with three other codes planned namely the industrial code, the code on social security and the code on occupational safety, health and working conditions. The Code of Wages has been passed but not implemented, while the other three codes are still in the drafting stage. A look at all four codes gives one a sense of the wish list of the Narendra Modi government for labour -- remove all protections for labour regarding collective bargaining, fair wages as well as safety standards.
Due to the judicial, executive and legislative acts of commission and omission, a large proportion of the working population in India remain outside the protection of even rudimentary labour laws. In that context why should one even protest this latest assault and overhaul the existing labour law regime?
With all the limitations of existing labour law, it should be noted that unorganised worker unions have taken forward their struggle in this hostile space and fought to extend labour law protections in the organised sector to those in the unorganised sector as well as fought to ensure implementation of specific labour law legislation. A combination of a struggle on the ground working hand in hand with strategic litigation has delivered concrete results for many unorganised sector unions around the country.
What unions and activists have always relied on to wage their struggle is a clear framework of labour law protections encoded in law. It is the protections embodied in the Contract Labour Act, Minimum Wages Act, Payment of Wages Act, Factories Act, etc. which have been sought to be extended to the unorganized sector in the form of legislation which embodies the basic principles of limits to the hours of work, holidays, safe conditions of work etc.
These ordinances threaten this edifice of labour rights which should apply to all workers be they in the organised or unorganised sector.
The birth of labour law was around the core idea of the limits to the working day. It was the struggle of the working class which resulted in the eight-hour working enshrined as a legal limit in factory legislation in countries around the world.  As Marx put it ‘these laws curb capital’s drive towards a limitless draining away of labour-power by forcibly limiting the working day on the authority of the state, but a state ruled by capitalist and landlord’.
When the ordinance contemptuously throws aside this limitation of the working day, it is brushing aside an entire history of struggle and leaving workers at the mercy of owners of capital.
To read the chapter on ‘the working day’ in Marx’s Capital, Vol I is to reacquaint oneself with the voluminous evidence as to why in the first place the length of the working day had to be limited. Marx cites an 1861 Report on the Baking Trade which observes:
The committee believes that any constant work beyond twelve hours a day encroaches on the domestic and private life of the working man, and so leads to disastrous moral results interfering with each man’s home, and the discharge of his duties as a son, a brother, a husband, a father. That work beyond 12 hours has a tendency to undermine the health of the working man, and so lead to premature old age and death, to the great injury of families of working men, thus deprived of the care and support of the head of the family when most required.
Marx further documents what can happen when the working hour is increased.
A tremendous railway accident has dispatched hundreds of passengers into the next world. The negligence of the railway workers is the cause of the misfortune. They declare with one voice before the jury that 10 or 12 years before their labour lasted only eight hours a day. During the last five or six years, they say, it has been screwed up to 14, 18 and 20 hours, and when excursion trains are put on, their labour often lasts for 40 or 50 hours without a break. They are ordinary men, not Cyclops. At a certain point, their labour-power ran out. Terror seized them. Their brains stopped thinking, their eyes stopped seeing.
The extension of the working day is finally self-defeating as:
By extending the working day, therefore, capitalist production, which is essentially the production of surplus-value, the absorption of surplus-labour, not only produces a deterioration of human labour-power by robbing it of its normal moral and physical conditions of development and activity but also produces the premature exhaustion and death of this labour-power itself.
However ‘capital ..takes no account of the health and the length of life of the worker unless society forces it to do so.’ The factory’s legislations are the result of this force applied by society.
The Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh ordinances seek to destroy the initial gains of the labour movement which is the basis for all other gains which the working class has made over decades. If these ordinances are not repealed, we risk a return to a regime where labour is again pushed back to fighting for elementary right of the eight-hour working day.
It's also apposite to note that one of  Ambedkar’s little recognised contributions is as a labour member of the Viceroy’s Council. As the member of the Viceroy’s Council he gave many speeches on the nuances and intricacies of Factories Bills, Payment of Wages as well as on the welfare and social security of workers.
Many of his reflections are particularly apposite in a time when the ordinances seek to do away with precisely those legislations which he sought to painstakingly craft to protect the rights of labour. Like Marx, Ambedkar was committed to the idea of a limited working day. He too recognised that it was only on the basis of reduction of the working day that the worker could become a citizen. As he put it:
The labour department’s memorandum on the reduction of working hours pointed out that it was both unjust and unwise to deny the workers a reasonable amount of spare time away from the factory, which was indispensable for the building up of citizenship and for the maintenance of his physical efficiency.
It emphasised that the present was an opportune moment for taking up this question because there was a need for giving relief to factory workers who had been put to a great strain during the war. Moreover, shorter hours would lead to greater employment. The memorandum made it clear that the reduction in hours should not be accompanied by any reduction in basic wages or dearness allowances unless there was a fall in prices. The rates of piece-workers should be adjusted on the principle that a piece-worker should earn not less than a time worker.
In the 7th Labour Conference held on 26 November 1945, in his presidential address BR Ambedkar lamented the reluctance to enact labour legislations especially on wages where he stated:
How can the workers be asked to agree to reduce standards of living in an economy in which the profits are to go to private individuals?
He went on the state as follows:
We must do our best and do it immediately to mitigate it and to prevent it from lowering labour standards. I believe three things are necessary to ease the situation. Firstly, to reduce hours of employment so as to provide employment for many. Secondly, to provide machinery for fixing wages. The absence of such machinery combined with employment is bound to cause labour standards to slump, which ought to be prevented. Thirdly, to provide the employers and workers with a resolve to collective bargaining and learn to work together in the solution of other common problems. Nothing in my judgment can bring this about more effectively than sound and responsible Trade Unions.
The Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh ordinances attack a fundamental proposition of what it is to be human. It reduces a labourer to a machine, renders his livelihood even more precarious and raises the question of what does the Indian Constitution mean for the worker? As Ambedkar rightly noted the ability to claim citizenship rights is based on the freedom of the worker from being a slave to his work.
To not be a slave beholden to his work, to enjoy constitution rights,  labour laws are an essential substratum. It is this which makes Marx call the factories legislations, the  ‘modest Magna Carta of the legally limited working day’ more relevant than the ‘pompous catalogue of the ‘inalienable rights of man’. It is this  Marxian ‘modest Magna Carta’ and Ambedkarite ‘indispensable [condition] for the building up of citizenship’ which the UP and MP ordinances seek to destroy.
In Rajasthan, apart from raising the working hours from 8 hours per day to 12 hours per day, the state has amended Industrial Disputes Act to increase the threshold for lay-offs and retrenchment to 300 from 100 earlier. Further, in order to recognise the trade union, the threshold membership of the trade union has been increased from 15 percent to 30 percent.
In Maharashtra, all shops and factories are asked to submit consolidated annual returns instead of multiple returns under various labour laws while Punjab has amended Factories Act to increase the work time to 12 hours every day and 72 hours every week, compared to 8 hours every day and 48 hours every week.
Arvind Narrain is based in Bengaluru, Maitreyi Krishnan is lawyer and trade union activist with AICCTU and Clifton D’ Rozario is lawyer and national cecretary, AICCTU.
