Lobbyists for cable companies and advertisers yesterday expressed their displeasure with a proposed “click-to-cancel” regulation that aims to make it easier for consumers to cancel services.
Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan has said that changes are needed because “some businesses too often trick consumers into paying for subscriptions they no longer want or didn't sign up for in the first place.” The FTC proposed the new set of rules in March 2023, and comments from industry groups were taken this week in a hearing presided over by an administrative law judge.
NCTA – The Internet & Television Association, the primary trade group for cable companies like Comcast and Charter, said the rule would make it harder to offer deals to customers who are trying to cancel.
“The proposed simple click-to-cancel mechanism may not be so simple when such practices are involved. A consumer may easily misunderstand the consequences of canceling, and it may be imperative that they learn about better options,” NCTA CEO Michael Powell said at the hearing. For example, a customer “may face difficulty and unintended consequences if they want to cancel only one service in the package,” as “canceling part of a discounted bundle may increase the price for remaining services.”
Powell said that cable company reps can usually talk customers out of canceling. “Out of millions of cancellations, complaints received by NCTA members amount to only a tiny fraction of 1 percent,” he said. “Three out of four of the cable and broadband customers who called to cancel end up retaining some or all service after speaking with an agent.”
Powell worries that retaining customers will become tougher because, he said, the FTC “proposal prevents almost any communication without first obtaining a consumer's unambiguous, affirmative consent. That could disrupt the continuity of important services, choke off helpful information, and forgo potential savings. It certainly raises First Amendment issues.”
Powell also said the cost of complying—including retraining employees and maintaining records for longer than current practice—could force cable companies to raise prices. He claimed that the FTC's estimate of compliance costs is too low.
FTC: Sellers Must Take “No” for an Answer
The FTC said one of its proposed rules “would require businesses to make it at least as easy to cancel a subscription as it was to start it. For example, if you can sign up online, you must be able to cancel on the same website, in the same number of steps.”
Sellers would also have to obtain customer consent before they “pitch additional offers or modifications when a consumer tries to cancel their enrollment,” the FTC said. Before making those pitches, sellers would have to “ask consumers whether they want to hear them. In other words, a seller must take ‘no’ for an answer, and upon hearing ‘no’ must immediately implement the cancellation process.”
The FTC also proposes that sellers be required to “provide an annual reminder to consumers enrolled in negative option programs involving anything other than physical goods, before they are automatically renewed.”
At yesterday's hearing, the FTC also heard from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), a lobby group for the online advertising industry. “The proposed rule would disrupt the current regime by adding specific requirements dictating what auto-renewal disclosures must say and how they must be presented,” said Lartease Tiffith, the IAB's executive VP for public policy.
Tiffith argued that the rule will burden businesses “and restrict innovation without any corresponding benefit. And as the technology develops, these prescriptive requirements will constrain companies from being able to adapt their offerings to the needs of their customers.”
Tiffith defended auto-renewals generally, saying the practice of automatically renewing services brings “significant benefits to both businesses and consumers in the form of cost savings, convenience, and heightened value.”
Cable Lobby Complains About Cost
Powell claims that complying with the rules would require “rebuilding” cable company systems and that the cost “could easily exceed $100 million for initial implementation by our industry alone.” These costs “would likely lead to higher prices for consumers,” he said.
An FTC Notice of Proposed Rulemaking offered a much different take on the costs, estimating that the “annual labor cost for disclosures for all entities is $4,695,800.” That's based on “an estimated hourly wage rate for sales personnel of $22.15” and an “estimate of 212,000 hours for compliance with the Rule's disclosure requirements.”
The FTC said that non-labor costs for complying with record-keeping and disclosure rules, “such as equipment and office supplies, would be costs borne by sellers in the normal course of business.”
Powell argued that the proposal shouldn't be applied to the cable industry. “The ominously labeled ‘negative option’ feature is merely a plan that continues until the customer cancels,” Powell said. "Most such plans present few concerns … In many industries like ours, automatic renewals are the only model that makes any sense. Consumers expect their internet service to flow reliably and without interruption."
The cable lobbyist contended that consumers are happy with cable company cancellation practices, and that adding the rules to “established processes that are well understood by subscribers will create more confusion, not less.”
“Tens of millions of consumers use our services. They know they are paying for continuing service … and they know how to cancel, rarely complaining about the process,” he said. “The FTC's highly prescriptive proposal requiring numerous disclosures, multiple consents, and specific cancellation mechanisms is a particularly poor fit for our industry.”
Referring to the requirement to obtain consent before offering new deals to customers who are trying to cancel service, Powell said that “placing speed bumps on conversations between consumers and providers will deny them a rightful chance at a better deal and providers a fair opportunity to retain a good customer.”

https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-lay-off-more-than-10-its-staff-electrek-reports-2024-04-15/
BERLIN, April 15 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab is laying off more than 10% of its global workforce, an internal memo seen by Reuters on Monday shows, as it grapples with falling sales and an intensifying price war for electric vehicles (EVs).
"About every five years, we need to reorganize and streamline the company for the next phase of growth," CEO Elon Musk commented in a post on X. Two senior leaders, battery development chief Drew Baglino and vice president for public policy Rohan Patel, also announced their departures, drawing posts of thanks from Musk although some investors were concerned.
Musk last announced a round of job cuts in 2022, after telling executives he had a "super bad feeling" about the economy. Still, Tesla headcount has risen from around 100,000 in late 2021 to over 140,000 in late 2023, according to filings with U.S. regulators.
Baglino was a Tesla veteran and one of four members, along with Musk, of the leadership team listed on the company's investor relations website.
Scott Acheychek, CEO of Rex Shares - which manages ETFs with high exposure to Tesla stock - described the headcount reductions as strategic, but Michael Ashley Schulman, chief investment officer at Running Point Capital Advisors, deemed the departures of the senior executives as "the larger negative signal today" that Tesla's growth was in trouble.
Less than a year ago, Tesla's chief financial officer, Zach Kirkhorn, left the company, fueling concerns about succession planning.
Tesla shares closed 5.6% lower at $161.48 on Monday. Shares of EV makers Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O), opens new tab, Lucid Group (LCID.O), opens new tab and VinFast Auto also dropped between 2.4% and 9.4%.
"As we prepare the company for our next phase of growth, it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity," Musk said in the memo sent to all staff.
"As part of this effort, we have done a thorough review of the organization and made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by more than 10% globally," it said.
Reuters saw an email sent to at least three U.S. employees notifying them their dismissal was effective immediately.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
MASS MARKET
The layoffs follow an exclusive Reuters report on April 5 that Tesla had cancelled a long-promised inexpensive car, expected to cost $25,000, that investors have been counting on to drive mass-market growth. Musk had said the car, known as the Model 2, would start production in late 2025.
Shortly after the story published, Musk posted "Reuters is lying" on his social media site X, without detailing any inaccuracies. He has not commented on the car since, leaving investors and analysts to speculate on its future.
Tech publication Electrek, which first reported, opens new tab the latest job cuts, said on Monday that the inexpensive car project had been defunded and that many people working on it had been laid off.
Reuters also reported on April 5 that Tesla would shift its focus to self-driving robotaxis built on the same small-car platform. Musk posted on X that evening: "Tesla Robotaxi unveil on 8/8," with no further details.
Tesla could be years away from releasing a fully autonomous vehicle with regulatory approval, according to experts in self-driving cars and regulation.
Tesla shares have fallen about 33% so far this year, underperforming legacy automakers such as Toyota Motor (7203.T), opens new tab and General Motors (GM.N), opens new tab, whose shares have rallied 45% and about 20% respectively.
Energy major BP (BP.L), opens new tab has also cut more than a tenth of the workforce in its EV charging business after a bet on rapid growth in commercial EV fleets did not pay off, Reuters reported on Monday, underscoring the broader impact of slowing EV demand.
WORKS COUNCIL
A newly elected works council of labour representatives at Tesla's German plant was not informed or consulted ahead of the announcement to staff, said Dirk Schulze, head of the IG Metall union in the region.
"It is the legal obligation of management not only to inform the works council but to consult with it on how jobs can be secured," Schulze said.
Analysts from Gartner and Hargreaves Lansdown said the cuts were a sign of cost pressures as the carmaker invests in new models and artificial intelligence.
Tesla reported this month that its global vehicle deliveries in the first quarter fell for the first time in nearly four years, as price cuts failed to stir demand.
The EV maker has been slow to refresh its aging models as high interest rates have sapped consumer appetite for big-ticket items, while rivals in China, the world's largest auto market, are rolling out cheaper models.
China's BYD (002594.SZ), opens new tab briefly overtook the U.S. company as the world's largest EV maker in the fourth quarter, and new entrant Xiaomi (1810.HK), opens new tab has garnered substantial positive press.
Tesla is gearing up to start sales in India, the world's third-largest auto market, this year, producing cars in Germany for export to India and scouting locations for showrooms and service hubs in major cities.
Tesla recorded a gross profit margin of 17.6% in the fourth quarter, the lowest in more than four years.

JUNK Ford Ecosport 1.0L 3-Cylinder Ecoboost Teardown. How Do You Avoid This Failure?
Check out our website at www.Importapart.com or email us at [email protected] for parts and part inquiries. I've been tearing down engines on camera for 2 and a half years! Search my channel to see what I've torn down. You have been asking and FINALLY! I found one of these little nuggets of combustion. A 1.0L, turbocharged, direct injected 3 cylinder Ecoboost from a Ford Ecosport. This is a pretty unique engine in design as there aren't a lot of 3 cylinder offerings in the US, and I think its the first domestic branded 3 cylinder since the Geo Metro of the 90's. This 1000cc powerhouse puts down 123hp and is available in the front wheel drive Ecosport and Ford Focus, although they are available in more cars for different markets. This particular core engine is thought to have around 70-80k miles on it which is very premature for an engine failure on a modern car. I tear this engine all the way down to try to figure out what happened, and why it failed. Why on earth am I doing these teardowns? I own and run a full service auto salvage business in the Saint Louis area called Importapart. Part of our model is buying blown, core and unwanted engines and dismantling them to resell the good, usable parts. We do not rebuild engines, we merely supply parts to those who do. I really hope you enjoyed this teardown. As always, I love all of the comments, feedback, and even the criticism. Catch you on the next one!
P.S. These engines are good only as long as you drive through the gates of the dealership and you have warranty. This internal combustion engine is one of the reasons why Ford is not doing well in the European car market...! Yes, while the engine is new, the car drives quite normally with it, but as soon as the miles accumulate, it breaks and problems are appearing much too early. In fact, these fossil fuel engines die much faster than electric car batteries...

Do you think the Fate showrunners/writers would've known which show Eve was gonna be in? The cast of HOTD said the whole audition process was very secret, even they didn't know what show they were auditioning for in the beginning. I wonder if Eve for example would've been allowed to reveal anything before it was officially announced? I think the casting news came out in April or May last year, so I guess the cast and crew of Fate would've known she was gonna be in HOTD before they started shooting s2 right? But would Eve have been allowed to tell the showrunners before it was made public or do you think it wasn't THAT secret? Also, do you know how long before they start shooting does the crew of a show like Fate start working? Watching "the house that dragons built" was crazy, all the people who work to make the show and most of their work starts months before they start actually shooting, it made me curious to know what that's like for a show like Fate.
Omg two asks in one day! So there are a couple of parts to this.
In terms of the secrecy, there is a certain level to which things are kept secret. Casting would be very hush hush mostly to avoid everyone and their mother trying to audition for the show. Also the casting level is a more vulnerable level and one of the most likely places information is to leak from. I’ve worked on shows where access to the audition sides requires a link to a website where you have to put in a password that has been randomly generated for you and even then, the link, the password and the email that was sent to you is set to auto delete after 24 hours. Auditioning with fake sides is common when you’re trying to keep the casting quiet. That being said, things are more spoken about on the showrunner/producer level. And that comes from the fact that you’re operating in a circle of your peers and it’s business. Everyone on that level understands when it’s appropriate to divulge the show you’re working on and when it’s not. And you have to converse on that level because of you didn’t, you’d never have a show made.
As for letting Fate know, Eve wouldn’t be the one to do that. Her agent would handle that and would tell the Fate showrunners as soon as they had a general idea of HOTD’s schedule, as well as Fate’s schedule. Usually when an actor is on two shows at the same time, the shows find a way to work together to sort out availability for both schedules. A show as big as HOTD would have primary access to Eve and that would be stated in her contract with them. If HOTD really wanted to, her contract may even say she is exclusive to them while they’re filming, in which case she wouldn’t have been able to go back to Fate. Obviously they were able to work something out because she was in one episode. In terms of secrecy, Eve’s agent wouldn’t have be allowed to say “The show is called House of the Dragon, it’s about the Targaryens and this is who Eve is playing!” but they would have been able to say “Eve’s booked a Game of Thrones prequel show.” And then that way Fate has an idea of who they’re going to have to work with. Also if Eve wanted to, she may have reached out to the showrunners after her agent sorted things out. That sort of thing would be a courtesy on her part, which is done regularly because it’s seen as kind and professional.
Lastly, to the question about how soon prep starts before shooting…it depends. If you were doing a tv movie, for instance, you would probably only have a month of prep before shooting. That’s because they’re inexpensive, easy to make, and don’t shoot for very long. But on average, prep for a show is about 3-4 months. For a show like HOTD, it’s easily double that. They were shooting in multiple countries at once, had full sized sets and were block shooting, which is when you have all your scripts written before going to picture and shoot all of them but out of order. Actors don’t generally like this, but on a show the size of HOTD it would be necessary. As for Fate, I can’t see them having a ridiculously long prep, probably between 3-5 months and only because they have to coordinate shooting in another country. But the other factors to that specific show which would require prep wouldn’t need more than that. Also be aware that the prep time I’m talking about is the time the office opens to when principal photography starts. Often producers, showrunners, and writers have their own run up to prep which can start as early as a month after when the previous season finished shooting. But that depends on if they already know they’re renewed or not.
Wow that was a bit of a ramble! I hope I answered your question and if anyone has anymore, feel free to ask, I love talking about my industry!

My productivity hack: timelapses
Over the last few days I have been a very busy university student working on two assignments. I manage this without getting distracted by shooting a timelapse of myself at work with my phone. This has several purposes when helping me focus:
Setting the phone up and hitting record creates a sense of urgency to start the task that breaks through my tendency to procrastinate.
I want the timelapse to be fun to watch, so I stay completely on-task or keep distractions to a minimum.
It completely takes over my phone, forcing me to avoid using it. I often put DND on too, as I don’t want vibrations to shake the phone loose from where it’s propped up and I don’t want my smartwatch to distract me.
It’s a fun treat after finishing a huge amount of work to have a timelapse showing off my progress.
I want the timelapse to be as long as possible, so I work for as long as possible.
If you want to give this technique a try yourself, I have a few hints and tips:
Leave speed on auto on the “hyperlapse” mode of Samsung phones
As far as I can tell, this pretty much always records a timelapse that compresses each second down to each frame, for a speedup of 30x. This is a good speed for most activities lasting several hours, and will result in a timelapse 2 minutes long for every hour spent filming. This can be sped up in the video player to 60fps for a nice neat 1 second = 1 minute ratio.
Use the phone that’s shooting the timelapse for background music
Find a playlist you really like and set it playing before filming. After pressing record, the music will pause but it can be resumed by the notification shade media controls or an external device with media controls such as a smartwatch. This reduces the risk of distraction further by taking background music control away from the PC you’re working on.
Have a clock in shot
As mentioned in my blog post on the virtual computer series, I use my 3DS running a clock program for this, but any clock works. Before I had the clock program, I’d open a full-screen clock website on the second screen of my PC. This gives context to the timelapse and is also just something to watch during the breaks in the action. Please do remember to take breaks!!
Record from an side-on angle
Ideally as much surface area of your monitors should be visible as possible and unobscured by your body or objects in the shot. This requires an angle not head-on to the monitors but off to the side, between yourself and your monitors. This may be tricky to find, and it’s a good idea to try shooting with the front-facing camera, allowing you to preview the shot easily. This prevents any work, or more importantly distractions, from being hidden on the timelapse.
Use natural light
Monitors tend to get overexposed in indoor lighting, so it’s important to open the curtains and blinds to get as much light into the shot as possible. This may also have the added bonus of showing the progression of day to night. (or in more than one case for me, night to day!).
Turn down screen brightness as much as possible
When not plugged in, this is obvious. But even when plugged in, I highly recommend turning down the brightness as even on low brightness, an afterimage of the record button can be seen on my phone. Sometimes I have shot timelapses with the screen brightness inverted using accessibility settings to try to cancel out the screen burn from previous timelapses.
Don’t set a focus/exposure point
On Samsung phones at least, this results in very intense and distracting flicker as the camera compensates for the brightness of one part of the shot continuously.
Obviously shooting a timelapse is not a cure-all for lacking motivation in a task, but it has helped me significantly in managing my time and breaking through procrastination, which is why I’m sharing it. Try it today!

This summer, a Vancouver car mechanic named Max got a perplexing ping on his phone: Betty White was in Ukraine and needed his help. This was surprising because she had died on a Canadian highway back in January.
When Max last saw Betty White, his nickname for his Tesla Model Y Performance, they were both in rough shape after getting sideswiped on the highway. Max’s rotator cuff was torn in several places. The small SUV had bounced off multiple concrete barriers at high speed and was bashed in on all four corners, its wheels ripped to pieces. Coolant appeared to be leaking into the battery chamber. From his own work on EVs in the garage, Max knew that Betty was done for. “No auto shop would put a repair person at risk with that kind of damage,” says Max, whose last name isn’t being used out of doxing concerns. A damaged EV battery can become dangerous due to the risk of shocks, fire, and toxic fumes. His insurer agreed, and Betty was written off and sent to a salvage yard.
Months after he had last seen the car, Max’s Tesla app was now telling him that Betty needed a software update. It showed the car with an extra 200 kilometers on the odometer, fully charged, and parked in Uman, a town in Ukraine’s Cherkasy Oblast, midway between Kyiv and the front line with Russia’s invasion force. Minutes after that first ping, the app showed the car in service mode, suggesting Betty was undergoing repairs. “I thought it must be a mistake,” Max says.
There was no mistake. WIRED tracked Betty down to a Ukrainian auto auction website, looking good as new, maybe even better, with newly tinted windows and rearview mirrors wrapped in black. Betty 2.0 was being sold by “Mikhailo,” who wrote that the car had suffered “a small blow” in Canada and been repaired with original Tesla parts. The price, $55,000, was roughly the same as a new Model Y Performance costs in the US.
Betty White’s intercontinental resurrection was impressive but not unusual. For a long time, cars written off in North America have found their way to Eastern European repair shops willing to take on damage that US and Canadian mechanics won’t touch. In 2021, the most recent data available, Ukraine was a top-three destination for used US passenger vehicles sent overseas, close behind Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates. And Ukraine’s wreck importers and repairers are particularly known for their ingenuity. Some have made fixing EVs written off across the Atlantic into a specialty, helping to drive a surge in the number of electric vehicles on the country’s roads, even as the war with Russia rages.
Though few automakers sell new EVs in Ukraine, the share of newly registered vehicles that are fully electric, 9 percent, is about the same as in the US and nearly double that of neighboring Poland and the Czech Republic. Most of Ukraine’s refurbished EVs come from North America, and many arrive with major damage.
There’s a ready supply of crashed North American EVs in part because electrics are becoming more common, and also because in recent years, relatively new EVs with low mileage have been written off at a higher rate than their gas-powered equivalents, according to data from insurers. US and Canadian repair shops and insurers see them as more dangerous and difficult to fix. Scrapyards find it hard to make money from their parts and instead ship them abroad.
Ivan Malakhovsky is not afraid to work on cases like Betty White. His five-year-old repair business in Dnipro, in eastern Ukraine, fixes about 100 Teslas a month, roughly a fifth of them from overseas, and employs a staff that varies between six to 10 people. He’s currently away from home, serving with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but he manages his workers, and sometimes makes software-mediated repairs, remotely. “We have problems in our lives and can fix them, whether a battery or a full-scale invasion,” says Malakhovsky. “Electric cars, electric car batteries—it’s no problem.”
An electric vehicle battery is made up of thousands of individual cells, which store and release energy. Sometimes, Malakhovsky says, he and his coworkers will break up large EV batteries damaged beyond repair and repurpose the cells to power electric scooters or even drones for the war effort. He says the vast majority of Teslas on Ukrainian roads were once involved in wrecks in North America.
The war has even boosted Ukraine’s EV resurrection business at times, by driving up gas prices and making electrics more attractive to drivers. Ukraine has a public charging network of some 11,000 chargers, according to Volodymyr Ivanov, the head of communications at Nissan Motor Ukraine—that’s more than the state of New York, and double the number in neighboring Poland. Since 2018, Ukraine’s government has removed most taxes and customs duties on used EV imports. In the US, electric vehicles tend to be expensive, and the average EV driver is still a high-income male homeowner. North American wrecks, Ukraine’s EV incentives, and its relatively low electricity prices have created a different picture. “There is a joke here that all poor people are driving electric cars, and all the rich people are driving petrol cars,” says Malakhovsky. “Tesla is a common-people, popular car because it’s very cheap in maintenance.”
That’s a relatively recent development, says Hans Eric Melin, head of Circular Energy Storage, a UK-based consultancy that tracks the international flows of used EVs and batteries. He began watching the Ukraine market in particular a few years ago, after he noticed more ads for Nissan Leafs on auction sites listed in Ukrainian than in English. At the time, the Leaf, a pioneer among EVs, was essentially the only one that had been around long enough to develop a healthy used market. Over time, Ukraine’s electric fleet grew to encompass the full range of EVs sold around the world, including Teslas, as more cars hit the roads and aged or got into crashes.
Melin had suspected Ukraine’s EV boom would end with the war. “I was completely wrong,” he says. By this summer, Ukraine’s EV fleet had doubled since July 2021, to 64,312, according to data compiled by the Automotive Market Research Institute, a Ukrainian research and advocacy group.
Tumblr media
Roman Tyschenko, a 25-year-old IT worker who lives in Kyiv, decided last September that he was sick of his Jeep’s $400-a-month gas bill. Friends had purchased used, damaged electric cars on an online auction website called Copart, a US-based public auto reseller with 200 locations around the world. He logged on and spent $24,000 on a gray 2021 Tesla Model Y that had taken a solid blow to its passenger side in Dallas, Texas. Its bumper was almost fully detached; its hood was tented; some of its airbags had deployed.
That Texan Model Y was likely declared totaled by an insurer. From there, it probably moved to a salvage auction in the US, where licensed exporters, salvage shops, and repairers tried to figure out how much value they could squeeze out of the wreck. The winner, or perhaps the insurer itself, listed the car on Copart, which made it available to anyone around the world who wanted a smashed-up Tesla and was willing to pay for shipping.
If Tyschenko hadn’t brought the Texan Tesla to Ukraine himself, it had a good chance of being shipped there anyway by someone who professionally flips cars to countries like Ukraine. These exporters look for wrecks potentially worth more than their scrap value, but little enough that an expensive US repair and resale wouldn’t make sense. Some ship vehicles directly to Ukrainian repairers and pay for the fix, while others import damaged cars and relist them for sale to Ukrainian buyers who can figure it out for themselves.
It takes a damaged North American car between one and five months to reach a nearby port. Before the war, wrecked cars headed to Ukraine’s Port of Odessa on the Black Sea. Since Russia invaded in 2022, they come through Klaipėda in Lithuania on the Baltic Sea, or Koper in Slovenia on the Adriatic, and are brought to Ukraine by truck. A shop like Malakhovsky’s can fix a Tesla in somewhere between one week and one year, depending on the damage.
Tyschenko arranged for his Model Y to be shipped to a local repair shop in Kyiv, where it arrived in February 2023, five months after he hit the Buy button online. The technician sent him videos of the EV’s ongoing revamp every few weeks, and Tyschenko stopped by to visit a handful of times. By May, he had paid the technician some $25,000 for his work and was driving the Model Y around Kyiv.
Two months later, the battery died and Tyschenko spent another $4,000 to replace it—a demonstration of the risks of electric vehicle rescues. Still, he’s happy with how things worked out, and now pays just $10 to $100 a month to refuel his car, depending on whether he charges at home or at public stations.
Finding parts to repair Teslas and other EVs can be a challenge. On Facebook and Telegram, groups like “Renault Zoe Club Ukraine” host thousands of EV owners who barter with each other for spare parts. Oleksandr Perepelitsa, a 25-year-old electric vehicle repairer in Kyiv, says that when he first began his work three years ago, he and his business partners would buy two wrecked Teslas from overseas to create a single working vehicle to sell to local Ukranians. “Even that was profitable for us,” he says. Now, business connections can send Tesla parts from the US or Europe, or repairers buy cheaper Chinese reproductions.
Tumblr media
The success of Ukraine’s EV resurrection industry is the flip side of the failure of insurers and manufacturers in North America to figure out what to do when a shiny new EV becomes roadkill.
US insurers are more willing to write off vehicles of all kinds that in the past may have been fixed. New vehicle repairs have gotten more expensive, in part due to vehicles getting more complex and computerized, as well as a shortage of vehicle technicians. In the past decade, the damaged cars up for auction “are better and less damaged,” Copart CEO Jeff Liaw told investors on an earnings call this year.
Industry-wide data is hard to come by, but numerous sources suggest that EVs are more likely to be written off than gas-powered cars, and can be declared unfixable after even minor crashes. A Reuters analysis this year found that a “large portion” of damaged EVs sold for scrap were low-mileage, nearly-new vehicles. While one in 10 new cars sold in the US and Canada this year are forecasted to be electric, the infrastructure and expertise needed to assess and fix damaged EVs can be patchy. “In an ideal world, electric vehicles are as easy to repair as internal combustion engine vehicles,” says Mark Fry, research manager at Thatcham Research, which crunches auto market data for insurers and other clients. It recently found British EVs get written off at disproportionately high rates.
The main reason EV repairs are so tricky comes down to a lack of agreement on how to handle EV batteries after a crash. Worldwide, there is no industry standard for measuring battery health. Vehicle manufacturers sometimes refuse to sanction battery repairs because of liability concerns. “If you repair the battery, what's it going to be like after another two, three years and another 50,000 miles?” Fry says. It’s easier to let nearly new vehicles be declared dead than to find out.
The North American scrap industry is also somewhat leery of EVs, says Megan Slattery, a researcher at UC Davis who studies what happens to damaged EV batteries. Scrap businesses generally make money by taking cars apart to extract the most valuable widgets to resell. But dismantling a battery takes dedicated workers, equipment, and—most important of all—space, due to the fire risks of storing lithium-ion cells. Many mom-and-pop dismantlers don’t have any of that.
Plus, EVs tend to have simpler drivetrains, with more plastic and large, prefabricated body components that can’t be easily pulled apart. In some electric vehicles, the battery is built directly into the car’s structure, making it especially difficult to dismantle or repair. All of that means that exporters looking to sell to eager buyers abroad have less competition when bidding on totaled cars.
In the US, there’s increasing pressure to keep broken EVs from heading overseas. Regulators are concerned about safety, hoping to better track broken batteries through shipping channels as fears rise of fires sparked by used EVs, including on cargo ships. Another is to avoid dumping e-waste on countries without the means to recycle or repurpose, and instead keep the valuable minerals inside batteries local. Battery recycling startups have received vast amounts of private and public investment—both in Western Europe and the US, with funds from the Inflation Reduction Act—with a promise to help shore up raw material supply chains. But so far, they have received only a trickle of used batteries.
Policies that wind up choking off the export of EV wrecks would in some ways be a shame, Slattery says. More stringent European Union export rules for used cars and EV batteries in particular are one reason why the supply of Teslas to Eastern Europe is so dependent on North American wrecks. Without them, the electric revolution would be much less advanced in places like Ukraine, where US and Canadian write-offs have helped support the emergence of charger networks, trained repair specialists, and a wide familiarity and acceptance that electric propulsion is not just green but also practical.
In North America, there's a widespread belief that “people don't want electric vehicles and that it's just laws and regulations that push us to buy them,” says Melin, the used EV analyst. “There are other markets that want to have electrics.” It’s a testament to a system that is working, Melin adds, that used EVs end up in places like Ukraine, where new models are difficult to come by.
For Max in Vancouver, Betty White’s reappearance overseas did cause some headaches. The car was still logged into his Google, Netflix, and Spotify accounts, potentially allowing the new owners to access his personal data. When he asked Tesla support, he was advised to change his passwords, Max says. (Tesla did not respond to WIRED’s questions.)
But looking back on the crash, and now driving a new Model Y—named Black Betty—Max says his old car’s resurrection is the best possible outcome. “I’m happy to see that Betty White has lived to see another day,” he says.

OK! I got the greenlight from my brother, so his Major Xmas Gift this year is me getting a goddamn Redbubble store set up for him, which I think I can do so long as a) he gets me the art files and b) our mom gets me his bank info for auto-deposits etc.
The part I’m tripping up about in mentally planning is in how I’m going to promote his work - he’s honestly fucking TERRIBLE at it; he had a tumblr (which he stopped using), he has an instagram (that he generally forgets exists), he has an actual website (that he doesn’t update), and - and here’s the main thing - my default main internet identity is this one, which is my fandom and also kink scene pseud, which I do NOT want linked to his artist (and therefore default main) internet identity.
(this is for multiple reasons including but not limited to: 1) not wanting to fuck up his rep, 2) not wanting him to see/read my shit, 3) not wanting our MOM to find out and start monitoring THIS username too, etc.)
so what I think I might do is make a side-blog promoting his art and do a few judicious blazes of the most likely to sell stuff, but at that point I’m getting into a much longer-term investment than I originally intended, and I don’t know if that’s actually appropriate or healthy for me to do long-term - not that I don’t love my brother or his art, and not that I think it’s inherently inappropriate or unhealthy to manage a loved one’s business, particularly a loved one who’s unable to do so on their own, but because I am still generally struggling to handle my own shit on a consistent basis?
anyways. chickens, eggs, etc. trying to count them now will just be overwhelming. we’ll cross that bridge when we get there, etc.

The best web hosting for beginners?
Tumblr media
The best web hosting for beginners!
Introduction
Hosting is the process of providing space for websites. It can be done on either an internal server or an external one. In this article, we will discuss how to choose web hosts for beginners and why Bluehost is a great choice for them.
What is a web host?
A web host is an organization that provides space and access to the Internet for websites. They host your website, provide technical support, manage servers and ensure that your site runs smoothly. Web hosts can be built around a few different models:
Shared Hosting: This model is ideal if you don't have a lot of traffic on your site or if it's just going to be used by one person or company at any given time. You'll pay less than dedicated hosting but still get all of the services associated with a larger plan (like free email addresses). However, if you need more features like faster speeds or bandwidth limits—or even hosting multiple domains with one account—you might need dedicated server hosting instead.* Dedicated Server Hosting: In this case there are usually two options available: either virtual private servers (VPS) which give users complete control over their own hardware without having anything installed on them; then there are physical servers where everything is physically located inside one large facility run by the same company who owns them all together--and both types provide ultra-fast Internet connections thanks to high-end routers being used throughout each room where these systems reside."
Types of Hosting
Dedicated server
Dedicated servers are virtual machines that run on a single physical server. They're ideal for large businesses and organizations that need to run mission-critical applications, such as accounting software or search engines. You can get a dedicated server from any hosting provider, but there are some benefits to choosing one over another:
You won't have to share resources with other customers as you do with VPSs or Shared Hosting (more on these later).
If your business grows without increasing its infrastructure needs—and hopefully not shrinking them—you could save money by running only what you need at once rather than having two different plans in place at all times."
Bluehost
Bluehost is a US-based hosting company that provides web hosting services. It's one of the most popular choices for beginners and has been around since 2003. Bluehost is also an Endurance International Group member, which means it's part of a large network of companies all working together to provide more affordable prices on their shared resources.
Bluehost offers customers over 2 million websites hosted on its servers in over 60 countries around the world, making it one of the largest providers in this space!
Why Choose Bluehost?
Bluehost is one of the most trusted web hosting companies in the world. This is because they have a great reputation for being reliable, secure, and affordable. It also offers excellent customer service to its customers.
Bluehost’s value proposition is simple: if you want to get started with your website quickly without spending too much money then Bluehost will be perfect for you! Their packages start at $3/month which makes it very affordable compared with other shared hosting providers such as WordPress Hosting from InMotion Hosting (which costs $8/month). On top of this, they offer some additional features such as SSL certificate support; PHP7 compatibility; auto-scaling plans that scale up or down depending on demand; cPanel dashboard control panel access so you can manage all aspects of your site easily through an intuitive interface that comes free with every plan purchase - including backups & restores; 24x7x365 customer support via phone call or live chat session whenever needed!
Bluehost Plans and Pricing
Bluehost offers a wide range of hosting plans, from basic to advanced. Their most basic plan is web hosting with shared storage and email accounts, but you can also choose the more expensive VPS (virtual private server) and dedicated servers if you need more power.
Bluehost's 30-day money-back guarantee means that if your website doesn't suit your needs within 30 days (or sooner), they'll refund your entire investment. This is great for newbies who aren't sure what they're doing and want some time before making their decision about whether or not this is right for them!
The free domain name option is available at all levels of Bluehost's services; however, this does not apply if additional sites are being hosted on the same account as a personal site (i.e., it must be separate).
If you are new to hosting, choose Bluehost as it will be a great choice.
If you are new to hosting, choose Bluehost as it will be a great choice. The reason why I say this is that Bluehost is easy to use and well supported. It's also inexpensive and well suited to small businesses, personal websites, and blogs.
Conclusion
Bluehost is a good choice for beginners because it is easy to use and has many features that can help you create your own website. Bluehost offers reliable servers at low prices so you don't have to worry about downtime or slow loading times when you need them most!

5 Features Modern Websites Must Have
Tumblr media
The components that make up an effective website vary throughout time as user behaviour change and new technologies are created. It's critical to be aware of these developments in order to stay ahead of development and your rivals. We look at the elements that websites must have in 2022 in order to succeed.
1. Content on a website that was made with user purpose
Even if your company offers excellent goods and services, that don’t guarantee that, your website will be popular. Today, every element of a website must be customized for your target market. This necessitates having a clear understanding of who your target market is, how your company relates to them, and how they prefer to shop.
Getting it correctly entails creating material that will appeal to and interest your audience. These days, this entails being conscious of users’ search intentions To ensure that all demands are addressed and to establish a pathway for the customer journey, you must generate content for each of the numerous search intentions that consumers have at different phases of the sales process many business listings.
2. Technically suitable for the task
A website needs to be at the top of its game technically. To avoid user abandonment and to guarantee that the search engines' site performance benchmarks are met, it should load and reply promptly. Additionally, error-free websites will not have problems with reliability, search ability, navigation, or 404 errors. Owners should make sure their websites are well-maintained, correctly developed, and have quick, dependable hosting in order to support good speed and dependability.
Websites should put a lot of effort into technical SEO, particularly mobile friendliness, to succeed in search engines.
3. Security and confidence
Users won't shop at a website if it isn't safe and reliable, and search engines won't rank it. Customers want firms to go above and beyond to safeguard them from risks in a time when frauds, hacking, and malware infections are rampant.
The list of requirements for ensuring this is in constant development and covers not just the website but also the security of the customer data that businesses keep as well as the transmission of user information online. In addition to SSL certificates for encrypting user data, auto-updating software for removing vulnerabilities, spam filters to protect against dangerous emails, and secure logins to avoid hacking, firewall-secured web hosting is essential for keeping your server safe.
Furthermore, while putting these safeguards in place keeps your website and consumers safe, generating revenue necessitates going above and above and informing your clients that your site is safe and reliable. The most effective approach to demonstrate this is probably through the use of the green padlock icon that appears on browsers when an SSL certificate is installed and informs users that your site is safe business listings.
4. A positive user experience
Those that visit websites do so with the goal to take action. Whether their goal is to purchase a product, watch an online movie, or pay a bill, a successful website gives consumers everything they need to do it. Additionally, modern websites must take every precaution to make accomplishing that goal quick, simple, and enjoyable. Think of appealing design, product suggestion engines, Chabot shopping assistants, augmented reality technologies, pricing calculators, and other things to stay ahead of the competition.
5. A website that incorporates other systems
A vital part of the Omni channel environment that customers want to be able to interact with, a modern website is no more just a separate company portal. To guarantee that the customer journey is mapped from beginning to end and that the experience is seamless and the message is constant, it must be integrated with your other online systems, such as inventories, accounts, customer service, and marketing free business listings.
The necessity to synchronize systems and data, however, frequently necessitates some kind of infrastructure upgrading. The best and most economical course of action for the majority of businesses going through this digital transition is to adopt cloud hosting, a solution that offers all the performance, dependability, scalability, and security required, without the need for considerable capital expenditure.
Internet consumers' expectations rise and their shopping habits change as they get used to the advantages that digital technology has to offer. Websites need to be updated as well to suit their demands and expectations. The issues brought up here should help you understand how websites are evolving and what you can do to stay current.
