"The spectre of the trans death, particularly through suicide, hangs over all of the attacks on trans life. No one wants to admit that this is the desired end goal — that trans people simply cease to exist, whether that be through detransition or death seems to matter little. As Janice Raymond famously put it, the goal is for trans people to be “morally mandated out of existence.” Indeed, “shroud waving” threatens to stir up some empathy for the plight of this embattled minority, and we can’t be having that. Anti-trans actors have gone so far as to accuse trans people of acting like abusive husbands who threaten to kill themselves if their wives leave. It’s a useful strategy, this attack on the idea of trans death, because most cis people will never know a living trans person, let alone a dead one."

My jiddo fled genocide by Israel in 1948, and I get to be free as a transgender person with access to things like gender affirming care and community in 2023. My jiddo always tells me he is proud of me for just being me, and I truly believe him when he says that. He has endured so much, and to see his grandchild live in such a loving and fulfilling way, is a dream come true for him. A few months ago, when I asked my jiddo if he considered me a Palestinian, he said, “nothing would honor me more.” That is why I’m sharing this story. I carry my Palestinian elders and ancestors in my heart and body everywhere I go. It is not a separate part of me; it is me. It is part of where I come from. I come from the land and people of Palestine. I am a transgender Palestinian. A free Palestine means a freer world. Wall-shattering resistance from Palestinians is a direct result of 70+ years of colonization, land theft, occupation, and apartheid. It is the result of traumatized, imprisoned, and oppressed people fighting back. Do not be silent. Have conversations with people in your life. Call and email your legislators and demand a ceasefire. It matters when you stand in solidarity with people as they fight against militarized and global forces that want them extinct, especially when those forces are backed by biased mainstream media.

“Even though it’s fun and seemingly superfluous, it’s profound in that [Chappell Roan] remembers where she comes from, honors that, and also claims her space as a queer person who needs to go discover herself. The entire theme of this album comes back to this idea, which is made apparent even in the title. She gives all of us, and herself, permission to love where we came from, leave to find ourselves, miss our hometowns, and love our new messy lives. While most of these tracks are certainly jams you might hear at a queer dance party, it really hits home for us fly-over state queers. After laughing, shouting, dancing, and crying along with Roan, all I can say is: Thank you for giving us messy Midwestern bisexuals something so unequivocally relatable.”
