I’m pretty new to gymnastics but I read so many bad comments about nina (derwael). why do so many people not like her?

Hi, welcome! I'm probably not the best person to ask this because I only mildly dislike her haha, but I think it was originally about her form (lots of sickled and flexed feet, soft knees, leg separation) and the fact that she medalled despite that and low difficulty (and code whoring) in all other events than beam. Then when a lot of ugly stuff came out about abuse at the elite training center under current Belgian coaches Marjorie Heuls and Yves Kieffer, she defended them and the federation while discrediting the alleged victims. She even did this on television and in mainstream Belgian media. Since she's quite well known here (and is the only gymnast to be kind of famous in the country) what she says has a lot of influence.

If you care, where I stand on this is that I'm really not a fan of her gymnastics except her bars which are quite impressive (apart from form issues and a bit of a boring composition). I do think she gets way too much credit for putting Belgian gymnastics on the map when a lot of the heavy lifting was done by other gymnasts (Gaëlle and Axelle for example), and that she is now in the wrong with how she uses her "fame" by speaking out in favor of alleged abusers. However, gymnastics is her career and these are her coaches who she works with every day, so I'm hoping that once she retires and gets some distance from the whole thing, she can see the situation more clearly and apologize for her role in this. But maybe that's wishful thinking.

Anywayy sorry for the super long answer and tldr: she has bad form, low difficulty and code whores + she has defended alleged abusers (her coaches)

Since moving to the U.S, I found myself loving to wander around flea markets. In fact, this is how I began to buy vintage cabinet photos and old illustration books. I’m very sensitive to the expression, the shape of the face, the body position and if the photo is damaged by time. If the photo establishes a connection with me, I take it.I choose the pieces carefully paying attention to the scale, the shape and the color before putting everything together. The scalpel cut pieces cover the image and thus reveal a new meaning at the manner of a palimpsest. Covering, hiding, assembling the pieces create new combinations. To me, the collage breaks our vision of a known body.

An International Collage Exchange with Axelle Kieffer at Sulphur Studios in Savannah, Georgia, USA, through 21 October 2023. The exhibition features over thirty artists from around the world. Artist and exhibition curator Axelle Kieffer collaborated on over 200 collages since 2019, mostly through the postal service. These art exchanges challenge the collaborating artists to interpret, expand upon, or completely change the initial ideas of what the final work will look like. During the process, a long-distance dialogue between two (or more) artists is created, where they encounter playful and surprising reactions to their contributions, pushing them out of their comfort zone. These works include imagery harvested from all sorts of ephemera: postcards, magazines, recycled images, photographs, and any material the collage artist may have on hand. MORE
