#4 - Gorges State Park - 4/12/2023
Transylvania County / 976 Grassy Ridge Road, Sapphire, NC 28774 / GPS: 35.0960, -82.95105 ..... PARK MAP
Fast Facts: Located near the tripoint of NC, SC and Georgia, this is the western most state park in our arsenal. There are quite the number of waterfalls to see (26 to be exact) and over 56 miles of hiking trails. Adjacent to Pisgah National Forest, it is also one of the newer state parks in NC, established in 1999. The underlying land has a unique history starting with a significant recovery from a manmade disaster in 1916 followed by exchanges from one owner to the next over fifty plus years until the state finally purchased it from Duke Energy Corporation.
Trail(s): Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls Trails - 4.30 miles/1:50:11 - AllTrails + No Strava (left watch at home like a big dummy)
Hike Buddies: Jackson Helms (and Vanessa for a small part)
Hike Conditions: sunny, cool - mid 50s at the start.
Comments: Up here in Cullowhee on spring break for a college tour tomorrow, we ventured south a day early down through Cashiers to Sapphire NC to take on this moderately strenuous hike. It was a nice, crisp cool morning to start - we hit the trail shortly after 9:30am. Being mid-week there were not a ton of early-goers. This really was a tale of two hikes - the initial hike was a downhill descent on a well-maintained path that eventually got more technical when we actually left the state park to blaze the more rugged, less-maintained version. After going up and down a number of manmade stairs, we finally arrived to Rainbow Falls (magnificent) and hung out a few minutes before keeping right and making our way down to Turtleback Falls (also magnificent, albeit a little less). We didn't stop there - we took the trail to the end where we we came upon a fence and a private property sign with yet one finally waterfall in our sights. Enter the second hike - coming back out. And what goes down, must go back up. The ascent back up and out of the trail was a mild burn and a good cardio workout. Coming out we passed a number of families making their way down. After rewarding ourselves with some excellent BBQ at Haywood Smokehouse in Dillsboro, a long winters, uh, spring nap was in order.

Fill ‘Er Up
When the first gas stations started appearing around 1905, they were tiny. Sometimes they were stand-alone structures with a couple of gravity-fed pumps. In other cases there were simply a couple of pumps curbside in front of a small store.
And no one, even in their wildest dreams, could ever begin to imagine what would happen more than a century later with the arrival of gas stations larger than modern supermarkets.
Tumblr media
We can thank Buc-ee’s in large part for this bigger-is-better push. Founded in 1982 in Lake Jackson Texas, it is only in the last decade that it has exploded across the south, both in markets served and size of their properties. And now Amarillo will be joining a growing number of these massive travel centers.
At present, Buc-ee’s operates 41 stores in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, but there are new locations in progress in six other states, including Colorado, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri. The largest Buc-ee’s, at 72,000 square feet, will be built in eastern Tennessee near the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It will be the world’s largest convenience store, surpassing only the Buc-ee’s in New Braunfels Texas.
In contrast, the Amarillo location will be a more standard Buc-ee’s: 53,000 square feet, 120 gas pumps, all on 20 acres.
Buc-ee’s has built a near-cult following. It’s the only convenience store I know that has shopping carts, because many people plan their travel stops around a shopping expedition there. Beef jerky, kolaches, and BBQ sandwiches are among the favorite items, although they have enough non-food merch to fill that cart.
Tumblr media
Buc-ee’s is a disruptor. They do not allow trucks. There are no diesel pumps available. And they have addressed one of the biggest concerns among travelers: clean restrooms. The entire property is well-lit at night, and it becomes obvious to this marketer that the primary target is women, whether traveling solo or as a family. I am pretty sure there are no better selling points to women than clean restrooms and safety, and traditional truck stops just don’t fit that bill.
You won’t find lot lizards at Buc-ee’s.
Naturally, not everyone is enamored of them. Truckers hate that they are not welcomed. There was even a community in North Carolina that came together to quash plans for a new Buc-ee’s there along I-40. And then there are concerns that Buc-ee’s owner Arch “Beaver” Aplin III has been a major contributor to Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the state GOP.
And, of course, local competitors fear the Beaver, which becomes the 800-pound-gorilla along the freeway. In Amarillo, I can especially guess the fears that local companies Toot-N-Totum, with its new travel center one mile west of the new Buc-ee’s location, and CEFCO, with a major new travel center under construction between Amarillo and Canyon, must be feeling.
While Amarilloans appear to be ecstatic over the Buc-ee’s announcement, as revealed by hundreds of social media comments, we must remember that Buc-ee’s is really not targeting local customers. They are looking to lure travelers, and their location along I-40 is strategic. It’s not just a kind gesture to Amarillo. Buc-ee’s estimates that more than 50% of its customers here will be from more than 50 miles away. I bet it will be much more than that, especially after the novelty wears off.
I routinely stop at Buc-ee’s when on long haul trips across the south. I can usually count on competitively priced gas, no waiting, a huge coffee station, and restrooms big enough to accommodate dozens of people at once. I can be in and out in about 12 minutes, but I have also been known to people watch on occasion. You can’t stop a marketing prof from simply standing in awe.
If only those first gas station operators could have seen what became of their idea more than a century ago. There wasn’t a need then for such extravagance, the likes of which today find some people comparing Buc-ee’s to a carnival. But if they had even half an inkling, I bet they would have done things differently.
Like maybe have four pumps.

Live Picks: 8/30-9/2
Tumblr media
L.A. Witch
BY JORDAN MAINZER
We got ya covered through Sunday!
8/30: Set It Off, Subterranean
We previewed Tampa symphonic rock band Set It Off’s set at The Forge earlier this year, describing them as “a Warped Tour-approved band who has released three albums, the most prominent 2016′s Upside Down but the best 2014′s sickly sweet Duality, which found success in the grand condition of cheesy concept records, its theatrical, sweeping melodies and instrumentation overcoming its less palatable pop rock aspects.”
Since then, the band has signed to Fearless Records and released a new song, the faux-industrial emo, overproduced “Killer in the Mirror”.
Indie pop duo Chapel and rapper De’Wayne Jackson open.
8/30: Round Robin, Thalia Hall
We don’t know much about this performance other than that it’s a night of improvisation by people who live in, are from, or are rooted in Chicago music. Judging by the lineup, it’s a must-see. It includes Roscoe Mitchell, Akenya, DJ The Twilite Tone, poet Kevin Coval, Tortoise’s Jeff Parker, and SILY favorites like Matana Roberts, Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux, Mind Over Mirrors’ Jamie Fennelly, Chicago Symphony Orchestra cellist Katinka Kleijn, Matchess, and Makaya McCraven.
8/30: L.A. Witch, Beat Kitchen
Drawling psychedelic band L.A. Witch released their self-titled debut last year and have been touring strong off of it ever since. Expect to hear lots from the record and hopefully some new material.
Spacey band Moonwalks and local sludgy post-punk duo Pussyfoot open.
8/31: Miguel, Union Park
We previewed Miguel’s show at the Riviera earlier this year:
“War & Leisure, the latest album from Miguel, is, as its title suggests, simultaneously political and personal, the former somewhat new territory for him. The songs are varied as usual; he’s sultry on “Wolf”, funky on the synth-addled “Told You So”, and ready for the radio on the Travis Scott-featuring “Sky Walker”. Stylistically, it’s sort of a combination of his previous two albums, the drug-induced Kaleidoscope Dream and guitar-oriented Wildheart. And while it’s not as earth-shattering and trendsetting as those two, it’s perhaps his most cohesive and fully realized effort.”
Since then, he’s performed “Remember Me” from Coco at the Oscars and shared a new song, “Python”, among other things. At his headlining North Coast Music Festival slot, he should mix it up between his last three albums live, concentrating on War & Leisure.
8/31 & 9/1: Kidd Jordan and Friends, Constellation
Dog/Days is a week of free performances at Constellation, Links Hall, and Hungry Brain. This Friday at Constellation, jazz saxophonist Kidd Jordan plays with pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker, and drummer Alvin Fielder.
8/31 & 9/1: B-52′s, Ravinia
The Athens, Georgia freak new wave band’s got a decade worth of untouchable material, and they play almost all the highlights during their live set, plus the goofy as hell title track to Funplex. What’s not to love?
New wave legends Culture Club co-headlines. Thompson Twins’ lead vocalist Tom Bailey opens.
9/1: Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, Reggie’s
Soul Flowers of Titan, the new album from Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, is purportedly inspired by Sun Ra and the King Records/Federal Records Cincinnati sound of the 50′s-60′s. Is the latter noticeable? Definitely. The former? Not sure. Most of the songs, like the chaotically horn-laden “Slowly Losing My Mind” and the garage-meets-soul “Pain”, are in line with tracks from recent efforts Under the Savage Sky and Dig Thy Savage Soul. Though I guess the spirit of blues ditty “Let’s Go to Mars” is closest thematically to “space is the place,” much of Soul Flowers of Titan sounds right at home with the rest of Whitfield’s discography. And that’s a good thing, since Saturday at Reggie’s they’ll play a lot of it, plus some highlights from the band’s pre-Bloodshot Records days.
Garage rockers The Woggles headline. Baby Money & The Down Payments, the project of Chicago based songwriter Pamela Maurer open.
9/1: Sumac, Empty Bottle
Post-metal band Sumac headlines Empty Bottle as part of Scorched Tundra X. Earlier this year, they released a mammoth collaborative album with Keiji Haino, and next month, they follow up 2016′s What One Becomes with a new full-length, Love in Shadow. So far, they’ve released the 15-minute “Attis’ Blade”, which builds and sprawls to a mid-section of noise, quiet strumming, and back before revealing longing growls from Aaron Turner. I’ve heard the rest of the album, too, and it’s a good mix of new territory for the band combined with what they’ve always done well. 21-minute Opener “The Task” starts like a traditional metal song but dissolves into a calm eye before the storm of more brutality and the band’s trademark buzzing dissonance, all before ending with organs and Turner’s guttural moans. “Arcing Silver” is the shortest and most straightforward of the bunch in terms of its arrangements, peaks, and valleys, though it does end with some ambient guitar squalls that introduce more jams. And the introductory guitar tones on closer “Ecstasy of Unbecoming” are more reminiscent of Sufi music than metal, though distorted power riffing kicks the rest of the song into high gear.
Avant-garde metal band Yakuza, doom band In The Company Of Serpents, and hardcore band Couch Slut open.
9/2: Matthew Dear, Estate Ultrabar
We previewed Matthew Dear’s DJ set at smartbar earlier this year:
“Truth is, I have never been a huge fan of Matthew Dear’s original material for whatever reason–but his almost 3-hour entry in the DJ Kicks series from last year shows just how good of a curator he really is, starting with a meditative Nils Frahm track and just exploding into a dance frenzy from there. That’s why his DJ set at smartbar should be one of the best you’ll see all year.”
This time around, he’s headlining a BBQ at Estate. He’s releasing a new album Bunny in October and has revealed two tracks: the hypnotic “Bunny’s Dream” and the repetitive “Echo”.
Remix extraordinaire Josh Wink, Canadian DJ Kenny Glasgow, Fortune, Pershan, and Nick Jannite also spin.
9/2: Rapsody, Union Park
After being prominently featured on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, last year, Rapsody released her own “one of the best of the decade” rap albums. Laila’s Wisdom sees Rapsody proud to be a black woman in the rap game. “Yeah, they call me black and ugly / But I go so hard, make the whole world love me,” she spits. Sure, her features--Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Black Thought, Busta Rhymes, and BJ The Chicago Kid among them--are impressive. But her flow, especially on songs like the unstoppable “You Should Know”, the funky “Pay Up”, and the skronking “Power” (she outshines even Lamar on that one), is the main attraction. She’ll be worth the one day price of admission at North Coast.
9/2: Hannibal Buress, Chicago Theatre
We previewed Hannibal Buress’ set at Arcada Theatre back in March:
“Hannibal Buress is both a comedian for the world and Chicago, so seeing him in the area presents lots of opportunity for in-jokes. (The one about the ridiculousness of being asked for an ID at O’Hare airport from his 2015 special Comedy Camisado comes to mind.) While he’s probably best known these days for his role on Broad City, he’s increasingly building up his filmography and TV appearances and has recently started a podcast, The Handsome Rambler, on which he’s interviewed Open Mike Eagle and Run The Jewels. But he’s funniest on stage.”

Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition award recipients announced - Buckrail - Jackson Hole, news
Photo: Anna Kolosyuk
WYOMING — As this year’s Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition comes to a close, winners of the Governor’s Choice and Bobby Hathaway Juror’s Choice awards, as well as purchase awards have been announced by the Wyoming State Museum
Governor Mark Gordon chose the piece “Cloud #14” by Cheyenne artist Danielle Kirby for the Governor’s choice award.
“There is a calmness to the piece,” Gov. Gordon said in selecting his favorite piece. “The artist caught a special interplay of the lighting, colors and landscape; and a special mood we have all felt in Wyoming.”
Gregory Tegarden of Sul Ross State University, in Alpine, TX was the juror for the exhibition and selected the piece “Lotus Bowl” by Wilson artists Laurie Thal and Dan Altwies for the Bobby Hathaway juror’s choice award.
“Lotus Bowl is an incredible piece of glasswork that can be functional or sculptural,” Tegarden said of the piece. “The level of craftsmanship and the complexity of design made it stand out. Having worked with glass, I am aware of the complexities inherent in the medium and can fully appreciate the amount of work and skill that went into making such a piece. Lotus Bowl is a great example of form and function meeting beauty. It is an inspiration to me and a superb addition to the contemporary craft movement.”
The 2020 Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition comes to an end on Thursday, August 13 at 5 p.m. The works of 62 artists representing 17 Wyoming counties were included in this year’s show. The juried exhibition, which is staged every two years, was on display from February 20 through August 13 in the Capitol Extension in Cheyenne. This was the first time in its 20-year history the Exhibition was not held at the Wyoming State Museum.
Works receiving purchase awards, the Governor’s choice award, and the Bobby Hathaway juror’s choice award are normally announced during a reception and awards ceremony. This year, due to precautions over COVID-19, there is not a reception. The works receiving purchase awards will join the museum’s prestigious art collections. Both the Governor’s choice award and Bobby Hathaway juror’s choice award receive a monetary prize.
In addition to the previously mentioned award winners, purchase award recipients are: “Moon Setting over the Hernandez’s,” Barrie Bryant, Kirby, Archival pigment print; “Local Ass,” Lori Kostur, Saratoga, Oil on panel; “BBQ at the Blumenschein,” David McDougall, Dayton, Acrylic on board; and “I-80 West of Laramie,” Georgia Roswell, Cheyenne, Textiles.

Like Big Cat Weekend, the goal of this past weekend was to get a number of top targets on campus in order to lay the groundwork for future booms. Mission accomplished.
This week is a unique week on the recruiting trail. For much of July and all of August, it’s the dead period in recruiting which means that prospects and coaching staffs can not have any face to face contact. But from July 25th to July 31st, there is a quiet period which allows recruits to have face to face contact only on a college campus. That has lead to the majority of programs throwing very large recruiting events in hopes of getting their top targets on campus one more time before fall camp begins.
Starting in 2016, Auburn has taken advantage of this time period by throwing a picnic/bbq event at the end of each July. It’s almost like a second Big Cat Weekend though its focus is a bit more split between this class and future ones. It’s proven to be successful thus far. This year it looks likely to have the same results.
The Tigers landed one commit and sure sounds like a few more could pop in the coming weeks. Like Big Cat Weekend, the goal of this event isn’t necessarily to land same day commits. Instead, it’s to forge strong bonds not only between their top targets and the coaching staff but also allow current commits and future targets to bond as well. Often times, it’s the connection between fellow prospects that ends up mattering just as much as the relationships with the coaching staff.
Here’s a rundown of who made the trip and updates on their recruitments.
Auburn Commits
4* LB Trenton Simpson
4* LB Wesley Steiner
4* WR Kobe Hudson
4* WR Ze’Vian Capers
4* WR JJ Evans
4* LB Cameron Riley
3* OG Tate Johnson
3* OG Avery Jernigan
3* OT Jeremiah Wright
3* QB Chayill Garnett
3* OT Jonathan Buskey
All but four Auburn commits made it to campus this past weekend and it doesn’t appear that any of the four showed up at other events. Last year, George Pickens spurned Auburn’s event for Georgia’s, something that in hindsight proved more important than I realized at the time so I was playing close attention to see if something similar went down this year. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be the case and even more importantly, the majority of Auburn’s top ranked commits made the trip to help the staff recruit.
The biggest news from this group is obviously Wright’s commitment. He’s someone JB Grimes has wanted for a long time and Auburn is reportedly thrilled they could get him on board before the season. He gives Auburn 6 offensive line commits which could mean they are done at that position. However, they will reportedly continue to pursue some JUCO OT talent and don’t be surprised if they host some more OL official visitors during the season.

2020 Targets
4* RB Tank Bigsby
4* WR EJ Williams
4* DB Ladarius Tennison
4* CB Marco Domio (JUCO)
4* CB Kendall Dennis
4* DB Brian George (JUCO)
3* DL/Buck Rashad Whitehead
3* DE Bradyn Swinson
K Evan McGuire
One of the bigger storylines this weekend was tracking where Tank Bigsby would visit. There was confidence that he would be on the Plains but with Tank anything is possible. Well the nation’s #7 running back elected to head to Auburn over Athens and even more importantly returned Sunday to talk with the staff. This is turning into an AU alum showdown between Carnell Williams and Dell McGee. Can Caddy land his first big boom as an assistant? That possibility feels MUCH more realistic than it did just a few weeks ago.
The other big time offensive target to visit was Phenix City native EJ Williams. He was close to being an AU commit following this event last year but his recruitment absolutely exploded during the fall and now Auburn has been playing catch up. The good news is he stated Auburn had moved up to #2 on his list following the visit. The bad news is Clemson continues to lead and with a decision coming at the end of August, it’s hard to see this one going Auburn’s way. Luckily, the Tigers already have a very strong WR class committed so Williams is more of a “really nice to have” than a necessity.
It’s been hard to get a handle on Auburn’s top DB targets this cycle and even harder to know who might actually be favoring the Tigers. That picture got a lot more clear this weekend. All four DB prospects that visited are absolute takes for the Tigers and there’s a chance all four might now be favoring Auburn. Two are JUCO prospects Marco Domio and Brian George. Both have already used official visits to the Plains and could be closing in on a decision. Interestingly, EJ Williams was only one of two uncommitted prospects to visit Auburn for both Big Cat Weekend and the War Eagle Picnic. The other? The nation’s #2 JUCO cornerback Brian George. Jason Caldwell also reports that Domio’s flight was cancelled which could have meant taking the much shorter drive to College Station but his family instead elected to drive 10 hours to the Plains. The JUCO prospects also reportedly spent a lot of time together during the event. Auburn very well could have to replace both starting cornerbacks next season. Signing two of the top three JUCO recruits this cycle sure ain’t a bad way of going about filling that hole.
As for prep targets LaDarrius Tennison and Kendall Dennis, both have been reported in the past as having Auburn as a top school. But you really can’t start taking players’ interest seriously until they start taking multiple visits to campus. The fact both elected to travel to Auburn for this weekend is big news. Getting Domio, George, Tennison and Dennis in this year’s class would be huge for Auburn. The other name to continue to track is 4* CB Ethan Pouncey. Chances are good at least three from that group will be Auburn Tigers next season.
2021 Targets
5* DB Ga’Quincy McKinstry
5* DT Lee Hunter
4* WR Jaquez Smith
4* WR Julian Nixon
4* WR Dacari Collins
3* LB Chaz Chambliss
3* QB Aaron McLaughlin
3* DT Isaac Washington
3* WR Jackson Meeks
3* OL JT Pennington
This weekend wasn’t just about locking down some top 2020 targets, it was also about getting a jump start on the 2021 class. The recruiting cycles kick into gear so much earlier with the new early signing period. That’s why Auburn really split their focus of this event between finishing out their current class and getting a foundation in place for the next one. It sounds like they made signifiant progress on both.
It’s believed that Kenny Dillingham’s cryptic tweets on Saturday evening about a 2nd possible commit were in regards to Alpharetta, GA native Aaron McLaughlin. The 6’4” 225 lb gunslinger camped (along with 3* Will Crowder) with the Tigers on Friday and it sounds like he impressed both Gus Malzahn and Kenny Dillingham. So much so that the Tigers are hoping to get him on board very soon. It’s interesting that Auburn might go so hard after a pro style QB given Auburn’s recent focus on dual threat prospects the past few classes, but supposedly McLaughlin showed enough mobility during camp to make the coaching staff feel good about him being able to run the whole offense. One thing is for sure though this dude can throw the football.
McLaughlin might not be the only future 2021 boom. Lee Hunter has long favored the Tigers so much so that when asked about his top schools his answer was “Auburn, Auburn, Auburn, Auburn”. The Eight Mile, AL native is a 247 Composite 5* already and expected to be one of the top prospects in the country next season. Landing Hunter would be a massive early boom for this 2021 class. He reminds me a lot of Derrick Brown at this point in his career and I don’t say that lightly.
Hunter wasn’t the only instate 5* on campus. The man they call Kool-Aid, Ga’Quincy McKinstry, was back on campus again this weekend. Ranked as the nation’s #15 overall prospect in the 2021 class, McKinstry has long been a frequent visitor to the Plains. But this trip was a bit different as it wasn’t only Gus Malzahn that wanted to meet with him. Bruce Pearl stopped by and let McKinstry know that he also has an offer to play basketball for the Tigers.
#AG2G Truly Blessed & Honored ‼️To Receive An Basketball ⭕️ffer From Auburn University... I WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO PLAY BOTH SPORTS #WAREAGLE @coachbarber @CoachFlanigan pic.twitter.com/Jcaq6Xprul
— GaQuincy McKinstry™ (@GaQMcK1) July 28, 2019
You don’t see many kids play both football and basketball in college but Auburn is willing to let McKinstry do both. This is going to be one of the most hotly contested recruitments in the state next cycle. It will be interesting to see if Alabama follows Auburn’s lead and gives Kool-Aid a chance to be a dual sport athlete at the next level.
Finally, file the name Isaac Washington away. Visiting from Pilot Mountain, NC, Washington appears to be an early top target for Rodney Garner. He left the Plains with the Tigers on top. Don’t be surprised if his name quickly climbs the prospect rankings over the next year.
Really great day at Auburn University yesterday one of the best days of my life thank you @coachg76 & @CoachGusMalzahn for everything can’t wait to be back. #WAREAGLE pic.twitter.com/LIQQfUQ4A9

2022
OL Lucas Taylor
QB MJ Morris
DT Dominick James
DB Andre Stewart
DB Khamauri Rogers
I will admit that even my obsessiveness over recruiting hasn’t lead me to watch much 2022 film but there was a bit of news from this list. Khamauri Rogers left the Plains with an offer in hand. Given Auburn’s recent success in the state of Mississippi and Rogers having Marcus Woodson has his position coach, I think he’s a name to track over the next couple of cycles. I am guessing we will see him on campus more in the future.

The Ultimate Southern USA Road Trip Guide • The Blonde Abroad
The southern United States is unlike anywhere else you will ever go. Hot weather, warm smiles, and arguably some of the best grub in the country make up the foundation of this unique region. The best way to get to know the South is by hitting the road!
As a note, this loose itinerary is meant to serve as a guide and you can follow it in either direction! While I started in New Orleans, you could definitely flip it around and start off your journey in Georgia.
While I’ve laid out some of the highlights, but I think one of the best parts about a road trip is adding in your own special stops along the way! I like to use Roadtrippers to design the trip and map out where my “anchor” stops are, and then find fun stops in between.
Here’s the ultimate Southern USA road trip guide!
Charleston Trip on Roadtrippers
Southern USA Road Trip Highlights
New Orleans, Louisiana
Jackson, Mississippi
Memphis, Tennessee
Nashville, Tennessee
Charlotte, North Carolina
Charleston, South Carolina
Savannah, Georgia
*If you wanted to extend the trip, you could add in Atlanta, Georgia, and make your way into Alabama. It just depends on how much time you have!
As you’re planning, make sure to check out these 10 essential tips for your road trip!
New Orleans, Louisiana
Kick-off your trip in New Orleans!
Since this is a long stretch, you can break up the drive by spending a night along the way. It’s an awesome opportunity to get off the beaten track and explore more of Louisiana.
I fell in love with New Orleans when I went for Mardi Gras. While I’d love to go back for another Fat Tuesday, the city is equally impressive every day of the year. Just wandering the city, you’ll get a sense of New Orleans’ complex past and unique culture!
Top Things to See and Do in New Orleans
The French Quarter never disappoints
Get down and dirty on Bourbon Street or go for an upscale evening on Frenchmen Street
Visit the oldest cathedral on the continent, St. Louis Cathedral, which was built in 1720
Visit the Carousel Bar — yes, there is a carousel inside the bar!
Go on a ghost tour and learn about the city’s many legends
Top Places to Eat in New Orleans
Detour: Take a Bayou Tour in Louisiana
On my trip, I took a couple of hours to tour the Manchac swamp with Wild Louisiana Tours! It was such a cool experience, there was a moment where I felt like I was in The Notebook.
You’ll see the logging ghost town of Ruddock that served as a passageway for historic New Orleans explorers and well as Iberville, Bienville, Ponchartrain, and more!
Detour: Learn About Plantations
During my Southern USA Road Trip, I was completely awestruck by the Live Oaks at the entrance to Oak Alley Plantation. I’d seen plenty of photos of Oak Alley, but it was even grander in person.
The plantation has been featured in many movies and music videos including Interview with The Vampire, Django Unchained, and Beyoncé’s “Déjà Vu” music video!
While Oak Alley is beautiful, it’s incredibly important to understand what the plantations mean in a historical context and today. For an in-depth look and to reflect on the atrocities of slavery and its lasting impact, make a trip to Whitney Plantation.
Jackson, Mississippi
Take I-55 North from New Orleans to Jackson – 190 miles
Jackson is the capital of Mississippi and home to a funky arts scene, good bars and restaurants, and A LOT of live music!

With its weather in the upper 70s in the dead of winter, Charleston is the perfect place for beach lovers! It’s a quaint city, but there are tons of things to do.
Top Things to See and Do in Charleston
Get moving and rent a bike to ride across the famous Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge
Don’t miss the Angel Oak Park—one of South Carolina’s most remarkable sites—you’ll find a massive 1,500-year-old oak tree, which is a true sight to behold
Prime places to stay in Charleston are the Wentworth Mansion, anywhere on King Street, or the Restoration Hotel (they offer in-room spa services)
Rainbow Row is a series of thirteen colorful historic houses and is the longest cluster of Georgian row houses in the United States. It’s best to go here in the morning when there are fewer people and soft lighting.
Mosey through the Waterfront Park — a gorgeous eight-acre park along the Cooper River.
The City Market in downtown Charleston is a must — even if you’re just walking through (though you could easily spend all day here). Established in the 1790s, this historic market stretches four city blocks.
Want to explore a truly Southern garden meets swamp? Head to Cypress Gardens for the 80 acres of blackwater bald cypress/tupelo swamp, surrounded with both boat and foot trails.
If you’re taking this trip in the spring, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is brimming with azaleas!
Not to be confused with the above, Magnolia Cemetary is worth visiting, too.
Book a tour to get the history of the Gilded Age Calhoun Mansion
Top Places to Eat and Drink in Charleston
Grab cocktails at Vendue Rooftop Bar
You absolutely must dine at Husk Restaurant (make reservations well beforehand!)
Head to Callie’s Biscuit for some of the tastiest award-winning biscuits, southern tea sandwiches, grits, and locally-inspired dishes
Dinner at FIG is lovely — an elevated take on Southern classics
Have dinner, or at the very least, cocktails at 5church (located in a former church, the interior is super cool!)
Detour: Folly Beach
Bring your bikini and lounge in the Carolina sun on Folly Beach during the better part of the year. Just south of Charleston, you’ll find Folly Beach Pier which stretches more than 1,000 feet into the ocean. Center Street is lined with the cutest surf shops and you’ll find tons of souvenirs.
Detour: Stop in Beaufort
Walk or drive around here. The Beaufort River wraps around this area and served as the location for many scenes from Forrest Gump and The Big Chill. It’s halfway between Savannah and Charleston and would make a great stop for lunch.
How gorgeous is Forsyth Park?
Savannah, Georgia
Take US-17 South and I-95 South from Charleston to Savannah – 108 miles
Known for manicured parks, tons of historic architecture, cobblestoned squares, and tons of oak trees covered with Spanish moss, Savannah is a picturesque stop.
Top Things to See and Do in Savannah
Head to Tybee Island for beach vibes (about 20 minutes from Savannah). There’s tons of history here too and a cute pier and pavilion.
Wormsloe Plantation Historic Site is a must for photos. Try to get there slightly before it opens to snap shots without folks or cars.
Exploring River Street is an absolute must. A mix of new buildings and old warehouses, there are tons of shops, galleries, restaurants, and pubs on this stretch of Savannah’s Waterfront
Forsyth Park is a large city park in the historic district of Savannah. If you’re there on a summer Saturday, there’s usually a big farmers’ market going on!
Savannah is said to be one of the most haunted cities in the US, go on a ghost tour or haunted pub crawl!
The City Market is an open-air market dating back to the 1700s
Prepare to find so many goodies at The Paris Market — a charming boutique with an eclectic range of antiques, housewares, and jewelry.
Top Places to Eat and Drink in Savannah
Leopold’s Ice Cream on Broughton St.
Have breakfast and coffee at The Collins Quarter on Bull Street
B. Matthews Eatery — for classic and new American fare, this charming bistro in an updated vintage space is a go-to
Vic’s on the River for dinner — located in a 19th-century warehouse, you can’t beat the food or the cool interior.
While it’s very pricey, dinner at the famed Olde Pink House is a Savannah staple
Mrs. Wilkes  — Family-owned since 1943, this busy diner serves ample Southern-style breakfast and lunches at communal tables.
For a cool, dark, and cozy vibe — go to the Mata Hari speakeasy. Heads up: you must have a key to get in!
Jen’s and Friends is an awesome martini bar with tons of martini flavors (seriously! From Bananas Foster to birthday cake)
The Peregrin Rooftop Bar has great cocktails and an awesome view of the city
Plan Your Trip
Want to use this itinerary for your road trip but add a few of your own twists to it? I love using Roadtrippers to plan out my stops—figure out how long I’m driving in between them, and find popular spots and pit-stops along the way.
And there you have it, folks! My ultimate guide to a Southern USA road trip! What places would you add to this list? Any hidden gems? I’d love to hear all about it in the comments below!
