Before and After. My first-ever SCA Competition Steaks at the NBBQA “I Am BBQ 2017 ” Conference in Fort Worth, TX. How’d they do? Video Coming Soon…
Only a year ago, the thought of attending my first Conference of the National Barbecue and Grilling Association (NBBQA), was quite intimidating. I was not only nervous to meet (and be…

do you have trans hcs for any other characters in promare? :0
I do! under cut cause im a TALKER whoops.
uhhh trigger warning that i do talk a bit about transphobia and unsupportive family.
I realize in my last post I didn’t mention it but Gueira and Meis aren’t cis!
Gueira was born intersex and doesn’t agree to calling himself cis or trans. He is proud to be intersex. (do know this is a fictional character and not all real life people who are intersex agree or disagree with calling themselves cis or trans.)
Gueira uses he/him pronouns but doesn’t strictly dress masculine. Really just a comfy clothes wearer.
Meis is trans genderfluid. Mostly uses they/them pronouns and has girl days or boy days sometimes where they can be more okay with she/her or he/him. Just leans into a mix usually. Actually doesn’t like being called Gueira’s boyfriend and rather ‘partner’. Gueira says it like a cowboy usually to make Meis giggle.
I do enjoy Ignis being an trans elder. (He is like 55 in my mind not 40 as i think canon states?) Ignis knew Galo was trans upon entering the job but of course did not out Galo to everyone. Galo isn’t secretive about being trans though. When Galo finds out Ignis is trans he cries happy tears and hugs him, making Ignis just a lil uncomfortable but not rejecting the hug.. hes got a reputation Galo.
I always had it in my head that Galo joined Burning Rescue and challenged all their thoughts on gender and etc. Considering they all grew up in a strict propaganda filled city some of them mightve just heard of terms but not thought about it too hard for..reasons. But then Galo comes into the work place being the ‘queer kid’ and wouldn’t take any bullshit. He grew up mostly by themself, discovered things on his own and does still feel that outward pressure to conform (esp with Kray, Galo is the most ‘passing as cis’ as he can be around Kray most times). So I thought mostly about everyone in BR were cis, not all of them straight but cis...bbuuutttt
Galo makes everyone question their thoughts on gender cause Galo is so open about his own and loves helping others. Galo does ‘mask’ themself sometimes and at first joining didn’t go full blown open. But one day Lucia needs a tampon and Galo had one in his bag and Lucia is like ‘um what?’ Galo goes casual and just ‘oh yeah.. i don’t need them anymore but its become habit to carry it around yaknow and you never know when it could come in handy!’
Lucia is the first to question if its okay to be non-binary lesbian, like maybe shes not entirely strictly ‘girl’. She’s loud and proud about being gay, lesbian flag above her desk, talks bout going to lesbian bars and wanting to just hold a girls hand. So she’s the first to feel okay enough to question herself gender wise.
Varys is that guy you might know in life who is just chill about everything. Galo comes out to Varys casually one day and Varys doesn’t linger on it at all. “Trans? Hell yeah! We still going out for bbq? Double hell yeah!” But he’s also a guy you never know whats going on in their head. He just remembers weirdly specific things you say sometimes and comes back at you with them later. Galo mentioned briefly that sunflowers remind him of his mother. Varys mails Galo sunflowers when Galo takes the day off on his mothers bday. Varys also randomly texts Galo ‘hey you know how youre trans, can i be like not always a man?’
Remi............................reMI UH. Remi is weird in my head. I feel hes that guy who just makes everything into a TMI or sex joke or just awkwardly flirts with everyone he becomes friendly with. Like just pushes the boundaries cause he thinks were friends now i can do this, without realizing hes over stepped them. That guy who thinks just cause your his friend now we can talk about sex casually. Hes quick to apologize when told off but still. I’m horrible I feel like Remi is that guy who’d consider him getting pegged by his girlfriend means he’s in with the lgbt crowd. He’s cis and comfortable with that and is confused by non-binary identities but won’t insult his coworkers and respect them. Eventually he’ll learn that just cause you are over 18 now, not everything in the world is related to sex. Idk if that made sense or if I threw him under the die-cis-scum buss too hard.
AND THEN THERE IS AINA.
Who... I adore. And even my head canons for her contrast and complement Galo like her story/character in the movie. So....shes trans.
We don’t get info about her family life but I’m assuming her sister raised her by herself and the parents weren’t in the picture. Aina came out to her sister right out of high school. Heris was starting college and working to provide for her and Aina. She flipped out on her and her words were ‘i dont care if youre a girl or a boy but those hormones can be pricey we dont have insurance you cant get surgery your too young, etc etc’ Unsupported in misreading the situation as an inconvenience to money and life and not the actuality of Aina just being herself and wanting to be honest about it.
Aina gets ignored as her sisters career and life revolves around a sudden job with the Foundation. But Heris has money now. And is “supportive” in giving Aina money. Pays for her HRT, doctor visits, therapy, and then eventually training to be in Burning Rescue. And Heris is adamant that Aina never, EVER tells anyone she’s trans. Sweeps up any possible info about that under the rug. Doesn’t want to be looked at with a bad eye from Foresight. What Heris feels is a safety measure for her family is what Aina sees as shame. Kinda reflecting how Heris in the movie sees that shes doing ‘all this for you, Aina’ only for it to be cruel and harmful directly to Aina.
Aina doesn’t know what drew her to Galo. He’s cute and nice and friendly. Maybe it’s a crush? He understands me and no one ever did. He respects me for me. “Youre you Aina and theres nothing wrong with that.” (I forget the exact quote) The words play in her head for the longest time. She never came out to Burning Rescue for fear, cause Heris said not to, cause its ‘inconvenient’. And suddenly Galo is loud and proud about being trans??? Should she be too??
Eventually she confides in Galo. Probably after the Parnassus events. She realizes she doesn’t have a crush and was just not use to someone being nice to her and accepting her. She eventually tells the rest of Burning Rescue. Finds out Ignis knew all along due to paperwork but just once again, Captain isn’t gonna out his team member.
And then finally during a late night movie sleepover. Galo’s like ‘you know we should hang the trans and non binary flag on the front of the station.’ Lucia goes ‘YEAH a big FUCK YOU to the Foundations normies!!!!’ Aina says ‘we should really run that past Captain first...’ Finally Ignis walks in, tilts down his sunglasses and says ‘I planned for this’ and unveils a flag that just says ‘fight the cis-tem’ and Galo and Lucia SCREAM. Only Galo knew Ignis was trans til that point..
I made a STORY damn.
I hope that wasn’t... too much... thank for reading.... ;u;/

Today, the museum honors Texans who sacrificed everything to secure and defend freedom and liberty. The museum covers the time period of the Texas Revolution, through the present day.
When you take a tour you’ll be transported back to a time before, whether you’re listening to stories about the fight for Texas Independence, or recounting the Jail’s century of history.
There is no admission charge to tour the jail and the museum.

Let’s continue to give to this GREAT cause.
Fri 3/6 Noon
It’s Foodie Friday again!
This week we’re highlighting a La Grange staple… Lukas Bakery(tag)!
During World War II, Raymond Lukas joined the army to serve his country. After he was honorably discharged Lukas continued to serve by baking for those at Camp Swift in Bastrop.
Around this time, Lucille Kurio was attending a local wedding when she ate a cake so heavenly she proclaimed she NEEDED to marry the man who’d made it.
Remember Raymond? He happened to be the baker of said cake, and by happenstance he’d been standing behind Lucille when she’d made her proclamation. He became enamored with her and 4 short months later, they were engaged.
In 1947, the two opened Lukas Bakery, and it’s been family owned and operated since, baking everything from scratch, just like Raymond once did.
Today, they serve everything from loaves of bread and homemade noodles, to cookies, kolaches, and “the best pigs in Texas”.
Stop in, and check out their AMAZING pastry selection before browsing the rest of La Grange’s Downtown Square!
Just a word to the wise… Lukas Bakery only accepts cash and is open from 5:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m Monday through Saturday.

ALL ABOARD!
If you’re in La Grange this weekend, be sure to stop by the M-K-T Depot!
The Depot was completed in November 1897 by the M-K-T Railroad (specifically: the Taylor, Bastrop, and Houston Railroad). It replaced the earlier depot that was on this site from 1887 until it burned in March 1897.
It’s sure to be fun for the whole family as the depot now houses the La Grange Depot Museum, which has a lot of cool information about train history in the area! It is open to the public every Saturday (except some holidays) from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Thursday March 12th
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…
Former President Theodore Roosevelt (pictured with the X over his head) spoke a few words to a large gathering of La Grange citizens at the current M-K-T Depot.
At the time, Roosevelt had friends in the area who were privy to the fact he’d be passing through.
Together, the town got to work and sent a telegraph to Judge Walther Burns saying, “The city council of La Grange has passed an ordinance strictly prohibiting any ex-president from passing through this city without making at least a five minute stop. You will please so instruct the Roosevelt committee and warn them against a violation of this ordinance.” Burns immediately passed the telegram to Roosevelt who responded, “By all means, let the train stop at La Grange. We are in a hurry, but are not taking such chances as to violate city ordinances.”
109 years ago today, March 12th of 1911, Roosevelt arrived, shook hands with the friends he knew, and then commenced his 5 minute speech. He was well received by the people of La Grange.
It’s unknown what all was said verbatim, however the clipping of the La Grange Journal from the week of the event stated that Roosevelt had lots of good praise for both Texans, and Texas.
Afterwards the crowd stayed behind to watch him depart and the train disappear.
March 13th at noon
It’s Foodie Friday again!

SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES!
It’s amazing what you can create while quilting! The artists at The Quilt Museum create truly stunning designs.
Over 60,000 people from every state, and 58 different countries have visited the Museum in its lifetime (almost 10 years!).
This week the Quilt Museum will be presenting a new exhibit, and they change it out every 3 months so you’ll always see something new.
We encourage you to swing by, if you’ve never been or if you have before, you won’t be disappointed with their displays! Afterwards stop by their period garden which is adjacent to the Museum it shows what would be typical of “city gardens” in Fayette County and Central Texas around the time of our buildings, about 1890, through the 1930s, and is one of only a few.

Pedigree Foundation to Host a Special Evening with LeAnn Rimes
Pedigree Foundation celebrates 10-year anniversary to honour a decade of giving back to shelters and rescues
The Pedigree Foundation will commemorate its 10-Year Anniversary with a special event celebration to honour a decade of giving back to shelters and rescues in the foundation’s Pawty: BBQ, Boots, & Bling will be held on Thursday, 11 October at Marathon Music Works with special music by Grammy award-winning artist LeAnn Rimes.
SiriusXM‘s The Highway host, Storme Warren, will serve as the emcee for the “Pawty.” The event will raise funds to benefit the foundation’s grants programme that supports organisations that help dogs in need find loving homes.
The Pawty will feature a cocktail reception, a BBQ buffet dinner, a silent and LIVE auction with a chance to win fabulous trips and autographed celebrity memorabilia. After dinner, attendees will enjoy an exclusive night of music with multi-platinum selling artist LeAnn Rimes, who skyrocketed into stardom with her breakout country hit “Blue” in 1996. Rimes just released her new Re-Imagined EP on 20 June and will be seen in a new Hallmark Original movie, “It’s Christmas, Eve” this holiday season.
“I am a huge animal lover and I am proud to be a part of the foundation’s fundraising event. I always enjoy performing in Nashville and I look forward to being able to raise much-needed funds to help rescue dogs across the country through this amazing non-profit,” said LeAnn Rimes.
Top event sponsors include Dollar General, Hallmark Channel, and Transcontinental Packaging.
The foundation was established in 2008 by dog lovers with a passionate belief that every dog deserves a loving home. The foundation is a private foundation of Mars Petcare that supports shelters and rescue organisations, as well as encouraging people to adopt, volunteer, and donate.
Since 2008, the foundation has contributed more than US$6.7 million/£5.1 million through 5,000 grants to shelters and rescues across the country, supporting Mars Petcare’s purpose: A Better World for Pets.
“The foundation, through our volunteers and generous donors, has been making a difference in the lives of dogs in need for the last ten years,” said Bo Segers, President of Pedigree Foundation.
“We are excited to be celebrating a decade of finding needy dogs forever homes and to shine the spotlight on the important work our shelter and rescue partners are doing to get more dogs adopted.
“The Pawty is going to be an outstanding event and we are thankful to have fellow dog lovers, LeAnn Rimes and Storme Warren, as part of the evening celebration.”
Other event sponsors include Atlantic Packaging, DDB Worldwide, and Silgan.
The Pedigree brand was a winner of the World Branding Awards (Animalis) 2017-2018 in the Dog Food – Dry/Kibble category.

Feed the Frontline to Serve 10k Weekly Meals to Workers
Originally published by Cox Enterprises
Feed the Frontline, the initiative established in April by the James M. Cox Foundation and Emory Healthcare to provide meals to Atlanta’s frontline workers, is now on track to serve almost 10,000 meals each week.
The program now has more than 1,300 donors including individuals, foundations and corporate contributors and has raised over $1 million. Originally set to serve through May 1, the initiative will extend through May 31 and still needs additional donations in order to reach the program’s goal to feed all frontline workers through the end of the month.
Feed the Frontline’s mission is to offer nourishment and comfort to Atlanta’s frontline healthcare workers serving in emergency rooms, ICUs and critical care wards at 19 Atlanta hospitals — as well as Atlanta police and fire rescue first responders.
As the world continues to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, the opportunity to unite through generosity has emerged with Giving Tuesday Now, the global day of giving on May 5. To donate directly to Feed the Frontline and help provide meals to Atlanta’s frontline, visit http://feedthefrontline.emory.edu/.
Helping the Helpers
Across the country and in Georgia, medical professionals continue to adjust to long hours, increased stress and a new way of working to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Gaurav Budhrani, doctor of anesthesiology and critical care at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, said the meals provide a needed morale boost.
“Serving the healthcare needs of our sick patients in the ICU during these times can be rewarding but is also extremely challenging on both physical and emotional levels,” Budhrani said. “To leave the ICU momentarily and to be surprised with a delicious meal is a huge morale boost, and for that you have my gratitude.”
Since April 3, thousands of meals have been delivered to Atlanta-area hospitals including Emory Healthcare, Grady Health System, Piedmont Health, the Atlanta VA Healthcare System, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Northside Hospital and WellStar Health System. The meals come at no cost to the workers.
“There are so many things to worry about right now and by having the Feed the Frontline program available to us, it gives us one less thing to worry about,” said Katelyn Camuso, a radiation therapist at the Winship Cancer Institute. “Taking care of our patients is our No. 1 top priority. I have benefited from the Feed the Frontline program by being able to have a meal freshly prepared and waiting for me during my lunch. This enables me to be fully prepared to tackle the rest of my day.”
Feed the Frontline’s food service partners include Avalon Catering, Bazati Atlanta, Chef Linton and Gina Hopkins, Chez Montier Catering, DAS BBQ, Fifth Group/Bold Catering, Local Three, Southern Proper Hospitality and Tamarind Restaurant Group.
About the James M. Cox Foundation
The James M. Cox Foundation is named in honor of Cox Enterprises' founder and provides funding for capital campaigns and special projects in communities where the company operates. James M. Cox was Ohio's first three-term governor and the 1920 Democratic nominee for president of the United States. The Foundation concentrates its community support in several areas including: conservation and environment; early childhood education; empowering families and individuals for success; and health.

From Whiskey to Wine, These Drinks Brands Are Giving Back to Areas in Crisis
In January 2020, Gus Gluck, a co-founder of Quality Wines in London, launched a wine auction to raise money for Australia’s wildfire victims. Over the weekend of Jan. 10-12, Gluck auctioned numerous fine and rare Australian wines, benefiting the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund and WIRES Wildlife Rescue Emergency Fund. The one-off auction garnered generous donations from some of the biggest names in the U.K. wine industry, and raised £30,946 — or just over $40,000.
When dire situations such as wildfires arise, it can be difficult to know how to help. But a handful of drinks industry producers, from well-known whiskey distillers to sustainable winemakers, are offering financial support to help aid in recovery.
Here, VinePair reports on seven beverage brands that are paying it forward locally, nationally, and globally through charitable and sustainability-focused initiatives.
1. Buffalo Trace Distillery
Credit: Buffalo Trace / 6millionthbarrel.com
This iconic distillery has a history of charitable giving. In an effort to increase awareness for charities in need across the U.S., Buffalo Trace organized an ongoing initiative to bottle commemorative barrels and make those bottles exclusively available to non-profit organizations at no cost. In 2011, Buffalo Trace bottled its Millennium Barrel — the last barrel of bourbon it produced in the 20th century, on Dec. 31, 1999 — and offered all 174 750-milliliter bottles to non-profit organizations for fundraising purposes. The initiative yielded more than $150,000.
In 2016, Buffalo Trace donated its inaugural O.F.C. Bourbon Whiskey from 1980, 1982, and 1983 to nonprofits, raising more than $1 million. And in 2019, after being aged for 10 years and 11 months, the 6 millionth barrel of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey was put into 400 bottles with the goal of raising $500,000. The goal was reached, and each 375-milliliter bottle was packaged in a numbered hardwood showcase box that included a piece of the charred oak stave from the historic barrel, and a small pamphlet detailing the significance of the collector’s edition.
2. Wild Turkey Distilling Company
Wild Turkey partnered with its creative director, actor, producer, and philanthropist, Matthew McConaughey, to launch “With Thanks,” an annual charitable campaign that encourages “giving back and giving thanks” to people who perform “extraordinary acts” within their communities. The initiative is designed to raise money, coordinate volunteer efforts to aid in disaster relief, and support other philanthropic and environmental conservation efforts.
In 2017, McConaughey and Wild Turkey delivered 4,500 turkeys door to door in the distillery’s hometown of Lawrenceburg, Ky. In 2018, “With Thanks” took McConaughey and Wild Turkey to Houston to express gratitude to the first responders who provided disaster relief during Hurricane Harvey.
In November 2019, McConaughey, Wild Turkey master distiller Eddie Russell, and a group of volunteers from Wild Turkey teamed up with Operation BBQ Relief to cook, prepare, and deliver meals to first responders battling the wildfires in Southern California. McConaughey also took to Facebook Live to encourage individuals nationwide to volunteer and donate to support Operation BBQ Relief’s efforts throughout the country.
Additionally, in 2019, the With Thanks campaign collaborated with Unyoked, an Australian travel startup, to launch an eco-cabin designed by McConaughey in New South Wales. The effort aims to help make visiting the Australian wilderness more accessible while also helping to preserve it for future generations. Proceeds from stays in the cabin and from sales of McConaughey’s Wild Turkey Longbranch bourbon will be donated to the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife.
3. Hangar 1 Distillery
Credit: Hangar 1 Distillery / facebook.com
This California distillery promotes environmental stewardship and water conservation in the Golden State through the forward-thinking process it uses to produce its Fog Point sipping vodka. Staying mindful of California’s seasonal droughts and the necessity for consistent water conservation in the state, Hangar 1 uses water collected from specially designed “fog traps” to capture fog water vapor and condense it into liquid water, which Hangar 1 then blends with the vodka it makes from distilled Chenin Blanc and Viognier wine for its Fog Point product.
Hangar 1’s Fog Point is available for $134 at Reserve Bar, and all profits from the sale of Fog Point go to furthering water conservation efforts in California.
4. Gray Whale Gin
The consciously crafted, California-made Gray Whale Gin celebrates the awe-inspiring gray whale. The spirit takes the drinker on a journey up the Pacific coastline along the gray whales’ 12,000-mile migration pattern from Baja California to Mendocino. Each of the botanicals in the gin is sourced from organic farms or foraged along the migration path of the gray whale, from the citrus in Baja and the juniper in Big Sur to the mint in Santa Cruz and the kombu seaweed in Mendocino.
A portion of the profits from each bottle of Gray Whale Gin, which typically retails for about $40, goes toward Oceana to help protect the world’s oceans.
5. Nosotros Tequila
Credit: Nosotros Tequila / facebook.com
It’s not every day you hear a success story about a business started in a college dorm by a student with about $2,500 in the bank and little knowledge of his chosen industry. Yet, that’s exactly how 25-year-old CEO and founder Carlos Soto of Nosotros Tequila got his start in the spirits industry. Soto, along with co-founder Michael Arbanas, launched the business at the end of their senior year, and within just one year on the market, Nosotros Tequila Blanco was awarded the coveted World’s Best Tequila title and a Double Gold at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, beating out top brands like Milagro, Siete Leguas, Herradura, and others. Nosotros is made from a blend of sustainably sourced, 50 percent highland and 50 percent lowland agaves.
One percent of all Nosotros’ revenue is donated to Waves for Water, an NGO that helps provide clean drinking water and education to communities in need throughout the world.
6. TINCUP Whiskey
Founded and distilled by Jess Graber, TINCUP is a Colorado-based producer of whiskeys that cuts its products to proof with Rocky Mountain spring water. The brand was inspired by the state’s mining pioneers and the tin cups they used to drink the spirit.
TINCUP is a sponsor of Protect Our Winters (POW), an organization founded by pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones in 2007 that leads a community of athletes, thought pioneers, and forward-thinking business leaders to effect systemic solutions to climate change. TINCUP is also an advocate of Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC). The mission of the CAIC is to provide avalanche information and education and to promote research for the protection of life, property, and the enhancement of the state’s economy.
7. Jackson Family Wines
Credit: Jackson Family Wines / jacksonfamilywines.com
Over the last decade, California has been experiencing recurring weather-related disasters, from wildfires to floods, along with warming climates. One of the most significant efforts to address the effects of climate change on the wine industry has been the launch of the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), a global environmental initiative co-founded by Santa Rosa, Calif.-based Jackson Family Wines (JFW) and Spanish wine producer Familia Torres. The IWCA aims to reduce — and eventually eliminate — carbon emissions in the wine industry with the goal of preserving and protecting the heritage of wine throughout the world.
Katie Jackson, JFW’s senior vice president of corporate social responsibility and the daughter of trendsetting winemaking visionary Jess Jackson, is spearheading JFW’s IWCA collaboration. She also manages JFW’s ambitious sustainability program, overseeing its commitment to sustainable farming practices, energy efficiency, carbon emission reduction, waste management, and water conservation efforts for its 40 wineries across the globe.
The Kendall-Jackson winery is one example of how JFW’s efforts are manifesting. Kendall-Jackson uses one-third less water to produce its wines than the industry average. Every bottle of its wine is bottled using 100 percent renewable energy. The winery was one of the early adopters of energy storage through its collaboration with Tesla Energy. Kendall-Jackson also pays a minimum wage of $15 per hour for all of its full-time employees.
