"Can I paint you?" His deep tone vibrated through the room. Amara knew Akeem was musically gifted, but she didn't know he painted.

Akeem admitted it was his first time taking painting seriously. Amara observed the painting, amazed. She couldn't believe how good it was.

"It's hard to capture your beauty in just a painting." He said, looking down at her.

Princess Amara planted a gentle kiss on his cheek. Akeem was a bit taken back. They stood there and smiled at each other for a while. When Amara realized she was locked in with his deep brown eyes, she quickly turned to leave the room.

Maia: Yes, but that’s only part of it. Still, I can’t put all the blame on him. He did what I allowed him to do. And I made choices—like putting my goals on hold—that had nothing to do with him. Somewhere along the way, I lost myself in our relationship. I don’t regret everything, but I want more for you. I want you to be strong and never depend on a man for anything. If you find someone special, they should enhance your life.

Tambara: Daddy doesn’t enhance your life?

Maia: He used to. And don’t get me wrong—I love him and always will. But he doesn’t always see me for who I am. I didn’t grow up the way you and your father did. My father had to scrimp and scrape for every dollar he made, which shaped me. Your father never really understood that—and maybe you don’t either. But at the very least, I want you both to respect it.

Tami thinks about that for a moment.

Tambara: I respect it.

Maia can feel herself tearing up.

Maia: You do?

Tambara: I can’t imagine not having the things we have. It must have been tough.

Tami may not fully get it, but the sentiment touches Maia.

Maia: Sometimes it was. But I didn’t know what I was missing until I grew up and left home. But I did alright for myself and accomplished some big things before I met your father. I hope to continue doing so, starting today. Can I share some good news with you?

Tambara: Is it about Daddy?

Maia: No. I’m sorry.

Maia sees Tami’s disappointment and wishes she could tell Tami what she wants to hear.

Tambara: What is it?

Maia: I’ve always wanted to open a food stand, and now I’m finally making it happen—my application got approved. I’m starting today, as long as the rain holds off.

2 months later...

The Baylight Tavern

The room filled with energy, a chaotic mix of loud college students shouting over one another and a local band playing on the small corner stage. Malaysia sat at the bar alone, finishing her glass of wine before ordering a beer.

A voice cut through the noise, disrupting her from her thoughts.

Bar Guy: Hey. Hey.

She looked up to see a guy, scanning her.

Bar Guy: You look kinda lonely, want some company? Malaysia: Not interested.

She turned her attention back to the bottle. Normally, her disinterest was enough to put people off, but tonight, he wasn’t taking the hint.

Bar Guy: Aw, c’mon. Don’t be like that.

Then his hand landed on her back. She shoved it off her immediately.

Malaysia: DON'T TOUCH ME! Bar Guy: Alright, alright. Chill.

He ordered another beer before disappearing into the crowd, leaving her alone at the bar once again.

Malaysia exhaled, gripping the beer bottle a little tighter. It wasn’t really about the guy. It was everything else that's been weighing her down. The pain of losing her grandmother, the guilt about her son, and the growing tension with Andrei that she couldn’t shake. The alcohol didn’t fix any of it, but it eased her mind just enough to make it bearable.

The truth was, she shouldn't be here. But going home meant facing everything she was trying to avoid, and she wasn’t ready for that, not yet.
