"Here," it's... it's just bread. It's a bun, sure large enough to still some amount of hunger, but it's just bread. And yet, María holds it in front of Patrick with the face of someone who'd consider it a criminal offense to refuse it. Nevermind that she's stolen it from one of the banquets. "Just making sure you're eating." ((RUH-ROH it's Len again~ and I promise I forgot about the Peeta bread thing until I re-read this IGNORE THAT--!! He doesn’t eat much in the Capitol. 

Which is ironic, seeing how most of his life before the games, Patrick was always hungry. Always trying between schooling and factory shifts to figure out when his next meal was going to come. Why else would he and Hyuk have taken out tesserae all those years ago? It was preferable, playing the odds in the Reaping to starving for the rest of the year.

Nowadays, food is the least of his concerns. Whereas there is still a dearth in District Three, there is surplus in the Capitol. No surplus isn’t the right word; a surplus would mean the Capitol keeps the extra for the future. No, there is an excess of food in the Capitol, an excess that is dumped and left to rot after the pigs have had their share, have had their fun.

When he remembers that, food in the Capitol, no matter how finely it’s been prepared, becomes disgusting. Repulsive when it is combined with the thought of the districts, his people, still starving and fighting one another for the Capitol’s ‘scraps’. One plate is enough for Patrick to feel the bile swish in his stomach and even crawl back up his throat– how is he supposed to enjoy this filth now?

(But of course the Capitol has a way of perverting everything. Who else would have invented a liquid that makes one vomit what was just digested to make room for more food?)

“You didn’t have to,” is the first set of words to come out of his mouth, however. It’s such a childish gesture on her part; as a victor, she and her family should have more than enough riches to cover for food whether she’s in the Capitol or her own district. That and it’s considered normal to take leftovers from these banquets.

And yet, she’s staring him down like they are in covenance– it’s odd…strange how the things the Capitol deem sacred, she’ll approach with the irreverence of a foreigner and yet with the most mundane of objects, like a loaf of bread, most likely one of the hundred baked today and will be replicated tomorrow, like it is worth the weight of gold. He takes a hold of María’s loot. The loaf is still warm, freshly out of the oven, he wants to believe. Like it came from one of the bakeries in say, District 12, rather than a Capitol banquet table. Does she look at the Capitol and its elaborate feasts the same way? District Eight is probably just as bad if not even worse than his own district when it comes to food shortages so maybe her thievery makes sense.

When one has gone without food for long enough, no amount of surplus is enough to satiate the insecurity. He knows that feeling all too well. His stomach growls in anticipation. “…Normally, the Capitol likes to have this with caviar.” A delicacy from District Four along with butter shipped from District Ten. He splits the loaf in two, the inside crackling and breaking into two crisp pieces. “But I think…I think it tastes just as delicious on its own.” He hands María one half while taking a bite out of the other. “Take the other half; I can’t finish it on my own.”

It tastes delicious.

Do you think Maria likes animals? What would she have as a pet? or do you think she'd see pet's as unnecessary?

I think María loves animals!! Perhaps I am projecting? Maybe, but I can still see this for her as I have a headcanon/au (which kinda defies some canon lol) surrounding this exact idea which I’ll share later! :D

So yeah I definitely see her having a big/beefy pit as a pet but I can also see her owning a horse as well. Pretty common animals but I’m sure they are what she is used to seeing/growing up around. I think she definitely sees them as necessary and very important as they are not only loveable companions but also can be very protective. She would love animals and, as a human, they loved her. I remember talking about this in another ask but I think she loved the animals and would go to them because they were kind and gentle when other people were not. She understood them and everything that came with them, including their instincts and their sometimes violent/protective nature. Once she’s a vampire she is quite saddened to learn that animals are afraid of her and she vows to try and befriend at least one animal, to have at least one animal become a bit more comfortable around her to show, and see for herself that it is possible. She’s determined like that; what a cutie lol.

Anyways, on to the headcanon:

María totally has a big beefy pit bull that she met one night out on the town hunting. He was a stray that had been kicked to the curb after losing its first dog fight. It was injured and bleeding and Maria felt for the doggy. She related to the doggy and so she took the doggy and at first the dog was super afraid and on guard, it even bit her, but once it realized that María wasn’t going to hurt it, it became soft and allowed her to tend to its wounds. María realized the dog was quite strong as it’s left a mark on her hand that would soon scar, she’s like “I guess you marked me bud, now we’re friends?” She gives the dog a bath and sees the dog crying and her lips trembles because she cannot cry herself and she’s like “It’s okay bud, I cried too when someone showed be the least bit of kindness after years of being hated and hurt..” after the dog is healed she expects it to leave and be on its way but it sticks around and starts following her everywhere she goes. At one point she looks back like “Don’t you have somewhere to be big bud?” and to her surprise the dog literally shakes it’s head as if it was saying “no”. Lol she is shocked. She’s like “You’re a smart thing aren’t you?” She tests his skills by giving him commands that he follows impeccably she goes “Hmm.. you seem very well trained.. but perhaps I can teach you some new things, would ya like that?!” The dog wags it’s tail and Maria holds her hand out like “put er there partner.” and the dog lays his paw against her hand thus melting her insides. 

María spends some time teaching the dog some tricks, showing him her language and how he should respond to it, she cooks nice steaks for him when he does well and scolds him a bit when he does something bad or does/eats something that may hurt him but she totally caves when he hangs his head in shame with his ears pulled back.

One day María had ended up in a fight with an enemy near her territory and the dog came running and attacked the vamp. María screamed at him to stop because she thought the dog would have no chance against her vampire attacker but to her surprise, as the vampire threw the dog off of him the dog ended up detaching the vampires hand at the wrist. María nudges the dog out of the way and kills her attacker before taking the dog back and checking him for any injuries. “You’ve got some strong teeth there buddy. How’d you do that?” the dog just nuzzles her and she smiles and thanks him for saving her. She’s like “How’s bout I teach you a little something about fighting vampires?” She totally teaches him how to evade their arms and dodge their attacks (which reminds me a lot of my dog since we can never catch him lol xD) she teaches him how to go for the jugular and other vampire weak spots, she teaches him how to jump high and run up/jump over obstacles. She teaches him how to to use his nails/claws to their fullest. She teaches him how to be crafty and stealthy and he’s already smart so she’s totally taking it to a new level. This dog has basically become that Presa Canario dog x10 from that movie Bullet Head under her lmfaoo, or even Cujo lmfaoo xD. He becomes a really formidable opponent and they become super close. María loves that dog more than anything and vice versa. It gets soo happy when she comes back from wherever she’s been. It’s always just jumping over her and wagging his tail and he even knocks her down sometimes because shes so tiny but she never minds. She loves throwing little treats in the air and watching him jump for it. She loves playing catch and throwing Frisbee’s. She even loves it when he begs for things and gives her those puppy eyes 🥺 lol.

After some time she’s turns to him like “Ya know, I never named you.. and I never saw any kind of collar for a name either.. How’s bout I call you… Malévolo :)”
