William Foster Hayes III (June 5, 1925 – January 12, 2024) Actor and recording artist. His song "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" hit the top of the Billboard charts in the spring of 1955.
Following a successful career as a musician which began in the late 1940s, Hayes began to focus on dramatic acting parts in the late 1960s, which led him to be cast in a role that gained him additional fame to a younger generation. This new chapter began in 1970 when he originated the character of Doug Williams on NBC's Days of Our Lives, which he continued to play until 2023.
Hayes was a singer on the Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca variety show Your Show of Shows in the early 1950s. During the Davy Crockett craze in 1955, three recorded versions of the Ballad of Davy Crockett were in the top 30. Hayes' version was the most popular: It was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, sold over two million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
On Days of Our Lives, Hayes was introduced as a convict who was also a lounge singer.
The character of Doug returned in 1986 and 1987 as well as 1993 and 1996. Later, he was on the show from 1999 onwards. His character was killed off in the spring of 2004 by Dr. Marlena Evans. In an elaborate plot hatched by head writer James E. Reilly, Doug turned up alive on a tropical island and went home to his wife. (Wikipedia)

[ID: the xkcd comic "Average Familiarity." It has been edited to read "Davy Crockett and Annie Oakley lore is second nature to us two siblings, so it's easy to forget that the average person probably only knows she was in Buffalo Bill's show and one or two things about the Alamo." "And the song, of course." "Of course." Captioned: Even when they're trying to compensate for it, children of experts in anything wildly overestimate the average person's familiarity with their parent's hobby. End ID.]

Year-End Poll #6: 1955
Tumblr media
The sound of a decade does not change the minute the ball drops on New Year's Eve. With the benefit of hindsight, it's easier to form these cultural shifts into a narrative, even when said shifts aren't always obvious. 1955 offers us the music we've grown accustomed to over the course of this decade: traditional pop, vocal quartets, jazz standards. However, this year also gives me an opportunity to highlight some different genres that will come to shape the decade in the years to come.
The post-war 1950s saw a boom in popularity when it came to music from South and Central America. We saw this before with the inclusion of other Spanish language songs reaching the Top 30, but artists like Pérez Prado and later Ritchie Valens helped to popularize Latin music in the States. Pérez Prado is, of course, known for popularizing mambo, a Cuban genre of dance music, by incorporating big band influence. The Prado song featured on this poll is not mambo, but rather one of its descendants, cha-cha.
In 1955 year-end chart, we're seeing the first traces of a genre of music that will help define the decade's sound: rock and roll. With the inclusion of Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock, we're seeing the first rock and roll song to top the Billboard charts. Obviously, rock and roll has existed long before Bill Haley and Pat Boone reached the top 10. Unfortunately, like many other historically Black genres, white faces typically sold better with mainstream audiences. Is this the last we'll see of record executives using white performers to market Black music to white audiences?
Foreshadowing is a literary device--

Giorgio Gaber || La ballata del Cerutti (The Ballad of Cerutti) || Italian lyrics + English translation
A parody of the famous Northamerican ballads, this very Milanese hit from the Sixties details the ordinary (mis)adventures of everyman Gino Cerutti -- or, as the narrator quite bureaucratically states, "Cerutti Gino" -- a twenty-year-old from Milan and something of a minor celebrity at the neighborhood bar, where he spends most of his days loafing about. That is, until he tries to nick somebody's scooter -- and immediately gets busted by the cops in the process.
Io ho sentito molte ballate Me, I've heard a lot of ballads Quella di Tom Dooley, quella di Davy Crockett The ballad of Tom Dooley, the ballad of Davy Crockett E sarebbe piaciuto anche a me scriverne una così And I would've liked to write one of those myself Invece… invece niente, ho fatto una ballata Instead… instead, no dice, I wrote a ballad Per uno che sta a Milano, al Giambellino¹ For this guy in Milan, he lives in Giambellino Il Cerutti, Cerutti Gino A fellow called Cerutti, Cerutti Gino
Il suo nome era Cerutti Gino His name was Cerutti Gino Ma lo chiamavan Drago But he was known as Dragon Gli amici al bar del Giambellino His friends down at the bar in Giambellino Dicevan che era un mago (era un mago) Would say he was a wizard (was a wizard)
Vent'anni, biondo, mai una lira Twenty years old, blond hair, not a dime on him, Per non passare guai To avoid getting in trouble Fiutava intorno che aria tira He'd sniff around, see which way the wind blew E non sgobbava mai And never worked a second
Una sera, in una strada scura One night, in a dark street Occhio, c'è una lambretta² Look, there's a Lambretta scooter Fingendo di non aver paura Pretending not to be afraid Il Cerutti monta in fretta Cerutti quickly hops on
Ma che rogna nera quella sera Tough luck that night, though Qualcuno vede e chiama Someone sees and calls Veloce arriva la pantera³ The patrol car comes quick E lo beve⁴ la madama⁵ He gets busted by the cops
Ora è triste e un poco manomesso He's sad now, and a little damaged Si trova al terzo raggio⁶ Staying on the third row È lì che attende il suo processo He's there, waiting for his trial Forse vien fuori a Maggio He might get out in May
S'è beccato un bel tre mesi il Gino Got himself a good three months, ol' Gino Ma il giudice è stato buono But the judge was kind Gli ha fatto un lungo fervorino He lectured him long and good È uscito col condono And let him out with a pardon
È tornato al bar Cerutti Gino He's back at the bar, Cerutti Gino, E gli amici nel futuro And his friends, in the future, Quando parleran del Gino Whenever they talk about Gino Diranno che è un tipo duro They'll say that he's a tough guy
Notes
1) Giambellino is a neighborhood in Milan, born as a working-class area in the first half of the 20th century. 2) Lambretta was a famous 1950s Italian scooter. 3) Literally "the panther" -- slang for police car. 4) "Bere" means "to drink", but when someone "drinks" somebody else, it means they bust them, catch them (and in this case arrest them); it's really mostly used when the police or some sort of authority is involved. 5) Literally "the madam" -- slang for "police"; not so common anymore (but it might be more used in the North). 6) A reference to San Vittore, a well-known prison in Milan, which is divided into rows.

This week's featured Disney hotel is the Disney Davy Crockett Ranch at Disneyland Paris. As someone who has mostly visited Walt Disney World, the Davy Crockett Ranch reminded me of the cabins you can find at Fort Wilderness. The entire "hotel" consists of a series of cabins in a wooded area that is a 15-minute drive from the park.
I decided to create an outfit inspired by the natural environment of the area and the character after which the resort is named. Although I couldn't find a top that looked exactly like the one worn by Davy Crockett, this Jil Sander top is pretty close in terms of color and relaxed fit.
For bottoms, I opted for a pair of jeans that are perfect for exploring the wooded areas of the property. Speaking of exploration, one needs comfortable and practical footwear to explore the area, so I selected these Bocage ankle boots.
To complete the outfit, I added a brown handbag that is perfect for carrying anything you might need while walking around the woods or parks. I also included a taupe hair elastic to make a ponytail, taking the place of Crockett's famous raccoon hat. Finally, the earrings provide a small reference to the lyrics of the Ballad of Davy Crockett, where it is stated that he was born in the "greenest state in the land of the free.”
Overall, this outfit is a great way to enjoy the natural surroundings of the hotel while also paying homage to the character after which the resort is named. With comfortable yet stylish clothing and practical accessories, this outfit is perfect for exploring the wooded areas and enjoying the parks.

Back to the Future (USA, 1985): 🐐 [2011]
Duas músicas do filme ficaram de fora da trilha sonora: “Mr. Sandman” (The Four Aces) e “The Ballad of Davy Crockett”.
