The Future of Machine Tool Finance

The machine tool industry is known for its pattern of ups and downs over the last 20 years or so. Experts all point to different factors that affect the market and the financing of new machine tools however recent reporting suggests that the two primary causes could be the near-zero interest rates taking a toll on American businesses and China’s increasing demand for new machine tools for its manufacturing sector.

Recent Down Periods

Recently between the years of 2014 and 2015, the market was in a down period. Research company IndexBox found that between these two years, the total value of U.S. machine tool production lost 4.5% of total value. This may seem like troubling news, but experts were quite used to these assessments from years prior. The good news? 2017 boasted a net positive increase in machine tool consumption in 2017.

2017’s Numbers

Statista, a reputable industry research firm reported that 2017 saw the first positive increase in machine tool consumption since 2014 with 2017 boosted by 1.6%. The great news for the future is that the expert analysts in their firm predict that 2018 and the years following will see the same positive increase in U.S. consumption as well.

2017 saw big players in the machine tool finance world netting valuable sales and buyers purchasing more machine tools as well. EDA reported that the 20 biggest lenders for November 2017 boasting 481 new financial filings related to machine tools.

These are the top five in the market for that month, all totaling 42.6% of the units sold for the month: CNC ASSC INC                           72 BANTERRA BANK                     39 DMG MORI SEIKI USA              32 ELLISON TECH                           32 HARTWIG INC                            30

The top mover, CNC Associates, made up 15% of the total sales for the month making them a prominent leader for the year and possibly for the years to come.

These top lenders sold to businesses representing a variety of industries all needing machine tools to get their job done to produce exceptional products for their customers. EDA published the full list in their report, but the five biggest buyers were the following companies.

Kennametal, a supplier of industrial tools and metalworking equipment, purchased the most machine tools for the month with 16 units. The market is definitely headed in the right direction entering 2018 but we will have to wait and see if the analyst predictions hold up.

The good news is with a change in the administration in Washington and new tax breaks creating a corporate-friendly economic environment; there is a strong possibility that we could see a boost in U.S.-based manufacturing jobs this year.

Just last October, industry research firm AMT found that machine tool orders were up by 7.6% over sales in October of 2016. As the years before 2016 were a bit dismal, momentum like that heading into the new year is a welcome sign for investors, financiers, and buyers alike for the future health of the machine tool industry.
