so you wanna write a heartbreak high fic, but you're american (part 2)
Back in November, I wrote this after reading a bunch of Heartbreak High fics. I always planned to write a part 2 featuring some more aspects of Australian schooling, but my own writing, work and personal things (aka mental illness) got in the way.
As with part 1, this is NSW/Sydney specific, as that's where I'm from and where Heartbreak High is filmed and set. People from other states might have different experiences (I know a little bit about Queensland for example, because my parents are from there and most of my relatives went to school there).
If there's anything not covered here that you're curious about, please check part 1 as I may have covered it there, or send a reply.
Extracurricular activities: these are not timetabled during lesson times (some schools have things like Friday afternoon rewards but those don't really count). They're generally just for fun and a way for kids to socialise. What extracurricular activities are available depends on what the teachers at the school are able to run but aside from competitive and social sport, these are things like debating, mock trial (fake court cases, highly recommend, very fun), music ensembles like choir/jazz band/orchestra, then there are some academic things like Tournament of Minds, coding, streamwatch. The more academic activities are generally more selective, especially if there's a competition aspect like ToM. Extracurricular activities have absolutely no bearing on whether or not a kid will get into uni, although depending on what they are, they can be good to put on a CV for jobs. There are also no limits on how many extracurricular activities a student can do (there's no "oh he chose basketball instead of orchestra as his extracurricular" ... he can do both, they're also usually not running at the same time). Sydney schools tend to run more activities than regional/rural schools because the public transport system means that it's easy to get to and from places outside of school hours. Non-metropolitan schools tend to run things during recess/lunchtime so there's a limit on how many things kids can do.
Sport: most Australian kids participate in some form of sport. The most common ones are: soccer, cricket, netball, rugby league, AFL, touch football, athletics, swimming, basketball and tennis. Private schools often offer things like golf, rugby union and sometimes even skiing, rowing and equestrian. Hartley High has a group of cheerleaders and, like with the uniform thing, this is extremely rare. Cheerleading is a thing in Australia, but it mostly happens through clubs, kind of like gymnastics. It's more common for girls here to just be involved in a more conventional sport instead (usually netball, which, in my opinion, is the most boring sport in the history of the universe, but is pretty popular in Australian schools; league tag is also extremely popular in more regional areas). Depending on how big the school is, Aussie kids who play sport either get involved with school teams or local club teams, and they tend to range from more social/fun to more competitive, particularly as kids transition from the juniors into the older age groups. Some schools might not necessarily have school teams but will scrounge up a representative team for inter-school competitions (so this would be like if the inter-school basketball competition team wasn't necessarily the school basketball team but was just made up of the best 10-12 basketball players that tried out or signed up). Other schools have more competitive teams that compete against other schools. Schools in NSW have to do a mandatory amount of hours of physical activity, so some schools will let kids choose a sport for a certain amount of time to do during that time (this might be when the competitive teams compete). Club sports generally happen on Saturdays and Sundays (for me, AFL was Saturday, soccer was Sunday, rowing was Saturday morning if we didn't have a regatta that week). Kids who excel at a particular sport might get to participate in NSW combined high schools (CHS). Some of the more "prestigious" schools are part of athletic associations like GPS and CAS. In terms of post-school, I know very little about how it works, but all I know is that it's nothing like any of the American systems. We don't have a system like the NCAA here; I know a little about the AFL draft but it's too complicated to explain so here's a Wikipedia article about it (I know nothing about how NRL players go pro so don't ask me that). An Australian kid might attract a scholarship to an American university to play sport overseas, but our universities don't work like that.
Student leadership: Generally, all schools have one or two School Captains and one or two Vice Captains (some schools let the whole school vote for captains, but usually they limit it to teachers and the older grades). Then there are House Captains (kind of like the prefects from the transphobic lady's book), and they're usually elected by all the students in that house. They're involved in inter-house competitions which I'll touch on later. Some schools have captains for things like different extracurricular activities. Schools generally have a student representative council with one or more elected representatives from each grade, depending on how big the school is. My school was a Catholic school, so I got to be a Liturgy Representative (and I absolutely put that on my CV when I applied for my first shitty bakery job).
Carnivals: pretty much every Aussie school has a swimming carnival and an athletics carnival. This is where there's a bunch of races (and field events for athletics) and you participate in as many as possible to get house points. Sometimes swimming is only open to more competitive students but generally more people participate in athletics. Most Australian kids have swimming lessons as part of mandatory PE in primary school and in years 7-10 (I got my bronze medallion as part of mine and I'm now a member of my local surf lifesavers group). The house captains rile up their houses and get them to sing war cries to cheer everyone on (my personal favourite was 'how funky is your chicken'). The winning house gets ultimate bragging rights and is pretty much always the red house (they tend to put all the sporty kids in red and the dweeby nerdy kids in yellow for some reason). You get house points for going in events, but you also get them for cheering the loudest or having the cleanest area. Really, it's just a fun way of getting out of classes.

Tik tok is weird sometimes. I haven't been very active there lately, but my videos from last Christmas are seeing a resurgence. This happens every year but this year, the main one people are seeing again is a video where I said that it's hard to listen to the Aussie Christmas song "six white boomers" without giggling now ("boomer" is the old name for a male kangaroo. The song says Santa uses 6 white, flying kangaroos to pull his sleigh over Australia because it's too hot for the reindeer).
Someone in the comments, a year ago, said the funny thing is that female kangaroos used to be called flyers and I answered back (again, a year ago) that that sounds like a missed opportunity. This morning, I got an angry reply to that comment from someone else telling me not to disrespect our basketball team (the national men's team is called the boomers).
I didn't even mention basketball lmao. I admittedly took the bait and asked what they were talking about. Is it wrong a part of me kind of hopes they'll continue on saying "you have no respect for athletes" so I have an excuse to dig up my old Gliders (Women's paralympc basketball team) uniform and national/world championship medals lmao

Exploring Different Types of Medals and Ribbons: A Comprehensive Guide
Medals and ribbons are often used as a form of recognition and honour. You would see them in annual day events at schools and colleges when students are awarded medals for their academic and extra-curricular achievements. Sometimes these medals are hanging from a ribbon worn around the neck.
Tumblr media
At other times, the ribbon alone could serve as a recognition of the special status of the individual who is wearing it. For example, ribbons are used by military personnel on their uniform daily while medals are worn on special occasions. In the corporate world, both medals and ribbons are used to recognise and honour extraordinary achievements.
When it comes to buying cheap medals or ribbons in Australia, where do you go? You may not find many reputable stores where high-quality medals and ribbons can be found at cost-effective prices. However, it’s not that you will not find such stores at all; although very few, they exist nevertheless.
For example, you would like to consider buying medals and ribbons at Olympia Trophies Corporate which provides corporate awards, trophies, medals, plaques, badges, cups, specialist services, and corporate gifts. You can buy medals and other award items online and get them delivered to your doorsteps across Australia.
In this post, we will discuss different types of medals and ribbons used in corporate and other award functions.
Types of Medals
A small piece of round metal or some other material such as crystal can symbolize success and achievement. It’s very common to see people awarded with first–, second-, or third-place medals. Here is a brief rundown of different kinds of medals you can find.
Academic Medals
The academic world sees a large number of medals given to students and sometimes even to teachers regularly. Academic medals come in myriad varieties to fit every situation worth recognition and honour. You can expect academic medals for excellence in arts, computers, drama, graduation, music, science, maths, perfect attendance, and more.
General Medals
This kind of medals can be used for any event as they don’t bear the name of any event or the reason for which it is being given, making them suitable for just any event. However, you can find a variety of medals in different materials and sizes. For example, you can expect acrylic medal buttons, 50 mm medals, 70 mm medals, etc.
Sports Medals
Australia is a sports-loving country and corporates love these events as they induce a competitive team spirit among employees and associates. You can find sports medals for virtually all games athletics, basketball, cricket, dance, karate, netball, rugby, soccer, swimming, and more. Medals for team events and tournaments can also be found.
Stained Glass Medals
When you want to go for colourful medals that boast creativity and skilled craftsmanship, stained glass medals are an option. Typically, it will come with a ribbon and be placed in a presentation box. As they are created with care and patience, you can get a name and message engraved. You can find stained glass medals for sporting, academic, and even corporate award functions.
Star Medals
Medals in a star shape or round medals with one or multiple star insignia are very popular. You can find these star medals in different materials including gold, silver, bronze, and acrylic. You can get a name, a logo, an image, or a message engraved or placed on the medal. Star medals in 50 mm size are quite popular. However, you can find other sizes too.
Everything You Wanted to Know about Ribbons
The world of ribbons is no less prolific. You can find a large variety of ribbons to suit any award functions and other events. They bring colours and elegance to the occasion a sense of pride and recognition to the wearer. Ribbons are strips of fabric worn around the neck or attached to a uniform. They can be customized to align with the specific events.
However, ribbons have use cases beyond the winners’ circles. For example, the circular clusters of ribbon loops called Rosettes are used widely to recognise volunteers or community members at an event. Ribbons are often used for tying gift boxes to elevate their beauty. They are also used to embellish garlands, bouquets and floral arrangements. Another use case for ribbons is using them in invitations and stationery items to enhance their appeal and elegance.
Now, let’s have a look at ribbon materials. When it comes to choosing a ribbon material, a wide assortment of options are available, each giving a distinct look and feel. Here is a list of some commonly used ribbon materials.
Satin Ribbons: It offers a luxurious and silky feel that goes well with formal occasions and gift wrapping.
Organza Ribbons: It’s made with silk, polyester or nylon fabric and offers an ethereal touch.
Grosgrain Ribbons: It’s heavy silk or nylon fabric woven using the heavy weft technique and offers a sophisticated look.
Velvet Ribbons: They offer a classic and elegant feel and look rich and luxurious.
Burlap Ribbons: Its fabric is made with vegetable fibres that offer a natural rustic and eco-friendly look.
Now, let’s explore different types of ribbons that you can find in a medals and ribbons shop.
Neck Ribbons
Medals are typically worn with the help of neck ribbons as they proudly occupy the centre of the wearers’ chest. Corporations often choose brand colours to keep uniformity in promotional materials. Using neck ribbons with the same colours as in your brand can give the ribbons added importance.
Here are some common neck ribbon combinations: Black Neck Ribbon, Black/Green Striped Neck Ribbon, Black/Red Striped Neck Ribbon, Black/White Striped Neck Ribbon, Black/Yellow Striped Neck Ribbon, Black/Yellow/Red Striped Neck Ribbon, Blue Neck Ribbon, Blue/White Striped Neck Ribbon, Blue/Yellow Striped Neck Ribbon, Dark Blue/White Striped Neck Ribbon, Green/Blue Striped Neck Ribbon, Green/White Striped Neck Ribbon, etc. You can find many more colours. You can even ask for customized ribbons to match your brand colours.
Place Ribbons
These are fabric strips that speak about your place or achievement in a contest. For example, you can find Achievement Award Ribbons, Competitor Award Ribbons, Fifth Place Award Ribbons, First Place Award Ribbons, Fourth Place Award Ribbons, Good Performance Award Ribbons, Good Try Award Ribbons, Highly Commended Award Ribbons, Merit Award Ribbons, Participant Award Ribbon, Runner Up Award Ribbon, Second Place Award Ribbon, Sixth Place Award Ribbon, Special Award Ribbon, Third Place Award Ribbon, Top Effort Award Ribbon, etc.
Take Away
Medals are ribbons are widely used in corporate and academic award functions. Medals mostly represent success and achievement while ribbons are used to add colour and vivacity to such events. They can be used to wear the medals, tie the wrappings of gift boxes, decorate garlands and boutiques, and embellish decorations and clothing. If you plan to buy medals or are looking for cheap sports trophies melbourne, you should look for them online. Especially, Olympia is a reputable corporate awards and trophies store, offering both online and in-store services.

Over the years, Cody Clements, a marine ecologist at Georgia Tech, has planted over 10,000 coral fragments across the South Pacific.
"You can just break off a branch from a coral, plant it into the sandy bottom, and it will grow into a whole new coral," explains Clements. "I have corals out there that I've planted and they were the size of my pinky — and now they're the size of a basketball."
As he was gearing up for an experiment in 2018 in French Polynesia off the island of Mo'orea, something caught his attention. It had to do with sea cucumbers — marine invertebrates that are distantly related to starfish but resemble soft pickles.
"They come in various shapes, colors and sizes," says Clements. "Some of them are very large." They're slow-moving scavengers, and collectively they hoover up truckloads of sand to feed on algae, microbes, and organic matter. (On a single seven-square-mile reef in Queensland, Australia, researchers previously found that the sea cucumbers there are processing the equivalent of more than five Eiffel Towers of sand each year.)
At the reef in Mo'orea that Clements was studying, there were quite a few sea cucumbers. Clements decided to clear them all from his study site to make things uniform for the experiment.
But a few days later, "I started seeing that the corals were starting to die from the base up," Clements says. "And I was just like, 'OK, this is pretty abnormal.'"
Clements wondered whether relocating the sea cucumbers had had something to do with it. And in new research published in Nature Communications, he and his colleagues demonstrate that when they removed sea cucumbers from a study patch, tissue death of Acropora pulchra, a species of staghorn coral, more than tripled. And mortality of the whole colony surged 15 times.
The reasoning, says Clements, is that sea cucumbers are like "these little vacuum cleaners on the reef that are cleaning things up," digesting and eliminating microbes that can lead to coral disease and demise — threats that are exacerbated by a warming and increasingly polluted ocean.
A hunch and a museum etching
Back in 2018, when Clements first suspected that clearing out the sea cucumbers may have triggered the mortality of the corals, he rang up his supervisor at the time — Georgia Tech marine ecologist Mark Hay.
Hay recalled an etching he'd seen years earlier in the Fiji Museum depicting an old sailing vessel transporting perhaps hundreds of tons of dried sea cucumbers. It's an amount nowhere near what he's observed in the modern ocean where these squishy animals have been harvested as a delicacy to near oblivion.
"And so they must have been super abundant at one time," says Hay. "And so we had wanted to [ask], 'OK, if there were that many of them, what were they doing? And what's their real role in the world?'"
With so few sea cucumbers in most places, however, there'd been no way to answer these questions. But off the island of Mo'orea where Clements was working, there were a few bays with enough of the critters to run a simple experiment.
This was the approach: The team would identify natural patches where sea cucumbers hung out. In some, they'd remove the resident sea cukes. In others, they'd leave them alone. In both, they'd plant corals and then watch what happened.
The question they were hoping to answer about coral health was this, says Clements: "Are they more likely to get sick when we've taken the cucumbers out?"
And so the study plan was hatched.
A rough and bloody start
In early 2022, Cody Clements was three hours into his field season. He was examining a large coral colony when a searing pain tore through his right hand. Clements looked down to find a giant moray eel had bit down and wasn't letting go. Instead, it was thrashing.
It all happened so fast, Clements recalls. And before he knew it, the eel — uncharacteristically — let him go. Clements thought he might bleed out, but fortunately he made it back to his boat and then to shore. The local hospital patched him up the best they could, but ultimately he went to Tahiti where a top-notch hand surgeon managed to reattach his thumb.
"He did a really great job! I mean, compared to what it looked like the day of," says Clements.
Ten weeks later, he was back in the water to begin his experiments anew. The rest of the field work went off without a hitch, and the results left no doubt. Wherever sea cucumbers were removed, there was "15-fold more death" of the whole corals, says Hay.
They ran a similar experiment in Palmyra Atoll — a small island about a thousand miles south of Hawaii with what Hay calls "no permanent human population."
"You have to get special permission to go within 50 miles of it," he said.
The reefs of Palmyra differed from Mo'orea in important ways — they're more isolated and therefore more intact.
"I remember getting in the water at this site that's called Crazy Corals," says Clements. "I literally gasped. I was like, 'Oh my god. I've never seen corals like this.'" Some were as large as buildings. Clements was immersed in a pageant of underwater life. "There aren't many places like that left in the world."
Clements and Hay found a similar result, though less pronounced, among the corals in Palmyra Atoll. "Part of the difference is that our time on Palmyra was limited," says Hay, "and the experiment did not run for as long." And of course, the Palmyra corals as a whole seemed to be in much better health.
Still, tissue mortality more than doubled without the sea cucumbers.
A slow-burning fuse
Hay thinks the reason for the increased mortality at both the Mo'orea and Palmyra reefs may be related to the vast volume of sand that sea cucumbers process.
"We think of these sea cucumbers as little Roombas that run around and take sand in," says Hay. "They digest microbes out of it. And so the waste that would otherwise accumulate on the bottom — it's not being left there to heat up and grow microbes, many of which could be pathogenic."
The idea is that fewer microbes mean less disease, which translates into healthier coral. But ocean warming and pollution encourage more microbes and more disease, especially as sea cucumbers have been overexploited.
Hay likens it to a slow-burning fuse that we lit 100 to 200 years ago when the massive harvests of sea cucumbers were well underway. What we may have been doing for decades, he argues, is removing these pudgy custodians of the reef at the same time we've introduced a barrage of other threats. "And all of a sudden," he says, "it's blowing up on us. We've lost huge amounts of corals in the last several decades."
"I have children that are in their mid to late 30's," Hay says. "I can't show them [a reef] anywhere in the Caribbean like when they were born."
Hay says a considerable amount of the global loss of corals is due to disease. The role that sea cucumbers play in suppressing coral mortality has been "just a missed part of the ecosystem that we didn't understand was important," he argues.
Kaylie Pascoe, a coral reef biologist currently in a PhD program at the University of Arizona, said the design of the study was elegant.
"We know sea cucumbers are the filters of the sea," says Pascoe, who wasn't involved in the study. "But putting the two together — looking at coal disease and sea cucumber abundance — I thought was really unique."
Pascoe appreciated that corals were planted for these experiments, but she'd like to know the impact that sea cucumbers have on corals growing naturally. Still, she says the research brings to mind a possible solution — the Hawaiian custom of "Kapu," which basically means a no-harvest time.
"Maybe that sort of practice could be applied to sea cucumbers," she says, to allow them to grow back and do their job — "filtering sand and microbes and bacteria for the coral's health, creating the habitat for all the marine organisms."
It's an idea that resonates for Cody Clements, especially for Holothuria atra, the particular species of sea cucumber that he examined in this study, which he and his colleagues argue has little economic value on its own.
"Sea cucumbers provide an extra level of insurance against the things that are causing coral decline," says Clements. "Doesn't mean it's gonna fix everything, but we want to give them as much of a fighting chance as we can."

Safeguard Your Game with Basketball Knee Pads Online
Basketball is a high-impact sport that demands agility, speed, and precision. As players dash across the court, pivot, jump, and collide with opponents, their knees take a considerable amount of strain. To protect your knees from potential injuries, investing in basketball knee pads is essential. And what better way to find the perfect pair than by exploring the options available online? In this article, we'll delve into the world of basketball knee pads online, discussing the importance of these protective gears and offering tips on how to choose the best one for your needs.
Basketball knee pads are designed with one primary goal in mind: safeguarding your knees. These pads are made from a combination of materials like foam, elastic fabric, and sometimes even gel inserts. They provide cushioning to absorb impact forces, reduce the risk of abrasions, and minimize the strain on your knee joints during intense basketball games.
One of the key advantages of shopping for Basketball Knee Pads Online Australia is the convenience it offers. No longer do you need to visit physical stores and sift through limited options. Instead, you can explore a wide range of brands, styles, and sizes from the comfort of your own home. 2. Material: Different knee pads are made from different materials. Neoprene and foam are common materials used in knee pad construction. Neoprene offers good flexibility and moisture-wicking properties, while foam provides excellent shock absorption. Choose the material that suits your preferences and requirements.
3. Style: Knee pad styles vary, including sleeve-style, wraparound, and slip-on designs. Each style offers unique benefits, so choose the one that provides the most comfortable fit and support for your game.
4. Brand and Reviews: Explore reputable brands and read customer reviews to gain insights into the quality and durability of the knee pads you're considering. Customer feedback can be invaluable in making an informed decision.
5. Budget: Set a budget and stick to it. Online shopping allows you to compare prices easily, ensuring that you get the best value for your money.
Once you've purchased your basketball knee pads online, it's important to understand how to maintain them. Regularly cleaning and inspecting your knee pads will help extend their lifespan and ensure they continue to provide the protection you need. Follow the care instructions provided by the manufacturer, and avoid tossing them in the washing machine as it can damage the pads.
Basketball knee pads online come in a variety of designs and colors, allowing you to choose a pair that complements your basketball uniform or personal style. Style And Performance: Top Trends of Custom Sportswear
Customization is something that is stitched or manufactured specially for you considering your specific needs and preferences. Today's athletes and teams are seeking a blend of style, performance, and individuality in their apparel. Sports uniforms do more than just look good; they help athletes perform better. Advanced fabrics that keep sweat away, let air through, and are light are really popular. Athletes want clothes that feel good and last long so they can play their best. Nowadays sublimation printing has changed how we make custom sportswear. This method can print lots of colours all over the clothes, making designs that blend into the fabric. It gives endless design options and makes prints that won't fade or peel.
Whether you are looking for cricket, badminton, softball, or basketball uniforms in Australia, or any other sports, they manufactures apparel that fits every category. From high-tech fabrics to cool designs and a focus on the environment, customization is making a new kind of athletic wear that's not just for playing, but also for caring about the world. Sexualization of Female Athletes
Many female athletes’ femininity is questioned in sports. A lot of news medias separate female athletes into certain categories based on the type of sport they play. There are feminine and masculine sports that a woman can play. The traditionally masculine sports are more played by women but the feminine sports like gymnastics and cheerleading have more coverage and are more sexualized. On Halloween you will see sexy cheerleader, not sexy basketball player. The interest in the more masculine sports in which women “fight, sweat, and play like men” has less interest (Harvard Law Review, 1977). The best example is cheerleading. Many communities fought and still fight to recognize cheer as a sport. Since cheerleading is a traditionally feminine sport, many find it hard to this sport as athletic but also strong just because it is mostly an all-girl sport. It is difficult for spectators to take women’s sports seriously, especially the more ‘masculine’ ones, when the uniforms are marketed more to look at women’s bodies than the sport being played. This is just another way that organizations have failed women in equality. An example from CBC Radio says, “Australia’s women’s basketball team where female- not male players- were forced by their own federation to wear skin-tight, swimsuit-style uniforms” (CBC Radio, 2021). As seen in the photo, these uniforms are not like the opposing teams. Kavitha Davidson, a Sportswriter, claims that some of the officials admitted that the uniforms were on purpose to make the players “as sexually marketable as possible” (CBC Radio, 2021). This is not the only instance, there are athletes that have to wear shorter shorts like for running, the shorts can be compared to bathing suit bottoms. In 2012, the International Boxing Association wanted the female boxers to wear skirts, some countries even made the switch mandatory for the Olympics (CBC Radio, 2021). Though there is, and has been push back from female athletes, this is still seen today. Norway’s beach handball team protested their uniforms by wearing shorts instead of the provided and mandatory bikini bottoms which are very revealing. German’s gymnastics team wore full length unitards, instead of the option we see all the time. This is just one of the things that make female sports problematic. Another factor that ties in is the fact that women’s bodies are criticized more than men’s bodies and if women are forced to wear more revealing uniforms, then this is almost unavoidable. In the general public, 94% of young women had endured body shaming (Goal Five, 2022). This becomes a huge issue in sports when a percentage is that high. Body shaming can lead to unhealthy practices like eating disorders and mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Goal Five writes “female athletes can be 8.3 times more likely that females in the general population to suffer from anorexia, and 14.5 times more likely to suffer from bulimia”. The criticization of the female body when it is mandatory to show it off in female sports is a recipe for disaster. Physical appearance for a female athlete matters a lot more than it should. Research found that “45% of female athlete respondents had experienced sexual harassment”, again, with the mandatory uniforms being very sexual, this is part of the problem (Goal Five, 2022). Not to say that these uniforms are the cause of body shaming and sexual harassment, but they definitely don’t help the situation.
