Huntress Singer Jill Janus Dead at 43

Huntress frontwoman Jill Janus died Tuesday of suicide in Oregon, her bandmates announced Aug. 16 “with crushed hearts.”

Janus, who had long struggled with mental-health problems, including depression, was 43.

“Beyond her accomplishments in the music world and her advocacy for mental-health issues, she was a beautiful person passionate about her family, animal rescue and the world of natural medicine,” the band said. “She will be missed more than she could have ever known.”

Huntress released three albums between 2012 and 2015 and played alongside bands such as Battlecross, who remembered “many of great times on the road with Huntress” and mourned Janus in a Facebook post.

“She was an amazing vocalist and person,” the band wrote. “Our condolences to her family, friends and fans.”

Alice Cooper guitarist Lita Strauss played with Janus in the cover band the Starbreakers and recalled their journey to sobriety, Janus’ five-octave vocal range and her frankness in discussing her mental-health status.

“Thinking of my friend alone somewhere in a dark-enough place to take her own life is more than I can fathom,” Strauss wrote on Facebook. “Sending all the strength and love in the world to her Huntress bandmates and loving boyfriend Blake. It was an honor to know your girl.”
