FINAL IMAGE AND DEVELOPMENT BREAKDOWN.

I was initially aiming on creating a few looks so that I had a chance to pick the best one and the one that worked the best with everyone else’s work. I ended up only creating one look.

FINAL IMAGE

Background

For this image I had to set up a white backdrop which I later had to extend in photoshop. I used a large flower bucket and covered it in this vibrant/tropical printed scarf that looked like one of (the photographers) Ruth Ossai’s images. I ended up using this as a seat in the picture.

With the background I played around with lighting in photoshop to create a blue and red effect like Caitlyn’s work so that all the images flowed. I tried combinations of yellow and blue, red and blue and also added in the heart symbol from the Romeo and Juliet 1996 poster but to me the background looked messy and made the image look tacky and not as clean as it was with just the plain white background.

STYLING DETAILS

I aimed to create a look that was a modern version of the Montague boys had the film been shot in 2021. I wanted to go with the vibe of ‘youthful rebellion’ and ‘mishape and chaos’ whilst representing the blue water and religious themes we discussed as a group.

Pants

For the pants I wore, oversized wide leg blue joggers. These joggers reminded me of the baggy workwear that was mentioned in the article I read regarding the styling in the movie, but they also reminded me of some of the pants used in the KENZO fall 2021 ready to wear collection, which I found in my research. I bought the joggers in blue to stick to the blue water theme we researched into.

Shoes

For footwear I wore Puma RS - X Tech trainers in grey and blue. The reason I went for trainers was because they are very youthful and easy. A lot of the looks in the Kenzo, Raf Simons and D&G collections had trainers underneath so I knew they would work with the baggy workwear and also the street style stylist research I did.

Skirt

Over the joggers I tied this knitted ribbed jumper in the blue and white tie dye effect to layer what looked like a skirt. I ended up sewing together the ends of the jumper so it looked like an actual overhanging skirt and tied the arms around my waist. The jumper had lighter blue shades and broke up the look in a cool way. Skirts in street style looks were used in my stylist research and I thought this was very youthful and rebellious. Skirts on men were also used in the Ludovic de Saint Sernin fall 2021 collection I found in my research and it just looked cool.

Shirt

Under the funnel neck blue jumper was a skinny velvet floral shirt in blue. The shirt reminded me of the floral heart symbol in the Romeo and Juliet poster. I wanted to add an extra element to the top half of the look so I had one arm of the funnel neck and one of the shirt. This sleeve layering was used in the Raf Simons fall 2021 menswear show I found in my research. It looked cool to layer the top half in this way so that the look was balanced, it added some print to the look, like the Hawaiian and floral baggy shirts the Montague boys wore.

Funnel neck jumper

On top of the shirt I wore this oversized blue funnel neck jumper and took one arm out so that the floral shirt could show on one side. Funnel neck jumpers were used in the Most recent Dolce and Gabbana, Raf Simons, Prada and Stella McCartney collections that I found in my research. A few of those collections were by the same Italian brands that were used in the movie. The funnel neck jumper made the image and look more expensive, looking but also made the picture look hot and tropical. This idea of winter layering but making it look warm and passionate also represented that rebellious style of the Montague boys.

Accessory’s

For accessory’s I wore these Orange, Motorbike/ workwear style viser glasses which I photoshopped white to match the look better. Workwear was used in the styling for the movie and these kinds of sunglasses can look very modern, sleek and futuristic. I also wore a curve design Pearl & cross choker which ended up being covered by the funnel neck in this particular image. Pearl jewellery was one of the most recent jewellery trends but the cross was also meant to symbolise the religious themes in the movie. Also in the look I wore a white organic cotton bandana which had a black paisley print. With a black round dangly earring. The headwear was aimed to represent the paintings of Mary in the movie but was also inspired by the jacquemus show, Ruth Ossai’s photography and the Vietnam, Verona beach, hyper tropical vibe I wanted to reflect in the image.

The image represented everything I wanted to it had this ‘youthful rebellion’ look and embodied what you would see from the modern Montague boys. The look had this passion filled designer Italian feel combined with current fashion trends and a tropical Verona beach feel. The blue water theme, religious themes and the mythical Italianate country feel Baz Luhrmann aimed for in the movie were all subtly depicted in my final image and worked well with the group.

You glanced over your shoulder while Yoongi propped himself up on his elbows just in time to find Holly circling at the stretched part of Yoongi’s ankles, settling himself in the fluttering hem of the blanket. One of your only hopes of making it to the bathroom in the short commercial break.

“Why don’t you try jerking on the blanket again? I’ll dive roll out of it.”

“And concuss yourself? Not a chance.”

“Would you rather me piss on you?”

in which yoongi arranges the living room furniture into “an L. for love.”

Your first impressions with the new hardwood flooring were already off to a shitty start when you’d nearly bruised your tailbone at the first step off the tiling at the corridor. It was worse when you picked your way around the corner and came stomach first with the back of the couch, a place the massive furniture was, most certainly, not supposed to be.

Yoongi stood innocently in the center of your living room vomit, no piece of furniture aside from the wall mounted television in it’s proper position, particularly not the rug folded into a neat square where it rested against the side of the staircase.

“What are you doing?”

He grinned sheepishly, “Rearranging the furniture?”

When he’d volunteered to meet the flooring guy, therefore taking the entire day off, you didn’t think it was because he didn’t like your placement of the end or coffee tables.

You were like a baby deer in pushing off the threshold from the hallway, catching yourself on the assaulting back of the couch again. Enemy becomes the vice. “Why?”

“Because I thought maybe you’d want to…”

Another wobbly step and Yoongi grinned, bracing himself at a half squat position as he waved his hands upward at the wrist, “Slide to me. I’ll catch you.”

You didn’t believe him but you let yourself do it anyway, half soled shoes gliding you neatly into the outstretch of his arms and he took a stumbling step backward but stabilized your figures nonetheless. He placed his routine, chaste peck to the ranting purse of your lips, routine too in offering his hello, how was your day? but you ignored him in favor of glancing around.

“It looks…nice.”

“It’s not done,” He twisted you, easy when you rolled onto your heels and he pointed around the room with lips in your hair, “See…it’s supposed to be in an L shape.”

“An L?”

“Yeah,” Yoongi’s lips framed your ear, “For love.”

“You’re such a nerd, did you know that?”

In which you purchased a duvet with a design for a reason

“What are you doing?”

You didn’t glance up from where you were tugging up on the dryer fresh sheets, the duvet completely stripped and in a sad pile at the head of the bed. “You didn’t make the bed right.”

Yoongi took a tentative step inside, “How so?”

“The duvet is reversible. You’re supposed to fold it up a certain amount so you can see both designs underneath the pillows.”

“Oh…” He wasn’t tentative in shuffling for the duvet heap, collecting it in two hands before launching himself backward, narrowly avoiding the work your hands were doing as he pulled the duvet over his shoulders and turned to you, “Like this?”

When the sour expression narrowed onto your lips didn’t change, he panicked, lifting one edge and murmuring, “Come here.”

Begrudgingly, you crawled in beside him, allowing him to wrap you up until your nose was pressed into his neck and your thigh was slung over his waist. One deep rooted sigh against his skin and he nudged into your hair, squeezing you.

“I’m sorry.”

“That’s okay. It doesn’t matter much.”

“It does if it matters to you,” Yoongi’s lips shifted to linger on your forehead, “Show me how to do it. You have before but I want to get it right. Please.”

A sigh and you cuddled closer and Yoongi swore you’d be scolding him for the melt of his heart onto the clean sheets next. “Okay.”

“…we have to get up to do that.”

“In a minute. Want to cuddle away the fact that you just jumped on our half made bed.”

You assessed your husband’s appearance with the same muted curiosity but overwhelming affection that you did ever Sunday park walk, honing in on the stretch of legs he chose to reveal with the baggy basketball shorts he’d pulled on underneath the flannel already knotted at his tummy. You ignored a frothing dig at the lack of knee high socks with his black tennis shoes.

It’s all or nothing on the dad look, babe. You have to commit.

Yoongi straightened from securing Holly’s harness, attaching the latter end to the ring on his fanny pack before he beamed at you with an upturned palm. “Ready to go?”

You took his hand but only as means to move closer, your free hand gentle on the center of his chest, “Hey.”

He paused while Holly began to bound forward, tugging at his waist, “Hey, what?”

“Leave the earpiece in the car today,” You gestured for the obnoxious Bluetooth earpiece jutting outward from his cheek.

“What if I need it?”

“You never do.”

“What if-“

“It’s not that important.”

Yoongi sighed in defeat because the deepest, rational part of his conscious knew you were right and he grumpily shucked it from his ear, turning to unlock the car and let it bounce sadly to the passenger seat. Two more clicks of the keys, an affirming beep of the horn, and he set his shoulders. “Okay?”

“Okay.”

And you were off, striding next to Yoongi’s purposeful power waddle with your fingers laced happily in his. You set off about your usual trail, stopping to let Holly scamper harmlessly at a clan of ducks before moving onward on the winding path about the manually created pond.

You let go of his hand only to watch him fish into his fanny pack, returning triumphantly with a biodegradable bag that he swiftly deposited Holly’s mess into. The dimples in his cheeks didn’t falter when he traded it for a tiny bottle of hand sanitizer, swiping the substance to massive palms, dabbing the excess on his shorts, and then reaching for you again.

“Got anything else in there?”

“Yeah, an extra Bluetooth.”

“Yes, it’s called a phone.”

“No my phone is in its utility case, not the fanny pack-“

A Familiar Place - Part 1

A recovery story - this series follows some events in the first year of Bucky’s life back stateside, and his small adventures while learning to come home to himself. This is not an “x Reader” or romance story.

Warnings: some language, probably sloppy editing

A/N: I’m posting the first part of this story to celebrate hitting 100 followers this weekend! Thank you so much everyone! I’m having a blast with this writing blog. This story probably won’t be updated as fast as Born to Run since I don’t have it all written out yet, but I still wanted to post it. Tagging @bitsandbobsandstuff since she answered my question about Steve’s coffee order :) As always, let me know what you think and if you like it!

There’s a stack of books next to his bed that need to go back to the library. Probably overdue, he thinks, and he hasn’t read a single page. He feels a little guilty for it as he stares at their spines, blinking slow and sleepy.

A knock at the door.

“Hey man, you ready?” Sam pokes his head in, eyebrows up and expectant.

“Yeah, yeah,” Bucky nods. Finishes lacing his sneakers. Grabs a baseball cap from the doorknob on his way.

Steve is waiting by the front door, rolling his shoulders underneath a (frankly ridiculous) tight blue shirt. The corner of his mouth quirks up when he turns.

“Mornin’, Buck.”

“Morning.”

“He’s so damn chipper in the mornings,” Sam grins, slapping Bucky’s shoulder. “I feel perky just standing next to you, Tin Man.”

Bucky narrows his eyes but says nothing, just watches Steve shake his head like a fond mother. He knew by now that their animosity was mostly a pretense.

“Ready to go?” the Captain asks, rubbing his hands together, eager and alert despite the bags under his own eyes. Bucky suspects that Steve stays up to see if he needs him, listening for the sounds of his nightmares. He feels a little guilty for that, too.

They do a quick warm up outside, some leg swings and lunges and jumping jacks to get the blood flowing. It’s mostly for Sam - Bucky doesn’t know if it’s possible for him or Steve to pull a muscle, but it definitely won’t be on their morning runs. But they do the routine together anyways, the three of them, their breaths puffing in the spring morning air.

It’s only a couple of miles from their place to Prospect Park, and Bucky and Steve jog at a reasonable pace for Sam’s sake. The conversation is easy between them now - Sam’s date last week with the nurse from the medical wing, Steve’s painting class, Bucky’s therapy sessions. He’s noncommittal on any specifics, but he admits that he thinks they help. And that’s enough - Sam and Steve don’t press him, happy to have him out and moving and living under a sunrise. They take a few laps through the curving paths of the park, nodding to other early morning runners.

About 6 miles in, Bucky yawns.

“Are we gonna actually run today, Rogers, or are we letting the flightless bird set the pace?”

Steve cocks an eyebrow and glances to his left at Sam, the only member of their trio with a collection of sweat on his chest and under his arms and little beads of it running down his face.

“If you think you can keep up, jerk.”

Sam is left behind somewhere around the lake, yelling something about not being afraid to “beat senior citizen ass.”

Here’s the thing about being a super soldier: it doesn’t feel that crazy most of the time. Bucky knows he’s not straining when he moves an entire rack of weights in the gym, or lifts the back end of a car to help put a jack under it. Tony rented out batting cages for the team one time, and he broke the bat on the first swing, simultaneously popping the stitches on the ball. He plays this little game sometimes where he tries to balance as much weight as he can on his index finger - he’s managed 40 pounds so far on his human hand.

But none of that feels special when he does it. Being strong is just a fact about him. It doesn’t make him feel superhuman. “Enhanced”.

Running, though.

When he and Steve go for runs, legs stretching forward and pavement barely felt as it flows beneath their feet, the world feels different. Slower. They dart around the joggers and strollers in their path, and Bucky watches them slip behind him in slow motion. They propel their bodies like bullets, their cadence the rapidfire staccato of a machine gun. The trees ebb and grow in cresting waves of green as the soldiers fly past.

Flying, Bucky thinks. That’s how he feels now.

Steve is a half beat ahead of him, and his head turns in profile, eyes cutting to find Bucky’s. The corner of his lip twitches.

“Tired yet?”

“Not on your life, punk.”

Steve laughs as he nearly doubles their pace, legs a blur to the eyes of everyone they pass. Bucky follows, gripping the bill of his cap as it threatens to fly up at their speed. He shifts it around backwards, the way he sees Sam wear his sometimes. They turn up the periphery of the park to the northeast, chasing the half-risen sun, now above the buildings and trees around them. Bucky can see the shape of the public library as they pass by, the bronze gate gleaming in the morning light. Some of his old gear, Army stuff and boxing gloves and pictures of him and Steve sitting on the hood of a jeep in France, had been on display with their historical collection when he got here - got home - a few months ago. Sam showed him when they went there; Bucky had leaned close, tried to recognize that kid under the glass.

The supersoldiers put in about 20 miles before they decide to find Sam, now that they’ve finally broken a sweat. Cutting across the grass, they slow their pace to human level and look for their friend. Sam is still by the lake, stretching in the grass while laughing with a girl with a long braided ponytail and crazy tight workout clothes. Bucky and Steve share a look as they jog across the lawn, but act polite when the starstruck girl realizes who Sam’s running buddies are.

After taking a couple selfies with them, the girl jogs off to get ready for work, ponytail swinging behind her. Steve raises an eyebrow in Sam’s direction.

“So, what about that nurse?”

Sam gives him the finger.

“Look man, all I’m saying is, you could give it a shot,” Sam shrugs, sipping from his to-go cappuccino. “I mean, who knows, there’s probably plenty of ladies out there who are into this whole thing.” He waves the coffee cup to gesture to Bucky’s entire body.

Bucky frowns. “I have a thing?”

“Sure, you know the brooding, emotionally tortured, dark past kinda thing.” Sam slaps his shoulder. “Lean into it, chicks dig that.”

Bucky nearly chokes on his own drink as he glares at Sam. Steve hides his smile behind his complete monstrosity of a drink. A limited edition something, the clear cup holds 20 ounces of frozen tie-dye, swirling in red, blue, and yellow, and topped with a mountain of whipped cream. Steve Rogers, ever the little shit, had ordered this drink with a straight face, and now slurps loudly on his straw, while taking breaks to run his finger through the whipped cream. Bucky can see the name “Cap” scrawled in neat sharpie on the side of the cup, with a star drawn next to it.

“I’m not interested, okay,” Bucky shrugs, dodging a piece of gum on the sidewalk. They had gotten coffee on their walk back to the brownstone, and were discussing a topic that now made Bucky’s skin crawl with discomfort - women.

“Hey, you don’t have to be looking for a wife,” Sam goes on. “But it wouldn’t hurt you to download an app or two. Tinder. Bumble. Something.”

“Aw, lay off him, Sam,” Steve finally speaks up, shaking his head. “Bucky’s not ready. Maybe he’ll feel like it when he’s back to his old lady killer self.”

Bucky cringes at the phrase, at the half-formed memories it conjures. A swaggering Brooklyn kid who spent far too much time combing his hair and winking at pretty girls. He remembers tucking flowers into the lapel of his suit jacket, spending hours shining his shoes, just to spend a night dancing with some pretty girl he’d never see again. He could barely bring himself to talk to strangers anymore, let alone ask one on a date.

“Shut up, Rogers,” he mumbles into his coffee. “That Bucky is dead and buried.”

He doesn’t have to look to know that Steve’s face has that stricken grimace he pulls whenever Bucky says something dark and self-deprecating. He wishes he could say those things without making Steve feel guilty, cause now he feels guilty…

“I didn’t mean anything by it, Buck…”

“I know, I know,” Bucky waves him off. “Just quit tryin’ to set me up, both of you. Let an old man rest, will you? Jeez…”

His little joke is enough to put Steve and Sam at ease again, and the conversation turns to Steve’s equally lackluster love life until they reach their place and shuffle up the front steps. Ivy creeps and climbs up the walls for this entire block of buildings, and Bucky wonders if someone planted it there. He likes the lush green of it, especially in the morning.

The 3 of them part ways to hit the showers. In his room again, Bucky’s eye is drawn back to his sad little pile of books.

Sam is smart. An asshole, yes, but smart. Which is why his book choices tend to include biographies, history, political topics - the stack on the nightstand includes only one novel, a recent bestseller about a retired veteran adopting a dog. Bucky remembers reading, being a reader - he remembers bringing home books from school or trading them at the bookstore or receiving them as gifts from Steve. But not those kinds of books. Nothing boring. Nothing to remind him of the uncertain, hard world he lived in.

He stares at the spines of Sam’s books for a few more moments, then hurries through the shower, his mind made up.

“Um, excuse me,” he clears his throat at the front desk. “I need to return these, but, uh. I think - well, they’re overdue.”

Bucky tries a smile at the clerk, a middle-aged woman with a short-cropped haircut, but he can feel how unnatural it looks on his face. The clerk raises an eyebrow at him - he realizes he should have waited a bit before coming here; the tips of his hair are still wet, tiny wet spots coloring the shoulders on his hoodie.

“Well, let’s scan them and see,” she sighs, pulling his books across the desk. Bucky shifts, his hands curling and uncurling in his front pockets. The old Bucky could probably charm his way out of the fine, but this one? Not a chance in hell, Barnes. The librarian grabs the first book and scans the barcode taped to the plastic jacket.

His books are 13 days overdue - costing him a grand total of $5.20. He thinks of Steve’s now expensive coffee habit as he hands over the bill and change. There goes one of his frozen sugar nightmares.

With his fine taken care of, Bucky wanders his way through the fiction section, his eyes passing over names and titles without catching on anything. Sam’s books weren’t his taste. But he doesn’t even remember his own taste. Gloved fingers drift over the shelves, tapping on the wood.

“Can I help you find something?”

Bucky is embarrassed to be so startled - his head jerks around to see the old man standing there, a warm smile on his face. His shoulders are stooped a little, hands clasped behind his back as he tilts his head up to meet Bucky’s eyes.

“No...well, I don’t know,” Bucky huffs. “I don’t really know what I’m looking for.”

“Oh, I see,” the man nods. The crooked name tag on his striped shirt reads ‘Marvin’. “Would you like some recommendations, then?”

Bucky hesitates, quirking the corner of his mouth down.

“I guess so,” he nods. “I like...fiction. But I haven’t really read anything in a long time.”

Marvin nods quietly, pursing his lips. His eyes pass over the shelves behind his coke bottle glasses, tapping a finger to his chin.

“Follow me,” he shuffles down the aisle, waving a hand behind him. Bucky obeys, turning the corner onto the next set of author’s names. Marvin’s mouth moves silently as he walks along, searching and searching.

“Aha! Here we go.” He reaches up to a shelf at eye level, taking a book and showing Bucky the front cover. “This has been a classic since it was published, really. And the author wrote a trilogy that followed. It’s fantasy, maybe that’s your thing?”

“I...I’m trying new things,” Bucky decides, clearing his throat as he takes the book, admiring the pastoral scene on the cover. “Um, you said he wrote other books?”

Marvin smiles and turns back to the shelf, reaching for the adjacent books.

Bucky’s backpack makes a ‘thunk’ sound as he drops it next to his bed, closing the door with his foot. He had loaned all four books that Marvin suggested, eager as he read their inside covers. Maybe he and Steve and Sam could watch the movie adaptations sometime, on one of their pizza nights. He had always opted out of choosing a movie, so overwhelmed by the options and apathetic to Sam’s DVD library. But maybe he would suggest it to Steve next time. Steve would like that.

He toes off his sneakers, shuffling back and messing up the comforter on his perfectly made bed. When he first moved in, he thought the room was furnished with way too many pillows - who needs more than one pillow? Now he fluffs the three behind his back and props himself up against the headboard, leaning over to slip the first book out of his backpack. He settles back on his bed, folds back the cover to the first chapter.

What’s Athflow? Everything To Know About 2021’s Newest Loungewear Trend

After a year that can be measured by the sheer volume of sweatpants acquired to work from home, there’s a glimmer of optimism on the horizon with vaccine rollouts now underway. But even as our most glamorous ensembles await their glorious day back in the sun, a return to some degree of normalcy doesn’t mean we’ll be leaving our loungewear in the dust. In fact, according to the 2021 Pinterest Predicts report, comfortable clothing is poised to take on a new kind of leading role in our wardrobes this year, as part of an on-the-brink-of-trending aesthetic the visual discovery platform dubbed “Athflow.”

“Different parts of our lives in 2020, and for better or for worse in 2021, have all just collapsed into each other,” says Aya Kanai, Pinterest’s head of content and editorial partnerships, pointing to how intertwined our professional and personal spaces have become as we began to work from home. An upheaval in how we dress followed suit in the form of sweatsuits, nap dresses, and tie-dye — a visible response to cultural shifts in how and where we work, socialise, and unwind. As we continue to adapt to the changes in our lives, loungewear will continue to evolve, too, Kanai says.

Hence “Athflow” — a word that illustrates where the trend came from, and where it’s going. This next phase of loungewear may be a product of the seemingly immortal athleisure movement, but it calls for a refined emphasis on styling by way of slick fabrics, cascading silhouettes, and coordinated sets. In short, Athflow is a polished take on ultra-casual, loose, comfortable apparel. It’s the fun feathered trim of Sleeper’s pyjamas, the satisfying fit of Pangaia’s orchid purple track pants, and the romance of a billowing long-sleeve blouse by Lisa Says Gah. It’s the answer to how we’ll keep comfortable when we’re no longer relegated to the sofa ,but still not ready to transition to the outfits we wore pre-pandemic.

Drawing from the behaviors of more than 400 million Pinterest users — many of whom come to the platform to plan for the future, be that a forthcoming home decor upgrade, a desert elopement, even an entrepreneurial dream-in-progress — Kanai and her team were able to make data-driven predictions on what they believe consumers will be needing in the months ahead. Their annual report identifies Athflow as an emerging trend in the fashion category ,with major potential to take off in 2021 (and for anyone with doubts, let it be known that eight out of 10 of the company’s predictions came true for 2020, the year that no one saw coming). With search volume around terms like “home dress women” doubling and “oversized outfit” tripling compared to this time last year, along with spikes in activity surrounding “soft outfits,” “oversized outfits,” and “cotton jumpsuits,” the people — or at least, their IP addresses — have spoken. And what they want are ultra-wearable looks that can be dressed up or down; looks that are for swooning or Zooming.

More specifically, Pinterest defines Athflow as “professional enough for the ‘office,’ stretchy enough for the yoga mat, and comfy enough for the couch.” This does sound a lot like athleisure itself. The difference, however, is how the category could inform the way we turn up to the workplace or more business-like settings, whenever and wherever that might be.

After a year of comfort taking centre stage in all things style, it’s not so far off to imagine office-goers feeling tempted to swap their crisp pre-pandemic slacks for roomy joggers upon receiving the green light to go back to their long-abandoned desks. Kanai also believes the rise of Athflow will correspond with the increase of genderless clothing — a fitting observation considering the trend’s characterising lack of form and inclusive fit. The rules of the dress code as we know it may become as flexible as the lockdown fabrics we’ll be reluctant to abandon.

“This idea of who is the self that you bring to the office and what does professionalism look like, I think is very much reflected in the Athflow concept because what is appropriate for professional dressing, what’s appropriate for career dressing, all of that is changing,” Kanai asserts.

Heather Gramston, head of womenswear at Browns Fashion, shares that it came as no surprise that loungewear over-performed for the online luxury retailer last year as comfort eclipsed all other priorities for those following stay-at-home orders in their abodes. And with working-from-home forecasted to stick in some capacity post-pandemic, so too, she says, will the appeal of the outfits we wear while doing so, whether or not we’re still in the cloffice (that’s quarantine speak for a closet-office).

“We expect this to continue as there is likely to be a permanent shift to working more often from home and, undeniably, our mindset has changed around loungewear which is now being incorporated as an everyday outfit outside of that working-from-home vibe,” Gramston explains. It’s true that it’s not uncommon to find people wearing pyjama-esque get-ups or ribbed two-piece sets à la Simon Miller everywhere from the park to the grocery store (and a sleek pair of mules to boot).

As such, designers are being intentional about including more casualwear in their latest collections so that next season’s loungewear looks are versatile enough to transition from informal to formal settings. For Spring/Summer 2021, Browns has boosted its roster of brands with a bundle of increasingly popular labels to offer relaxed silhouettes in cotton and knit fabrics. These include The Frankie Shop, Live The Process, and LESET, among others.

High-fashion’s heavy hitters are also embracing this hybrid aesthetic of laid-back business attire. Case in point: Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons’s S/S 21 co-debut featuring extra-long hoodies layered over voluminous skirts paired with pointy-toed kitten heels (see photo above). Plus-size retailer 11 Honoré also recently launched an “Athluxury” collection. The retailer’s design director Danielle Williams-Eke describes it as “pieces that can work comfortably throughout the day but that are chic, stylish, and fit well.” This translates into a size-inclusive selection of satin T-shirts, cashmere dusters, and silky wide-leg pants from its private label and by brands such as LNA, LaPointe, Azeeza, and Baja East — all of which are worthy of a pin on an Athflow board.

The analogous trends may be about ease, but, Williams-Eke cautions, to eschew the fine line between Athflow and traditional loungewear, fit must always come first. “One rule I always follow when wearing flowy and oversized pieces is to balance your proportions. If you are wearing an oversized top, opt for a fitted pant or legging. Wearing a wide-leg flowy pant? Pair it with a fitted top. Layer your flowy jackets and sweaters over a form-fitting tank or dress,” she advises.

Like lockdown, stay-at-home attire has lasted far longer than we thought, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. With some tough days likely still ahead of us in this pandemic, the transition to outdoor clothing will be as gradual as the return to “normal” itself, so don’t store those sweatpants away just yet. But what initially materialised as a temporary fix for dressing behind closed doors has opened up new ones to a form of sartorial self-expression — one centring the wearer’s comfort above all else.

Challenge: Build your Summer Wardrobe on a Shoestring Budget

Real life confession: I have gained some weight. Kind of a lot of weight for my small-ish frame. I’m not happy with it. And I could go on about the whys and hows and what I should do to combat it. Maybe my next post could be about my fitness and health goals. (Don’t hold your breath). But the truth is, I don’t have time to bemoan my current weight. I’m looking forward to a busy summer with my family and tons of activities. It’s already hitting 90 degrees on the regular here in the Deep South so what I need at this moment is an inexpensive, comfortable warm weather wardrobe. And I need it with two day free shipping! Are you ready to build a summer wardrobe on a budget? If so, keep reading, because I have some awesome finds to share!

My goal: I’m going to keep my budget as low as possible while still choosing items with excellent reviews and free prime shipping. The plan is to find the following items: 5 tops, 1 maxi dress, 1 maxi skirt, 1 pair black capris, 1 skirt/skort, 1 pair of shorts, 1 Swim suit, 1 Summer bag and 1 pair of sandals. My thought process is that if I am starting nearly from scratch these items would carry me through the summer for the most part (assuming I have some shoes that still fit from past seasons.) What do you think, is it doable?

Five Tops: This category will have a little wiggle room because you really want to find styles that flatter your figure. I am going to go with Free to Live 3 Pack of Dolman tops ($39.99) because I love how Dolman style shirts camouflage my apple-figure problem areas. Plus I think the drapey quality really takes them to the next level, style-wise. I also, love the Free to Live 3 Pack of Kimono Tops ($39.99), or, even cheaper, the Free to Live 3 Pack of V neck Tees ($14.99-$19.99). For the fourth shirt, I’m going to grab a fun logo or graphic tee, such as this striped floral top, available in several fun patterns ($14.50). For the last top, I’d choose something a little dressier like this Crochet Lace Overlay Top $19.99. Total for 5 tops: $49.48 or $74.48 (based on which 3 pack you choose)

Maxi Dress: There are some beautiful maxi dresses on Amazon, so I recommend you check out the whole category! After browsing for several evenings I have settled on either this Chevron Print Maxi ($19.99) or this Bohemian Summer Striped Maxi ($13.99). Both look comfy and forgiving with great reviews!

Black Capris: Of course, if you prefer another neutral color, these don’t have to be black. (I love olive green as an alternative, but obviously navy, denim, or grey would also fit the bill). And depending on your preference, you might choose any cropped pants from gaucho style to joggers. I was looking for comfy and cool, so I settled on these Made by Johnny Culottes ($15.95). They look so comfortable, and I think they would work with all my tops. A more casual, classic look would be these Champion Jersey Capri Pants (only $13.43).

Maxi Skirt: In my mind, there is nothing quite so comfortable as a soft maxi skirt to throw on after a long work day or even when you’re leaving the beach on vacation. I like to splash out a little with a skirt but of course there are plenty of colors and patterns available. Check out the Lock & Love Coral Tie Dye Maxi ($13.97) or, for a solid option that’s a little more interesting structurally, the Regna X Boho Stretch Skirt ($13.99).

Skort (or Skirt): I have grown fond of Skorts lately, but if they aren’t your thing a cute skirt would definitely work great here. I love the look of the White Sierra Women’s West Loop Trail Skort ($22.96) or I’d love to try the Columbia Back Beauty Skort which is only $10.41 right now in my size! Wow!

Shorts: Every girl needs a good pair of denim shorts in her closet. Don’t forget you can make them easily yourself! (Turn Thrifted Jeans Into Perfect Cut-offs!). If we are trying our best to stay on budget, that’s definitely the best option! But, if you want to order a pair of denim shorts on Amazon, here are a couple pair that are promising at the right price: Wrangler Authentic Women’s Cuffed Short ($16.99) or Wrangler Authentic Women’s Cuffed Bermuda ($16.99).

Swim Suit: So far we’ve had fun, haven’t we? So there’s no need to freak out and slam down your laptop just because you read the word “swim suit”. Remember, Amazon Prime has free returns, so just take your time, read reviews, and give yourself some grace when it comes to the painful things in life, like shopping for a bathing suit. Ok, now that I’m done talking myself down, let’s take a look at a couple of options: HOTAPEI Women’s Racerback Tankini Set ($24.99) and MiYang Women’s One-piece Ruched Swim Dress ($21.08). Both of these look like strong possibilities. If all else fails, there’s always the awkward highschool fall-back, wearing a tie dye tshirt over your swim suit and just jumping in the pool.

Summer Bag: Theoretically, you (and I) probably already have a bag that will work for summer (after all, weight changes don’t really affect a handbag’s functionality). But purses are a fun and functional addition to an outfit, so I didn’t want to skip over the category. I have two recommendations that I think you will love: the BySummer Tribal Striped Sling Bag ($10.99) or Waterfly Sling Backpack ($16.99).

Sandals: My feet tend to be pretty picky, but if I had to choose just ONE pair of shoes to wear most of the summer it would definitely be a pair of Crocs. They are just so comfortable, wear so well, and tend to be ridiculously cheap. Each season the styles continue to improve making them a no-brainer in my opinion. So for my summer wardrobe, I would choose between Crocs Isabella ($19) and Crocs Meleen Twist Sandal ($24.95). Both styles would work great with every single piece of clothing we’ve chosen.

Bottom Line: Ok, I’m pretty happy with the options we’ve found and I think this would make for a great summer wardrobe. To tally up, we’ve found a total of 5 tops, maxi dress, black capri pants, maxi skirt, skort, shorts, swimsuit, summer bag, and one pair of sandals. In total, that’s 13 items. Of course, your total could vary wildly based on your size and color choices, on top of the fact that Amazon’s prices change all the time. Most of the sizes I chose were Large because that’s probably what will fit me best. Adding the total from each category you could spend as little as $169.34 or as much as $231.29.
