So one of my many goals of 2018 was to be less of a garbage person...
I mean that very literally.
I want to produce less trash. Now, of course, yes I recycle and use Tupper ware, but there are so many little things that easily make lots and lots of waste and it builds up fast. People always talk about the three R’s Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, but there is actually a fourth R and it’s Refuse. If you have the choice to prevent something from being made or used it prevents it from ever needing to be waited or recycled in the first place.
So we are about 7 weeks into 2018 and here is what I’m doing thus far
Composting
So my first action was to get into the world of composting. I did some reach on worms and bin and storage. I live in an apartment (second floor) so a backyard compost pile was not an option for me. I finally found a small compost container on Amazon that I liked. However I a weird twist of events Amazon won’t ship it to me...no joke they literally won’t ship compost bins to my zip code, apparently, there is some ordinance against it. So did I give in, never, instead I have resorted to tossing (non-stinky) scraps into the greenery around the complex. Crazy maybe a little...but I only do small increments like apple cores and tomatoes that have gone yucky. So far if nothing else it’s made me feel less wasteful and I’ve yet to get any complaints from the neighbors. If you live in a home with a backyard start a compost pile it’s insanely easy to find more information on that right here
Breaking the mini plastic addiction
Now you’re probably thinking Kate, everyone is 2018 has at least some form of Tupper ware and I have tons of it too, I use lots of tuppers for lunches and left overs. However, I honestly have a terrible habit when it comes to minor plastic bit such as disposable cutlery, straws, and of course Starbucks cups. However, as of today, I’ve been about 2-3 weeks of packing reusable cutlery in my work lunches which has become a good and easy habit. I even while eating at a fast food place the other day turned down plastic forks in use of my own at home. I’ve totally stopped using any form of zip lock bag and if the time occurs when I forget my reusable bag at the grocery store I pay the extra bit for paper. (Seriously guys plastic bags are a trash nightmare). Plus I’m making a commitment to cut the chord on my use of press and seal wrap. (More on that below). The toughest let go for me are straws, I know it sounds insane, but I freaking LOVE using straws. (Also, I am fairly clumsy and using a straw to drink out of cup means a lot less embarrassing mishaps) But the time has come to cut the chord, and turn down the straw. I want to get the point where I even request not to have them at restaurants and bars. (P.S. I’m obviously not counting using reusable straws which I use in my tumbles all the damn time.)
The Purchases I recommend
Water Bottle: OK I know it sounds insane, but there are still people on this planet who don’t own a reuseable water bottle. If you are this person WTF are you doing with your life? Seriously cute, durable water bottles are practically a dime a dozen. Get one or three just stop buying augafina by the 12 pack, one it’s insanely overpriced and two why are you living in 1995?! Here is a store with great quality bottles. I have literally dropped my Nalgene down two flights of cement stares and it’s completely fine.
Bee’s Wrap: You, just like me may be seeing this stuff pop up all over facebook. I just ordered some this week and am skeptical, but determined to cut my ties with press and seal wrap. I’ll do a small review of it once I’ve had ti for a week or so. If you want to get some too click here or if you want to make your own click here. Side note has anyone heard of a soy wax version of this??
How about you guys, I would love to hear about your resolutions for the year, share them in my ask box!
Happy Friday lovelies!
P.S. I’ll be tracking my less trash journey with #BelessofaGarbagePerson
