Latinx singers of classical music: a list so incomplete as to be positively embarrassing

What I wrote in the previous post in this series applies here as well:

Some of these artists are up-and-comers; some of their careers were at their height in the 1970s, when I first began paying attention; a few go back further than that.

Although in this case it’s more than a few — which, along with the fact I kept finding more and more younger artists, is why I decided to end my research and post this now.

I’ve included many of the younger ones solely on the basis of reputation, without having heard them. Not all are or were A-listers, but they are all people who sing or sang Western classical music for a living, or taught others to do so, or a combination of the two.

Assembling this list has required me to consider some questions of inclusion. Do the children of European immigrants who, in some cases, didn’t even bother to give their children Latinate names belong here? Undoubtedly many people will say no; I disagree. (I have drawn the line, however, at Spanish or Portuguese artists who decamped to their countries’ former colonies.)

“We demand that the Police and the government respond to this crisis of violence against LGBTQ people immediately and urgently. It is your duty to report the status of investigations and conduct them in accordance with established protocols for hate crimes, the correct treatment of trans and LGBTQ people and in accordance with the reform of the Police. They are killing us and the government is looking the other way. This epidemic of anti-LGBTQ violence is as important as the emergency that we are all experiencing right now”, said Pedro Julio Serrano, a CABE spokesman.

On Monday, April 27, CABE sent a letter to the Secretary of Public Security, Pedro Janer, and to the Commissioner of the Police Bureau, Henry Escalera, demanding an immediate and urgent meeting with Janer and Escalera in order to demand answers on the status of the investigations, the plan for surveillance and prevention of these crimes, as well as a guarantee that the processes will be carried out in accordance with the protocols and free of prejudice.

“The violence we are experiencing has its roots in the hateful rhetoric and actions by fundamentalist politicians and religious leaders who incite violence, who persecute, demonize and attack LGBTQ people. Enough of using us as scapegoats for your divisive agendas. We are as human beings as the rest of society and we deserve the same respect, the same freedom and the same equity”, said Carmen Milagros Vélez Vega, a CABE spokesperson. 

Natasha Alor, a young trans activist, called for “creating a society in which respect for diversity is a value, not a weapon to attack the experiences of another human being. Our lives experience violence every second of the day. This is not only unfair, it is inhumane. As trans people we demand respect for our lives and the guarantee that justice will be done so that these crimes do not go unpunished and do not happen again”. 

Lastly, Justin Jesus Santiago, a CABE ally, emphasized that “it is time for this government to demonstrate that it is going to fulfill its duty to protect trans people and LGBTQ people. We recognize the Coronavirus emergency, but there is also the emergency of homophobic and transphobic violence that is killing us. It is time to act. Not one more LGBTQ person can die because of hatred.”

There is a huge difference between a home movie and a documentary. Lots of people film their families – however it is rare that anyone outside of that family would really care to see that film.

That knowledge is certainly not lost on Julita Salmerón, the subject of this film. Early on and often here she advises her son – Spanish actor Gustavo Salmerón, who has created this film from hundreds of hours of footage shot over about a decade – that no one who doesn’t know her will be interested in seeing a film about her.

Thankfully, Gustavo recognized that his mother was wrong. Julita is a true character; smart, funny, eccentric, more than a little strange, an avid hoarder, but also a vibrant life force and a natural film presence. When she is on the screen, you can’t look at anyone else.

The slightly oddball title is a listing of Julita’s fondest wishes as a little girl. She wanted to have lots of kids, a pet monkey, and to live in a castle. Of course, everyone has big dreams as a kid, but Julita (her given first name was Julia, but she changed it as a young woman because she wanted to stand out) actually achieved all of her goals.

All of them are present and accounted for in this film: Julita’s large extended family, the cluttered castle that she and her husband worked so hard to buy from a relatively modest background, and even the monkey – though the monkey, who presumably died years ago, is relegated to a few short appearances in old photos, or archival home footage.

The spine of the story – literally – is the somewhat odd look through the thousands of boxes in Julita’s castle to find a couple of pieces of vertebrae from the skeleton of her long-dead grandmother. The relative was murdered during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and the corpse was left on the shore to rot as a warning.

For some reason that even she can’t quite explain, Julita decided to keep the bones as a memorial to her murdered ancestor, but somewhere along the line the body parts got swallowed up by all of the clutter in the home. Julita’s children, particularly Gustavo, become a little bit obsessive about finding the bones and giving them a proper burial.

This – and a financial setback that forces Julita and her husband to sell the castle – leads to the entire family plunging into all the mess of boxes and drawers to look and prune through decades worth of old things. The family tries to get rid of lots of things, each of which Julita generally fights or frets over.

However, there is a lot more to this than just an extended Spanish episode of Hoarders.

No, Lots of Kids, A Monkey and a Castle is more intrigued in exploring the family dynamic, and particularly the life and intriguing worldview of this offbeat woman. We see her life played out in pictures and home movies, hear her passions and trivialities shared with equal conviction. Then as she ages and becomes infirm, it causes her to look inside and try to share her philosophy of life, even though she knows it is as unique as she is.

It makes a personal connection. Julita reminded me a lot of my similarly larger-than-life late grandmother, and I have no doubt that most people have someone similarly dramatic who has been important in their lives.

Julita was an imperfect woman, but she tried her best. In the end, her son Gustavo disproved her own presumption. Even though we don’t personally know her, this film about her life is endlessly fascinating.

Sigo pensando en Beatriz Montañez. Me la imagino hace siete u ocho años viviendo en un barrio de Madrid, céntrico aunque bien orientado hacia los estudios de televisión donde currara cada tarde. Seguramente en un piso algo más grande de lo necesario: una habitación de invitados, un baño extra, un espacio remanente en el salón para practicar yoga. Exquisitamente decorado: fondo blanco, detalles verde manzana, tal vez madera oscura en la barra americana de la cocina. Estantes repletos de libros de Anagrama y regalos de compromisos; en cada uno había una planta y un recuerdo hasta que la invasión de objetos nuevos desterró de su lugar a las decoraciones. Todo amontonándose poco a poco, en su piso y en su vida, hasta generar el cortocircuito.

Sin ser Marie Kondo, percibo que los recuerdos y los objetos son como colesterol y triglicéridos que van obstruyendo los vasos sanguíneos por los que circula la sangre de las casas hasta infartarlos. Es la parte buena de las mudanzas: que hacen posible una revisión a fondo de nuestras posesiones y, si el corazón y el ojo están entrenados para no ejercer la excepción y la anuencia, desprendernos de la mayoría. Me imagino a Beatriz Montañez descubriendo que nada era tan necesario: que basta con menos menaje, que la memoria se guarda mejor escrita a mano que inscrita en cosas, que los libros pueden tener más vidas.

La tarea doméstica que más extraño cuando viajo es tender ropa blanca. Poner la lavadora no es excesivamente romántico - seguro que Beatriz Montañez lava a mano, con jabón de Marsella. Es más bien la sensación de sacar la ropa del tambor, llevarla hasta las cuerdas, depositarla en ella bien estiradas, colocar las pinzas justas, dejarse envolver en el esponjoso bosque de prendas. Preferiblemente, bajo el sol de mediodía.

Research 4.5: Digital and not digital illustration

Is a distinction between a digital or non-digital illustration?

There is an obvious distinction between digital and non-digital illustration and that is how is made illustration, but I do not think that the core of illustration has changed.

The first two illustrations are by Violeta Hernández: This is an example of how an illustrator reconcile two different ways to generate a similar idea but analogically and digitally. The results are quite different aesthetically, but they are also quite similar on the subject and the feeling.

The other two are part of TAVO MONTAÑEZ it is easy to see the base for the drawing is graphite but the rest is done on photoshop, cleaning and the highlights. This is a way to combine the best of two techniques. This is closer to analogic than digitally but photoshop and others have made this easy for the artist. Change the intensity of the colour, cleaning, changing the background was difficult now it is easy.

Beatriz Mayumi is the last three pictures. The first two is the sketches and the character development. The last one is the final page. She uses a Wacom like me. I have not been able to use colour in a computer that looks nice to me (for my use, they are plenty of people like her that have a great colour texture and pallet)

These are three artists that are closer to analogic work, but they still very immersed in the digital world. I am not so attracted to editorial illustration, but I see the benefits of learning. I find analogic more interesting, so this is the reason my research focuses on the use of digital techniques that highlight the analogic or complement but not overpower.

The last part that I wanted to highlight is movement. Now it is easy to add a tiny bit of movement to an illustration just for fun or to highlight an idea. I love that.

La Riviera Maya se llena de estrellas del cine con los Premios Platino

Playa del Carmen (México), 28 abr (EFE).- La Riviera Maya mexicana se llenó anoche de estrellas del cine iberoamericano en un evento que sirvió para abrir boca ante los Premios Platino, que se entregan el próximo domingo. Antes de pisar la alfombra roja del Teatro Gran Tlachco del parque Xcaret, destacados actores y actrices de la región acudieron a disfrutar del espectáculo del Circo del Sol "Joya" y de una fiesta de bienvenida. Entre los asistentes estaban algunos de los nominados que podrían llevarse uno de los Platino de esta quinta edición, como las aspirantes a mejor actriz Daniela Vega ("Una mujer fantástica"), Emma Suárez ("Las hijas de Abril") y Antonia Zegers ("Los perros"). Asier Etxeandía y Aura Garrido, nominados en la categoría de mejor interpretación masculina y femenina por "Velvet Colección" y "El ministerio del tiempo", respectivamente, tampoco quisieron perderse el espectáculo. Como tampoco lo hicieron los actores Ernesto Alterio, Mónica Huerta, Hugo Silva, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Erick Elías y Gustavo Salmerón, director de "Muchos hijos, un mono y un castillo" (nominada a mejor película documental), quien acudió junto con su pareja, Beatriz Montañez. También estuvieron presentes el cineasta Michel Franco, director de la aplaudida "Las hijas de Abril"; el actor Eugenio Derbez, quien ejercerá como presentador de la gala, además del presentador y escritor Boris Izaguirre y del modelo Jon Kortajarena. El presidente de la Entidad de Gestión de Derechos de los Productores Audiovisuales (EGEDA), Enrique Cerezo, pronunció unas palabras antes del evento en las que subrayó el papel de los Premios Platino como una "gran plataforma" que da visibilidad al séptimo arte iberoamericano. Asimismo, destacó el "talento y diversidad enriquecedora" de las películas estrenadas este año en habla española y portuguesa, las cuales podrían ampliar su mercado en los próximos años porque el castellano "seguirá creciendo (en número de hablantes), sobre todo en Estados Unidos". "Una mujer fantástica" parte como favorita en la quinta edición de los Premios Platino gracias a sus nueve nominaciones, entre ellas, la de mejor película de ficción iberoamericana y mejor dirección para Sebastián Lelio. Los galardones, promovidos por la Entidad de Gestión de Derechos de los Productores Audiovisuales (Egeda) y la Federación Iberoamericana de Productores Cinematográficos y Audiovisuales (Fipca), se entregarán este domingo por primera vez en México, tras pasar por Ciudad de Panamá, Marbella, Punta del Este y Madrid. En su primer libro, Niadela, Beatriz Montañez cuenta, en forma de diario, el primero de los 5 años que lleva viviendo sola en una casa, en pleno bosque, sin más proximidad que la de la naturaleza. Un retiro con el que pretendía encontrar lo que no tenía. Después de una fugaz carrera, asegura que "necesitaba silencio". "Había mucho ruido en mi vida", cuenta Beatriz y recuerda que le provocaba inestabilidad.
