Algérie 05 // De l’autre côté

Chacune de son côté de la mer, voisines par les eaux. Face à face, la France et l’Algérie se toisent et entre elles, cette éternelle distance : bleue, scintillante, où les limites du ciel et de l’eau se confondent l’une en l’autre.

Alors je rencontre, moi aussi, cette mer désormais vue depuis l’autre côté.

D’un côté de la Méditerranée que je n’avais jusqu’alors jamais foulé.

Ici, dominant Oran depuis l’ancienne forteresse espagnole de Santa Cruz. Incontournable. Le premier lieu dans lequel Mohammed nous amène dès notre descente de l’avion, faisant vrombir son camion, allumant manuellement un deuxième radiateur à l’approche des côtes, passant du trafic furieux des périphériques aux ruelles sinueuses qui bordent un bidonville, tout ce bâti semblant se ruer vers la mer, avec ses cycles de constructions parfaitement visible, comme les couches sédimentaires d’un massif rocheux qui nous parleraient des différentes époques de la terre... Ici aussi, sur le parvis de notre Dame d’Afrique, à Alger, Bab-El-Oued s’étendant au pied de la balustrade. Océane assise sur un banc à côté de vieux messieurs qui, comme toujours depuis notre arrivée, s’adressent à moi pour nous demander ce que nous faisons ici et qui nous sommes venus voir. Océane, presque systématiquement mise à l’écart de ces discussions “d’homme à homme”, écoute et préfère dessiner. Il y a de ces affaires qui, ici, ne semblent jamais laisser de place au sexe opposé, assigné à d’autres tâches et à d’autres échanges.

Ici aussi, sur les chemins creusés dans la roche qui longent la côte, à Béjaïa, l’ancienne “Bougie” qui donna son nom à nos célèbres chandelles, la trace indélébile du colonisateur... Ces chemins superbes, peuplés de pêcheurs, de promeneurs et saupoudrés de sacs d’ordures éventrés, carbonisés, abandonnés, comme presque chaque kilomètre de la côte.

La mer algérienne a bien des histoires à raconter, pour l’heure, je ne fais que les effleurer.
