An exasperated Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said early Tuesday morning after two police officers were shot that he is so worried about safety at public events that he will “be happy” when he is no longer the mayor, prompting national attention and calls for his resignation.
Standing alongside police brass outside Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Kenney made the comments just after midnight, about two hours after gunfire rang out and chaos ensued during the city’s annual Independence Day celebration on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
“There’s not an event or a day where I don’t lay on my back at night, looking at the ceiling and worry about stuff,” he said in response to questions about the administration’s response to gun violence. “So everything we have in the city over the last seven years, I worry about. I don’t enjoy Fourth of July. I didn’t enjoy the [2016] Democratic National Convention. I didn’t enjoy the NFL Draft. Im waiting for something bad to happen all the time.
“So I’ll be happy when I’m not here — when I’m not mayor, and I can enjoy some stuff.”
A reporter followed up, asking: “You’re looking forward to not being mayor?”
“Yeah,” Kenney said with a smirk, “as a matter of fact.”
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw began speaking and returned attention to the response to the shooting, which left two officers with graze wounds. Both were treated and released Monday night. No one had been arrested as of Tuesday morning.
Criticism and calls for resignation
Kenney’s moment of candor swiftly garnered national attention and criticism mounted Tuesday from colleagues in City Hall. A handful of Philadelphia Democrats who are considering runs to replace him were especially harsh or called for Kenney — who leaves office in January 2024 — to step down now.
One of them, at-large Councilmember Derek Green, tweeted Tuesday morning that Kenney should resign, writing: “We are all exhausted by the level of gun violence in our City. However, our City needs someone now with the passion and vision to lead us forward. Resign.”
Minutes later, at-large Councilman Allan Domb — who is also considering a run for mayor — called for Kenney’s resignation, writing on Twitter that, “Philadelphia is in a crisis and needs a mayor who wants the job and all its responsibilities. It is beyond time for @PhillyMayor to resign for the good of the city and its residents.”
Controller Rebecca Rhynhart, who has said that the city does not have strong executive leadership and that the administration’s response to gun violence lacks urgency, posted that the mayor’s statement was “irresponsible.”
And at-large Councilmember Helen Gym, the progressive stalwart also counted among potential mayoral candidates, stopped short of calling for the mayor to step down but slammed his administration’s response to gun violence, saying in a statement that “Jim Kenney may be defeated but this city won’t be.”
She also tweeted that the “most offensive part of the Mayor’s remarks last night are not about feeling defeated, but the implication that he doesn’t have to care when he’s not in office,” adding: “Put your big boy pants on and get to work!”
Kenney’s comments stood in contrast to messages tweeted out from his official account minutes later, where he wrote that his administration would “continue to do everything we can to combat our city’s gun violence.”
“Our traditions cannot and will not be ruined by the scourge of gun violence,” the tweet said. “I love this city, and as Mayor, there’s nothing more I want than to help solve this problem and keep our residents and visitors safe.”
Kenney frustrated over gun laws
Kenney’s admission that he’s looking forward to not doing this job anymore was in some ways unsurprising coming from a term-limited mayor who has appeared increasingly isolated and unengaged in his second term.
It was also illustrative of just how fed up he is with the surge of shootings in Philadelphia that began in 2020 and led to last year being the city’s deadliest in recorded history.Mayoral fadeaway: The strange final chapter of Jim Kenney’s administration
He has said his administration is doing what it can to stem the tide. The Police Department has been making arrests for illegal gun possession at a record pace, and the administration will spend millions of dollars in the coming fiscal year on a variety of antiviolence programs outside law enforcement.
But Kenney also often places blame with the GOP-led state legislature, the national political environment, or society writ large. After a mass shooting last month left three people dead and 11 others wounded, he appeared in public for the first time two days later after flying home from a conference in Reno, Nev. He said that without stronger gun regulations at the state and federal levels, the proliferation of firearms in the city will continue.
“I’m not passing the buck to the legislature or the U.S. Congress, but it really does make it more difficult,” he said last month.
After the police shooting late Monday night, Kenney also blamed a recent Supreme Court decision that struck down a New York law intended to limit the public carry of guns.
“We live in America, and we have the Second Amendment, and we have the Supreme Court of the United States telling everybody they can carry a gun wherever they want,” he said. “We have to come to grips with what this country is about right now. We had a beautiful day out there today except for some nitwit … who has a gun and probably shouldn’t have had it.”

Tyler the Creator, Lil Uzi Vert, Jazmine Sullivan, Kodak Black, Pusha T & JID – Made in America Festival (Day 1) – Benjamin Franklin Parkway – Philadelphia, PA – September 3. 2022
Bad Bunny, Snoh Aalegra, Tate McRae & Victoria Monét – Made in America Festival (Day 2) – Benjamin Franklin Parkway – Philadelphia, PA – September 4. 2022
Crowds gathered back at Philadelphia's Ben Franklin Parkway for Jay-Z's Made in America this Labor Day holiday weekend. This was the festival's second year back after a quick hiatus during 2020 due to COVID, and both the musicians and attendees were elated to be there. Food trucks were shelling out famous Philly Soft Pretzels and modern Asian cuisine from WokWorks, while the bar lines were a bit shorter – I'd say due to the majority of the concertgoers being on the younger side.
Tumblr media
The musical performances on day one were packed from start to finish. Whether the crowds were rushing the grounds to hear JID close out his set with his hit "Stick" or rapping along to Pusha-T and his feature on Lamborghini Mercy – the energy was palpable throughout the festival grounds.
Tumblr media
Two Philly locals, Jazmine Sullivan and Lil Uzi Vert took the stages back-to-back. Jazmine began her performance with her Grammy Nominated hit "Bust Your Windows" and continued with her message of female empowerment throughout her set. Sprinkling in spoken word, interpretive dance, and preaching the message of self-love throughout her numerous hits while the crowd sang along.
Tumblr media
Lil Uzi Vert's set channeled the opposite (but still incredible) energy. With Lamborghinis on stage and a light show for the ages, the crowd could not have been more energized. Carrying them through the set with hits such as "The Way Life Goes" and "XO Tour Llif3", they closed out their set with the classics "7AM" and "Final Fantasy."
Tumblr media
Closing out day one was headliner Tyler the Creator. Known for his creative energy and style, Tyler opened his performance stating that the crowd better be ready to watch him "prance around in his loafers for an hour." Which... is exactly what he did. Just while maintaining his impeccable stage presence, performing his catchy hits such as "WusYaName" and "CORSO."
Tumblr media
Day two of the festival was a Latinx dance party from start to finish – but all leading up to headliner Puerto Rican mega-star Bad Bunny, whose crowds came in droves from miles away to see perform live.
Tumblr media
Newcomer Tate McRae performed earlier in the evening, having the crowd completely enamored by her pop-hits. McRae's ability to take over the stage with her catchy songs and dance moves will give her the momentum necessary to gain recognition within the industry – having gotten her start on So You Think You Can Dance many years ago.
Tumblr media
Performances from Colombian singer Ryan Castro, Snoh Aalegra, a Swedish R&B singer from Los Angeles and up and coming West Philly artist Armani White filled out the rest of day two and drew full crowds – knowing every word to every song being performed.
Leading up to the long-awaited moment of Bad Bunny appearing on the main stage, Nigerian pop star Burna Boy dominated the stage with his Afropop beats and electric presence – well deserving of the spot of opening act for the top streamed artist in the world.
Tumblr media
The time had finally come for the sensation that is Bad Bunny, and he certainly lived up to the hype. When he entered the beach themed set, lounging on a chair as if he were on vacation, the crowd of thousands erupted. With Puerto Rican flags in the air and every word to every song being sung in unison – a dance party unlike any other erupted on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, commencing a weekend filled with multicultural vision of "Made in America" that we'd be lucky to see again.

24 Hours in Philadelphia
I spent one day in Philly, and was able to "check off boxes" with a little of everything that might be viewed as mandatory. The day started et Elfreth's Alley, which was like stepping into a time warp back to the 1700's. This well preserved gem is a row of Georgian and Federal style houses dating from 1720 to 1836. Unlike the next two sites, there are no security lines and minimal people (though I was there at 8am).
Next up is the Liberty Bell, which was cast in 1752 and hung in the steeple of Independence Hall (the old Pennsylvania State House). To avoid long lines, I recommend getting there 20 mins before 9am opening. There are various displays describing the history and the famous crack, all leading to the bell itself right at the exit door.
Next door to Liberty Bell is Independence Hall (advance ticket is needed, book online. Independence Hall is where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution was debated and signed. It is a half hour tour, and the lecture was informative (I had no idea it was little known Richard Henry Lee who first suggested we break off from Great Britain). After this, the nearby National Constitution Center is worth checking out (it's free and no security lines).
Next, head east on Market Street towards City Hall, and make a right at 10th to walk through the Chinatown Gates. After checking out Chinatown, head back to Market Street, past City Hall, and get onto Benjamin Franklin Parkway for a tree shades walk towards Logan Square, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the famous Rocky Steps from the movie. A photo opp statue of Rocky is at the bottom, and there will probably be a line of tourists waiting to have a pic with him, but it moves fast.
This next site is not for everyone. If you're a fan of creepy abandoned places, check out the Eastern State Penitentiary, a short walk from the museum. At the time it was built in 1829, it was the largest and most expensive public building in the US. Numerous paranormal shows have investigated and found activity and apparitions. It's a huge complex to explore, and it's hub-and-spoke structure inspired the design of hundreds of prisons.
Philly would not be complete without a cheesesteak sandwich, and while Pat and Geno's get all the attention, I read Angelo's is the best. But being a tourist, visiting the Pat and Geno rivalry, is kind of a must. It's a three mile walk through various hoods from the penitentiary or the museum, so uber/taxi might be calling for this stop. Nearby is both Little Italy and the Latin area.
I've been to numerous baseball parks, and the Phillies park (currently Citizen's Bank Park) ranks above average, with a fun open plaza area with food court behind centerfield, so that's a great option for the night. As a lot of this walking tour covered US History, it should be mentioned here that the Phillies (1883) are the oldest "single name, single location" team in professional sports. There are other franchises that are older, but they either went through a name change or moved cities (or both).

We go to Independence Hall and take the tour.

The guide is excellent. He knows his history, anecdotes, details about each of the signers involved, as well as the general sense of the time. As in some of the other historic places we’ve visited, there is a sense of connection with the history and ideals forged in these places.

We visit the Liberty Bell, which is just across the street in its own monument structure.

We then take the metro to the Philadelphia City Hall, which is enormous,

and then Love Park.

Legs and feet sore, we return to the hotel, but stop and take a tour of the graveyard where Ben Franklin was buried.

Then we head over to Reading Terminal Market, an enclosed marketplace very similar to our DTLA central market, where I got a Pastrami from Hershel’s, and then cannoli for dessert.
