President Rev. Dr. Minister William Richard Tolbert Jr. (May 13, 1913 - April 12, 1980) was the twentieth president of Liberia (1971-80) when he was killed in a coup led by Liberian Army Sergeant Samuel Doe. He was elected vice president to President William Tubman (1952-71).

He was born in Bensonville, Montserrado County, Liberia, the grandson of a former American enslaved, who immigrated to Liberia in the Liberia Exodus. His father, William R. Tolbert Sr., had more than twenty children which made the family one of the largest Americo-Liberian families in Liberia. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Liberia. He married Victoria A. Hoff with whom he had eight children.

He was a Baptist minister and the first African to serve as president of the Baptist World Alliance. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Grand Master of the Masonic Order of Liberia.

His government was criticized for failing to address the deep economic disparities between the Americo-Liberians who had dominated the country since independence in 1847, and the various indigenous ethnic groups that comprised over 80 percent of the population. He was a member of one of the most influential and affluent Americo-Liberian families and appointed his brothers and cousins to key government positions.

He abandoned Tubman’s pro-West foreign policy, establishing diplomatic relations with communist nations like the Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China, Cuba, and several Eastern Bloc countries. He severed ties with Israel during the Yom Kippur War in October 1973 when he spoke favorite of the Palestinian people. He was chairman of the Organization of African Unity (1979-80). His credibility was damaged by what became known as the Rice Riots, the first widespread violence in the nation’s history.

Chicago Union Station, Part One

Here is a Milwaukee Road commuter train, at what I’m assuming is Chicago Union Station. We see here a couple of interesting things here: the locomotive is an F40C, of which not many were built (fifteen), as well as a Northern Pacific sleeping car, part of what I assume to be an Amtrak train of BN ilk. (I guess trains with rainbow colors could still be seen in 1975, unless this was some kind of business train.)

More assumptions on my part: I gather that this locomotive was developed along side that of the F40PH, or just prior to that much more successful four-axle design. (I recall seeing those units, brand spanking new, in 1976 or so.) This particular locomotive was built in April of 1974.

So, not a great photograph to be sure, but fun to lock down some details of the equipment I had not noticed at the time. I had just turned 15 and was on a trip to the Windy City for the first time.

The hole

The family moves to Bensonville. Dane (the son) is upset with the constant changes of address. The two sons befriend their next door neighbour. Julie and the two brothers find a bottomless hole in the basement in their house which is locked with several padlocks. They take the locks off and they are haunted by their darkest fears, they end up believing that the hole might be a gateway to hell.

I really like the idea that they have to face their own fears because it kind of shows you shouldn't touch or isn't really yours and because they opened that hole they paid for it. I really like how dark this movie is it gives a bit of feaf just watching it and imagining it should be pretty difficult to face your fears.

Lucas which is the little brother his fears are clowns and he discovers a jester puppet on his bed, as well as other locations. The Jester was following him. 

This ends up being a normal fear when it comes to little kids, and it must be terrifying facing one of your biggest fears when you a child.

As we can see the clown looks terrifying, so for a child to see that is very impressing for them to face this ugly fear.

I really like how they made the clown scary, I like how creepy the smile actually is and small the pupils are.

Dane fears has to do with his father, because his father used to be very abusive this is where the shadowy figures of a large man come from. 

Julie the neighbour, she has a fear that surrounds with regret and guilt so she begins to see an injured girl who bleeds from her eyes.

What is your age, gender, and nationality? I’m 68 years old, female, and Liberian.

Where did you migrate from? (immigration story) Liberia.

What were your main reasons for emigrating from _____ to The United States of America? The opportunity that the US has to offer. (The workforce specifically).

What push and pull factors were involved in your decision to immigrate? Rather than the opportunity the US workforce has to provide, the political climate was very poor and I didn’t feel comfortable anymore living in Liberia.

Did you experience any bridges or barriers in the process? Luckily no, I did not get deported yet it was a big risk taking the step to get here. Additionally, getting my citizenship was hard.

What other factors influenced your experience as immigrants? N/A.

For the chapter 13 fieldwork assignment, I interviewed Aretha Carneh, my friend Jeradine Jerry’s grandmother. She is a 68 year old immigrant from Liberia. Specifically, she grew up in Bensonville, Liberia. Bensonville serves as the capital of Montserrado County and is the commercial center for the agricultural area surrounding it. Aretha started her emigrating journey in 1980, when she was only 26. Aretha’s main purpose for emigrating from Liberia to the United States of America was to obtain the American Dream and obtain new opportunities granted by the US. Coming from a poor city, Aretha hoped to find a well paying job to sustain a better life in America for herself and future family. She notably stated, “I didn’t feel comfortable anymore living in Liberia,” during our brief interview. Fortunately for her journey here, she did not face any bridges or barriers in the process of emigrating to our country, yet she mentioned that obtaining proper citizenship was a little bit difficult for her. Learning English was a crucial part in her struggle to adapt to the US. Reflecting on what we’ve learned in this chapter, Aretha’s push and pulls were economic struggles. Her finding a sustaining job in the US makes her a labor immigrant.
