The worst outbreak of eastern equine encephalitis since U.S. health officials began monitoring the mosquito-borne disease 15 years ago is prompting aerial bug spraying and dire warnings to avoid the biting insects well into fall. As of October 1, 31 cases — including nine deaths — have been reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Known as EEE or Triple-E for short, the incurable brain infection is still relatively rare — there have been only 103 reported infections in the United States in the past decade. Only five percent of people bitten by an infected mosquito will develop the disease. But about a third of EEE patients die, and many who survive experience permanent neurological problems.
Science News spoke with several researchers about how the virus spreads, and possible factors that might be contributing to the recent surge in cases.
“We don’t know some of the basic details about these [mosquito-transmitted] diseases, unfortunately,” says pathobiologist Stephen Higgs, director of the Biosecurity Research Institute at Kansas State University in Manhattan. “The ideal is to anticipate outbreaks, which is very, very difficult. But we need to be prepared for an outbreak when it comes.”
How does the virus spread?
The virus that causes eastern equine encephalitis is initially carried by Culiseta melanura mosquitoes, which feed on blood from birds (SN: 4/9/19) and rarely bite humans. However, other mosquito species, including Aedes mosquitoes, can pick the virus up from infected birds and then spread the virus to humans and other mammals, including horses — which is how EEE originally got its name.
When an infected mosquito bites a person, the insect spits a solution of substances that help prevent blood from clotting, making it easier to suck blood. “That’s why you might have that little red bump — because it’s spitting into you,” Higgs says. “If there are viruses in those salivary glands as it’s spitting, it will also spit virus into you.”
________________________________________________________________
Lion’s share
About 30 percent of the 103 eastern equine encephalitis cases recorded in the last decade have occurred in 2019. On average, there are about seven human cases of EEE in the United States each year.
CREDIT: ARBONET, ARBOVIRAL DISEASES BRANCH, CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION
What are the symptoms?
Infected patients may first experience a fever, headache, chills or muscle and bone pain. If the virus moves to the central nervous system, it can cause encephalitis, or swelling of the brain. With no cure for EEE, doctors can only treat the symptoms and help to boost a patient’s immune response to the infection.
Where are people getting infected?
The northeastern United States has been most affected by the disease, along with states along U.S. Gulf Coast and in the Great Lakes region. These states tend to have humid forests and swampy areas where mosquitoes like to breed.
Of the 31 cases confirmed as of October 1, 12 have been in Massachusetts, nine in Michigan, three in New Jersey, three in Rhode Island, two in Connecticut, one in North Carolina and one in Tennessee, according to CDC spokeswoman Maggie Silver. At least nine people have died, according to the CDC’s Oct. 1 tally.
“We’ve got cases in states which have really not typically had human cases,” including Tennessee, Higgs says. And Connecticut, with two new cases, had only seen one other case, in 2013. Virus also has been detected in 2019 in mosquitoes in several states — including Maine, New York and Louisiana – that have not had human cases this year.
________________________________________________________________
On the map
The eastern equine encephalitis virus has infected humans in 22 U.S. states, mostly around the Gulf coast, in the Great Lakes region and along the Atlantic coast. In 2019, Tennessee became the 22nd state to record a case.
CREDIT: ARBONET, ARBOVIRAL DISEASES BRANCH, CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION
What’s causing this spike in EEE cases?
Researchers aren’t sure, but suggest a combination of factors could be to blame. Also unclear is whether the current disease surge is an anomaly, or if the country might see higher numbers of cases in future years as well.
“With any mosquito-borne disease, it’s cyclical,” says Silver. The number of cases rises in summer, when mosquito populations swell, and declines as temperatures drop and frost kills off the adult insects.
Conditions that encourage mosquitoes to proliferate can increase the disease risk, such as warmer temperatures (SN: 3/13/12). “One of the reasons we’re seeing outbreak cycles more frequently is probably related to the fact that the mosquito breeding season is longer now,” says Catherine Brown, state epidemiologist with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in Boston. That’s cause for concern, given that climate change is pushing average temperatures up across the globe (SN: 7/1/19).
Rainfall can also have an effect. Because mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, small pockets of undisturbed water are crucial for breeding. And lots of rain means more such breeding grounds, which could “set up the stage for us to have very large mosquito populations,” Brown says.
What can people do to protect themselves?
The best way to prevent a Triple-E infection is to avoid being bitten by a mosquito in the first place. The CDC recommends using insect repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants and keeping doors and windows closed. People also can make sure there is no standing water around their homes, and avoid other breeding areas such as swamps at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
Some counties in affected states including Massachusetts have begun spraying against mosquitoes. “Aerial spraying is a way to cover large geographic areas in a relatively efficient way,” Brown says. But it can’t eliminate the EEE infection risk or get rid of all mosquitoes. “It’s not a magic bullet.”

The 10 Best Flea and Tick Collars for Dogs
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Flea-infested-itchy-dog-scratching-why-choose-dog-collar.jpg
Recently, I’ve had the joy to watch one of my best friends adopt her own puppy and bring him home.
She’d never owned her own dog before, so it was great to watch her experience all of his first milestones.
Some were more enjoyable than others, but there are always a few firsts that dog owners have to experience.
The night she discovered tiny black bugs in his soft puppy fur, she panicked and didn’t know what to do.
She didn’t have the budget to take him to the vet and buy a prescription just yet, so she needed a cheaper but still effective solution.
I told her to turn to flea collars and she was not disappointed.
Here are the best flea collars for dogs that I’d recommend to any dog owner looking for an easy flea solution.
How Flea Collars Work
Depending on the type of flea collar you buy, the ingredients will be different but still work the same way.
Within the first 24 hours of the flea collar being worn by your dog, the ingredients in the collar will slowly disperse through your dog’s fur.
As these ingredients are soaked into your dog’s skin, the more protected they are from fleas and ticks.
The ingredients can both kill flea infestations and prevent future ones, depending on the purpose of the flea collar.
Types of Flea Collars
Those who have only ever trusted a flea medication for their dog may be wondering how they work.
There are two types of flea collars on the market that are effective, so you can choose from either one.
Unless you already know that your dog has skin allergies or sensitivities, you may not find out that they’re better with one kind of flea collar over another until you try them both out.
Chemical Flea Collars
The first is a chemical flea collar.
It’s made with an insecticide[1] that slowly releases into your dog’s fur, which ends the life cycle of the fleas. They can kills eggs, larvae and even adult fleas.
Some chemical flea collars may contain multiple insecticides for the most powerful infestations, but they’ll all be tested before being sold to the public.
All-Natural Flea Collars
Make sure to discuss the following options with your canine companion to see which they prefer
The other kind of collar is the all-natural flea collar.
It uses only natural ingredients[2] to kill and deter fleas, like citronella and other oils.
Fleas get turned away by the smell of the ingredients if they aren’t killed off immediately, but dogs and humans won’t be bothered by it.
Best Flea Collars
There are a few varying factors that will affect which dog collar you buy for your dog.
Age and weight are some of them, but size is one of the most important.
Check out these flea collar superlatives by size that should help you figure out what to get.

My Top Pick
Bayer Seresto Flea and Tick Collar
While there are tons of flea collars out there to choose from, the one I’ve seen work on a consistent basis is the Seresto collar by Bayer.
Click the image for more info
Overview
It’s made for dogs of all sizes and ages, so you don’t need to worry about the specifics.
Vets also commonly recommend this collar because it’s powerful in the fight against fleas without being a major irritant to your dog’s skin.
You can get it at almost any pet supply store or online.
What I Liked
Dog owners looking for the most effective flea and tick collar should turn to Seresto.
When you buy a Seresto product, you’re getting a collar that stops fleas in their tracks. It kills them before they lay eggs and repels any other fleas or ticks from joining the party.
It’s not greasy and has no odor, so it’s pleasant for humans to be around when your dog wants to cuddle.
Additionally, Seresto collars can help symptoms of sarcastic mange, which sometimes goes hand in hand with flea outbreaks[3].
Mites are friends of fleas, and they can cause mange when they burrow under your dog’s skin.
What I Didn’t Like
There’s not much to not like about the Seresto collar.
If your dog doesn’t have any immediate allergic reactions to wearing it, it does its job well and helps with additional issues like mange.
Final Thoughts
The Seresto collar is an easy way to cover all your dog’s bases, which is why it’s trusted by so many dog owners around the world.
You won’t be taking much of a gamble by trying this collar out on your dog.
You can find a more in-depth review of the Bayer Seresto collar here.

Small dog owners probably spend their time looking for a collar that’s both the right size and the right price.
Paying a huge price for such a small collar can feel like a rip off, but you don’t have to sacrifice your budget to find something that works when there’s the Hartz Ultraguard Flea and Tick collar.
Click the image for more info
What I Liked
This flea collar usually sold in a pack of two for around or less than ten dollars, depending on where you shop.
Anything that helps out my budget is a winner for me.
Even though your dog only needs one collar at a time, they aren’t meant to last forever.
A pack of two will save you time and money in the future when the collar needs to be replaced.
This chemical collar is water resistant too[4], so your dog can run through a sprinkler and not ruin the collar.
Just make sure to remove it before they take a bath or go swimming.
Being dunked continuously in water will make the chemicals release faster, wasting the active ingredients that should extend for months at a time.

What I Didn’t Like
I’m not a huge fan of the fact that puppies younger than 12 weeks old can’t wear this collar.
They won’t be socializing much anyway, since they’ll be catching up on their vaccinations, but they can still get fleas and ticks when they go outside during potty training.
Dog parents shouldn’t feel like their only option is to buy the more expensive oral medication.
Final Thoughts
I love that this collar can be bought in a pack of two.
Most flea collars are only sold individually, but I like that you can stock up with Hartz Ultraguard.
Even though young puppies can’t wear the collar, it’s still a great option for smaller dogs looking for flea and tick protection.

Best Flea Collar for Medium Dogs
Rolf Club 3D Flea Collar
Medium dogs may have the easiest time finding a collar that fits, especially since Rolf Club makes their 3D Flea Collar.
Click the image for more info
What I Liked
The 3D collar is specifically designed to by hypoallergenic, so your dog can still wear it if their skin normally reacts to things like different shampoos or sprays.
It’s also an odorless way to protect your dog from mosquitoes and lice, in addition to fleas.
Some spot-on flea treatments leave an unpleasant odor after application, which can stick around for a day or two.
This collar is an easy way to avoid that without compromising on your dog’s flea protection.
What I Didn’t Like
Some owners have reported that the collar may slip off of your dog, but I believe that’s due to either getting the wrong size or not securing it correctly.
Make sure to read the packaging so you put it on your dog the right way, since not all flea collars are designed to be identical.
Final Thoughts
Averaging around $30, it’s a reasonable price to pay for such great canine protection.
You’ll only have to replace the Rolf Club 3D flea collar twice a year, which is still much more affordable than oral or spot-on medication.

Best Flea Collar for Large Dogs
Bayer Flea and Tick Collar Again
Large dogs require a flea collar that has a bit of extra strength, since there’s so much surface area to cover. Bayer Animal Health will keep your dog safe with the Seresto Flea and Tick Collar.
Click the image for more info
What I Liked
Any large breed dog seven weeks or older can wear this collar, so your dog can grow up with the same product.
The Seresto collar also has a lower concentration of active chemical ingredients, so they won’t irritate the skin while they release slowly over time.
Your dog will be protected for up to eight months while wearing this non-greasy, odorless collar.
What I Didn’t Like
There’s not much to be said regarding complaints with the Seresto collar.
There are only a few rare cases where the collar didn’t help end a flea infestation, which may be related to the lower concentration of active ingredients.
Final Thoughts
The Seresto collar is one of the biggest sellers in the dog flea collar market, especially for big dogs.
If you haven’t tried a flea collar on your dog before, this may be the collar that gets recommended to you the most by friends and your dog’s vet.

Safest Flea Collar
Arava Flea and Tick Prevention collar
Click the image for more info
Chemical flea collars are out on the market because they’ve been tested and proven to be safe for dogs to wear.
Still, dog owners can feel uncomfortable when the word “chemicals” is mentioned.
That’s completely understandable, which is why natural flea collars like the Arava Flea and Tick Prevention collar have a huge presence in the flea collar market.
What I Liked
The all-natural ingredients are definitely a bonus.
I would never have to worry about them bothering Maggie’s skin, which is even more difficult when you have a dog with thick fur.
You can trust the natural herbs and essential oils that make this a powerful collar in the fight against fleas and ticks.
What I Didn’t Like
Some consumers have made it clear that this collar didn’t do much to end flea infestations that had become pretty bad.
If your dog is suffering from a long-term flea problem, you’ll want to go with a collar that has more powerful ingredients.
Or a short term oral solution may be what’s right, and then you can get the Arava collar for your dog to wear once their coat is back to normal.
Final Thoughts
I still stand by the fact that all-natural collars can be just as effective as chemical collars.
The Arava collar proves this, since it’s trusted by so many dog owners to protect their dogs for months at a time.

Best Flea Collar for Puppies
Bayer Seresto Flea and Tick Collar Once More
Buying a flea collar for a puppy is tricky.
Most collars won’t be safe for a puppy to wear, because of the chemicals they contain.
That’s why so many new puppy parents turn to the Seresto flea collar for help.
Click the image for more-ah, you know the drill by now!
What I Liked
Depending on the puppy’s age, their liver may not be fully developed to process out chemicals.
Vets may recommended oral flea medication at a lower dose, but there’s also the Seresto flea collar if that’s what you’d prefer to use for your dog’s flea protection.
Many vets recommend that puppies as young as seven weeks old wear the Seresto flea collar[5].
It’s safe for young puppies because it’s designed to be tough on ticks and fleas without introducing anything a young puppy may not be able to process through their digestive tract.
What I Didn’t Like
It’s disappointing that something as well known as the Seresto collar isn’t also made with all-natural ingredients.
Still, dogs wear the Seresto collar all the time and don’t experience any bad side effects, so it’s unlikely that your puppy will be any different.
Final Thoughts
It’s hard to find a flea collar for puppies, but the Seresto flea and tick collar makes it easy to protect your pup.
Starting your puppy with a Seresto collar could mean that they wear the Seresto brand as they grow up, which is easier for everyone involved.

Best Flea Collar for Older Dogs
Lucky Pluto Flea Collar
As dogs age, they have different health issues to keep in mind when purchasing something for them like the Lucky Pluto flea collar.
Click the image for more info
What I Liked
In general, it’s a good idea to not give a dog a flea collar when they have skin lesions[6], which can occur more easily with older dogs.
It’s safer to stick with a flea collar that uses all natural ingredients so it’s irritant free.
Lucky Pluto’s flea collar does just that, while also being allergen-free.
For up to eight months, your senior canine will be protected from fleas and ticks, even if they go for a swim or take a bath.
What I Didn’t Like
It’s a little disappointing whenever a flea collar is water resistant and not waterproof, which is the case for Lucky Pluto.
It’ll take some time to get used to removing the collar every time your dog bathes or goes for a swim, but it’s a small price to pay for effective flea treatment.
Final Thoughts
Older dogs require different precautions than younger dogs, which is why you want to get them the safest collar.
The Lucky Pluto collar won’t let your dog down, so its a safe option to try out on older dogs.

Best All-Natural Collar
Dr. Bob Goldstein Nature’s Protection Flea and Tick Collar
When you’re trusting an herbal collar with your dog’s health, you’re going to want to get the best in the business.
That’s why you should trust Dr. Bob Goldstein Nature’s Protection flea and tick collar.
What I Liked
Click the image for more info
This collar uses three natural ingredients to send ticks and fleas running.
Almond oil, peppermint oil, and Virginia cedar oil are all non-toxic ingredients that help in more ways than one.
They have antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties, while also containing an odor that repels fleas.
All you’ll smell is a minty refreshing scent in your dog’s fur, which they may enjoy as well.
What I Didn’t Like
The only annoying feature of this collar is that it has to be replaced every three months.
While it’s relatively inexpensive, it’s another thing to add to your busy schedule.
Keep that in mind before purchasing, if you don’t want to frequently replace your dog’s collar.
Final Thoughts
As far as all-natural collars go, Dr. Bob Goldstein’s Nature’s Protection ranks above them all.
The three main ingredients take care of fleas and ticks fast, which may be worth replacing it every three months for some dog owners.

Best Vet Recommended Collar
Mozart’s Flea and Tick Prevention Collar
Your dog’s vet will know the best way for them to be treated if they have a flea infestation, but vets also recommend that Mozart’s flea and tick prevention collar be used as a precaution when your dog doesn’t have fleas.
Click the image for more info
What I Liked
Mozart’s flea and tick prevention collar is the number one preventative collar that vets recommend.
It uses all natural ingredients like cinnamon oil, clove oil, and lemongrass oil along with citronella and peppermint to keep bugs away.
It will also protect your dog for up to six months.
While that’s slightly shorter than other flea collars, this collar option is much more budget friendly, which is another reason why vets recommend it to so many dog owners.
What I Didn’t Like
A few owners have reported online that the scent from the collar can be quite strong when it’s fresh out of its packaging.
Prepare to let it air out for a few hours before putting it on your dog to help with the smell.
Another important factor for dog owners to consider is that large dogs with thick coats haven’t had as much success with this collar as short haired dogs.
Final Thoughts
There’s no doubting the effectiveness of this all-natural collar, but it may not be for every dog.
If your dog doesn’t see any flea or tick relief within the first 24 hours of wearing the Mozart collar, they may need one that uses strong chemicals instead.

What I Liked

At the end of six months, replace it with a new collar and your dog will be good to go.
It’s a straightforward collar, so it’s easy for people who are new to flea collars to use correctly on their dog.
What I Didn’t Like
For some reason, chihuahuas and other tiny dogs tend to react poorly to this collar.
So, avoid the PetArmor collar if you have a very small dog!

If you don’t have a chihuahua or other tiny dog, the PetArmor collar will take care of your dog’s flea problem quickly and easily.

Best Eight Month Collar
Joeor Prolonged Flea and Tick Collar
There are many reasons why an eight month flea collar is more appealing to dog owners than a six month collar.
You may have a tight budget to work with or you may not want to remember to replace the collar more than once a year.
If you’re looking for the best eight month collar, look no further than the Joeor Prolonged flea and tick collar.
What I Liked
Click the image for more info
This collar repels ticks, fleas, and even mosquitoes during all life stages.
That’s extra pest protection without any extra steps for you to remember to do every month.
Compared to other rigid flea collars, the Joeor collar is also soft and easy to buckle into place.
This may be related to what it’s made out of. It also uses mostly all-natural ingredients, so it’s safer for dogs with sensitive skin to wear.
What I Didn’t Like
The citronella scent of this collar can be overpowering when it’s first used, so prepare yourself for the scent if you decide to buy it for your dog.
Final Thoughts
It’s nice when you can put a flea collar on your dog and not have to worry about replacing it more than once a year.
The Joeor collar is a safe and effective way to keep pests away from your dog, if you don’t mind the citronella smell that will follow your dog around for a bit after they first start wearing it.

Best Long Term Collar
TevraPet Proact Flea and Tick Collar
Don’t want to keep track of how many months your dog has been using their flea collar? Try out a year long, long term collar like the TevraPet Proact flea and tick collar.
What I Liked
Click the image for more info
The TervaPet collar is meant to be used for up to twelve months at a time, so it’s waterproof and slowly releases continuous protection over time.
Dogs twelve weeks and older can use it, so younger puppies can grow up with this collar.
If your dog is smaller, the collar can easily be cut to fit your dog’s neck perfectly.
Another great feature?
It’s commonly sold in packs of two, both online and in stores. For an average of $30, you could get two years of pest protection for your dog.
What I Didn’t Like
A general issue that comes with long term collars is that pet parents stop checking their dog for fleas and ticks regularly when their dog is wearing the collar.
At first, that may be fine, but the collar may become less effective over time.
Dunking the collar in water is one of the easiest ways to make it less effective, so just remember to check your dog regularly even if they have a long term flea and tick collar on.
Final Thoughts
It’s great that pet parents have the option to buy long term flea collars for their dogs, but it doesn’t mean you should stop being proactive
If your dog wears a collar like the TevraPet collar and you’re also brushing them to check for bugs, they’re bound to be safe all year round.

How to Use a Flea Collar Effectively
It’s important for dog owners to know that different flea collars may come with slightly different instructions.
If you want to be sure that you’re using the flea collar effectively, read the back of the packaging that you bought.
Still, there are a few general steps that flea collars require in order to be used.
Make sure you do these following things so your dog is protected from pests.
Unroll and Stretch It
Most flea collars will be rolled up and then packaged.
Once you unroll the collar and stretch it out, the main ingredients will be activated.
You may even see a white powder around the collar after stretching it. That just means the ingredients are working.
Fit the Collar
Next, you can fit the collar around your dogs neck.
There should be two finger spaces between your dog’s neck and the collar for a comfortable fit.
There may be an excess length of collar left after the fitting, which can easily be cut off.
Leave at least an inch or two of extra collar in case it needs to be loosened.
Watch for Skin Irritation
If your dog start scratching at their neck after they’ve worn the collar for a few hours, inspect their skin.
They may have slight skin irritation if the collar is too tight.
Use the extra collar length to loosen it to the appropriate size if needed.
Conclusion
The flea collar you eventually purchase for your dog will depend on many varying factors.
You have to consider if your dog already has fleas or if the collar will be mainly for preventing infestations.
You’ll also have to think about things like your dog’s age, size, and if they have any allergies or skin sensitivities.
Think also about what each flea collar is made out of, so you’re comfortable with what your dog will be wearing.
It sounds like a lot to keep in mind, but your preferences will be second nature once you start reading through your options.
Test out different flea collars to see which ones are the most effective for your dog, so you don’t have to worry about fleas and ticks again.
FAQs
Do Flea Collars Work?
Yes, flea collars work by using one of two methods.
The first is by repelling fleas and ticks by emitting a gas they can’t stand.
If they bite your dog, the gas will also kill them.
The second method is for a flea collar to release active ingredients slowly over time.
These collars may or may not leave a greasy residue in your dog’s fur, depending on the brand.
How Long Does It Take for a Flea Collar to Work?
Most flea collars will begin to work immediately, but the time it takes for them to reach their full effectiveness differs.
Some collars will begin to work within minutes, while others require a few hours.
At most, you can expect a flea collar to begin taking effect within 24 hours of placement.
If there are still fleas and ticks on your dog after that, it may be time to switch to a new brand.
Are Flea Collars Safe?
Some dog owners worry that flea collars aren’t safe because they contain chemicals that kill fleas and ticks.
While the initial thought of chemicals in your dog’s fur may be concerning, all flea collars are tested for safety before being sold.
The only way a flea collar may not be the safest option for your dog is if they have an allergic reaction to the chemicals used.
If that happens, you may want to switch your dog over to an all-natural flea collar.
Do Flea Collars Have Side Effects?
Flea collars are one of the most common ways dog owners protect their dogs against fleas and ticks.
Because they’re so widely used, they’re recommended as a safe flea and tick alternative to dog owners who don’t want to use oral or spot-on treatments.
However, some side effects may still occur in some dogs.
Dogs with sensitive skin may start scratching at their collar and continue the scratching for hours on end after it’s clipped on.
Dogs may also deal with redness of the skin and possible hair loss around the collar if they’re irritated by the collar’s ingredients or allergic to it[7].
All-natural flea collar alternatives are an allergen-free alternative for dogs who can’t use a traditional flea collar.

Siquijor 2019
Tada!!! After 7 (??) years, I am back doing my first love - blogging. So for my first entry (again), I wanna share with you my solo travel adventure to Isla de Fuego aka Siquijor Island. It’s my 2nd solo travel for this year (6th overall) and I must say it is one of my favorites! (PS all photos are mine unless stated otherwise hehe). Btw I went to Siquijor June 16-18, 2019. All currencies stated are in Philippine Pesos
HOW DID I GET THERE?

Since I am always on the look out for piso fares, I got my roundtrip tickets Manila-Dumaguete-Manila for roughly 1,600.00 during Cebu Pacific’s snap sale (99.00 base fare). Not bad.
From Dumaguete airport, there are tricycles/habal habals (single motorcycles) that can take you to Dumaguete Port. If you don’t have that much of luggage with you (or if you are still not so sure on your haggling skills), it’s best that you find your preferred mode of transportation OUTSIDE of the airport since the drivers on the airport tend to overcharge.
Okay so once you have hailed a driver, tell him to drop you off at the ticketing counter of your preferred ferry going to Siquijor, So in my case, I told the habal to drop me off at Oceanjet ticketing office. Ticketing office is walking distance from the port entrance. To be on the safe side also, you can purchase your return trip ticket as well to avoid hassle on the day you’re going back to mainland Dumaguete.

<Schedule and ticket price of June 2019>
Oceanjet from Dumaguete port to Siquijor port is roughly 50 mins to 1 hour. Just a reminder: Dumaguete port is really wavy. I don’t get dizzy easily but man Dumaguete port tested me lol. Before stepping inside the port, you need to pay P13.00 (I forgot what is it for lol but there is a window beside the port entrance). The port itself is clean and spacious by the way and there are kiosks there for those who’ll go hungry while waiting for the scheduled boat trips.

Once you arrive at Siquijor Port, there are tricycles/habal habals waiting outside the port. Up to you what you’ll take. Being a solo traveller and having just one backpack, I contracted a habal to take me to my accommodation and tour the whole island. Kuya Elbert (my habal driver/ tour guide. VERY NICE) and I have agreed for P800.00 for a whole island tour plus him bringing me to my accommodation and to the port. I also paid for his lunches and snacks. Kuya Elbert +639068382558

<Arrival at Siquijor Port (the water is so clear that I wanted to jump right in)>

<Outside of Siquijor Port>

WHERE DID I STAY?
I stayed at JJ’s Backpackers Village (As recommended by the British solo traveller I met on Siargao). They have bunk beds there for 400/night. One dorm room contains 6 beds (2 single beds and 2 double deck beds) and a bathroom (decent, clean, well maintained, working flush lol). The hostel also has its own in-house restaurant and bar so there’s no need to worry of going hungry lol. But the real selling point of JJ’s Backpackers is the killer beach front since it is along Solangon Beach. It’s very chill and relaxing that I can just lay in the hammock all day and do nothing kind of vibe.

<Do not disturb mood>

<Dorm room 400/night> PS bring your own padlocks for the lockers.
You may contact them at +639989704452 or go to their Facebook page
WHERE DID I GO?
Siquijor Island is so small that you can tour it in less than a day. There are even some travellers that do daytour and then goes back to Dumaguete. Here are the highlights of my habal tour:
1. SALAGDOONG BEACH

This is where the famous cliffdiving site in Siquijor is located. For those who want that jolt of adrenaline rush on the body, this is your place to go. I chickened out the last minute because the jump site is so high and scary hahaha so I opted to stay on the shore and swim. There is an entrance fee going here (I think 30 pesos but correct me if I am wrong).
2. PALITON BEACH

The beach where you can find the instagram worthy palm tree shots. When I was here, I can’t believe how chill and peaceful it is here. There are also locals who is standing by the famous palm tree that is ready to assist you on your creative instagram photo (just don’t forget to give them a tip - I gave P50.00). My favorite beach of all beaches!! Free entrance!!
3. CAMBUGAHAY FALLS

I fell in love with Cambugahay falls. The water is unbelievably blue like it will take your breath away. So for this destination, Kuya Elbert stayed on the motorcycle parking as there was a designated tour guide going down the falls (it has different levels btw). We went there as early as 7:00AM (normally there is an entrance fee but when we got there, the collector was still not on his post so that means it is FREE again lol). So yeah trying going there early plus also to avoid large crowds as it gets pretty crowded around 9:00 am onwards. So after frolicking in the blue waters and braving the tarzan swing, time to go up again. I gave my guide P100.00 plus I paid the motor parking P10.00
4. CENTURY OLD BALETE TREE AND FISH SPA

I did not try the fish spa since I am a ticklish person but the fishes were big so no thanks lol. The tree looks enchanting tho but I like the one in Baler. There is also a souvenir shop beside it. You can buy shirts, ref magnets, voodoo doll keychains and the infamous love potion in a bottle.

5. HAPITANAN CAFE AND RESTAURANT

I didn’t do the famous broomstick photo because I was not in the mood lol. But I did chill for a little bit on their backyard.
WHERE TO EAT
So for 3 days, this is how I survived lol
DAY 1
Breakfast - Cinnabon sticks and coffee from the airport (<300.00)
Lunch - 2 pcs chicken with rice and bottled water bought from one of the Dumaguete Port kiosk (P80.00)
Dinner - A hearty plate of gnocchi from Dolce Amore. This is the first time I tasted Gnocchi and it was da bomb!!! (plus their homemade chocolate cake and homemade coconut gelato - shared by us 3 roommates). My plate of gnocchi was P180.00 but it was so worth it! The desserts cost were split between us 3. (Spent around 285.00 for my meal)

<Me with my roommates Elo (Brazil - jumper) and Maria (Spain - red top)>
DAY 2
Breakfast - Leftover cinnabon sticks (I still have 4 sticks left lol) plus coconut juice (40.00 for the coconut juice of Kuya Elbert and I)
Lunch - Kuya Elbert and I ate at an eatery at downtown. Hearty lunch for 2 is at P200.00
2 cans of beer - P120.00
Dinner - Beef burger with homemade patties at JJ’s (P180.00)
DAY 3 (I took the first trip of Oceanjet back to Dumaguete 6:00 AM since I have a 10:15am flight back to Manila)
Breakfast - Sansrival Bistro Dumaguete (continental Filipino Breakfast) - (P220.00) *walking distance from Dumaguete port*
Lunch - Since our flight was delayed for 2.5 hours, we had free lunch from Jollibee (FREE)
TAKE NOTE
1. Bring sunblock and cap
2. INSECT REPELLENT IS A MUST. Mosquitoes there are annoying as f*ck. Off lotion will not be enough
3. Always make sure to have your phones and powerbanks fully charged since there are schedules of power interruption on the island.
4. Be friendly to the locals and also to your fellow travellers.
5. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR RUBBISH ALONG THE BEACH. Throw them properly.
To end my post, I won’t be able to give exact amount but I can give you my DIY itinerary. I think 5,000.00 will be enough for 3 days as long as you have prepared your expenses. Let me know if you have questions.
Siquijor became one of my favorite destinations. Mark my words: I will be back!

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes
How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes
We all look forward to the onset of warm weather after a long winter. What we don’t look forward to is the nagging mosquitos who threaten to ruin our outdoor fun.
Those of us who live in Columbia SC have the pleasure of enjoying many months of beautiful, hot weather that extends beyond the official start of fall. Unfortunately, this also means that our mosquito season is longer.
Mosquito pest control is at the top of all our minds the second we see that first itchy bite appears on our skin. Keep reading to learn how to get rid of mosquitoes in and around your home so that you and your family can enjoy the outdoors all summer long.
Mosquito Prevention
When it comes to mosquito pest control, the first thing you need to understand is where and how these pests like to breed and congregate. By identifying and reducing the number of places around your home that they can grow and thrive, you will significantly reduce the number of them lingering around your home and yard.
Mosquitos require only a small amount of standing water to breed. Therefore, reducing or eliminating areas of standing water is your first step in controlling the population.
Dog bowls, bird baths, baby pools-these are all highly attractive to mosquitos. These bugs need only about 10 days to lay their eggs and have them mature into adult insects.
In order to prevent the eggs from having the ability to fully mature, you should plan to tip over and dump out containers of standing water often and refilling them with fresh water if needed.
Additionally, be wary of over-watering your lawn as a perpetually damp, soggy lawn will attract these unsavory pests. Keep your gutters clean and plants and bushes trimmed back and well-groomed.
You can also help to prevent these pests from entering your home by making sure that your screens and windows are sealed and replaced if needed and by adding screen doors to any outside doors to act as a barrier to entry.
Keeping a keen eye on the state of your yard and trimmings will help you to identify and eliminate areas that can attract pests to your home.
Home and Yard Treatments
While there is a lot that can be done to help dissuade pests from breeding in your yard, you’re still likely to experience mosquitoes to some degree around your home.
The best way to combat these pests is with specially designed chemical treatments that are engineered to kill both larvae and adult bugs.

Written by R. Ann Parris on The Prepper Journal.
In the prepper world, we hear “two is one, one is none”. We don’t want to get carried away with it when we’re packing a rucksack, but it provides positive redundancy for our preparations. If something happens to the primary – from a plan to a tangible item – we have a backup right there, already on hand.
There’s a difference between an alternative and a backup, though. It’s subtle, but significant enough to hugely affect how well we navigate upsets.
We see backups in all areas of preparedness and the self-reliant lifestyles many try to cultivate.
If our pressure canner uses rubber rings, we try to keep an extra on hand.
We stock seeds in case we can’t buy more or buy food in a supermarket, and if we’re frugal we stock multiple years’ seeds separately in case there’s a problem with the last-purchased or last-harvested seed supply.
We map out multiple routes for our vehicles, in case one is blocked.
We keep a light and a speed loader, stripper clip, or spare mag with our EDC or creak-in-the-night firearms.
If we’re into tactical load outs, we carry a primary rifle or carbine, with reloads, and have a sidearm on our waist, leg, or chest where it’s handy if our primary runs dry or goes down at a really bad time. I might even have backups for both primary and sidearm back home.
Right There with Backups, is Having alternates
Alternates are somewhat different from “just” a backup. A backup is the same thing, or nearly the same thing, which functions the same way. An alternate is different, largely or entirely.
Following the examples above…
In addition to my pressure canner – and grid-down ways to bring it to and keep it at pressure – I might also make plans to preserve foods by dehydrating, cold smoking, or salt packing.
I might not only have backup seeds, I might have alternates – faster-growing hybrids of the same type, as well as foreign domesticated crops and-or wild edibles.
I might maintain lists of bus and subway/train schedules, stations, and stops, and cash/tokens for them, a bike, and an ATV to get around suburban and rural obstacles. I might also have packs or small carts for my animals and myself so we can flee on foot.
Instead of planning to repel all borders with direct confrontation if our retreat is noticed, we might have made plans to make the house look already-hit, create passive discomforts, make it difficult to reach, and have actual booby traps as our last line.
Instead of a rifle/carbine, some situations might call for me or a partner to carry a shotgun – which are themselves loaded with alternate options.
I might also keep one specifically loaded with rubber shot, rock salt, bean bags, net, or some other less-than-lethal option for chasing pests out of my garden or breaking up a dog fight.
Instead of or with a gun, I might have a souped-up flashlight that functions like a mini baseball bat. Other alternatives to an EDC pistol might be a taser bug, retractable asp, or a coin roll in a hanky.
Alternatives as Well as Backups Apply Across all of Preparedness
If we flip the switch and there’s no power, we might have solar-charged and standard battery lamps to go with candles and oil lamps for light. We might augment solar and standard batteries with hand-cranked radios or lanterns, which can also function as chargers for other battery devices, or have a generator – and, upping the game of alternatives, a gennie that runs on multiple fuels.
We might have squeeze-activated ice packs we can blow a battery-operated fan across to combat heat stress, and plan for canopy beds and grown-up blanket forts to help reduce the amount of heat we need to stay warm.
We might have dark bags and solar ovens, propane stoves and grills, and various candle stoves for cooking.
We might have Pepto for whatever our water and food storage does to our guts, Imodium and Dulcolax as a backup, as well as some alternative maintenance and treatments for minor cases like prunes, tea/coffee, and dates, and mild farina/rice cereals, applesauce, and protein drink mix.
In our bags, vehicles, and homes we store not only water that’s ready to consume, but also chemical treatments and filters, and vessels we can fill if our primary springs a leak.
Super Sources
Hunting is one area ripe with alternatives for our plans and supplies. There’s already wide evidence and experience for us to weigh according to our own priorities, with gear and techniques full of alternatives just waiting to redeploy by preppers.
There’s that trusty standard shotgun, and all its options, but many hunters have a deer or pig rifle – sometimes instead, but regularly in addition to that shotgun.
Some have both a short, heavy-hitting, stable-flight brush gun and something designed to reach out across ridges, prairies, desert, or pasture. Others choose middle-road calibers that offer cartridge variety to cover multiple bases.
Some have a bow or crossbow for archery seasons. Others hunt very effectively with rim fires and airguns.
Some of those give us alternatives to big booms with a silent, effective killer and all the benefits they can have for a homesteader, hunter, and anyone else trying to avoid attention. Some give us alternatives to a shoulder-thumping Recoil Beast or expensive-ammo eater, giving us options for training and limited shooters.
Some use a handgun as primary for hunts, scoped or iron sights, both small game and large. Some carry a finishing gun along with their primary hunting tool.
Others carry close-range handguns or super-shorty shotguns for bears or self-defense – to include other outdoors-men like fishermen, bikers, hikers, and campers.
Those Outdoors Hobbyists, too, Give us Backups and Alternatives we can Apply
Some gear serves as-is, not only for wilderness bug-outs and survival, but any power-outage and grid-down or off-grid situation. Some gear is seen re-purposed by other interest groups as often as it is in its original field, or is used as an alternative until a field catches up to the interest.
BMX elbow and knee pads, rappelling helmets, and motorcycle knuckle-guard gloves improved tactical load outs, with official military gear catching up, not leading the way. It’s not singular (sadly). Personally acquired “other” gear and tactics are pretty commonly deployed long before it becomes regular issue.
We also see a lot of crossover in foods. Military to camping/backpacking to endurance athletes, one innovates and the others apply it. Then they’re catching up and expanding, or innovating anew, and it goes back the other way.
Preppers with crossover interests apply them, and they gain increased attention within that fold, further increasing the backups and alternatives we can apply. (Fad foods, too.)
It goes far beyond gunners and rations, though.
Bivy sleepers of both the sleeping bag and mini pup-tent types can offer us an alternative to more common tents and tarps shelters, or create additional layers of insulation and moisture protection when combined with them – or create even more layers of insulation and warmth indoors.
Netted hammocks and bug net around our hats help keep mosquitoes and biting flies at bay – in the garden and for front-porch sleeping in hot weather as well as out on the water or trails. Those mesh shields crossover with hunters’ turkey and duck mesh for the face and head.
Hunter’s camo options give us an alternative to military patterns, sweltering heat or frigid cold, across a wide variety of terrains.
Increased interest from outdoors types means pack rafts and inflatable kayaks (it’s a canoe) are much more compact, reliable, and affordable now.
They give us vehicle and home options for all sorts of things, be it a fishing platform, icy-pond and deep-mud rescue platform, dryer (-er, not dry) crossing of waterways, and options if we’re caught in high water from a hurricane, main break, dam spillway, or some other flood.
That gives us one more way to keep loved ones safe and get them out of harm’s way across a wide array of emergencies.
Rain gear, protective gear for bikes and ATV’ers, lightweight and compact tools of all sorts, off-roading vehicle upgrades, compact fishing kits, big-wheeled bikes and lightweight tow carts, eating habits, backwoods wheelchairs, speedy-refuel cans, comms devices and chargers – many apply to preppers, whether they’re urban or rural, whether they’re inclined toward either shelter-in-place or bugout survival.
Good-Better-Best
We regularly want a backup – specifically a backup, one that does the same job exactly or nearly the same way. Conditions ebb and flow, though, especially at crunch times. Alternatives that provide entirely different options add to our resilience and self-reliance in times of need.
Having both is the best of all worlds, making for more well-rounded preps all around. Happily, we have whole realms of possibilities that makes it pretty easy to accomplish both backups and alternatives.
Outdoor pursuits may have a lion’s share to offer, but we can find alternatives and backups pretty much anywhere. Sports of all types, permaculture, the re-purpose/up-cycle/re-use-it crowds, bio-mimicry in urban planning, and emergency response techs, shelters, and CnC cells are particular goldmines for techniques and tools.
History and the rest of the world are also excellent sources to apply to all arms of preparedness, both in terms of things that could derail our primary and backup plans, and coping mechanisms for when “normal” has left the building.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria. In 2019, out of 4,09,000 malarial deaths worldwide, children accounted for 2,74,000 malaria deaths. The best way to avoid mosquito-borne diseases is to avoid mosquito bites both indoors and outdoors. Here are a few mosquito-bite protection measures: - Use mosquito repellent according to the directions on the product label. - Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long trousers. - Residual spraying of insecticide inside housing structures once or twice a year. - Cover bed with mosquito nets ( insecticide-treated nets) - Early diagnosis and treatment of malaria prevent malaria-related deaths. Follow these preventive measures, safeguard yourself and your family members from the menace of mosquitoes and be a part of the "Zero Malaria - Draw the Line Against Malaria"

Suppose you are traveling to a country for the first time. In that case, it’s better to collect information about it as much as possible to minimize the unwanted circumstances while in the country. You don’t want to face problems while you travel, and we thought it would be helpful if we answer some frequently asked questions about Sri Lanka to make your trip a hassle-free one. In this piece, we are not limited to a specific aspect of the country; check whether your concern is included here or not.
Frequently Asked Questions about Sri Lanka Is Sri Lanka a safe country to travel?
If not to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, Sri Lanka is a super-safe country to travel. It really is; since the conclusion of 30-year civil war in 2009, the entire country is open for tourists. The only incident that shook the smoothness of safety happened in 2019 when the horrendous Easter attacks took place. However, now things are pretty normal, and you don’t have to worry about the safety side of the country.
Can I drink water in Sri Lanka?
Generally, the water in Sri Lanka is safe to drink, and it is chlorinated in most areas. However, it is advisable to limit the tap water usage, especially in the main cities, as water in those cities is somewhat contaminated compared to rural areas. Also, try to avoid ice unless you are 100% sure about the quality, as you could end up with an upset stomach, which you don’t want to happen while on a trip.
Is Sri Lanka an expensive country?
No, Sri Lanka is not an expensive country by any means. If you are on a budget and looking for a spectacular travel destination, Sri Lanka would be a great choice. Transport, food, and accommodation facilities are quite inexpensive if you don’t want them to be luxurious. In fact, you can travel from South to North of Sri Lanka for less than 30 bucks.
How many days should it take for a perfect trip in Sri Lanka?
Even though it is small in size, there are tons of places to visit in Sri Lanka. If you can afford at least two weeks, the visit would be more meaningful. However, you must plan the trip properly to get the most out of the two weeks as there are endless places and activities to do in the country.
What should I pack for Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is a tropical country, and most of the areas are hot throughout the year. So, you should give priority to light clothes. If you have plans to explore the upcountry of Sri Lanka, places like Nuwara Eliya, Hatton, Ella, or Kandy, the climate can be cold, and you have to be ready with appropriate dresses. Other than that, sunglasses, bathing suits, cameras, mosquito repellents, sun cream, hiking shoes, hand sanitizers, and sandals are some of the must-haves when traveling in Sri Lanka.
Is Sri Lankan Airlines safe to fly?
Yes, Sri Lankan Airlines considered one of the safest in the industry; and possesses a good track record. It’s not large, but it is a four-star service. The meals, crew, and other related services often get higher ratings from the travellers.
Where is the best place to stay in Sri Lanka?

Can I wear shorts in Sri Lanka?

Is Sri Lankan food spicy?
