Creative Expression Awaits - Your Introduction to Pottery
A complete pottery experience typically involves several steps, including preparing the clay, shaping the pottery, decorating it, and firing it. Here's a more detailed explanation of each step:
Preparing the Clay: The first step in making pottery is to prepare the clay. This can involve soaking and wedging the clay to remove any air bubbles, which can cause the pottery to crack during the firing process.
Shaping the Pottery: Once the clay has been prepared, the next step is to shape it into the desired form. This can be done using a variety of techniques, including hand-building, where the clay is shaped by hand, or wheel-throwing, where the clay is shaped on a potter's wheel.
Decorating the Pottery: After the pottery has been shaped, it can be decorated using a variety of techniques, such as glazing, which involves applying a layer of liquid clay to the surface, or slip trailing, where a thin line of clay is applied to the surface using a tool.
Firing the Pottery: The final step in the pottery-making process is firing the pottery. This involves heating the clay in a kiln to a high temperature, which causes it to harden and become durable. Different clays and glazes will require different firing temperatures and firing schedules.
After the pottery has been fired and cooled, it is ready to be used or displayed. The complete pottery experience can be both challenging and rewarding, as it requires a combination of creativity, technical skill, and patience to produce a finished piece. You can visit dharamkot studio for details and learn ancient pottery skills.

Magdalene Odundo (born 1950) is a Kenyan-born British studio potter, who now lives in Farnham, Surrey. Her work is in the collections of notable museums including the Art Institute of Chicago, The British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Museum of African Art.
She has been Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts since 2018.
Magdalene Odundo was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and received her early education in both India and Kenya. She attended the Kabete National Polytechnic in Kenya to study Graphics and Commercial Art and later moved to England in 1971 to follow her chosen vocation in Graphic Design. After training in Farnham, Surrey, she completed her qualifications in foundation art and graphics at the Cambridge School of Art, where she began to specialise in ceramics.
After a while in England she discovered pottery, and in 1974–75 she visited Nigeria, visiting the Pottery Training Centre in Abuja, and Kenya to study traditional hand-built pottery techniques. She also travelled to San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, to observe the making of black-burnished vessels.
Odundo's best-known ceramics are hand built, using a coiling technique. Each piece is burnished, covered with slip, and then burnished again. The pieces are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere, which turns them a red-orange. A second firing in an oxygen-poor (reducing) atmosphere causes the clay to turn black; this is known as reduction-firing. She uses the same types of techniques used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans and likes to take inspiration from countries such as China and Mexico. (from wikipedia)

The Inside Story: What Lights Up Our Designs – Oorjaa
I often get asked, why paper?
It’s a valid question because in India, paper is not a very popular material for craft or lifestyle accessories. Even though other Asian countries like japan and China use paper a lot in architecture, but not India. Truth be told, paper found me, in a way. It is 1997 and I had decided on a mid-career shift from ad-film making. I moved to Bangalore, from Bombay and I was learning pottery with the idea of becoming a full-time potter when I wandered into a talk by Suhag Shirodkar (who is today a close friend) on paper making at home. It wasn’t love at first sight but paper soon took pottery’s place and I found myself a full-time papermaker instead!! I loved the tactile quality of paper and I found the process was fascinating, how plant fibers transform into delicate paper. l also marveled how paper was so deceptively fragile and the surprising ways it responded to the elements, making it so easy to manipulate and sculpt.
Best of all I loved the way it romanced light.
I was soon making paper full time and I built a papermaking studio in 2000, with one assistant Prashant, a struggling artist from Bengal who still works with Oorjaa, and occasional help from the watchman, Suresh, next door, who today is Oorjaa’s chief papermaker. We explored making paper lamps from many natural fibres like kora grass, jute, sisal, hemp, lantana, pineapple, but mainly from banana and lokta because of the translucency of the resulting paper.
Setting up the studio and sourcing natural fibres, was not easy, but it opened up my horizons. Craft, livelihoods, rural economies, urban consumption, it was all so new to me, after 20 years of film making in Bombay, so I learned a lot.…and all paths lead to and deepened my interest in, sustainability and the environment.
This is about when, the seeds of Oorjaa were sown, again quite accidently.
What makes our Oorjaa paper different?
It’s the raw material and the way we process it. Most handmade paper in India is from cotton rag or sugarcane cud (bagasse). Ours is from banana fibre, which is extracted from the truck of adult banana trees, after they have run their course and are cut. Or from lokta, the bark of mulberry trees form North-east India. These two materials have a high cellulose content and a longer fibre length so the paper is very strong. The way we process it, without the use of harsh chemicals, not just retains its inherent strength but gives it greater translucency and an amazing malleability that allows us to sculpt it the way we do. I have lights at home that are 15–20 years old, they look old, but they haven’t torn or disintegrated!
Another factor is water usage. Paper-making uses a lot of water so the studio was designed to recycle water and also harvest rainwater. Every drop is precious.
Speaking of the studio, it is a very beautifully and intelligently designed building by Chitra Vishwanath of Biome. Made from compacted mud blocks and designed for maximum use of air and natural light so we actually survive without turning on lights and fans while we work. You can see pictures of the studio right here on the website.
Recycled paper tubes used in stunning architectural structures by architect Shigeru Ban(Image Source: japantimes.co.jp)
Coming back to paper. It is a highly under rated and under explored material in our country. To know what paper is, look at what the Japanese do with paper, apart from lights.
They have lived with paper for centuries and love it.
But what I love about paper is that it showed me that nature is full of material that we can use without resorting to plastic and also that by it’s ephemeral quality it reminds us that life is transient, just like we are !

The Dezeen guide to stone in architecture, interiors and design
Thinking of using stone in your project? Our latest Dezeen guide includes 15 popular types of natural rock used in architecture, interiors and design with links to hundreds of examples to inspire your own work.
Alabaster
Alabaster is a soft, fine-grained stone that has been used for centuries to carve elaborate forms and ornaments. However, its solubility in water means that it is best suited for indoor use.
In its pure form, alabaster is white and translucent, which makes it ideally suited to lighting design.
Studio Tack used tubular light shades made from alabaster to softly illuminate a cosy Japanese restaurant in New York (above), while lighting studio Allied Maker used the stone to create ornate totemic floor lamps.
Amarist Studio showcased the sculptural possibilities of the stone in its Aqua Fossil collection, which includes a coffee table with swooping, curved legs.
See projects featuring alabaster ›
Basalt
Basalt is a dark-coloured igneous rock that is formed when lava cools rapidly. It is most frequently used as an aggregate for concrete as it is low-cost and high-strength, but it is also a popular cladding and flooring material, especially when polished.
Examples of this include the facade of a small gallery in Amsterdam by Barend Koolhaas and a Hawaiian holiday home by Walker Warner Architects in which slender basalt cladding tiles are contrasted with cedar detailing (above).
Icelandic studio Innriinnri used two sculpted slabs of basalt stone to create a sculptural table that doubles as a stool or a piece of art, while South Korean artist Byung Hoon Choi polished the stone to create oversized outdoor furniture.
See projects featuring basalt ›
Flint
Flint is a highly durable stone found in abundance as irregular-shaped nodules in sedimentary rocks such as chalk. It has been used as a construction material since the Roman era, though it is not often seen in contemporary architecture.
Flint varies in colour, but it is commonly glassy black with a white crust. In architecture, it is usually knapped – split to expose its glossy inner face – before being laid in mortar.
Skene Catling de la Peña used a combination of knapped and unknapped flint to cover a wedge-shaped house in Buckinghamshire (above), which creates a subtle colour gradient across its facade.
See projects featuring flint ›
Gneiss
Gneiss, a robust metamorphic stone composed of alternating layers of different coloured minerals, is popular to use for flooring and worktops. Hues can range from pinks and golds to greens and dark greys.
Peter Pichler sourced grey gneiss with black-and-white bands from Passeier Valley in South Tyrol to create a large counter in the bar of an Italian Alpine hotel (above).
It can also be used as a cladding material, such as in Bernardo Bader Architekten's ski resort office in Austria and a radio broadcasting station in Nepal by Archium.
Granite
Granite is one of the most widely used stones in architecture and design. It forms from the slow crystallisation of magma beneath the Earth's crust. It is used for everything from load-bearing structures to cladding, worktops and furniture.
Its popularity is down to its high compressive strength, durability and low porosity. Granite is also found in an array of colours, making it suitable for a range of spaces and styles.
Heatherwick Studio recently used green granite to make a trio of its sculptural Spun chairs (above), while Snøhetta has used a grey variety to cover almost every surface of an Aesop store to emulate a rocky coastline.
Architecture studio NOARQ tested the material's strength by elevating a cabin on thick blocks of granite over the entrance to a stone villa in Portugal.
See projects featuring granite ›
Laterite
Rusty-red laterite stone is formed from the leaching of rocks and soil during alternating periods of high temperature and heavy rainfall in tropical areas. This process leaves behind a high concentration of insoluble iron oxides, which gives the rock its colour.
Laterite is typically used in construction in Africa and Asia in the form of bricks, which have excellent thermal mass and a low embodied energy. These bricks are made by cutting the rock out from below the water table when it is moist and leaving it to harden in the air.
Architect Francis Kéré used locally sourced laterite to build the walls of a school in Burkina Faso and Studio Lotus has used it to create the pedestal of a government building in India (above).
Limestone
There are many different types of limestone, a sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate. It is considered a good all-round building material as it is easy to cut and carve and usually has a uniform texture and colour.
Popular limestone varieties include travertine (see below) and Portland stone, which is used on notable buildings in London such as St Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace.
David Chipperfield Architects recently used limestone to clad the Kunsthaus Zurich museum extension in Switzerland and John Pawson used it to line the surfaces of a minimalist flagship store in Japan for fashion label Jil Sander.
Design projects that utilise limestone include a blocky furniture collection called Dig Where You Stand by students from the Estonian Academy of Arts (above).
See projects featuring limestone ›
Marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock with veins of calcite crystal. It forms from limestone that has been exposed to heat and pressure and is found in many colours. Marble is strong but easily carved and polishes well, making it suitable for numerous applications.
It is most popularly used in kitchen and bathroom designs, but it is often used as cladding too, such as in Alexander Owen Architecture's garden room in London (above).
See projects featuring marble ›
Onyx
Onyx is a translucent gemstone composed of parallel bands of quartz, found in almost every colour. It has a long history of use in sculpture and jewellery but is less commonly found in architecture and design. However, onyx is sometimes used as a facing or lighting.
Projects that use onyx include a mausoleum in Minneapolis by HGA and an office by Anne Claus Interiors where it has been used to clad a multi-coloured bar (above).
See projects featuring onyx ›
Porphyry
Porphyry is a strong and hard-wearing igneous stone that comes in reddish-brown to purple hues. It is composed of large-grained crystals embedded in a fine-grained groundmass.
It has been used in architecture and design since antiquity, though it is rarely seen in contemporary architecture and design. Today it is mostly used as aggregate in the construction of roads in places where cars require studded winter tires.
Pedevilla Architects used a block of porphyry as a kitchen island for a cookery school in South Tyrol, while architect Claudio Silvestrin used it to line the walls of a Milanese fashion boutique.
Quartzite
Formed from sandstone exposed to high heat and pressure, quartzite is a very hard and durable metamorphic rock. It is usually found in white and grey shades.
Quartzite is a popular material for kitchen countertops as it is resistant to staining, but is most commonly used as a decorative cladding or flooring.
Examples of this include a dwelling in Utah by Klima Architecture, Peter Zumthor's Therme Vals spa (above) and a monolithic Parisian library by Agence Pascale Guédot.
See projects featuring quartzite ›
Sandstone
Sandstone is composed of fine silicate grains that have eroded from other rocks, giving it either a warm red, yellow or orange colouration.
Used for construction since prehistoric times, sandstone continues to be a popular choice in architecture and design as it is abundant, durable and easy to handle.
Recent architectural projects that use the material include a cathedral extension by Feilden Fowles, a museum by Álvaro Siza, and an oval-shaped all-girls school in India (above) that is designed to blend into its desert surroundings.
See projects featuring sandstone ›
Shale
This grey fine-grained stone is one of the most common sedimentary rocks on earth. It is formed from the compaction of silt and mud into thin, fissile layers. In architecture and design, shale is usually crushed and processed into bricks, tiles and pottery, or heated with limestone to make cement.
Aketuri Architektai used shale tiles to clad a pointy woodland house in Lithuania (above), while Spaceworkers wrapped the stone around the basement of a Portuguese house to provide it with a raw, rugged aesthetic.
See projects featuring shale ›
Slate
Slate is a dark fine-grained stone that is formed when a sedimentary rock, such as shale, is subjected to high pressure. It is a foliated rock, meaning it is made up of thin sedimentary layers, which allows it to be split – or riven – into thin slabs.
Slate is durable and weather- and frost-resistant, making it a popular material choice for cladding, roofing and paving.
In interior projects, the material is often also used as floor tiles, hearths and kitchen worktops. Natalie Weinmann sanded and polished the stone to create a blocky furniture collection.
TRIAS used it to clad a small writer's retreat in a Welsh valley while Austin Maynard Architects diamond, scalloped and brick-shaped slate shingles to cover a Melbourne house (above).
See projects featuring slate ›
Travertine
One of the most commonly used forms of limestone is travertine, which has been sourced from mineral springs for use as a building material for centuries. The largest building in the world made from this stone is the Colosseum in Rome.
Today, travertine is mostly processed into tiles for internal and external surface coverings, but it is also a popular material for bathroom fit-outs. As it is found with troughs on its surface, processing travertine usually involves polishing its surface.
Projects that use travertine include an extension to a German museum by Bez + Kock Architekten (above), an apartment renovation in Lithuania by 2XJ, and a furniture collection by David/Nicolas.
See projects featuring travertine ›
Recent popular stone projects on Dezeen include an inconspicuous house on the island of Serifos, a monolithic spa by Smartvoll, a collection of luxury lodges on England's Jurassic Coast and a coffee table by Studio Twenty Seven.

What is HAPPENING on Sanjeevani, girl?! I saw some clips on my Insta and it had a wild!Gaurav Chopra?! A nervous wreck masquerading as Dr Ishani?? And she's MARRIED to GChops?! Ded!Dr Shashank?? Mysterious son and Dr Anjali in Germany??? What.
Hiiiiiiiiii friend! 😘😘😘
Loooooooong time! How have you beeeeeeeen?! 🤗🤗🤗
Lmao I can’t even beginnnnnnn to describe the clusterfuck that has been Sanjivani since like…. October, but lemme try and break it down in bullet points (if you know all of this already, just skip down to the “three years later” bit!):
Sid who was flirting it up and sexy dancing at a wedding with Ishani till 8 pm, suddenly at 8:01 pm remembers that he has a dead fiancee in his past (plus najaayaz issues) and suddenly starts calling himself a panauti, properly balls-to-the-wall believing in the phenomenon (y’know, as educated, scientifically-minded surgical residents/general medical wunderkinds tend to do! blaming things like their mother’s premarital pregnancy and an older family members’ developmental disorder on themselves!) and being passive-aggressive in trying to ward off Ishani to “protect her” from him.
Passive-aggressive has to be notched up to AGGRESSIVE-AGGRESSIVE coz Ishani’s a dheent who won’t take no for an answer; so he GOES AND MARRIES ISHANI’S BEST FRIEND ASHA, who has gotten knocked up by Aman (who tata-bye-byed outta the whole sitch. Props to him for being the smartest person in this show. He’s probably living an unfulfilled life somewhere, but seemed to come from wealth, so how sad can you really be when you have so much money????)
This whole SidAsha marriage was engineered behind the scenes by Vardhan - who found out that Asha was pregnant and threatened to set her Khap Panchayat from Haryana on her or some shit. He coerced Asha to take advantage of Sid’s “achchaai” by playing on his najaayaz kid feels and take responsibility for her.
Lots of angst and drama as Ishani and Sid struggle with their feels about each other while he’s married to a pregnant Asha, whom he’s pledged his support and name to.
Asha’s pregnancy hormones seem to make her batshit crazy and unable to make any reasonable decisions, and she keeps messing with Sid’s career; drugging him and making him fuck up important surgeries and what not.
All this, again, coz Vardhan. Vardhan wants revenge from Sid. Why? Because dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn, Sid is Shashank’s son! Vardhan wants to ruin Shashank’s life and thinks the best way to do it is by torturing his kids, and thus is fucking with Sid’s career, and is fucking with Anjali (like, literally. 👉🏽👌🏽👉🏽👌🏽👉🏽👌🏽 Coz sis has daddy issues and reallllllll bad judgement when it comes to men.)
But why does Vardhan want revenge from Shashank???? Damned if we (including the writers) know. Something to do with Vardhan’s Dearly Departed Didi, whose photo he keeps staring at while gritting his teeth. I’m guessing Shashank’s stuck his pen in that inkwell too?
Oh btw, Shashank also confessed his feelings for Juhi, who seemed HORRIFIED at the prospect, but like 5 minutes later is cool with it and reciprocates with her own crushy-wushy feelings? Idk man, idk. It’s all very unclear what that whole plot point was exactly, beyond some vague conversations and ambiguous coy smiles.
Daddy Shashank is disappointed in his known/unknown kid(s) for their various missteps in personal/professional lives. Saare milke inhe paagal banaa rahein hai, yeh chutiya bachchein.
Lots of other miscellaneous fuckery is going on between Sid/Ishani which……. honestly, is exhausting and not worth getting into. Anyway, it’s finally found out that Asha is the culprit behind this dhai mahine ka dukh-dard-chutiyaapa.
Ishani takes a bullet for pregnant Asha, and goes into a coma. Guilt-ridden Asha tells Vardhan to fuck off, signs annulment papers, and finally gtfo, but not before giving Sid a clue about who’s really behind all this kaand.
Vardhan is like lmao, I didn’t need her anyway and goes about paying randomass people to frame Sid for medical malpractice. Ishani literally comes out of the coma and hightails it straight to the police station to save her man. (For the record: I wouldn’t even let a man interrupt an afternoon nap of mine.)
Oh btw, by this point Anjali was like bohut ho gaya and fucked off to go play a Naagin on Colors. Good for her. 🐍🐍🐍
Sid and Ishani start working on exposing Vardhan. Coz appropriate R&R after getting up from a goddamn coma, what’s that!?!??!? JUST SHAKE IT OFF!!!!!!!!! PFFFFFFFT, TAKE A CROCIN OR TWO!!!!
Lo and behold, Dr. Shashank is killed in an accident. (We haven’t really seen him for the last………………………………… like 20 episodes or so? So…. do we really care at this point? Not really. Mohnish didn’t even show up to shoot the dead body waale shots. For the longest time I was like PAKKA SHASHANK NAHI HOGA, FACE NAHI DIKHA RAHEIN, KOI AUR HAI YAAR!!!!!!!!!!! But nope, all the characters identify him by face……… So yeah, egg on MY face.)
Sid’s mummy drops the bomb at the cremation that Sid is Shashank’s son and should light the funeral pyre. A very cool fun appropriate time for Anjali AND SID to find that out!!!!!
Sid and Ishani channel their sads into exposing Vardhan. Hallelujah, finally a win for the unluckiest people in this show. FFS even the little child who got impaled on a rod and Nurse Philo’s daughter with terminal brain cancer have had better lives.
Sid proposes to Ishani. He says he’s been accepted into some program in America and wants her to come with to start a new life there. Ishani is like nope, YEH MERA INDIA SANJIVANI, I LOVE MY INDIA SANJIVANI.
Ishani’s Mama/Mami come for rishta talks and catch the two almost making out in an on-call room and are all hawwwwwwwwww cheeeeeeee sanskaaaaaaar, etc. They turn out to dislike Sid coz najaayaz. And are rudeass snobby assholes to him and his family. Sid is understandably quite mad.
INSTEAD OF TALKING THAT SHIT THROUGH WITH HER, HE DITCHES ISHANI AT THE FUCKING MANDAP VIA TEXT AND FLIES OFF TO AMERICA. VIA TEXT. VIA TEXTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. We are all reminded once again, that Tellywood Men Ain’t Shit.
Except for Drs. Rahil and Neil who have categorically maintained their Very Good Boy crowns 👑👑👑👑 throughout the run of this show. Gold stars to them for achieving the impossible. 🌟🌟🌟
Sanjivani is on fire. Like, metaphorically it was always on fire, but this time literally. Unhinged Ishani runs riiiiiiight into the burning building.
3 years later………..
Sanjivani has been rebuilt. By Gaurav Chopra whose name is Navratna Singh, lololololol. An appropriate name because he does seem to be quite thanda thanda cool cool. He reopens and invites all the old staff back to pitch in and restore the place back to its old glory.
Anjali is a guest lecturer in Germany and may or may not come back to Sanjivani soon, depending on her Naagin transformation schedule.
Rishabh now seems to be a semi-decent human being????? Still a bit of a self-obsessed idiot, but definitely seems to be not as much of an asshole.
Rahil is super-serious and also bitter that his best friend just fucked off to America and hasn’t bothered keeping in touch. No one knows where Ishani is.
Ishani is now some kinda nervous wreck who spends her time doing pottery, but not the sexy Ghost kind. Just very sad and jittery and constantly popping anxiety pills (which looked like green Cadbury Gems to me???????) She can’t seem to help a person who sustains a semi-serious injury near her, completely freezing up in the moment.
Mr. Thanda Thanda Cool Cool finds her at the pottery studio, seems quite familiar with her, and tries to gently persuade her to come back to her first love: medicine.
But ofc heterosexuality rears its ugly head and sis can only think of the trash boy that ditched her.
Mr. TTCC brings her to Sanjivani but she behaves exactly like a toddler on the first day of school. There’s having to be coaxed out of the vehicle, reluctant dragging of feet, weeping, the works.
Precap shows her yelling at TTCC and saying he’s the boss of Sanjivani, not her, and kis haq se pakda hai, chodo mera haath!!!!!!!!!! And he gently reminds her of the wedding vows he took, to never let go of her.
Looks like the poor dude may have invested and rebuilt all this just for her and……………… in the end he’s gonna have to let her go to Dr. FuckBoi, mirroring the end of DMG, which……………… *prolonged, defeated sigh*
AND THAT’S WHAT YOU MISSED ON GLEE SANJIVANI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE SPACE
Plan a tour to Himachal Pradesh’s Andretta, a place of mountains and tranquility located in the famed Kangra valley’s artists colony. Think of a traditional Himachali mud house, restored to perfection and enveloped by bamboo forests. A place that combines rejuvenation and quintessential mountain goodness.
Jaadooghar Andretta is a mud cottage which comes with a total of 4 bedrooms and has 2 very snug and vibrant living rooms, accompanied by a cosy fireplace, with a touch of the artistic to reflect all the flavours of the artists’ colony it resides in. The mud cottage has a roomy balcony on the first floor which makes for a lovely spot to have your morning coffee and evening glass of wine while taking in the breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar mountain range.
With a lot of veggies and herbs organically grown on the estate, the hosts strive to bring a farm-to-table experience for the guests. The property has a catered kitchen which is managed by a dedicated staff. Laze around in the property gardens, find your own nooks and corners to relax in, do some yoga and meditation on the property’s yoga deck or take a dip in the heated swimming pool.
Jaadooghar Recommends: Andretta is probably Himachal’s best kept secret, known as an artists’ paradise. This place is anything but another ordinary Himalayan village. It has historically been a melting point of theatre, art and pottery enthusiasts. You must experience visiting the museums, galleries & pottery studios while you’re here., &

A little further afield, on the outskirts of Palampur is a Tea Estate, where your hosts can arrange a tour for you. There you can observe the entire process of tea growing, and the picking and manufacturing process, from plant to cup. They can also set up a picnic for you at the estate where you can enjoy a meal out in the open with panoramic mountain views and open skies. Charges for organising this tour shall be applicable and payable at the property directly.
Pottery Sessions At Andretta Pottery
We can arrange pottery sessions for you at the Andretta Pottery, where those who make a bowl, cup, or other ceramic object they'd like to keep, can have them glazed, fired and posted home, at a later date! This is a paid experience payable directly at the property.
Jaadooghar Recommends: The Andretta Artist Village is famous for its Norah's Centre for Arts (Norah Richards was the founder of the artists’ village during the British reign), Andretta Pottery and Craft Society (these places also sell earthenware to Fab India!). It is highly recommended that while you’re here, you take a trip to Norah's Mud House and Sir Sobha Singh Art Gallery (Sobha Singh was the famous Punjabi artist who was the exclusive painter of the images of all the Sikh Gurus). There is a nominal charge for entry to these art galleries and you can also grab some prints for your art collection!
Hikes And Walks
The joy of living in Himachal is best experienced when you trek along the many known and unknown trails, collecting pine cones and breathing in the freshness of the mountain air. The property is in close proximity to several such hill hikes, forest walking trails, waterfalls etc. You can walk through the artists’ village and collect some precious memories on the way. The hosts will be more than happy to guide you to all the local hotspots.
Bonfire Evenings
All guests can enjoy a bonfire in our verandah on cool winter nights. Even the mud cottage has a traditional fireplace in the living room for you to enjoy a cosy evening with loved ones.
THE ROOMS
The mud cottage has 4 bedrooms, out of which 3 are deluxe rooms while one is a superior twin room. All bedrooms have an exclusive bathroom for their guests to use. The upper floor rooms also have balcony access overlooking the mountains. The rooms and the mud cottage itself are designed like an open gallery for an immersive experience.
LOCATION KNOW-HOW
Located at a distance of 90 kms from Pathankot Station and 40 kms from Dharamshala’s Gaggal airport, the property can be reached by getting a local taxi from the station/airport. It can also be reached via road from Delhi, which is at a distance of 535 kms from Andretta. It is located in the prime area of Andretta, only about 1 km from the Sobha Singh Art Gallery, 400 m from Norah Richard’s House and only 100 m from Andretta Pottery, which are few of the main attractions in Andretta. You can reach all these destinations on foot from Jaadooghar Andretta.
MEET YOUR HOST
Doing complete justice to this artists’ colony, your host here will be Denis Harrap who has been at Andretta for 20 years and counting. Denis is an Art Director, most notable for his art design for the music videos of Michael Jackson’s ground-breaking ‘Thriller’ album. Jaadooghar Andretta is abundantly populated with beautiful antiques which have been collected by Denis over the years.

Tweak Your Marketing Strategies
Marketing is one of the most, if not the most, important part of growing a business. No business can reach its full potential if marketing falls behind. Good marketing results to an expanded customer base, which results to increased sales, which results to higher profit and accelerated growth for a business. Though all businesses know that, in this competitive world, marketing has become a nightmare for many. However, when the basics are right, the problems melt away and a clear path opens up.
If you are starting a new business, this article will help you come up with a great marketing plan. If you have an existing business, just look through and see if you are missing something.
Here are the 9 steps to a good marketing strategy:
1. Have a Business:
You must have a proper business in order to market it. This is a dilemma noticed in many startups. Most people don’t want to start because they don’t know how to reach the customers. A lot of them also try marketing first before they even have the business. In other words, you are trying to see if there are customers even if you don’t have the product yet, so you are often confused what to do first. Well, have the business or the products first. “You cannot sell anything you do not have”.
If you are looking for tips on how to start your business, I would recommend reading my previous article “10 Steps on How to Develop a Business” .
The previous article also discusses several marketing strategies, but this article will have an in-depth view only on marketing itself.
2. Set Your Demographic:
Demographic in marketing can mean a lot of things, but simply put, you must figure out what age, sex, profession, location or type of people would buy or benefit from your products and services. Without a clear demographic, you will only beat around bushes with negligible results. If you are marketing toys, your demographic is children, and if you are selling washing machines, your demographic is housewives and so on.
3. Know the Lifestyle:
Once you have set the demographic, it is crucial to know the lifestyles of the people in your demographic. This step is so important that you should spend some time and effort on this. Have a meeting with your business partners or employees on this matter. You may also seek professional help from a social physiologist who would give you a clear idea on how your potential customers think and feel day in and day out.
You may consider this a battle plan. Know your enemy’s strength and weaknesses, and you will win. I’m not really suggesting that your customers are your enemies, but you get the picture. People’s hearts and minds are like fortresses. No one wants to let you in, but you still need to figure out a way. You may have a toy store, so you must understand that children also like ice-creams. The same way, if you have an appliance business, you must know that housewives have to discuss this with their husbands and talk about their credit card payments before buying your washing machines. Knowing these small things will assist you in coming up with a sound marketing plan. In fact, Step 03 is so important that we will use it in our following steps.
4. Start Marketing:
Now that you are done with Step 03, let us enter the market. This means that you have to make your business visible to your demographic. Step 04 is the real marketing part and you must understand that this step is a continuous and evolving process. You will never be done with this. As long as the business exists, marketing must go on. This is a full time job that would require continuous and improved planning and execution. You can do it yourself or hire a specialist to do it. It is a very broad subject to talk about, so I have subdivided this step into several segments. If not all, at least one or several may be applicable for your business:
a. Advertisement: Your potential customers must see your products and services; therefore, advertisement is a powerful tool. Advertisements can be done through several media such as brochures, pamphlets, posters, TV, Radio, and of course, the Internet.
b. Demonstration: A demonstration of your products and services also works as a good advertisement. This is the reason why TV shopping channels dominated the markets in the 80’s all through the 21st and they are still reliable media today. As a matter of fact, it has become even more accessible through YouTube. Why not have your own channel and demonstrate how your product works? You may create a power point presentation on your products and services and show anyone using a laptop or a tablet.
c. Search Engine Optimization (SEO): This is such a powerful tool for marketing. Instead of going out and looking for your customers, let your customers find you by doing proper SEO work on your business website.  I’ll not sugarcoat it but SEO needs a team of professionals and will take a minimum of 6 months to see results. This is a bit costly and time consuming but really worth doing.
d. Social Media Marketing: Internet has made it easy for us to reach millions without paying a big advertising firm top dollars. Creating a good Facebook ad and paying only a $100.00 can reach tens of thousands. It is also possible to choose your demographic on Facebook. You can choose age, sex, location and type of people that the ad will be shown to. Just remember that if you are selling washing machines and your demographic is housewives, they may not be looking only for washing machines. They may be interested in yoga, art classes and pottery as well.  Remember your Step 03, and use it to tweak your ad on social media. Social media and blogs also provide backlinks to your site that helps your SEO.
e. Telemarketing: Telemarketing was, is and will be a good way to reach your customers. A good sales team on the phones can truly work magic. Nothing beats a warm and hearty human interaction with customers where the salesman can introduce and product and answer all questions without the customer having to browse through a website and find the right FAQ. You can hire a team of telemarketers in India or the Philippines at a very low cost.
f. Email Marketing: If you have an SEO team, they already know how to use a spamming software to send millions of mails with one click. You may buy one such software and do it yourself. Though the mails would most like end up on the spam folders, lots of people do check them out on a regular basis.
g. Door to Door Marketing: Old is gold. Door to door marketing still has its charms. Similar to telemarketing, this is a good old human interaction. This works well with local services in an area or a city. If you are selling appliances or office supplies, this is the way to go. Just remember Step 03 and guide the sales team accordingly. If you are selling washing machines, know that the wife may have to discuss that with her husband, so the sales team should not push for a sale on the first visit. They may ask for another meeting where they can bring a washing machine and demonstrate how easy to use it is. They may also offer a free day at the local spa, which will be discussed next in “Cooperative Marketing”. Door to Door marketing also works for local bakeries, restaurants, diners, spas, salons, bars and clubs. Leave a menu or list of services and prices at the doors or offices, and people will take notice of your business.
h. Cooperative Marketing: You may seek cooperation with another company, community service or social organization to show your products. Remember that kids like ice-creams as much as toys. If you are selling toys, shake hands with an ice-cream parlor where your toys can be displayed.  You may have pictures of your toys printed on the ice-cream cups, but of course you must be willing to share the printing costs. You can also help the ice-cream parlor in the same way. If a kid buys $20 dollar worth of toy, he gets a free $2 dollar worth of ice-cream from that ice-cream parlor. If you are selling washing machines, shake hands with a yoga studio or a spa. Housewives would love to have their nails done for free. Cooperative marketing helps several businesses at the same time, and is very effective in reaching your customers.
5. Make the Processes Easy:
Think from the customer’s end and make the process as easy as you can. Create strategies and have proper personnel in place so that a customer can find your products, choose, order, pay and have the delivery in the easiest and quickest way possible. Simplicity is the best.
6. Make Your Business Accessible:
I get so annoyed browsing through some company websites where if you need help, they will direct you to an FAQ page. Then there are hundreds of useless questions and answers that you don’t need, and then if you are done browsing and haven’t found answers, you get directed to a form where you can submit your inquiries or possibly call a customer support agent and ask your question. Make your business accessible. Calling a Customer Support agent should be the first option. That’s the quickest way a customer can get an answer right away. It is good to have an FAQ page, but make sure customers can communicate with you quickly through phone, chat or text messaging.
7. Go with the Flow:
As I have mentioned earlier that marketing is a continuous and evolving process. You have to always adapt to the changing world. Many businesses fail for this reason alone. They hold on to the old ideas and refuse to change in an ever changing world. Since you can’t stop the change, go with the flow and be adaptive. New trends and technologies are to be taken advantage of. Internet and smartphones have made it easy for people to broadcast themselves. You really don’t need a recording contract from a big company to be a singer. You can just record a song by yourself and sell it on iTunes. The trend is that more people are being empowered individually nowadays. Use it as an opportunity.
Here is an interesting situation. A company selling hair products had a channel on YouTube that demonstrated their items on videos, but not many were viewing those videos so they took advantage of others. They found several hot girls who often posted pictures and had several hundred thousand followers each on Instagram. They paid the girls some money and provided them with some pictures. The girls agreed to post those pictures for their next 5 posts together with the company YouTube link on Instagram and bam. The company immediately had a million subscribers to their channel. It cost them a fraction of what they might have had to pay a professional advertising firm.
So, again, Step 03, know your customers and keep up with their trends and lifestyles and there will be hundreds of ways you can reach them.
8. Know Your Competitions and Be Different:
Yes, market is competitive. If you are to succeed in this game, you have got to be different. Why do I emphasize the word? Well, many would say that if you are to succeed, you have to be the best. If you are a big company and have the budget for it, yes, go for it and be the best. But if you are small and struggling, you have to be different. You should know what your rivals are doing and do certain things a little differently. Look at all the above mentioned steps and see where you can be different.
Let’s say that you have a diner in an office district. There are 10 offices and all of them have their own cafeteria where people usually have their lunch. You can have a few menus printed nicely and distribute throughout all the offices. Now let’s say that there is another diner that does the same thing. You can distribute your menus with free muffins, and you can mention in the menu that with every order of lunch, a muffin is free. It wouldn’t cost you that much if you order muffins in bulk from a bakery. You might have cleaner rest rooms or wash areas than your rival. Your tissue dispenser can be a little more convenient. You might have a different catsup dispenser. Your steak sauce can be different. You might want to play relaxing music at the diner because people at work are stressed. You may not notice the change instantly, but these small differences will send subliminal messages to the people and they would love to have a nice relaxing lunch at you diner rather than go to a crowded cafeteria in their office buildings.
9. Give Special Privileges to Your Own Employees:
This is marketing on its own. In my previous article, I discussed how important it is to take care of your employees. Give special privileges to your own employees, and you will not regret it. I often hang out at a bar, and I know the waiters and waitresses. When it’s their days off, what do they do? They bring their friends and hang out and drink at the same bar and why? All employees enjoy a 10% discount on all food and drinks that they order. What do you think their friends do when they want to hang out and drink? They bring more of their friends and hang out and drink at the same bar. The process is almost automatic.
These are the basic 9 steps for good marketing. I hope they help. Have a great business, and feel free to ask any specific questions here.

We can hardly believe this home is in Melbourne!

A Stylish, Sentimental Home In St Kilda
When our art director Annie Portelli gets excited about a home she’s styled for one of our shoots, we sit up and pay attention. Annie was seriously buzzing over the St Kilda home of Barb Hyman and her family. Barb renovated this once derelict grand mansion, into a chic and sprawling terrace of finely crafted luxury.

A Warrandyte Delight
Over the last few years we’ve seen so many Melbournian’s head to Warrandyte in search of a tree change close to the city. Another major plus is the incredible modernist and mid-century homes you can still find in wonderful condition in the area! The unconventional property of Sage and Clare’s Phoebe Bell and Chris Monahan is a perfect example. The sprawling property is home to two families, filled with colourful art and objects, with sweeping views over the treetops.

‘When we bought the house, only the left side was there. We felt the house looked unbalanced so when drawing up the plans we wanted to balance it out. We used the same colourbond steel and existing design features as we wanted it to look like it had always been like this, and not a new extension. We were so lucky with our builder as he had done the original renovation the year before so was across all the finishes and colours we needed. I love the dark tones of this house against all the greenery’, Chyka explains. Photo – Amelia Stanwix.

This room was originally a gallery and didn’t really work for Bruce and Chyka. They decided to double the width and turn the colour scheme black – they wanted it to look dramatic, so peaked the ceiling to add the drama with three antler chandeliers. The room is light and bright thanks to the doors to the courtyard. The couch and chairs were old ones they recovered. Photo – Amelia Stanwix.
The Impossibly Chic Chyka Weekender
Chyka Keebaugh puts her own distinctive flair on her ‘Nordic meets The Hamptons’ weekender! The Big Group co-founder was scrolling through instagram when she spied this holiday home (seriously!) and secured the property! Together with husband Bruce, Chyka embarked on large-scale renovations, including extending the grand master bedroom and major landscaping around THAT spectacular new pool.
