Super Smash Bros. is the result of world-class talent working with limitless resources, guided by one of the most obsessive and trusted auteurs to ever work in games.

The series started life as a prototype called Dragon King: The Fighting Game, which was primarily developed by just two people: Masahiro Sakurai and Satoru Iwata. The full game, developed by a full team, was released less than a year after work on the prototype began. Game development tools have improved since 1999. A solo novice can do things now that would have been impossible to experts. Inventing Dragon King was a very different process from cloning Smash Bros.

Loren "Terral" Crain has been developing Antistatic off and on for the past 11 years. The result is more impressive than Dragon King. It is less impressive than a finished game.

The characters, abstract as they are, look appealing and move the way competitive Smash Bros. like: a little too fast and slippery. Directional attacks, special attacks, smash attacks, shields, throws—it’s a perfect facsimile. Characters even have multiple taunts.

Pity that getting into the game means navigating placeholder menus that frequently crash, just to beat up A.I. opponents that can’t fight back.
+ An impressive reproduction of Super Smash Bros. + Seems tuned to competitive Smash Bros. players' interests. Which is antithetical to everything I like about those games, but I have known people who would be way into a finished version of this. + For jumbles of untextured polygons, the characters and stages look pretty cool.
– Awful menus and U.I. – Everything makes it crash. – Minimal A.I. – It's been in development for 11 years. It's been in Early Access on Steam for three years. The development roadmap is a dream. Just walk away, Loren Crain. Free yourself from this stress. You clearly have skills and drive. Put them to work on a project you can finish.
🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 Bottom Line: If you are a Fox only, Final Destination person, and you already own Antistatic through a bundle, put it on your laptop and take it to the next Smash Bros. tournament. You and your competitive friends will get a kick out of it, at least for a few minutes. For everyone else, no. Are you kidding? No. Don't pay money for a buggy, derivative prototype.
