Here’s to 2020!

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (30th December 2019 - 3rd January 2020)

It may be a new year (and a new decade) but some things stay the same. Darren is still pining over Nancy, the Hollyoaks police force are still incompetent, and Breda still hasn’t been caught. As New Year’s Eve kicked off, Charlie confronted Nancy over her supposed affair with Darren, the affair that Darren had demanded he keep quiet about. Nancy was horrified by Charlie’s accusation and promised her nephew that nothing was going on, before heading off to The Hutch for her new year party. Whilst there, she confronted Darren over the state he’d gotten Charlie in to, leading to Darren referring to him as a stupid kid. However, both were unaware that Charlie had snuck into the kitchens, having taken up the dare that Leah had set Ella to steal something. Furious, Charlie returned home with a huge tub of ice cream and Darren’s credit card, which he used to buy a whole load of virtual currency for his game, much to the delight of Leah and Lucas, and the horror of Ella.

Meanwhile, downstairs at the Osborne’s, Brooke, Ollie, Imran, Juliet and Sid were also having a gathering, with Sid and Juliet making plans to sneak off and sleep together. However, Juliet was beginning to have second thoughts, and Sid stormed off when she voiced her concerns. Brooke attempted to comfort Juliet but was left shocked when her friend planted a kiss on her! Whilst Brooke was left confused by the kiss, Juliet quickly tried to brush it off as nothing and soon left to look for Sid. Over at The Dog, Sid was buying drugs from his cousin, Jordan, but was spotted by Ollie and Imran. Luke soon arrived on the scene, and realising what was happening, tried to convince Sid not to throw his life away. Sid decided to make up with Juliet, and the pair headed back to the Lomax’s to sleep together.

At the Hutch, another party was taking place, as Nancy had gathered the Mum’s of the village for their own new years bash. However, Nancy soon put a downer on things when she decided to tell Mandy about her fling with Darren. Mandy was left devastated by the revelation and, the following day, headed to The Loft with Cindy to let her hair down. When Mandy realised that underage Sid and Juliet were in the club, she attempted to take Juliet’s drink from her, leading to the teenager spiking Mandy’s drink with ketamine. Mandy awoke in the village the next morning with no recollection of how she’d got there. Mandy struggled to piece together what had happened, and was left terrified when she found a wad of cash and a note in her bag, demanding that she keep quiet about what she’d seen...

Elsewhere, Breda decided to take up Jack’s suggestion of a move to Portugal, much to the shock of both families. First, however, there was the small matter of Breda framing Mercedes for her killings. We know that Breda has been collecting ‘evidence’ to implicate Mercedes over the last few weeks, and this week, she collected the last of it; the buttons from Glenn and Carl’s jackets. Under the guise of dropping off Christmas presents for Curtis, Breda was able to gain access to the Donovan’s flat and, whilst Grace’s back was turned, she pocketed the dolls she’d made for Curtis and Bobby. However, as Breda hid her evidence box under the floor back at home, she was interrupted by the return of John Paul. Worried that John Paul was onto her, Breda needed to escape quickly and so wrote an anonymous confession on the back of one of Bobby’s drawings and left it on DS Cohen’s car. With the wheels in motion, Breda went to meet Jack, but was left furious when he revealed that he couldn’t leave Darren due to the problems he and Mandy were facing. With her plan unravelling, Breda decided to take revenge on Darren, by stabbing him! Although, surely Breda should be pleased that Jack is being a good Dad and putting his son first? Then again, why am I looking for logic in this storyline? 

In other news this week, Yasmine was delighted when Tom asked her out whilst Sienna was clearly struggling with the fact that Brody and Liberty had slept together. Finally, as the residents of Hollyoaks welcomed 2020, we got a glimpse into the future. It seems 2020 is going to be a very dangerous year for some of the village’s youngest residents...

i mean james is the only person who wears expensive ass shoes like that & let’s be real he isn’t gonna completely be the best dad to romeo anytime soon so like it’s not shocking that breda is prob gonna try to kill him but like... before we get into the hysterics the possibilities like?? james possibly being in the hospital might trigger harry returning. it will begin the jarryeo dynamic. it could be a good thing

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (6th-10th January 2020)

It was finally the end of Breda this week as her identity as the serial killer was revealed. However, following Breda’s scheming last week, the police were thrown totally off the scent as they arrived to arrest Mercedes for the murders, just as the McQueen’s were sitting down to a late Christmas lunch. Meanwhile, over at The Hutch, Darren was rushed to hospital following the stabbing, but there was relief all round when Misbah revealed that he was going to be fine. Back at The Dog, Mercedes was released pending further investigation. Whilst she’d been gone, John Paul had been doing a spot of detective work and discovered the box of ‘evidence’ that Breda had been hiding. He shared his discovery with Mercedes and the pair came to the shocking realisation that Breda was the serial killer. However, the pair knew that they’d need more evidence before the police would take them seriously so, whilst John Paul kept Breda distracted at home, Mercedes headed for the pig farm...

Events at the pig farm escalated quickly, as Tony was discovered, Sylver was stabbed, the place was set on fire, and finally, Breda was stabbed through the head with her own knitting needles . Tony and Sylver were rushed to hospital, and Diane, who’d been at the hospital attending an event with Edward, was shocked to see her husband wheeled past her. This particularly threw a spanner in the works, as Edward and Diane had just decided to get together properly. However, Diane was relieved to know that Tony hadn’t left her, and told Edward that they must never speak of what had happened between them. Clearly furious that Tony was back, Edward briefly considered not helping him when the machines he was hooked up to began to beep. Why the doctors were unable to hear the noise themselves, we’ll never know. When Tony later came round, Diane showed him some drawings the kids had done. Realising that Edward had wormed his way into their lives, Tony begged Diane to keep Edward away from them...

As Tony recovered in hospital, Diane brought the kids in to see him. Whilst Rose and Dee Dee were pleased to see him, Ant was hostile towards his Father, demanding to know where he’d been and why he’d left them. Despite trying, Tony was unable to explain the true gravity of the situation, which frustrated Ant, who began banging his action figure on the table. The noise took Tony right back to the pig farm and he shouted at his son, frightening all three kids. At that moment, Edward rushed in and demanded to know what was going on. Once the kids were taken home, Tony confronted Edward over his failures as a Father, and Edward spun him a tall tale about how he’d tried to stay involved, but had been thwarted by Tony’s Mum at every turn. Tony seemed to believe his Father, and he later told Diane he wanted Edward to stick around...

In order to help them deal with the trauma that Breda had put them through, Jack, Sylver and Tony attended therapy sessions later in the week. Diane was shocked when Tony broke down in tears, as he grieved for Breda, and became jumpy at every little noise. Meanwhile, Sylver was struggling to know how to feel; he hated his Mum for sending him to prison, but he felt guilty for killing her. Mercedes accompanied Sylver to the session to ensure he didn’t confess to murder (how do the police think those knitting needles became embedded in Breda’s skull?!) and hoped that a reconciliation might be on the cards. However, Mercedes was left devastated when Sylver decided that his future lay with Grace. Jack was also deciding to make a knew start, beginning with a holiday. However, as Jack boarded the ferry, Warren Fox and the twins were disembarking, with Warren telling the kids that it was time to put their family back together. It would appear that Warren hasn’t changed a bit, as he ended the week by kidnapping Brody!

Elsewhere this week, Sienna continued to struggle with Brody and Liberty’s actions, whilst Martine urged her to remember that the pair had only slept together to give her a baby. Sienna later felt guilty when Liberty was rushed to hospital after a scare, and had been alone as Sienna had insisted that Brody spend the day with her. Edward’s daughter, and Tony’s half sister, Verity arrived on the scene, and immediately hit it off with Sami and finally, Jesse and Courtney prepared for their wedding.

The Tragedy of Grace Black

Grace has had a tough life full of loss.

In 2013 Grace lost her older sister Clare Devine. Clare was run down by Dr Browning.

The following year (2014) Grace lost her father Fraser Black. Fraser was shot by Freddie Roscoe.

Grace's boyfriend Trevor lost his son Dylan (Royle) in 2015. Dylan was a victim of the Gloved Hand Killer.

Trevor (Royle) also lost his life on their 2016 wedding day. Trevor was stabbed by Nico Blake.

Grace's mother Tracey Donovan drowned in 2017, drowning after being pushed of a boat.

She then lost her brother (Adam Donovan) who was shot by his father (and Grace's boyfriend) in 2018.

Boyfriend Glenn Donovan lost his life in the same year, murdered by Breda McQueen.

Despite Grace getting a break in 2019, in early 2020 she lost her brother Jesse Donovan to alcohol poisoning.

And later that year her last (known) remaining sibling Liam Donovan died when Grace pushed him down the stairs.

It's not easy being Grace Black, yet she remains a strong independent woman.
