John Paul Comes Clean...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (19th-23rd April 2021)
Hollyoaks kicked off its latest whodunnit this week as George was found dead (for real, this time). As the week began, John Paul decided to ignore Sally’s warnings and went house hunting with George. However, after a run in with James and Ste resulted in George turning on John Paul again, John Paul ended up kissing Ste and spending the night on his sofa. John Paul returned home the following morning and lied to George about where he’d been, saying that he’d slept in a hotel after their argument. Unfortunately, George didn’t believe John Paul and his suspicions were proved correct when he phoned the hotel, only to be told that they’d been closed for refurbishment since October. George confronted John Paul, resulting in yet another argument, and George stormed out. Later, at work, George confided in a colleague, making it look like he was the one being gaslighted, before texting John Paul to tell him he needed space.

The following day, George’s colleague turned up at The Dog and informed John Paul that George had been killed whilst dealing with an altercation between four men. John Paul was left devastated by the news but, as he later looked through some of George’s belongings, he looked up to find the man himself standing in front of him holding an engagement ring! George revealed that he’d asked his colleague to fake his death in a bid to show John Paul how strong they were together. Of course, John Paul was horrified by George’s actions, despite George protesting that John Paul’s grief proved how much he loved him. John Paul decided to accept George’s proposal and the pair celebrated with a family gathering at The Dog. However, when James and Ste arrived, George was left furious when James revealed that John Paul had been with Ste earlier in the week. Eventually, George told John Paul that he would forgive him on the condition that he severed all ties with James and Ste, telling Ste that he would report him for sexual assault against John Paul if he objected. With his history, John Paul was disgusted that George would stoop so low and John Paul hit George, just as Sally and Theresa arrived. Having finally had enough, John Paul told his family about the months of torment he’d been subjected to. The McQeen’s were furious following John Paul’s revelation whilst George made plans to leave the village. However, as he waited for his taxi, he was attacked from behind by an unknown assailant...

Meanwhile, Trish was raging this week when she discovered that her takings had been stolen. After witnessing her accusing Leah, Ste revealed to Fergus that he was the thief and filled him in about his money worries. Fergus soon had a proposition for Ste and offered to buy the Lomax’s home and then rent it back to them for a reasonable rate. After talking it through with Leela, Ste agreed to proceed, much to the annoyance of James, who didn’t think it was a good idea. James was right to be worried as we later saw Fergus watching Peri via a hidden camera he’d placed in her bedroom, which he’d accessed under the guise of checking for a gas leak. The next day, Peri was delighted to receive a bikini, which she assumed was a gift from Juliet. However, when Juliet denied all knowledge, Peri was furious and blamed Warren, knowing that he’d visited the flat earlier in the day. Warren was forced to cover for Fergus when Fergus informed everyone that the bikini had actually been a gift for Maxine from Warren and it had been left it at the flat by mistake. Peri seemed to accept the explanation and when she’d gone, Warren demanded money from Fergus in exchange for his silence. However, instead of giving him the cash, Fergus booked a table for Warren and Maxine at a fancy restaurant....

In other news this week, Martine told her family that she needed to have a biopsy whilst Mandy was devastated when Ella refused to see her. Sid decided that he’d like to become a police officer and was delighted when Courtney arranged for him to speak with DS Cohen to discuss his future. In fact, he was so thrilled that he kissed Courtney! Finally, Tony decided that Nancy and Darren should get back together and arranged a surprise date.

I want you to be straight, Jules, because… ‘cause I love you. But I know deep in my heart that you’re not. Look, this is me. And you can come to me with whatever you’re feeling, I promise. You’re going off on one. Maybe you haven’t quite got there in your head or maybe you haven’t even been there yet. But…

Banged Up...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (26th-30th April 2021)
There were difficult times for John Paul this week when he discovered that George had been murdered, and he was just as upset as he had been on the previous two occasions that news of George’s death had been shared with him. Having hit George shortly before his death, John Paul feared that he had been responsible and went to tell the police. John Paul told DS Cohen that George had been violent towards him and he had struck out in self defence, however, it was clear that his story was not being believed. DS Cohen later got the results of George’s post mortem back and they revealed that George had died from a blow to the head, likely coming from a missing book-end. Despite John Paul protesting his innocence, DS Cohen believed that he had killed George and charged him.
Tumblr media
Despite Verity warning him that he was too close to the case, James stepped up to represent John Paul, and advised him to plead guilty to manslaughter in the hope of receiving a reduced sentence. Meanwhile, Nancy decided to track down the real killer and she looked to have a made a breakthrough when she discovered that George’s ex, Dean, was back in town. Nancy asked to meet with Dean, planning to record a confession. Unfortunately, Dean realised what Nancy was up to, but not before admitting that he’d been in the village on the day of the murder...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Cher also found herself in the firing line for the murder when a photo of her and George arguing turned up on social media, however, the police were quick to establish the photo as a fake. Although the police were satisfied that Cher wasn’t involved, Mercedes wasn’t so convinced, and questioned whether Cher could have been responsible, pointing out that she had killed before. Mercedes later apologised to Sylver for her remarks, telling him that she thought she may be pregnant and blamed her outburst on ‘baby brain’. Later, a pregnancy test proved that Mercedes wasn’t actually pregnant and, struggling to come to terms with the news, she took a look through Gabriel’s memory box. Sensing another opportunity to be a cow, Cher stole the memory box and planned to set fire to its contents, until a chat with Liberty gave her food for thought. Cher returned the box but proved that she wasn’t done with her vendetta against her step-mother as she proceeded to hide outside the pub and play sounds of a baby crying...

Elsewhere, Diane’s mental health continued to deteriorate this week and Tony was worried when he realised that she’d cancelled her scan, telling her husband she was worried about catching Covid whilst at the hospital. Maybe if the residents of Hollyoaks wore their masks correctly, there would be less Covid in the village? However, it was the electrics that were causing Diane serious worry and she called in an electrician to check things over. Despite the visit throwing up nothing of concern, Diane wasn’t convinced and attempted to climb a ladder to check on the chandelier. However, as Diane climbed, she suddenly blacked out and Tony was panic stricken when he returned to find Diane lying unconscious on the floor.

In other news this week, Leah was amused to hear Sid singing a song about a mystery brunette whilst Cindy and Marnie were each convinced that had the ‘business woman of the year’ award in the bag. Finally, Shaq confessed that he was £50,000 in debt...

Entry 2 - Finding your feet in the internship (40 hours)
The first few days of the internship, the operations managers were giving me paper work to do for the first few days. After finishing what paperwork there needed to be done. The operations managers wanted me to make templates for the football fixture in 2022. The templates for all three of the grades being Premier Division, Division 1, and Division 2.
I felt a bit pressured to be honest to be given such a big responsibility with not even being a week in. Although I was keen to show my skills that I had gathered during the course and apply them to the Outer East Football Netball (OEFN). ‘Internships supply valuable employees and competent job applicants to the company’, (Crumbley & Sumners, 1998). My placement at OEFN I felt would give me a better understanding on how the workforce is, and the type of environment which is involved. ‘One of the top reasons to do an internship is to gain practical experience that complements what you’ve learnt during your studies’, (GradConnection, 2019).
I had started off doing at least 10 different templates a day. All on different platforms, with different fonts, images, tables, anything that I would be able to hand in and would have a different look from the rest of them. After submitting to the Operations Manager (Cameron) a suitable one that he was impressed with, I would then be able to make duplicates of that one and apply across all three divisions.
Then after finding the one Cameron would like I would have to use that template for Premier Division, Division 1, and Division 2. After the templates I was to them add the teams into the templates as well and create it all. This consisted of fitting 21 rounds of football into a A4 document that was readable for the audience.
Everything from the teams playing, to the dates being correct, the template being in match, and spelling had to all be checked at least 5 times. It then came to sponsors for the leagues, as well the logo for OEFN itself after they had changed from their name and logo the previous year.
Colours had to be similar to the leagues colours which would be predominantly green, with a little bit of blue and white to go with it as well. Images of the teams would be used to go into the background of the fixture and to be transparent. This way it would still be easy for the audience to read the matches without the photo standing out. It would then come to images that include the teams in the divisions, as well players who look to be having fun, not smoking/drinking, do not make the league look bad by having a certain image (Image 1 & 2).
With the leagues main social media platform of Facebook having almost 10,000 likes, you need to have no mistakes or errors that would make the league look bad. This is from both the league and yourself.
I adjusted pretty well with my first 40 hours. I am able to start conversations with people in the office, as well as ask any questions or concerns that I may find.
