Tkachuk has ‘really special’ day bringing Stanley Cup home to St. Louis
Panthers forward visits first responders, children’s hospital with famed trophy
ST. LOUIS -- Matthew Tkachuk remembers visiting family in Boston, the first stop usually being the North End fire department where his grandfather, John Tkachuk, was the chief.
“We’d ride the pole, try the hat on, sometimes we’d go for a ride even though I don’t know if that’s allowed,” the Florida Panthers forward said with a laugh on Thursday. “It was super cool and anytime I see firemen, on duty or off, I always make sure to go say ‘Hi’.”
And when Tkachuk had his day with the Stanley Cup on Thursday, the Brentwood Fire Department, located about 15 minutes west of his hometown of St. Louis in Brentwood, Missouri, was one of the stops he definitely had to make.
It was an enjoyable day for Tkachuk, who had 61 points (24 goals, 37 assists) in 71 regular-season games and 22 points (six goals, 16 assists) in 24 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help the Panthers win their first Cup championship last month.
His time with the Cup actually began Wednesday, when he took it to lunch at Grassi’s Ristorante in Frontenac, Missouri, about 15 minutes west of St. Louis.
On Thursday he brought the Cup to his elementary school, Villa Duchesne in St. Louis, the St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the Brentwood police and fire departments.
“It’s been amazing," he said. "I’m trying to have that little mix of fitting everything I want possible in, but also want to enjoy it with those who are close to me. It’s been awesome so far and I’m sure the day’s going to continue to be awesome.”
There was no riding on the pole at the fire department this time, but Tkachuk did try on a fireman’s hat, saying that “it was a little snug. I’ve got a big head, but it was good.” He also took photos with the firemen and their families, displaying the Cup in the department and outside in front of one of the fire trucks.
Brentwood assistant fire chief Ed Beirne said when he told his staff that Tkachuk would be coming by with the Cup, “I didn’t think their eyes and mouths could open any wider.
“It’s an honor for us to actually be considered,” said Beirne, whose grandson, Faris, was placed in the Cup for one of the photos.
“Although we know the Tkachuk family is part of Brentwood, growing up around here, this is a massive effort to win the Cup. For them to remember and humble us by sharing his day with the Cup, I know he gets it for a short amount of time, but to share that time with us and then bring a lot of joy to the staff and family we were able to assemble, that is what’s really special about public safety and the NHL in general. It’s a family sport. All of us have played it, it’s a family, and this is a testament to that.”
When Tkachuk brought the Cup to the police department, he was joined by his immediate family, including brother Brady, captain of the Ottawa Senators, and father Keith, the former NHL forward who had 1,065 points (538 goals, 527 assists) in 1,201 games with the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Atlanta Thrashers and St. Louis Blues.
Brady was catching up with Matthew after some early-morning training.
“I can’t just be riding his coattails. Have to prepare for next season,” Brady said with a laugh.
“This is our childhood dream, just to see it up close and personal, to see how happy and genuinely excited and fulfilled and satisfied Matthew is, it’s amazing to see. It’s been awesome to see, and it’s definitely created that burning desire for me to provide that for my family and friends, too.”
Matthew took photos with individual officers and staff members, who were hesitant as they approached the Cup.
“Anybody that knows anything about hockey knows the Cup is sacred, so we’re scared to touch it,” Brentwood police chief Joseph Spiess Jr. said.
“The Tkachuk family has a strong presence in Brentwood. Not only do we get to protect them, but we get to share in their celebration, so it’s cool for us. Most of the people in this building are huge fans, sports generally, but hockey in particular.”
When the Vegas Golden Knights won the Cup in 2023, it marked the first time that names were engraved on the Cup prior to players and staff getting their respective days with it. It was something Matthew appreciated.
“It’s really special for my family. Years and years and years of hockey in our blood and for grandparents and extended family that come to my house and see that Tkachuk name on the Cup there, it’s truly such a special thing,” Matthew said.
The family had its own time with the Cup by midday Thursday. After bringing home some barbecue, Brady and Keith, along with Matthew’s sister, Taryn, mom Chantal and his fiancée, Ellie Connell, took turns taking a sip of beer out of it.
Tkachuk had already spent some quality time with the Cup. He and a few Panthers teammates brought it to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on June 25, the day after they defeated the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. That day, they brought it to the Elbo Room, a bar near the beach, and Tkachuk carried the Cup into the Atlantic Ocean.
But there’s something special about bringing it back to your hometown.
“It hasn’t sunk in,” Keith said. “It’s been so much fun watching Matthew with the Cup with other people. That means more than winning, so it’s so cool. We’re pretty proud. He’s been around, grew up here, wants to be a part of it and he took it everywhere. Everybody’s loving it. We’re loving it.”

A powerful Senate Republican is demanding answers from a private-equity backed hospital in southeast Iowa amid revelations that a male nurse practitioner at the facility sexually assaulted nine female patients there in 2021 and 2022.
The facility, Ottumwa Regional Health Center, is part of Lifepoint Health Inc., a hospital system headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee, and owned by Apollo Global Management, the huge private-equity firm in New York co-founded by Leon Black.
The incidents at the Ottumwa facility came to light late last year after the overdose death in the hospital of Devin Caraccio, 27, a certified nurse practitioner who was a contract employee at the hospital, according to its spokeswoman. After he died on the job in October, the Ottumwa police accessed his cellphone, finding photo and video evidence that he had assaulted the patients, according to a police department investigator, Jeremy Tosh.
The police department said in a statement in December that “It is suspected that all of the victims were asleep, or in a state of unconsciousness when the assaults took place.” Two of the victims have not yet been identified; two were under 18, Tosh said in an interview last week.
Eight-term Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa sent a letter this month to the hospital, Lifepoint Health and Apollo’s chief executive, Marc Rowan. In it, he asked whether financial practices had reduced money for patient care and may have facilitated the sexual assault.
One of Grassley’s questions was whether Apollo contractually shields itself from liability for activities that occur at hospitals it invests in, operates or manages. He also asked Apollo to detail its “expertise regarding rural or non-urban hospitals.”
A spokeswoman for Apollo said: “Our funds are investors in Lifepoint and we are responding to the questions from Senator Grassley’s office.”
In addition to Ottumwa Regional, Lifepoint has more than 60 acute care hospitals in 17 states, including Arizona, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. The facility in Ottumwa, a town of 25,000, is one of many rural hospitals owned by Lifepoint; it is the only hospital in the 432-square-mile county of Wapello.
Rural hospitals have experienced considerable financial pressure in recent years, alleviated somewhat by government relief funds disbursed during the pandemic. According to research from the KFF, a nonprofit group formerly known as the Kaiser Family Foundation, median operating margins at rural hospitals before the pandemic were 1.5%, versus 5.2% for nonrural facilities.
In a statement, Cara Clouse, a spokeswoman for Ottumwa Regional Health Center, said the facility is committed to the safety and well-being of its patients.
“The heinous acts of this former contractor clearly violate our policies and values, and our hearts are with all those affected by his misconduct,” she said. “Ottumwa Regional continues to cooperate with law enforcement, and we have adopted a number of reforms to further strengthen our controls and security to safeguard those we serve and prevent rogue bad actors.”
A Lifepoint spokeswoman said that the company “is deeply disturbed by the terrible acts committed by a contractor at Ottumwa Regional Health Center,” and that the company is implementing “new policies and reforms to help ensure patients and their families are protected.”
Over the past decade, private-equity firms like Apollo have spent hundreds of billions of dollars buying up health care businesses, including nursing homes, hospital staffing companies and physician practices. To finance these purchases, private-equity owners typically burden the companies they buy with debt, then slash the companies’ costs to increase earnings and appeal to potential buyers down the road.
In the business of health care, the drive for profits can run counter to the goal of helping patients, critics say.
Caraccio’s assaults on patients raise "serious questions with respect to whether these hospitals have the right resources or if they are being loaded with overwhelming amounts of debt to the point where they are forced to shift money away from patient care,” Grassley wrote in his letter. It also went to the CEO of Lifepoint Health; the chief executive of Warburg Pincus, another private-equity firm that owned Ottumwa Regional Health Center before Apollo bought it; and the CEO of Medical Properties Trust, a real estate investment company that had conducted a financial transaction involving the facility.
Apollo bought the Ottumwa facility in 2015 from Warburg Pincus, and it became part of RegionalCare Hospital Partners. A flurry of transactions followed: The next year, Apollo merged RegionalCare with Capella, another health care company, and in 2018 Apollo merged those operations with Lifepoint Health.
Then, in 2019, Medical Properties Trust bought the real estate under 10 Lifepoint hospitals, including Ottumwa Regional, leasing them back to the facilities. Private-equity firms often conduct such transactions, generating cash for themselves and their partners from the sale of real estate underlying the facilities, but often saddling the hospitals with increased costs in rents.
The sale and leaseback of the real estate in Ottumwa does not appear to have added to the facility’s rental costs, according to a person briefed on the transaction.
Nevertheless, such transactions are a concern to Grassley. “The constant selling and reselling of hospital assets by private equity, private capital, real estate investment trusts (REITs), and other related entities raises questions with respect to whether these financial maneuvers have negatively impacted the resources and thereby the care our nation’s rural hospitals provide to their patients,” he noted in his letter.
The Lifepoint spokeswoman said: “The actions of this one disturbed individual do not reflect who we are, our core values, or how we operate any hospital and in no way can be linked to Ottumwa Regional’s financial standing. Lifepoint is proud of the substantial investments we have made since becoming a part of the Ottumwa community in 2018, including the more than $31 million in facility and technology updates and for physician recruitment and retention.”
A spokesman for Grassley said the investigation by his office is ongoing. The recipients of his letter were asked to respond by Friday, March 31. The spokeswoman for the hospital declined to comment on the letter.

The O.J. Simpson Trial: A Deep Dive into America's Most Controversial Legal Case
By Maya Mehta, Seattle University Class of 2025
July 7, 2024
Tumblr media
Orenthal James Simpson’s trial, widely known as the O.J. Simpson trial, was one of the most important legal spectacles of the twentieth century. From its sensational beginning to its dramatic ending, this case attracted millions and left an enduring mark in American culture. The official name for the hearing was People v. Orenthal James Simpson; it wasn’t just another murder case but rather a social phenomenon that reflected intricacies of race, fame or celebrity and American system of justice.
The Murders and the Arrest
It happened on June 12th, 1994 at night when Nicole Brown Simpson (O.J.'s ex-wife) and her friend Ronald Goldman were found dead at Barkwood area Brentwood neighborhood in Los Angeles County. Nicole had been stabbed many times while Goldman appeared to have arrived just during or soon after Nicole’s attack since he too has multiple fatal stab wounds.
There were indications that implicated O.J. Simpson almost immediately. Blood stains with the same blood type like his were discovered at the crime scene, inside his Ford Bronco as well as in his house. Additionally, there was another bloody glove that matched one found at the murder scene in his place of residence. However, when Simpson heard about the charges, he didn’t surrender to police. Instead, he had a slowest chase by the police driving a white Ford Bronco while Simpson sat at the back seat holding a gun which was allegedly pointed towards his own head. The chase was broadcasted live and watched by millions thus setting the stage for what would later become a media circus surrounding this trial.
The Trial Begins
On July 22, 1994, Simpson was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder. The official start date for the case was January 24th, 1995 before Judge Lance Ito as its overseer. During the trial led by Marcia Clark and Christopher Darden, the prosecution’s argument rested on DNA evidence as well as insights from other witnesses who testified.
One of the main pieces of evidence presented during trial involved DNA analysis of blood samples collected from three crime scenes; OJ’s house and car being among them. This analysis is said to show conclusively that blood at these places belonged to Simpson only and thus linking him directly to both murders mentioned earlier on above. Additionally, the prosecution presented the infamous bloody glove found at Simpson’s residence, which they contended matched the one found at the crime scene.
The Defense Strategy
One of Simpson’s defense teams was called the “Dream Team” and it comprised some high profile lawyers such as Robert Shapiro, Johnnie Cochran, F. Lee Bailey and Alan Dershowitz. To get the desired result they questioned the authenticity of prosecution’s facts and suggested that Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) had been involved in a racist conspiracy against Simpson.
It was maintained by Simpson’s defense attorneys that blood evidence had been tampered with by police, LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman who discovered vital clues was said to be a racist cop planting evidence against Simpson. The credibility of this witness got badly undermined when tapes emerged with him using racial slurs and describing acts of police misconduct, which supported the defense’s claim about racial prejudice.
‘If It Doesn't Fit, You Must Acquit’
Another great moment during the trial transpired when Simpson wore these bloody gloves in court. As he tried to put them on, it was evident that they were too small for him. In his famous words to jurors Johnny Cochran observed: “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.” Consequently, these words served as a central message for their case since they implied that those gloves did not belong to O.J. thus he could not have killed anyone there.
Media Frenzy and Public Reaction
It was a media event; it was shown on television and widely reported by the newspapers. It became a cultural moment, with people across America following each and every move religiously. The trial underscored American racial tensions, as many African Americans felt Simpson had been victimized by a racist criminal justice system while many whites believed him to be guilty.
Media coverage also raised issues of the influence of celebrity on the justice system. As an iconic football star and actor, Simpson enjoyed immense popularity among fans and this affected public opinion and the trial itself.
The Verdict
On the 3rd of October, 1995, following fewer than four hours’ debate by the jury, he was found not guilty on two counts of murder. The outcome was stunning for others; it was a reason to be joyous for some and a source of scandal or anger for others. For example, African Americans rejoiced over what they saw as a victory against their alleged discrimination in this case. Consequently, whites and parents of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were left in tears after the courtroom’s decision was passed.
The Aftermath
The aftermath of the trial was marred by several civil lawsuits against Simpson. A civil jury found Simpson guilty of having caused the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, and subsequently awarded their families $33.5 million in compensation in 1997. Unlike the criminal case, this civil trial did not have to be proven beyond reasonable doubt, only by a preponderance of evidence.
Further legal problems dogged Simpson’s life after the trial. In 2007, he was apprehended for participating in a Las Vegas hotel robbery and later found guilty on multiple felony charges including kidnapping and armed robbery. The sentence handed down to him was 33 years imprisonment before his parole release in 2017.
Legacy and Impact
The O.J. Simpson trial is a pivoting event in American legal and cultural history with much significance. This trial exposed the deep racial fault lines within America and how complex the justice system could be. It also had a lasting impact on media coverage of high-profile cases.
It provoked wide-ranging discussions on race, fame, and the legal process. Additionally, it led to changes in DNA evidence handling as well as police procedures. The influence of the trial can be seen through various books, documentaries, and dramatizations like FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” which won great acclaim.
Furthermore, the trial brought about drastic alterations to the legal landscape too. Consequently DNA became more prevalent in criminal cases while this led to stringent measures in handling such evidence. Also worth noting was the significance of jury selection where they chose African Americans as part of their defense strategy hence leading them to win.
In addition, the trial was life-altering for those involved. The prosecution team led by Marcia Clark and Christopher Darden faced intense scrutiny and personal attacks. In particular, Clark became extremely controversial; she received much criticism because of her looks or even personal life that had no bearing on case issues. On the other hand, Cochran became a hero to many African Americans who thought he had defended an unfairly treated black man against a prejudiced legal system.
More than anything else, nevertheless, this trial also highlighted the private tragedies behind the screaming headlines. Despite being overshadowed by all the melodrama in court Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman did not cease to be mourned as their families sought justice for them. Thus, it is not surprising that the Goldman family emerged as one of the leading advocates of victims’ rights and they played a key role in dragging Simpson into civil court where he was ordered to pay millions of dollars as compensation for wrongful death charges.
O.J.’s post-trial years were tainted with further legal and personal problems. His fall from grace came only few days after his 2007 arrest and subsequent conviction for armed robbery. Although Simpson’s imprisonment followed by his parole release in 2017 brought him back into public attention once again but in another way than during his trial in the 1990s.
Media coverage of high profile legal cases has never been the same since O.J. Simpson trial. The extensive coverage of the trial led to an unprecedented demand for live broadcasts of court proceedings which translated to public interest in other significant lawsuits. Nevertheless, it raised ethical questions about media’s play within justice and its ability to manipulate minds before a judgment on any case.
Conclusion
To sum up, the O.J. Simpson trial was a cultural phenomenon that went beyond just being a legal process and exposed several critical issues in American society. It is still being felt even now highlighting how complex justice can be whereas no one can underestimate how powerful social media is in influencing public opinion. This trial also showed how deeply divided America is on racial grounds, as well as how influential celebrities are in judicial systems and why evidence must be fairly and impartially handled when presented before the courts of law. Consequently, it will always remain a turning point in US history with implications that are still relevant today.

Michael Nigg (April 28, 1969 – September 8, 1995)[1] was an aspiring actor who worked as a waiter at a Beverly Hills restaurant. He was shot and killed during an apparent robbery attempt in Hollywood.[2] The Los Angeles Police Department later arrested three suspects but soon released them for lack of evidence. No other suspects have ever been identified, and the killing remains unsolved.[3]
The case attracted some media coverage at the time, because Nigg had formerly worked at the Mezzaluna restaurant in Brentwood, where he had befriended Ronald Goldman. Almost 15 months earlier, Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson had been found slain at her home near the restaurant, after he had gone there to return her mother's eyeglasses, which had been left behind at Mezzaluna. Simpson's ex-husband, former football star O. J. Simpson, had been charged with the murders, and his highly publicized trial had reached closing arguments.
Simpson, who has consistently professed his innocence in the Brown and Goldman killings, was acquitted of the murder charges almost a month after Nigg's death.[a] Alternative theories of the murders, supposedly shared by Simpson, have suggested they were related to drug trafficking in the Los Angeles area,[4] and that Nigg's was as well; Nigg apparently lived very well for a waiter,[5] and there were some allegations he, too, had been involved in the drug trade while working at the Mezzaluna branch in Colorado before.[6] Nigg and Goldman, it has also been noted, were not the only waiters at Mezzaluna to be the victims of criminal activity during the mid-1990s.[6]

Betty White, the trailblazing television star whose more than eight-decade career saw her go from unforgettable roles on “The Golden Girls” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” to becoming a cultural icon in her 80s and 90s, has died less than three weeks before her 100th birthday.
Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Mike Lopez told The Post that officers responded to a radio call Friday at about 9:30 a.m. concerning “a natural death investigation” at the 99-year-old’s home in Brentwood, Calif.
Her agent and close friend Jeff Witjas later confirmed the news to People magazine.
“Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement.

This is very big for the city of Minneapolis: The tRUMP sucking head of the Minneapolis police union Bob Kroll, who perverted the very definition of what a union even represents, has agreed to retire under intense pressure...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These rally photos in which Kroll can be seen sucking the big orange tRUMP, happened long after the infamous tRUMP speech to law enforcement officers at Suffolk Community College, July 28, 2017, in Brentwood, New York. This was the speech in which our corrupt illegitimate presidunce encouraged police to be more violent in handling potential offenders:
He described the precautions typically taken by police where they place a hand over a suspect's head while they're being put into a police car to protect them.
"When you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just seen them thrown in, rough. I said, ‘Please don’t be too nice,’" he said.
"When you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head you know, the way you put their hand over [their head]," Trump continued, mimicking the motion. "Like, 'Don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody, don’t hit their head.' I said, 'You can take the hand away, OK?'
The comments were met with snickering by many police in attendance. Our illegitimate presidunce is of course so stupid he doesn’t understand that suspects at this point have not yet even been charged, and even if and when they are charged it is not the duty of the police to be the judge and jury and dole out punishment.
The Suffolk County Police Department, the county in which Trump spoke, afterwards tweeted about its policy on handling prisoners:
"The SCPD has strict rules & procedures relating to the handling of prisoners," it tweeted following the president's speech. "Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously."
A subsequent tweet read, "As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners."
It seems more than likely having a tRUMP kissing buffoon like Kroll heading the police union in Minneapolis was a contributing factor not only in the murder of George Floyd, but in the mistreatment of others as well.
With this kind attitude coming from leaders it’s inevitable that at least some police officers will mistreat suspects knowing that the police union would have their back no matter what. When the Mayor of Minneapolis told officers they could not appear in uniform at political events Kroll was involved in having T-shirts made supporting the corrupt illegitimate orange presidunce, and distributing them to police to wear at the tRUMP rally in Minneapolis in 2019.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Kroll skirmished over several other issues as well, upon learning that Kroll would be leaving: “Good riddance,” Frey tweeted Monday.
